I hadn't been able to find anything else. I really haven't been doing much with my research in the last couple years. My grandparents are getting older and sicker so I've been focusing on writing down the stories they tell me while I still have them around.

My mtDNA is T2b5 - I know of only 2 others with this Haplogoup, and we're not related that I know of. It's hard to search for common ancestors with mtDNA, because the SURNAME changes, not just with each generation, but with every woman in the all-female descendancy who marries. Your RENTFROW ancestress is probably the only one with your mtDNA and the surname RENTFROW...

Jim Bartlett

Re: Baron James Renfrew

I have been curious about the same things.. my mother is a Renfrew and has said to have traced her Renfrew family back to a William Renfrew b: 1677/1678?? but agreed.. dead end there.. on the note of the Baron of Renfrew however, I'd be personally more cautious to make assumptions.

The Baron of Renfrew is currently the His Royal Highness Prince Charles of England.

The "Baron of Renfrew" is a title.. it is not implicative that Renfrew was a surname of this James. It was not James' surname -James' surname was Stewart. From readings online -which you can garner from Encyclopedias available- of James Stewart and his son James Stewart, whos family were granted the lands of Renfrewshire, there's no actual blood relation between James STWEART and any family named the Renfrews.
When James was six months old he was exiled to France to live with relatives and his mother. He was of relation to King Henry XIV of France at the time, who sheltered him there.
When James' father died, he proclaimed himself king, which was an act unsupported by England, which was vouching for a protestant ruler... James was Catholic. He was replaced by a germanic dynasty which led to his creation of the Jacobite movement to re-claim the thrones of England, Scottland and Ireland.
His son Charles led another Jacobite movement later.

There was also a story that at some point, when James was tyring to retake the thrones, since he'd been exiled but needed to return to Scottland to fight his battle for the thrones, he had to take on a different name so that others would not suspect him. the name he took upon himself was the Baron of Renfrew.

Ultimately, James Stewart, the "old pretender", the "Baron of Renfrew" and his family never possessed Renfrew as a surname.

Either way, I would be extremely cautious in making the accusation of relation to any name of notability for the fact that Scottland's Court of Lyons keeps their royal /Cheiftain bloodlines more heavily guarded than any other nation in the world. It is not lightly that they make links to nobility.
Celtic peoples were some of the best known geneaologists in the world -their records were magnificently kept as far as storing names for notable family trees. That, after all, was a noblemans livelihood... if he couldn't proove his blood relation, he was a nobody; thus, bloodline is a heavily guarded thing!!!
Even today in Scottland, it is even against federal Scottish law to bear any coat of arms if you are not THE direct single recorded descendant of a House. And there is only ONE direct descendant that has rights to it, which is usually a male. Most of those direct descendants are todays recognized Clan Chieftains.

Personally, I think it's a huuuuge allegation to suggest that one is a descendant of a House like the House of Stewart/ the "Baron of Renfrew" and would suggest records from the Court of Lyons in Scottland on the family of Stewarts from that time if you're really curious. But from what i've read, if anyone's wanting to proove descendance from a major Clan head it's a years long legal battle so-to-speak, to make sure it's Proven.

He also had a son Henry and a daughter, Elizabeth

I have been curious about the same things.. my mother is a Renfrew and has said to have traced her Renfrew family back to a William Renfrew b: 1677/1678?? but agreed.. dead end there.. on the note of the Baron of Renfrew however, I'd be personally cautious to make assumptions.

James had another son Henry and a daughter Elizabeth.

Re: RENFRO-DNA and Descendants of John Bartlett (1760-1822) of NC

As you read through my previous post you'll note the very important role that DNA has played in sorting out this family, and tying it back to the Mayflower BARTLETTs in Plymouth, MA.

I highly encourage RENFRO researchers and genealogists to participate in the RENFRO-DNA Project. There are many RENFROs in Southern VA and Northern NC and getting DNA from male descenants will really help us sort them out (there are at least 3 very distinct BARTLETT lines from Southern VA, and DNA shows they don't relate for over 1,000 years - so we are now looking for records to link the matching DNA lines and don't need to look for records to link the different lines - it's really focused our research efforts).

