I believe your Haywood Rhem is the son of John and that Edward H Rhem was his brother. Given your Rhem family is found in Craven Co, NC, I would start with Jacob Rhem, son of Melcher Rhem and then research his brothers, Joseph & John Rhem.

Melcher Rhem died in 1769 in Craven Co, so his children were born in the 1730-1740's, making any of his sons the right age to have John Rhem. This family tree shows Melcher's son, Jacob, did have a son named John b. 1786 which would be in line with your John, below.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d... You will note, that Jacob Rhem had a son named Joseph who could be the Joseph Rhem living 2 houses from John in 1820 and he also had a daughter named Christiana, who was probably your Christiana's namesake and he had a son named Edward H, which could be the namesake of John's son (and Haywood's brother) Edward H Rhem.

You will find records for this Rhem family in Craven, Jones & Dobbs (later became Lenoir) Co, NC. I am not a descendant of the Rhem family but have looked at them because Melcher Rhem named his son in law, Samuel White, as co-executor with son Jacob. I believe Samuel White was the brother to my ancestor, John White, both sons of Robert White SR.

Hope this helps

I am presuming that both Haywood & Julia were deceased by 1860 as "Christiane" Rhem age 18 & brother John age 15 are living in the home of William Simons (Simmons?) age 69 and a Kinsey family headed by Joel Kinsey, wife Nancy is shown as age 24, but it's possible she is Nancy Rhem. Joel Kinsey was the son of Jospeh Kinsey JR & his 3rd wife, Susan RHEM. Their brother William is living with EH (Edward H) Rhem and is shown as age 22 b. NC.
