You're asking a question that professional genealogists have been unable to answer so far. Christian Remick appeared in Kittery, ME records in 1651 when he received a Land Grant there. It has never been determined where he came from or when he came to Maine, and the liklihood that he was an immigrant has been assumed but not proven. My own theory is that he came from England since he apparently assimilated quickly into local affairs in his early 20's, suggesting that he spoke English. He was born about 1631, based on a 1698-99 deposition which claimed he was about 67 years old. Last mention of him alive was in May 1718, at which time he would have been about 77.

As for Hannah, her situation is similar. No record has been found of her marriage to Christian and her maiden name has been the subject of speculation and nothing more. Tompson and Foster are the surnames most often suggested. Her date and place of birth are unknown.

BTW, my email address is now remick@cox.net

I'm trying to fill in the descendant lines of Remick families that came to America in the 1800's and settled in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio. Many of these immigrants came from Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, and Russia.
In my REMICK database I try to include information on all Remick families in the US, regardless of origin. I already have a great deal of data on these families, which I will gladly share with family members, but am always looking to contact Remick's from these lines to refine my data and update the files. I look forward to hearing from anyone with questions and/or comments about their Remick line or connection.

I have some information on this family in my files, but there is some confusion as to who fits where in several Remick/Remich/Ramich families in Green Bay and Menasha, Wisconsin. I have John Ramich born in January 1830, probably in Luxembourg. His wife was Johanna _____, born March 1836 in Holland. I also show a Mathias Remick(h) of Green Bay, born Feb 27, 1832 in Luxembourg and married to Johanna M. Tillman who was born June 21, 1837 in Holland. John and Johanna had nine children-- Kate, Elizabeth, John, Anna, Mary, Ellen, Alice, and Rosa.
Mathias and Johanna Remich had seven children-- Antone, Charles, Josephine, Mary, Margaret, John, and Henry.
What I have on these two families could be a useful strawman for a more serious study in local records. You can email me at remick@cox.net and I can go into more details on your specific interests.
I'm looking for info on John J. Allo (abt 1862) and family. Supposedly, his mother was French Canadian and father from England. Most all the data that I've found places the family primarily in the Escanaba, Delta Co., MI, area. His wife Mary Remich adopted two girls (Natalie (abt 1896) and Marie (abt 1893). Apparently, they gave a son up for adoption to Mary's sister Elizabeth. His name was Harold Jasper Gilbert (abt 1907). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dorinda CHENEY wife of Andrew REMICK of Kittery, Me and Groton, Grafton,NH

Andrew Remick was born in 1805 Kittery, York, Maine and was a ships carpenter in the early census'. He first married Charlotte MANSON in 21 March 1833, Kittery, Me. But after her death in 1843, he remarried Dorinda CHENEY. I am trying to find out who Dorinda CHENEY's parents were. Dorinda was 44 yrs old in the 1850 census in Groton, Grafton, NH and it lists her birth state as NH. So she was born about 1806. Well, I found a Dorinda CHENEY that was the daughter of a David CHENEY and Lovisa BALL who was born in 21 Mar 1806. Can anyone tell me if this is the same Dorinda CHENEY that married my GGGgrandfather, Andrew REMICK, sometime after 1843? Please email me at <gail_veve@yahoo.com> Thanks. Gail (REMICK) Veve

Wow this is very exciting. I will see if I can find this. My father gave me a home made book about 10 yrs ago that my niece had made up from microfilms and a book written she had found by a Remick back in the 1800's and has gone through a few moves and is somewhere I haven't figured out yet. It was birth, death and marriage records and not much else. I live in Alberta Canada and the only Remicks here are in my house. So anything I can find is really exciting for me. Thank you for this lead!

