They had a son by the name of William which is my greatgrand father in 1870. If you have any leads it would be greatley appreciated.

SHe has done a huge amount of work.
I had some work that I had done 7 or 8 years ago but was a bit sketchy on recording sources so not really sure where it was all from... probably Scotlands People and Family Search and a little bit of help from forums.
LEt me know if there's any particular bits you are looking for...one persons wrong branch is anothers direct line!!
Best wishes
Laura

I have also just found out that George Renton b 1811 was married twice which explains the surplus of children that I had been struggling to fathom after the death of his wife Phillis Pearson.
Thanks so much for your help!
BEst wishes
Laura

Hi Beryl
Thanks for your reply. The info I have on William is sketchy as I originally "found" him a number of years ago and unfortunately didn't record where I got the info. I have his wife as Margaret Clapperton (the use of Clapperton as a middle name is found in a granddaughter). I have no dates or locations for this couple.
Their chilidren were born 3 in Lauder, 1 in Stow:
Elizabeth b 12.2.1804
Christian b 31.8.1806
George b 23.2.1811, d1881 in Lauder
Alexander b 17.10.1818 (Stow)
Janet b 19.9.1819
My line comes from George - he married Phillis Pearson b 1810, d 1855 in Lauder.
George and Phillis' children were all born in Lauder:
Mark b 1837
Mary b 23.10.1840
Margaret Clapperton b 2.1.1843
William b 23.5.2845
Elizabeth b 15.12.1847, d 1883, Ladhope (near Galashiels)
My line follows Elizabeth who married Thomas Cochrane in Ladhope on 25.9.1868.

I have no definate info to connect William to Tranent other than records in Renton Family History of a Renton family who were born between Tranent and Channelkirk...this is only 5 miles from Lauder. They lived as Wiselaw Mill (WIsley Mill or Waisill Milne) which is only 2 miles from Lauder;
William Renton b 15.6.1743, married (Aug 1768) Mary WIlliamson c1747. They had 13 children between Channelkirk and then Tranent after 1770. Their son William b 29.5.1780 would be appros the right age to have married Margaret Clapperton as mentioned above.
There seems to have been so many Rentons in Lauder around this time and yet there are none now although a local gent does remember a Renton family living in the grounds of Thirlestane Castle...possible up to the 1950's
I will have a good look through your info when I get a little more time. Thanks for providing that for me!
Happy hunting
Laura

Hi ... I have lots of Rentons in the Scottish Borders and you are very welcome to whatever you want. If you can send me some other names and dates I could check for you as I do not have the particular William 1780, but have 1788. Some surnames are - STEVENSON, BLAIR, BONE/BAIN, LITHCANY, SANDERSON, ROWLEY, WITHERS, TROTTER - and they are only connected to a William Renton.

Sources I have for William who (maybe) married Margaret Clapperton:
Old Scottish Parochial Register (I'll have to do some digging to find the citation - it's not in my computer), born 28 Dec 1775.

The marriage to Margaret Clapperton was in an Ancestry.com posting by April Padgett. There was no source given, so this may be the wrong William?? Possibly your William, son of William and Mary Williamson?

Service of Heirs in Scotland, 1700-1855. (This is from a CD-ROM) "Renton--William. in Lauder, to his Grandfather James Watherston of Kirktonhill--Co-heir of Provision General--dated 4th March 1819. 1819, Mar.16." I assume this is the correct William, if his mother was Christian Watherston. He would seem to be still alive in 1819.

Sources I have for George:
Old family letter from William Renton (1786-1853, grandson of William Renton of Wiselaw Mill)to Richard Renton, written in Pittsburgh, PA, 20 March 1852: "The sons were Wm, George and John. I seem to think there was also a Petter but of this I am not certain." [The 'Petter' was also known as Patrick, and married Christian Gordon. I am descended from John.]

Christening from Old Scottish Parochial Register, Channelkirk. 161, film # 117294.

I have been unable to find out the origins of William of Wiselaw Mill. I have a photo of one of the buildings at the Mill and the sign on the road, sent to me by someone who lives in Oxton in 2001. Love the sign!

