I don't find anything on your Henry Ely and Nancy Caruthers. If you could give us some dates if you know them, that would help immensely considering how many Henrys and Georges there are.

Whatever you do, don't give up. I searched for 13 years for my Paternal grandmother and then just a few weeks ago I notice that my first cousin had it and had traced it back to the 1700s in Switzerland. Seems her family was YODER (one of the most prolific families among the Amish Mennonites. Needly to say, my whole line of thinking and research has switched to researching the Amish. I'll no doubt starve because of the sources I am purchasing. lol Just hang in there, you'll find it.
The Ely, Revell and Stacye families were close knit.
Sarah,
Your REVELL message board administrator
Have a look at the documents I have loaded to the RotherhamWeb site that has a graet eal of revell information. These large pdf files and trees are fully documented with notes of where the information came from. There are gaps and doubtless errors but it is a good starting place. Anyone who can fill the gaps or correct errors is welcome to contact Rotherham Web and the correction will be added and acknowledged at the next revision.

The Derbyshire Revells are covered in www.rotherhamweb.co.uk/revill/Part4TheRevellsofDerbyshire.pd... with earlier records in Parts 1 and 2. Nine parts in all. Please let me know how you get on.

Kind regards,

Mike Clifford

Hello all other Revells, my husbands family (his Great-grandfather)came from Ireland to Australia they lived at "Ballymoney" Wicklow, we have lots of old photos and just visited the area in July 2009. I have lots of info from Ireland but how did John Revell 1665-1740 get to Ireland? From where in England? We have the family coat of arms which seems to be very similar to to Warwick Revell's. It is eogeo shape with furs as back ground, Chevron with 3 mullets and the good bit is an Arm in Armour holding a lion's paw on a wreath. Also foliage draped from top corners.Passed down family law says the family was involved in the War of the Roses but all I have found is Richard Revell of Derbishyre who fought with Richard at the Battle of Bosworth, so lost his land because he choose the loosing side but I also found the contradiction that he was knighted can any one clear this up? We also have relics (?) that are supposed to be from Mary Queen of Scott's so does this put them with Lord Shrewsbury? This is all very interesting I wish I had talked more to Grandpa before he died who was the family historian. The family also married in to the Butler family from Kilkenny.

What I do have is in Part 5 of my documents on Rotherham Web.

I do know that a lot of what I have seen on the web regarding the American branches does not strike me as convincing at least with reference to the Old World records quoted.

If you have specific pieces of information I will try to advise as to their authenticity.

Kind regards,

Mike Clifford

Ada Hind (born Whitwell 1871), an elder sister of my maternal grandmother, Harriet Hind, married Richard Revell, and I have traced his family back to a Francis Revill and Jane who had several children baptised at Clowne in the 1650s.

By a process of elimination I suspect that Francis was born Morton 1622, son of William who was Churchwarden there.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who can confirm or disprove this, and would welcome any additional information that can be provided. In particular the identity of William’s parents, and William’s wife, and Francis’s wife and place of marriage.

Kind regards

Mike Clifford
I want to thank those who responded and requested the pages I offered on the Revell surname from the Ely, Revell and Stacye book. Hope I didn't overlook anyone. If so, let me know and I'll be happy to send them to you.

There were a few requests that were using the Ancestry contact service and I didn't think sending 38 pages would be a good idea. If you would send me your regular email address, I would be happy to send them. I promise not to divulge or sell your email address.>>grin<< With the amount of spam and junk mail out there I can understand your using the Ancestry contact service.

If anyone should know anything about the Ely and Stacye surnames mentioned in the book, I sure would love to hear from you. I am an Ely descendant. I am encouraged by the exchange of posts on the message board and trust there is an equal amount of SHARING information also. After all, that is what Rootsweb is all about. Sharing.

I noticed on Page 114 of the information I sent out where it said "No general genealogy of the descendants of the Revells has been compiled in America." The book was published in 1910. Wouldn't it be great if all of us working together could change that? Please let me know if anyone makes a connection to anyone in those pages.

