Revel ancestry in United States

Am trying to trace Revel family from Alabama. Paternal grandfather Edward Selmon Revel, born approx. 1875. Large family possibly originating from Crenshaw County, AL. Anyone having any information, please post to this board or email to rrrevel@cox.net.

Re: Annie Grace Revill/Revel

I can't give a definitive answer, but the following might help.

There is an extracted IGI record giving the baptism at Bonby, Linconshire, of Annie Grace Revels on December 3rd 1858, parents George and Catherine. Extracted records are generally reliable, but the original would be worth checking.

A George Revell married Catherine Gilchrist registered Boston 1859-Q3 7a357 so it looks like the daughter was born before the marriage and the birth might have been registered as Gilchrist although I still can’t find anything.

A Grace Anne Revel is baptised Chester-le-Street, Durham 1859-Q4 but she appears in the 1861 census living with her parents at Lamsley in Durham.

1861 George (born Kirk Sandall, Yorkshire 1831) and Catherine Revell (born 1831 Kirk Sandall) living Bonby, Lincolnshire with daughter Annie Grace

1871 Father George lodging Worlaby with son Henry John Revels born Bonby 1863 but daughter and mother not present.

1881 George appears to have remarried and is living South Ferriby. Henry John is in the household as are three young children presumably from second marriage.

Annie appears as a servant living Cadney.

Mike

Annie Grace Revill/Revel

Looking for the birth certificate of Annie Grace Revill.

I have found a 1861 census that may be her at 5 years old and it lists her as Revel with Parents George and Catharine. This may be a misspelling but since I cannot find her birth it may be that she changed her name later on. She was born in 1856 in Bonby, Lincolshire and died Jan 2 1899 as Annie Grace Day. Any help would be appreciated as i am a little stumped. I can find her o the 1881 and 1891 census but the 1871, nothing if the 1861 is correctly her.

Perhaps I have replied befoe this.
Wm. Thomas Revel had a daughter Mary Elizabeth - and I have always surmised that the "Mary" was for his mother, Mary "Polly" Posey, dtr. of Benj. Posey. Wm. Thos was b. 1854, Talbot. Taylor Co., GA. Father was James A. Revel, CSA
Hope you are sill there. jj
I have started looking for more information on Hiram Revels,
I really appreciate everyone that sent me information. I have been lax in following up because of work etc. But because my mother is 89 now I really want to help her to find out about her ancestors. I am really going to put forth
an effort and see what else I can find out. If the gentleman
who sent me information on Lillian is still able to get me her phone number and I hope she is still alive and I have not waited too long. I would appreciate it.
Saundra

For more information, you can call my law office, 859-225-2348 and ask for Keith. To determine whether it is the same person, tell me what his nickname was when he was a kid.

Long time to reply - various illnesses, surgeries.
Before doing a lengthy reply, am not certain of divorce date, but I think (from grandmother Elizabeth REVEL Brock's memories) he was not long married to the second wife. Not SIX years, certainly I should think, within a year - or at least they separated - he sent her packing when he discovered that his children were having to eat at "Second table", leftovers, after her children had eaten - and other transgressions. Are you a BROCK descendent?
Mrs. White (who lived across the river) resumed caring for his chilldren when he was working away from home at his trade of Millwright, Carpentry. So, how do I get a copy of the marriage record you mention.
Jane REVEL Franklin/Johnson

Grandfather Tom and Grandmother Betty (Brock) lived in Clark (and other) counties in Arkansas before coming to Texas. They had five children, Esther (md. Wiley Moore), Lee and Roxie (no children); Riley had son Elliot (no children) and Kenneth who had a daughter and a son. Last time I saw Kenneth, he said his daughter was interested in family search but she never contacted me. The last of the five children was my father, N. Dezz Revel.
Hey,
I received your message. It appears that Claude Revels was a popular name during that time. From the research that I have done on Hiram, I know that he was born in Fayetteville, N.C. and that he was tri racial. Black, White, and Native American. It was suppose to have Cherokee in him also, but when we went to N.C. we found that a lot of Lumbee Indians were Revels also. I know that Hiram stated that he did not have any slaves in his family, they were all free.
I thought he only had three daughters. I know one married and settled in the state of Washington. Are you related on his wifes side? I have been searching for at least 25 years and keep coming to a dead end. You are the first person that I have made a connection with.
Double Cheers!!!
Saundra

So you have a lot of info on Revel's? I know there are a lot of spelling variations, but so far I know this is how it is spelled. Have Revel's that are from Prince Edward Island around the early 1800's. Thomas Revel married Mary McIntyre and had (I think) 6 kids. Mary, John, Gabriel, Flora,Ellen and Lucina. Their birthdates run from 1864 - 1876. if there is anything you can help me with let me know. So far I am drawing blanks. Thanks

Hello Cousins.
I am interested in obtaining any information you may have on a "Sindy Revel," who married a John Grice 13 Nov 1836 in Madison, MO. Another "Sindy Revel," married an Andrew Delrey 20 Feb 1853. I'm pretty sure this girl is of the Aaron Revel line who settled in Madison County, MO. Aaron had a daughter, Lucinda, who was born 04 February 1827, but she'd be too young to have married John Grice. Would anyone out there know who this, "Sindy," is? I am thinking her name would have really been Lucinda, but I can't place her.

