Elizabeth Relyea died 4 August 1847 in Esopus

Searching the Ulster Co. Archives online, I found that an Elizabeth Relyea died in Esopus at age 84 on Aug. 4, 1847.

The ICN is 89-04511

This could be Elizabeth Wiesmiller, who married Hendrik Relyea in about 1781.
(yes, I'm still chasing Hendrik & Elizabeth to determine if their daughter Elizabeth-baptised at Klyne Esopus in 1796- is my g-g-g grandmother, & wife of David Polhemus!)

Does anyone have access to the County records, or records in Esopus to check this out?

Thanks!

Edie

which is the right Elizabeth Relyea in Ulster County ca 1800

Elizabeth Relyea married David Polhemus. Both were born in Ulster County (He was born in New Paltz. She was born in New Paltz or Esopus.)
Children ( per 1830 census in Esopus):
1 male, born 1825-1830
(Abram/Abraham Polhamus born Aug. 5, 1823 in Esopus)
1 male, born 1820-1825
2 males, born 1815-1820
1 female, born 1810-1815
(Sarah E. Polhamus, born 1814 in Esopus & died Jan 14, 1901 in Esopus (never married))

Have spent years trying to determine Elizabeth’s parentage.
At least five Relyea families in New Paltz/Esopus produced a daughter named Elizabeth:
1.Simon Relyea, Magdelena Deyo – baptized in New Paltz 2 Nov 1786
?Married John Saxton -07 NOV 1802
2.Dennis Relyea, Annatje Anna Van Vliet - b 21 June 1789 d 19 July 1789
3.Dennis Relyea, Annatje Anna Van Vliet - b 21 Jan 1793 d 26 Feb 1852
4.Simon Relyea, Maria Divine - 20 Jan 1796 - New Paltz
5.Henry Relyea, Elizabeth Weismiller – baptized 23 June 1796 Klyne Esop.
Does anyone have info on any of these? I’m interested in confirming marriages & dates of death, in an effort to eliminate any who died before 1814, or married others.

I suspect that my Elizabeth was daughter of Hendrick Relyea & Elizabeth Weismiller, baptized at Klyne Esopus in 1796, since the 1820 census entry for David Polhemus is only separated by one household from the listing for Hendrick. Later generations of Hendrick’s family transferred land to & from Elizabeth’s son.

Thank you for any help!
Edie

One of the first mentions of a Relyea in what is now the U.S. is Dene Relje (a Dutch spelling). Dene was a sponsor at the 1693 baptism of a child of Hugo Freer and mary LeRoy, some of the first settlers in New Paltz, NY. These folks were Huguenots, and Dene may have been a French Huguenot, but his parentage remains unkown.

David,
I believe I have found your Relyea GEDCOM database since mine is the same ancestral line.
David's parents were Thomas Relyea 9-10-1800 died 6-27-1895, married to Sally Hooghtaling (born 1799 in Guilderland, AC, NY) on 2-17-1821 in Guilderland, NY. Perhaps by now you already have this info since your original posting was 6 years ago! If not, find this database on Rootsweb.com: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

This tree goes back to at least 1580 France.
Good luck
Jeanne
Edith Caldwell is my cousin. My mother was a Relyea. My GGrandfather and Edith's father were brothers. I went to school with James, Raymond and Theodora. We were all born and raised in a little town in upstate NY called Canastota. It's on the NYS Thruway between Syracuse and Utica. Why don't you email me your email address. I have quite a bit of information on the Caldwells and Relyeas if you want it. Also have quite a few clippings. Have pictures of the gravestones of Alferda, James and Edith (they are all buried in the Lenox Rural Cemetery in Canastota. If you email me, put Caldwell in the subject line of your message. Look forward to hearing from you. Gordon

The baby on the right in this picture, Alvin Relyea, is my grandfather who died in August 1979 at his home (family) farm in the Town of Springfield near Taylor Wisconsin. He is pictured with his older siblings, all the children of George M. Relyea and Alice Lambert Relyea. Note: The other baby, Charlotte McNab Kling is being held on the lap of her mother Mrs. Jane Relyea McNab, who is hiding under a shawl for the photo. These are the grandchildren of Adam Lemuel Relyea and Jane Ann Jeannette Vincent. The Relyea and Vincent families were early pioneer settlers of the Wisconsin Territory. They immigrated from upstate New York in the mid 1800's.
We have the original of this picture in our family archives - it was included in a book that my grandmother, Rosemary Roberts Relyea put together before she died. I am curious as to how you came to possess the postcard photo? Thank you for your time and interest.

Paul,
Have you seen the Simon Leroy database. That's where you'll find Annatje! I am related to her as well. If you have any difficulty, just let me know.
Jeanne

Any Relays who were originally Relyeas?

My grandfather was Halloran Brown Relay, great grandfather was Frank Spates Relay. The family is from New York, and I was told as a child that the name was originally Relyea and was a French name. Any connections out there?