Sarah McCray
REVELL Message Board Administrator

You both have been helpful. I knew I forgot something. I am looking for a "Revell" in the Carolina's to start. I know where a brother and sister live after marriage, but I have no parents. I did not know this surname has a place to go "British" in origin. I did not know that the English kept papers that far back, hurray. The sister died in 1928 in Coles Co., IL. The brother at the time of her death lives in Kansas. Elizabeths 1st marriage was to a Peter Hastings in North Carolina. Second marriage to a John W. Blythe around 1882 in IL, I really don't have much to go but a newspaper clipping. But I have found people with less. Thank you for telling me about the name changeing and different spellings and when/or if. I am printing out the postings so I have them on hand. Thanks to all in helping and a place to start.

The spelling is extremely variable, especially as you go back to the 1500s. The following are commonly encountered. The IGI concatenates most if not all of them, but most other databases do not.

Revell, Revel, Revill, Revil, Reavel and Reyvell.

Revelle and Reville also occur but less often.

The ame has a relatively narrow geographic distribution and some branches in Warwickshire, Kent and Derbyshire / Yorkshire are quite well documented, even back to the 1400s.

Mike Clifford

The Revell line I am investigating leads back to a Francis Revell who married a Jane about 1648, and who subsequently had children baptised at Clowne, Derbyshire.

At present I cannot identify the origins of Francis who presumably was born not later than about 1630.

There are no earlier explicit records of Revell at Clowne, but there are several earlier records where the surname has been abbreviated to R and which could be Revell, but it is not podssible to make a definite link to these from Francis.

These are Anna R married Williamus Harwood in 1562, Robertus R son of Robertus R baptised 1616, Dorotea R married Thomas Wodhead 1614 and Margaret R married William Butler 1627.

Apart from these, the earliest Revill record at Clowne is a baptism for Francis and Jane's child in 1649

I have established that

**this is not Francis Revill of sheffield who married Joanna Taylor in 1634 because their children's baptisms clash

**this is not Francis Revill baptised Annesley 1629 because he died the same year

***it could be Francis Reavell baptised Morton 1622 who had a son Francis baptised Morton in 1645, if indeed mother was Jane (or first wife died and he remarried) and they moved to Clowne.

Any corrections or additional information would be appreciated.

Mike and Jane

You might be interested to learn that there are numerous Revells buried in the churchyard at Wingerworth, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire - there are a number of Laurence Revells, this being traditionally the name given to the first born son, the earliest one being born around 1630 and the latest died in 1963, also one Joseph Revell was the vicar of Wingerworth in the early 1800's and also buried here. Thomas was the favoured name of the second born son - with my grandfather being the last of the Thomas Revells. The family were mostly farmers and landowners but a few also were landlord of the Barley Mow in Wingerworth. The Revell family crest also adorns the wall in the Blue Bell Inn, an old coaching inn by the church in nearby North Wingfield. A very old grave marker now used as a flagstone in the entrance to the famous 12th century Crooked Spire Church in Chesterfield also clearly displays the name Revell.

Re: REVELL or REVELLE or Revel in Missouri and Illinois (1800s)

Interesting middle name "Elijah". I believe the Revell family located in the heel of the boot of MO has been traced back to the Nash Co NC family of Edmund Revel who had two sons in the 1760s named Elijah and Micajah. I think the Micajah branch of the family moved to TN and subsequently to MO about 1800. The Elijah branch remained in NC until the end of the Civil War when they migrated to KY and on into IN and IL. Descendents of this branch live in KY IN IL OK and TX. There are several threads about this on Genforum website. There is some bad genealogy out there because of the fact that there were two Edmond/Edmund Revel families in NC about the same time one in Nash Co and the other in nearby Wilson Co. They are different families. Hope this helps. Johnny Revel, Lusby MD

Hi there.
I believe the family you are looking for is Elijah H Revel in Nash Co NC. I have a pretty good family tree maker file on this family.
Elizabeth K (Revel)Blythe was the 4th child of Elijah H Revel (b 1817) and Susanna Hammons (b 1815). Susanna died about 1850 in Cleveland Co NC. Elijah married Sarah Jemina Hastings in 1852.
After the Civil War the Revel clan moved west with Elijah and his younger children setteling and staying in central Kentucky around London Ky. The older children moved into central IL. There are still Revel descendents in Tolono (Sp) a town just a few miles south of Urbana IL. One of the brothers to Elizabeth K Blythe moved to Kansas and lived there the rest of his life. I have in my records that Elizabeth K is buried in Vicennes IN.