Hope we can sort this out!
Gail

I believe William is the son of George Renton and Christian Watherston. George was baptized at Channelkirk 3 June 1749. George (died 1858) was the son of William Renton, of Wiselaw Mill (died 1787), and, possibly, Jean Swinton. I have a little more information on these people, but a lot of it is unconfirmed.

Gail

My great-great-great-grandparents were James Renton (1748-1817) and his wife Janet Glas of Burntisland (near Kirkcaldy), Fife, Scotland. According to Emma Renton Bond's "Renton Saga", James was a designer of ship parts, a builder of ships and the owner of a ships dock and ropewalk. I don't know who his parents were.

James and Janet had a son James (?-1867) who married Mary Douglas Lockhart. He was a Baptist minister -- 25 years as pastor at Old Baptist Church in Kirkcaldy.

James and Mary had a son James.

My great-great-grandparents Thomas Renton (1800-1845), a son of James and Janet (above), and his wife Jane Fullerton lived in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, and had a son James (1831-1904) who married Mary Ann Brennan in Australia. He died in Kohala, Hawaii. James and Mary Ann had a son James Robert born 1859 in Ballarat, Victoria, South Australia, who married Blanch Wight from England. He died 1898 in Hawaii.

Thomas and Jane had a son Fergus Alexander (1833-1885) who had a son James (1864-1884) born in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Do you have any information on Elizabeth and James Renton on the Island of St. Helena, South Atlantic, late 1700s, early 1800s, please? Elizabeth killed a slave in a "fit of passion" in 1785, acquitted; Elizabeth died in 1795, and James Renton then married Sarah Clough in 1800 (St. Helena). Daughter Ann born 1802. Ann Renton married William Henley/Hindley in 1818. They sailed for England in 1831-ish. Ann (Renton) Henley died 1850, Hackney, London England. Eleven children born to William & Ann (Renton) Henley.

Also another James Renton who sailed from Yarmouth, England (possibly with his son, James), in 1814, on the "Glatton" to join the St. Helena Artillery.

Can anyone help with any information on these James Rentons, please? (births, parentage, etc.)

Many thanks - Margaret

They had children; Janet 1819,Alexander 1818,CHristian 1806, George 1811 and Elizabeth1804, that I know of. The children were born in Lauder and Stow.
Does this sound like a connection to anything you have? Wiselaw Mill is only 2 miles from Lauder.
regards
Laura

Hi!
Thanks for the response. I have some details on this family line. THe George Renton you mention also had a brother William born 1743. He then had a son with Mary Williamson; William, born 1780 in Tranent. This would make him a suitable age to marry my Margaret Clapperton...I just can't find anything to confirm this. Many of the family names used would suggest there is a connection. I have had this brick wall for years now! Interestingly, I know the family who currently live in Wiselaw Mill so I would love to establish a connection...I doubt our ancestors would recognise it now!

Charlotte Renton, William Renton

Hi I have two separate Rentons in my tree.

William Renton Blacksmith and Bellhanger of Gorbals Glasgow
who was born outside of Lanarkshire. According to the 1841 census was born around 1786. I know he had a brother called Archibald as he left him 5 pounds in his will.

He married Margaret Nixon in Glasgow in 1805 their first son John was born in Edinburgh.

His daughter Mary Renton married a Robert Thomson (occ. Lathesplitter) whose parents were Charlotte Renton and James Thomson (also a Lathesplitter) both of Edinburgh. Charlotte moved to Montrose around 1830.

Charlotte is the daughter of John Renton and Mary Fairlie of Gladsmuir, E Lothian.

I have no evidence that William Renton and Charlotte Renton were related in any way. However there may have a connection as William and Margaret had another daughter after Mary who was called Charlotte, who was born well before Mary and Robt married.

Does anyone have either of these two people in their own families.
Kind regards Theresa Simpson (nee Thomson)

A William born 1764 marred Isabella Stevenson in 1786, a John born 1750 married Margaret Windham.
Sorry but this is a different line and I do not have any of these people. Our Rentons came from Scotland, mainly Edinburgh, Berwick etc. I will keep your information in case anything comes along.
