Benjamin Rexford-Esther Hall Marriage 1760 Wallingford, CT.

Benjamin Rexford born 1739 married Esther Hall July 1, 1760 in Wallingford, New Haven Co. Connecticut. Nearly everybody gives her birthdate as April 24, 1729, daughter of Caleb & Esther Humphreville Hall. That makes Esther 10 years older than Benjamin. Some have her first married to Ichabod Lewis who lived until 1778. I found the info on her marriage to Ichabod Lewis in a book on New Haven Co. families, no mention of a 2nd marriage. Some trees on Ancestry have children born as late as 1782 to Benjamin & Esther. That would have her giving birth as age 53 which is almost medically unheard of, especially in those days. I suspect there were multiple Esther Halls, & they were mixed up. A marriage record on Ancestry states the Esther who married Benjamin Rexford was born in 1741. If that's correct who were her parents?

Looking for any information on my great grandfather Robert Hix Rexford. I don't have very much information on this side of my family.

Here's what I have so far:

Robert Hix Rexford, born May 1879, born in New York
Married my great grandmother Katherine Mabel Doyle born 13 June 1885 Port Hope Ontario, Canada. She died 25 April 1975 in Michigan.
They had a daughter Dorothy Amelia Rexford, born 31 August 1900 in Syracuse, New York. Died 31 May 1974 in Michigan.

The story I've always been told is Katherine either divorced Robert or he died. Because Katherine remarries by the 1930's.

Any information will be most usefull. Thanks, Michele

Thomas,

Thank you for your response to my query. Since i posted it I moved out of state and did not see your response until tonight.

This information is very interesting. I wonder if the author was just drawing conclusions about Martin being the son of Joseph or whether this is one of those givens when family tradition is involved. The remark about Martin marryinga kniffen seems to indicate the author was indeed aware of some family tradition.

The only thing that doesn't fit with my Martin is the son Henry b. 1814, unless he stayed behind with family in NY as a young boy. My Martin was in Ohio by 1820.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tom Ridenour
restorer@fidnet.com

My husband's great-aunt, Mabel Medlar Schneider, has recorded that her great grandparents were Joseph Rexford (1772- 1836) and Anna Barclay (1777-1850). They were married in 1799. Their children were Anna, 1801, Adelia 1803, Joseph Foster 1805, John Milton 1808, Rebecca 1811 Henry 1814 and ? Skiff, 1817.
Adelia married John Medlar. They were Mabel Schneider's grand parents. I know that Henry married a woman named Hannah (?). You say here Hannah is the daughter of Harriet Medlar and Oliver Seely. Interesting.. John Medlar had a sister Harriet, who married James Seely and had no children. Harriet's sister Jane married Oliver Seely.

I just did some more digging and found Joseph Rexford in my files, son of Joseph Rexford b. 1732 and Lydia Spencer b. 1732. There is some discrepancy as to the year that Joseph Jr. was born -- it was either 1755 or 1763 -- in Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He married Prudence Rexford Finney, a cousin, daughter of Arthur Rexford and his wife Anna. I do not have a list of their children. Interestingly, Prudence's first husband was Martin Finney, to whom she was married on 30 January 1775.

This Joseph Rexford was brother to my ancestor, John Spencer Rexford, born 1774.

Levi Reford and Betsy Welsh were both born about 1783 in New Haven, CT. Children were:

Timothy
Ann
Betsy
Eli
Thomas
Levi (yours)(born 1829, New Haven, CT)

Levi married Lucina Dowd. I know nothing below on this line.
My line is through Timothy, who married Saphronia Cunningham. Their daughter, Florence Emily Rexford married Robert Dent Scott.

Above the senior Levi are parents Benjamin Rexford and Ester Hall. If you check the LDS website, you'll find many more above this point.

Richard

Martin Rexford

I am searching for the parents of Martin Rexford (abt. 1785-after 1837) who settled in Southington Twp., Trumbull Co., OH about 1815.

In the 1810 census for Sullivan Co., NY, p. 335, town of Thompson, there was a Martin Rexford (the only Martin in 1810) listed with one male 16-26 and one female 16-26. This would fit the age for my Martin. Also in the same town just a few doors down was a Joseph Rexford with 2 males and 2 females under 10, and one male and one female over 45. These would be old enough to be Martin's parents and were the only other Rexfords in the area. In 1800 the only Joseph was in Sharon, Litchfield Co., Conn., p. 174, listed with 1 male 10-16 (Martin?) and one 26-45, as well as 1 female 0-10 and one 26-45.

I did a little more digging and found that this Joseph was born in 1763 in Sharon, Litchfield, Conn. and married Prudence Finney there on October 27, 1785.

Does anyone have information that might prove or disprove this connection?

Many thanks,

Thomas Ridenour
restorer@shentel.net
Hi, if they were from that part of Vermont, then you are probably related to me. My birthmother(I was given up for adoption)was married to Donald Edward Rexford. I am trying to find out who his parents were and where they came from so I can trace my ancestory. I know some of the Rexford's came from Canada. But can they be traced to Daniel Rexford who came from Devonshire, England. Thanks for any information.