Bruce,

Thanks for all the information. My great grandmother Caroline (Carie) Remick Bell's death certificate indicates that her father's name is William Remick and her mother as Amelia Scherer of Marion, VA. I have been able to follow her through 1900, and lose her until 1930 when she was in Phoenix. She had two children Amelia Bell Lohrentz and Earl Bell. I never knew that Earl existed until the 1930 census. Amelia had two children,, my mother June Louise and Walter Scherer Lohrentz. Her youngest died when he was 5 years old. My grandmother Amelia died in 1935 in Phoenix, AZ. My grandfather Walter R. Lohrentz from my research was born in Stettin, Germany in 1872 and died in 1936 in Wilcox, AZ.

Thanks again for your info. Let me know if you find anything else.

Karen

I have that 1870 Census record. Eulalie was Amelia's daughter by a prior marriage to Charles Green. In the 1880 Census, children John Wallace and Carrie Lou Remick were living in Weimar, TX with their mother and her third husband, Charles Miller.

I suspect that this William Remick was a son of Jacob Gilman Remick, who moved his family to Galveston, TX in the 1840's, and that he married 1st Julia H. Harmon about 1852, possibly in Goliad, TX. They had four children between 1853 and 1859 and then William disappeared from the household. Julia appears in Goliad in the 1860 Census as head of household with three children. Is is possible that William then married Amelia Green (abt 1860), and the DOB of their children in the 1870 Census would fit that scenario. I can't document this, but it all fits timewise.

William Remick was born in Maine about 1824. The places of birth listed for him and for the children of his first marriage are inconsistant in Census records, so I am not too troubled by the MO birthplace in the 1870 Census. He also is found listed as born in MS, TX, and ME, depending on who provided the information.

The following accounts for William Remick are found in Civil War records: Remick, William, private. Co C, 1st TX Cav Regt, Buchel's 1st TX Mounted Rifles (formerly Yager's 3rd Bn Cav), born St. Louis, MO. Occupation: carpenter. Admitted to hospital at Columbus, TX on March 4, 1864 "on account of Syphillis Secondary." Paroled June 26, 1865, Columbus. The surname Remick appears in the index (Remick/Colorado County) of Confederate Indigent Families Lists of Texas 1863-1865.

William Remick, age 26, b. ME, appears alone in Cameron Co, TX in the 1850 Census. He is listed as a carpenter. I haven't been able to locate this William Remick in the 1860 Census, nor in the 1880 Census. He probably died before 1900.

An interesting family to research.

The only information I have about him that I have been able to find is from the 1870 census when he was residing in Harisburg, TX. He was 46, his wife's name was Amelia and they had 3 children Eulalie (9), John (4), and Caroline (Carie on the census who was 1). The youngest was my great grandmother. The children were all born in Texas. My great grandmother was born in Columbus, TX in 1869. According to the cesnss he was a carpenter.

I don't know when he married Amelia or where in Missouri he was born.

I would appreciate any other information you may have.

Karen

That's where I got mine.

I still haven't been able to locate Augustus' daughter Eleanor Prior Remick in the census after she married Alonzo Howard (1893) and William Combs (in 1902?).

William Remick and Amelia (Scherer) Green were married on 7 Sep 1864 in Columbus, TX by pastor J. J. Scherer. Pastor Scherer was probably either her father, Jacob Scherer, a minister, or her older brother, John Jacob Scherer.

I presume you are aware of the contributions of the Scherer's in Wyth Co, VA.

As you have no doubt seen, the 1900 Census shows Carrie Bell as born in July 1868. I would defer to what her death certificate shows and make note of the other date to keep the records complete.