Thanks in advance, Cindi Eppers.

Hello. I tried to find the book you mentioned online, but it wasn't available where I normally look for used books. However, there's about 5 different books which are available on Hiram R. Revels or have his biography included in them. Check these two sites and do a search for: Hiram R. Revels:

http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm
http://www.abebooks.com

Between the two of them, I found 5 different books. Here's two other sources which are handy for finding used books, but I didn't find any at this time on Hiram:

www.bookfinder.com
www.powells.com

Hope this helps, Cindi.

I am searching for any living descendants of SAMUEL LARRY REVEL who was born in Dubois County, IN on January 1, 1881 and died in Laward, Texas January 1966. He married Mary "Polly" Sue VANDIVER on October 18, 1899 in Dubois County, Indiana. I have record of the following children; more may exist:

Harold, Opal, Ruby, Nora, Edith, Ramond, & Pearl.

These REVEL's are cousins to my OSLAGE line. Family story has it that they left Indiana in an awful big hurry after my great-great-great grandmother's death in 1901. Am curious as to why, and if someone may possibly know what happened to my great-grandfather after his grandmother's death.

Will of Benjamin Revils, b.1787 in Southampton VA, d. aft 1835 in Raleigh, NC..

Benjamin Revils/Revell/Revelle was a son of Holliday Revel, Jr. (1756-1841) & Sarah (Sally) Whitfield(c. 1756-1820), who were married 25 Sep 1781 in Southampton, VA. He was born in 1787, and died after 9 Feb 1835, when his Will was recorded.

I recently visited the archives in Raleigh & was fortunate enough to find this Will. I've placed it on Rootsweb. If you get a chance to read, please do so. It is quite impressive. Benjamin was married to a slave & very intent on having her set free after his death. In the Will, he crosses all his T's and dots all his I's. (If you were to read the laws of North Carolina at this time, you would find that slaves who were set free could be instantly snatched up & placed right back into slavery if they remained in a slave-holding state. Benjamin wanted to make sure this didn't happen to Delia, his wife.) Also, once his estate was settled, he directed his Executor, Allen Jones, to keep the profits from it until his wife was safely seated in residence in a non slave-holding state. Only then was he to deliver the money to her. (In 1835, if a slave was placed back into slavery, all the money & possessions he/she had went to whomever enslaved him/her.) This information was obtained from "The Free Negro in North Carolina," part of "The James Sprunt Historical Publications," put out by the North Carolina Historical Society, published by the University at Chapel Hill in 1920. I found it on microfilm in the Family History Library (LDS) in Pensacola, FL.

If anyone wants to read this, let me know. I can scan the pages & email them to you.

Madison County Revelles

In regard to the Madison County Revelles, The original Revelles came to Madison Co. in 1812, Houck says in this History of Southeast MO. The first was Aaron Revelle and his wife Eve DeSha, John Lundsford and his wife, Susanna Row settled fruther south in Cape Girardeau Co. This was all Louisanna Territory at that time. This can all be proven by tax records and 1830 census. Aaron and Eva bought 40 acres in Madison Co. in 1829. Houck had no proof in his book that they were there earlier than that, the other Revelles were on the property tax records in Cape Girardeau 1817-1822. Prior to thatt they were in Christian Co. KY 1806-1814, this can all be proven. The elusive Etheldred is my 4th greatgrandfather, My daughter (Cynthia Eppers) and I have researched this for 6 years now, and still look for proof of Etheldred's orgins. We don't know for sure if Aaron was a son or brother to him, but know that John Lunsford was his son, also Davis Revelle, (my line) Henry Denton Revelle, James Marion Revelle, Thomas James Revelle, but not sure which Thomas, as there were 4 of them, daughter's, Susan, Mahala, And Nancy which maybe Nancy Eva, he was bondsman at a wedding 1813 in Christian Co, Ky. for Nancy Revelle and Louis Irwin
we assume it was a daughter but no proof, it could have been a sister. If anyone has any records or proof of any of these Revelle's could we please hear from you.

Just wanted to post an update to this thread, and thank a very nice gentleman who called me this week and cleared up the family "story" in regards as to why the Revel's left Indiana. I had also learned - before his phone call - that my great-grandfather was raised by his great-aunt, America Heins, until he was old enough to move out on his own. Thanks again for your help, sir! :)

Revel family in Kilkenny, Ireland.

I am trying to trace the Revel family from Kilkenny. My great grandfather was George Revel born 1871. He married Catherine Barry in St. Canice's in the late 1890s and moved to St. John's Wood, London shortly afterwards. Had served in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and was called up to serve in the Boer War. He died in South Africa in May 1900. Catherine later married Cornelius Kirby. On his marriage entry George's father is also named George, occupation a gardener. Revel is sometimes spelt with two l's.

I'm interested in learning about the ancestry of Hiram R. Revels' wife, Phoebe A. Bass. All I've found on her is that she was born in Ohio, about 1835, married 1849 to Mr. Revels in Butler Co. Oh. She does not appear in 1850 census although he is living alone in Cambridge City, Wayne Co. Indiana.

If anyone has any clues or information about her ancestry I would really enjoy reading it.