You can have the same success with the RENFRO-DNA Project; all it needs is participants from the various lines. It is best to get at least 2 participants (widely separated cousins with a paper trail to a common RENFRO) from each line - when their DNA results match, you've validated, or proven, the paper trail back to the common ancestor. Different DNA results initially would indicate different RENFRO lines. If you're lucky and get minor changes in the DNA results, it will help sort out how the lines are connected and which research to focus on.

Although DNA is only a tool (it doesn't tell you your pedigree), it is extremely accurate, and therefor a very powerful tool. You can't say that about records, which are often inaccurate. But in the end you need both.

I encourage male RENFROs to participate in the RENFRO-DNA Project (female researchers: get your brothes, uncles, dad, cousins involved - give them a DNA kit as a very interesting/fun giftj; take a DNA kit to your next reunion) and move RENFRO research and genealogy to a new level.

Jim Bartlett
Admin Bartlett-DNA Project

Shannon;

Here is the info I have on John & Agnes BARTLETT of Buncombe Co, NC - my focus is on the census records, but I've had help on this line from researching descendants:

[F1B3A4]. These two families are closely related to the Buncombe Co, NC BARTLETTs, but we haven't found the link yet.

Many researchers believe the link is with the RENFROs - do you know anything about the RENFRO line?

Thanks again for posting; I hope to hear more from you.

Jim Bartlett

I just submitted a post about Myrtle Austin Renfro in response to a query about a photo. I forgot to add that her husband, Samuel C. Renfro was the child of George W. Renfro and Kate Pittman. Goerge W. must have been a Jr, since his dad was George W. Renfro and his mother was Elizabeth Burrough. Myrtle Austin Renfro was the child of Robert and Lula Austin.

Thanks for the advice, Jim..I won't be able to get to a center for a little while, but will write down that number..I am not sure of the birthplace or actual date of Elizabeth..the only thing that might give a little credibility to her birthplace or at least where she was at that time is this bit of info I got about her husband, Jacob Walker..a note from my FTM file.."His parents moved to Botetourt Co, VA in 1798 where they were known as the "Dutch Walkers."

Other than that no solid evidence. Thanks again!

It would be so wonderful to finally find someone to connect her with. I've been search well over 10 years.

Carol;

If you are sure Elizabeth RENFRO was born in Botetourt Co, VA in the 1780s, you should look at the Personal Property Tax Lists - taken every year from 1782 to 1850; listing all men 21 and over. I would tell you the head of each RENFRO family in Botetourt Co 1782-1805. There are probably only a very few, but at least you could narrow it down to a finite list. Microfilms of the PPTL are available from the Mormans through any Family History Center. Botetourt 1783-1810 is microfilm # 2024486 - if you're in the Washington DC area, I have a copy on permanent loan at the Kensington FHC.

I'm looking for a RENFRO-BARTLETT connection, probably in the 1750-1770 - there are two half brothers: Joshua BARTLETT and Peter RENFRO adventuring around southern VA and probably into NC - they are mentioned together in 1762, and appear to be in the Halifax-Pittsylvania Co, VA area....

Jim Bartlett

Nathaniel Renfro - Decatur Co., TN

I've recently resumed looking at any and all Renfro/Renfroe names in Decatur Co., in an effort to try to connect to my already researched Renfroe names from Henderson and Roane Counties, TN.

In gathering information, I've become stumped with NATHANIEL RENFRO, and hope someone can clarify who he belongs to.

In the 1850 Decatur Co. census, I find Nathaniel Renfro (b. abt 1805, TN), with a wife, ALMINA (b. abt 1822), and children: Joshua (b. abt 1842), Wm. H. (b. abt 1845), Sarah J. (b. abt 1847), and Nancy C.(b. abt 1849).

I have not found them yet in 1860, but:

In 1870 & 1880 Decatur Co, there is a Nathaniel Renfro (b. abt 1811, TN), with wife, SARAH (b. abt 1833, TN), and children: William H.,(b. abt 1848 or 1850), Catherine (b. abt 1852), Hannah L. (b. abt 1864), Mark (b. abt 1866), Harriett E. (b. abt 1867), Martha (b. abt 1870), Nathaniel W. (b. abt 1872), Joanna (b. abt 1875) and Sophia (b. abt 1876).

Are these two men the same Nathaniel Renfro (slightly different ages), with two different wives, and questionable children's names? If they truly were two different men (b. abt 1805 and abt 1811), then who were "Nathaniel"(s) parents? I'm having a problem fitting them into a definite family.

Thanks for any help!

Pat