The following is a note about one of Amelia Sherer's brothers:

SCHERER, JOHN JACOB (1830-1919). John Jacob Scherer, teacher, was born near Rural Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Spoon) Scherer, on February 7, 1830. After some education in a country school, he attended Virginia Collegiate Institute and Pennsylvania College, where he graduated in 1852. He accepted a teaching position in the private school of a Judge Munger in San Felipe, Texas, but soon was teaching school in Columbus. With his father and his brother, Gideon Scherer, Jacob organized Colorado College in Columbus under the auspices of the Lutheran Church in 1857. All three of them taught in the college. On October 19, 1863, John Jacob Scherer enlisted in the Confederate Army for a six-month period. He returned to Virginia in 1867 and there was married to Elizabeth Katherine Killinger. They moved to Texas, where Scherer served as president of Colorado College until 1873, when he left Texas to go back to Virginia; there he founded Marion College. He served as its president until 1910 and remained as president emeritus until his death in 1919.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: Goodridge Wilson, A Brief History of Marion College (Marion, Virginia, 1948).

Good luck with locating one of the reprints. The 1933 Holman book actually built on research contained in a smaller book on the Remick Family produced by Lt. Oliver Philbrick Remick in 1893. A sum of money later was made available for additional research, and Winifred Holman took up the task (until the bequest ran out) which led to her book, REMICK GENEALOGY. For some time after Lt. Remick's death, his research notes were kept in a collection at the Maine Historical Society in Portland. I spent a week there over thirty years ago transcribing everything in the collection for my Remick files. His notes covered a couple additional generations of Remick's forward from where the Holman book left off in the mid-1800's.

I'd be interested in any updates you could provide on your Remick line in Canada and before.

I am researching the Gowells and as you know the Remick daughter, Hannah, married Richard Gowell in Gowell Chapel in Kittery on March 04,1883/84. I have a date of death for both but no place of burial. Do you know where this might be located? I have some ideas but until I get to Maine I will not be able to verify this info. Also, do you know where any of their children might be buried? Do you know anything about the old Gowell Chapel?

Warren Remick & Hi, Bruce H Remick

Thanks Bruce for the info on Warren Remick, son of Alfred Adrian Remick (1874-1929). I looked up Alfred on the 1880 census and found him in Groton, Grafton, NH - living with his parents Wardsworth Remick & Ursula P (Wheeler) Remick. According to our telephone conversation a few weeks ago, Wardsworth Remick was the youngest son of Andrew Remick (1805-1878) from Kittery, Me and residing in the Groton, NH area. Wardsworth was Augustus Remick's brother. Since I am desended through Augustus' line-; and Warren the son of Alfred A Remick- - Warren Remick would have been ( my father) Karl Fred Remick's first cousin. If you look at it that way I am a distant cousin. My aunts & uncles in the Bristol, NH area told me that IT WAS Warren who owned the REMICKS Dairy. I remember those old glass milk bottles very well--drank alot a milk from that dairy as a child. Wish I had one of those milk bottles today. Fond Memories for me. If I'm off base in my info/thinking please let me know. You can either leave a message here or e-mail me at ; steve1966@coastalnow.net. Thanks again for the help!
Bruce,
I'm doing some beginning level genealogy for a friend.

Do you have any information on the parents and/or siblings of an Anna Elizabeth REMICK, b. 9 Jan 1883 in Shieldsville, Rice Co., MN? She married Charles Albert WILLE 20 May 1903 in Shieldsville, and she died 14 March 1972 in Farmington, Dakota Co., MN.

(NOTE: LDS IGI has her birth as 1 July 1890 in Dakota Co., MN and death April 1978; however, it also incorrectly lists Charles' DOB as 1886 and their marriage as 1911 in Dakota Co., MN. Since they had four children by 1911, this is unlikely.)

She's buried with Charles in the Corinthian Cemetery in Hampton, Dakota, MN.

Their children were:
Joseph Julius Wille (1904-1974)
Julius Fred Wille (1905-1995)
Henry George Wille (1907-1981)
Pearl Hazel Wille (1910-1911)
Hazel Bernice Wille (1912-1999)

I do have her on the SSDI, so my friend could order the SS app and get the parents' names. But I don't know how much she'll want to invest in this, and now that it costs $27 a pop... Well, right now it's just a new curiosity to my friend, so I'm doing what I can just from online research for the moment. I didn't locate her with her family in the 1900 census yet.
