I have this book and I dearly love it. My much older cousin from Phoenix sent it to me when I was 2 and my grandmother read it to us constantly when we would spend the night with her. I have seen it on ebay before and it went for like $94.00. This book is one of my favorites.

Re: Deegie and The Fairy Princess by Ruth W. Rempel.

Wow. It's nice to find others who know this book! I came across my copy this morning, and decided to try to find more info. about it on the internet. I was curious when it was written, as it has no copyright date. I am thrilled to find so much info. I am afraid mine is not in very good condition. It has been taped up the spine and right edge of the front cover. Also, as a child, I wrote my name on the cover in blue ink, just below Ruth Rempel's name, and scribbled red crayon all over the page with the "cruel wind". (It was kind of scary to me at the time, and I was mad it took all of Deegie's friends away & ruined his Castle home. ) And for some reason, I doodled with purple crayon on the inside front cover. I just wish someone had kept me from drawing all over this book. I am glad I did not tear any of the pages, though. I never realized how special it really was. :) Thanks for all the information.

Name is spelled Diedrich, Dietrick, Dirk, Duerk and a variety of other ways. Your great-grandfather Dietrich was b 30 Dec 1895 (17 Dec 1895 in Julian calendar) Crimea d 14 Mar 1972 Vancouver. His wife was not a Katharina, but Margaret Fast b 25 Apr 1903 d 30 Jun 1974 New Westminster, BC. They immigrated 21 Nov 1926 Quebec, Quebec with sons Gerhard and Ewald (Edward and Clarence apparently born in BC). Dietrich can be found in GRANDMA database as #170610, as can 6 generations of his Rempel ancestry. see Mennonitsche Rundschau obituaries: 19 Apr 1972, p11 for Dietrich, 28 Aug 1974, p11 for wife Margaret. Mennonite Archives in Abbotsford will have those Rundschaus, and also the Mennonite Brethren Herald 21 Apr 1972, p31 obit on Dietrich. Your Rempels had moved from Prussia to Russia in 1837, as Mennonites. Incidentally, Dietrich's mother was a Katharina nee Matthies who died in BC 9 Feb 1946, and that is where confusion on name of wife to Dietrich liekly arises. Katharina's obituary Mennonitische Rundschau 30 Mar 1946, p7. Her husband was also a Dietrich, b 22 Apr 1861 d 6 Nov 1951 Sumas, BC. We always wondered about Deegie, where his parents were, and who cooked his meals, etc. I never realized how many people remember this book. I really don't need it anymore, let me know if you would want it. Ellen

The Rempel family you're probably talking about were Mennonite pilgrims who moved from Germany to a settlement called Chortitza in what is now southern Russia. Here's a site that talks about the history (http://www.gameo.org/encyclopedia/contents/C4652.html) and here's a site with many helpful genealogical records (http://www.mennonitegenealogy.com/russia/). My Rempel ancestors were part of a large-scale mennonite immigration to Canada.

I am curious about my heritage, and was wondering if anyone knew anything about Dietrich (I don’t know if that is the proper spelling, but I have heard it pronounced dee-trick) and his wife Katharina Rempel. I know they had a whole bunch of children and the child I am descended from is Dietrich junior. And then down the line somewhere (I‘m not sure how far), there is my deceased grandfather Clarence Rempel and his brothers Edward and Ewald Rempel (they started Rempel Bros Concrete).

I’m not sure, but I think they were Germans living in Russia, or something like that.

Does anyone know what Rempel means? Is it a German or Russian word?

So if anyone knows any interesting information about them, I would love to hear it… For instance, where they are really from, places they immigrated to… Anything.

Re: Dick (Dietrich) Rempel

Yes I am related on his mother's side. His mother Tina and my dad Paul (Neufeld) were brother and sister. I haven't actually seen Bobby or Robert since he was about 10 yrs old I think. Once in awhile I hear from Aunt Tina, but usually get bits and pieces passed on through the family grapevine via Aunt Hilda. Dad passsed away in 2005, and in going througha couple of old picture albums, I found a few of Danny and Bobby, also Carol and Ruth when they were quite young, and wondered if they wanted me to email them a copy of some of the photos. The photos are old and small, not necessarily in good condition, - mostly not in good condition, but interesting anyway.I have been trying to place Uncle Dick's family, just for curiosity, and because I find it so fascinating how various lines connect and reconnect through the years. Not that I have great hopes and expectations, and I am very new to genealogy, but I love history and learning how family and families have been part of or affected by the events in history gets me all excited.
We are in the middle of renovating so all my "stuff" is here , there, and everywhere and I can't put my hands on the piece of paper that I had scribbled the suspected ancestry for Uncle Dick. But I know it caught my attention because if I was correct, then Uncle Dick and my husband would share a great great great grandfather....or something like that. (My husband was adopted and was "found" by his birth mother a few years ago. She was a Fehr).

Not that I have more for you- but going through my information, it sounds like your grandfather is my uncle - and you would be the daughter of my cousin Robert (well, I always knew him as Bobby, but that was many many moons ago)

I am the granddaughter of Mary Dirks Janzen, who wrote My Memories (1970), as well as two other short books. These were typed on a typewriter and only a limited number were photocopied. I have aspirations to retype these in electronic form, then share them as PDFs. Meanwhile, a copy of My Memories is in the collection of the Bethel College Mennonite Library and Archives.

FYI, I think perhaps your subject refers to Gnadenfeld, Ukraine, Russia.

Re: search for favorite childhood book possibly by Deidrik Rempel

You would be looking for Dietrich G. Rempel. He was a rubber toy manufacturer and sculptor in the 1940's and on. Dietrich also illustrated with someone else the booklet you were referring to called Rempel's "DEEGIE" and The Fairy Princess. It was copyrighted in 1949 by Rempel Manufacturing Inc. The story was written by his wife Ruth Rempel and dedicated to Dietrich whose childhood provided the factual backgroud of this fantasy story. Many of Dietrich rubber toys can still be found on ebay (now collectors items). I have several of them along with the booklet. We are related to Dietrich. Hope this helps you.

Hello. I am almost sure I have the book to which you refer. More specifically, I have a color copy of the book, having given the original to my childhood friend, Teresa, who lost all her childhood memories in a fire. It is called "Deegie and the Fairy Princess," by Ruth W. Rempel. It is beautifully illustrated and was alwasy one of my favorites, too.

I wonder if you refer to Bluffton, Indiana. My mother was from there.

I am Mennonite by origin, grew up in Russia and am looking for my roots. My family lived in the Orenburg region, village Klubnikovo, Kubanka and Dolinovka (also known as village Nr. 9) from about 1897 till 1988, when we moved to Germany.

Father and Grand father are Wilhelm Rempel; Great G. Father was Jakob, b.10-02-1887

My mother's maiden name is Harms, her mother's maiden name was Thun (Tun),
Does anybody know anything more about this? Can you give me a hint where else I might look?
Also, if you know of resources in German that would be much appreciated, since my parents, Wilhelm and Helene Rempel are very much interested in all of this too, but they don't speak English.

Thanks a lot in advance!
Katharina

Have you checked out the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society website? It seems it may be a good place to start as they have records from Prussia, Russia, Canada, etc. Also, the Alberta Mennonite History site has a lot of information, may be your best bet. Good luck.
