The Renfro DNA Project

I'm pleased to announce that The Renfro DNA Project is now officially up and running. The project is being hosted by Family Tree DNA.

You can visit the project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Renfro/ to take a look around or to join up. The project just launched today, so we need some participants to submit their DNA for testing.

As a surname project, we are concerned with Y-DNA which is passed from father to son each generation. For that reason, any submitted DNA will have to be from a male Renfro (or any variant spelling of the last name). For female researchers, it will be necessary to have a male relative that fits the criteria to submit their DNA.

Please visit our project page where you can learn more about DNA testing and how it relates to genealogical research. Also, any help in spreading the word would be greatly appreciated!

Randall Baker
Administrator
The Renfro DNA Project

Alexander Renfrew, Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia, Canada

I am looking for information on Alexander Renfrew of Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia, Canada. The information that I have is that he was born in 1770 and died March 28, 1847. He is buried in Hackett's Cove, Nova Scotia. He married Elizabeth Umlah (1765-1845). Their daughter, Isabella Renfrew, married John Marvin and they lived in Glen Margaret as well. I can find no records in Nova Scotia for Alexander Renfrew prior to this time. I am interested in knowing where he came from and how he came to settle in Nova Scotia.

Someone suggested I try Renfrew instead:

Augustus Timothy (Renfroe) Renfrew was born in Scotland and immigrated to the USA sometime before 1880's. He had 2 sons,
Clarence and Albert Clark, both born in Amarillo, Texas in 1880's (guessing).

I am looking for any information on his origin in Scotland and any other family members.

Would sks please do a 1851 Census lookup for me.
Robert Adam was married 12 June 1863 in Johnstone. He is listed as a Private in the Renfrew Militia. His parents are given as Thomas Addam, coal pit labourer, and Elizabeth Gibson.
On his death in 1908 his parents are shown as David Adam, farmer, and Maggie Gibson.
I'm sure it is the same person and the marraige is to Mary Morning and the death certificate gives the same name as his (deceased) wife.
It would help if I could track down 9 year old Robert in the 1851 Census to confirm who his parents are.
Alan