As for the name there have been several variations on spelling in the same family from records. Elijah H and his 9 older children and their descendents all spell the last name Revel. The 7 children of the second wife all spell their last name Revell.

I would love to have copies of what you have. I can provide family tree maker files and other hard copy records. Anyone interested can contact me at revelftm@aol.com

Hope this helps Johnny Revel

My great-grandfather James Elijah Revelle or Revell came from Missouri to Illinois around 1870 and married Sarah Mariah Stallings. Some census information spells the name Revell or Revel.
He was born in Missouri and lived in Stoddard County before that. His first wife was Julia Ann Sifford. They married in 1865 but she died in 1866.
I am looking for information about him and his family before he went to Illinois. Thanks.

So I am informed that "my" Thomas Revell in Stoddard County is NOT Etheldred's son, Thomas, who shows up at same time but in Bollinger County. Many thanks to Betty Bowermaster.

If anyone has leads for the Thomas in Stoddard and what happened to that family (I can only trace my gggrandfather, James Elijah Revelle (b. 1844), I'd be grateful.

Etheldred-Thomas line and Native American question can you help please?

I received information from someone more proficient and more informed than I regarding the Etheldred line, to the effect that there is no Indian in Etheldred's line. I have been trying to trace my great-grandfather back to Etheldred as his grandfather, with the belief from family lore that my great-grandfather was about 1/8 Native American.

Can anyone please help me? All I want to do is figure out where my great-grandfather, James Elijah Revell(e) came from and who his family were before he married my great-grandmother, Sarah Mariah Stallings (b. May 27 1846, d.
Nov 19 1921, all in Madison County, IL).

The Nix-Judy cemetery transcriptions have my great-grandfather as
James E Revelle, b. Dec 19 1844 and d. Sept 16 1897.

My grandfather's birth certificate shows his father born in MO.

The 1850 Census has a Thomas Revell with a wife Lucinda and a son James that *might* be his family--they are in MO near Madison County.

Thomas Revell
Age: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1813
Birth Place: Tennessee
Gender: Male
Home in 1850(City,County,State): Pike, Stoddard, Missouri
Household Members: Name Age
Adaline Revell 7
Henry Revell 12
James Revell 6
Lucinda Revell 27
Mary Revell 9
Sarah Revell 10
Thomas Revell 37
William Revell 1

This family seems to disappear after 1850--they together ot
individually do not show up in the 1860 census in MO or IL or KS. There were smallpox and cholera and influenza epidemics then, so maybe they died---except *possibly* for James, who would have been the right age.

So putting this in the context of no Native Amoerican in Etheldred's line, possibilities include"

(1) My family lore was just fantasy and there is no Native American in it at all.
(1A) In that case, perhaps my Thomas is the Thomas descended from Etheldred.

(2) If the Jameses were indeed part Native American, the percentages were higher and were introduced after Etheldred.
(2A) In this case, my Thomas *could* be the Thomas escended from Ethelred but his wife "Lucinda" might have been part or all Native American. ?????
(2B) Or my Thomas and James have NO RELATION AT ALL to the Etheldred line discussed below in the boards and
where they popped up from out of nowhere will forever be a mystery to me.

Can anyone you please help me? I have no personal investment in being (or not being) of Native American or FPOC descent. I actually do not care if I can go back to the 1600s even--I just wonder where my great-grandfather came from to marry into the well-established and
locally prominent Stallings line.

Any help (even just telling me to delete all my personal tree before the Thomas and Lucinda I found in the 1850 Census) would be most appreciated.

Thanks again for reading this and for any help you can give me.
