I have a Ralph Rhoads b. Aug 1898, son of Clarence Rhoads and Nellie Shipman, g-son of Daniel Rhoads and Mary Miser. All are from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

I don't have much except his Ancestry, as he is not in my direct line, but I would be glad to share whatever I have with you if you feel there is a connection.

This family also has ties to Michigan, although that information is minimal in my records right now.

Valarie . coomerv at gmail dot com

Thanks for the interest. Not sure if this is the same line. The Rhoads' of my family are fairly well tracable to modern times. All are accounted for, even the ones who continued west. We have several lines that make it as far as California. Whether they kept in touch with the Indiana group is not known as everything I have is through census and other public records. I haven't found any who moved back to PA from OH, but there may have been uncles of Daniel who did and I just haven't found them yet.

I have much on Rhoads'/Rhoades' between 1840 and today, just nothing solid before 1840.

As far as the name changes, I suspect my family to be from the German Roth's or Rodt's. In the German churches records it is spelled Roth but in public records it is Rhodes (PA). The occasional variation of the Rhoads spelling appear to be a result of writer error. My specific family added the "a" [Rhoades] about the turn of the century with my g-g-grandfather and his brother. Never found out why for sure. Hope that helps you some :-)

If you still feel there may be a connection you can e-mail me at coomerv at gmail dot com

In the Rhoads genealogy book, "Antecendents and Descendants of Margaret Ann Rhoads Smith", there is mention of a portrait painting of Jonathan Parker Rhoads (1826 - 1867) from Crawford County, IL that was owned by the author (c. 1950)

Does anyone have a picture of said painting?

Re: Looking for info on Charles Rhoads (B. 15 Nov 1882, Gordon, PA)

While I can find no direct documentation of Morgan Roads's parents, I found some pretty conclusive evidence that his father was John Roads, b April 9, 1783 in Bucks County PA, died about 1866 in Hamburg,PA. His mother was Elizabeth Fritz (b 21 Aug 1783, d 23 Feb 1823 in Hamburg,PA). he had two older brothers Franklin Rhoads and Jacob Oliver Rhoads. His father Remarried in 1830 to Salomea Keller (b1794, d 1880). He had 3 younger half-siblings, Augustus Roads, Lovina Roads and Salomea Roads.

I found a biography of Morgan Rhoads in a history of Schuylkill County. It mentions that Morgan moved with his father to Hamburg in his infancy. This makes sense as Elizabeth Fritz died shortly after Morgan's birth, presumably to complications from childbirth. Also, Morgan has the same job as John Rhoads and Augustus Rhoads as a Boatman in Hamburg. In their later years you find Morgan and Augustus moving around the counties surrounding Hamburg, PA but living quite close to each other.

My next task is finding John Roads's father, although that may be very hard. Several family trees list Jacob Roth Rhoads as his father, but none of these are substantiated. As always any help is appreciated.

William RHOADS born 1779 or 1790

I'm trying to find out more about the parentage of my 3gr-grandfather, William RHOADS, of Lancaster County and Franklin County in Pennsylvania. The following link is one of my best sources, clearly establishing William as the father of John Adams Rhoads, about whom I have a lot of information from my grandmother's research:

http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/samuel-p-samuel-pennim...

However, it doesn't provide much information about William.

There are a variety of trees on Ancestry that include both John A. and William, and some of them have William's parents as Jacob and Rebecca —but I think this is a mistake, since some of those trees have William's own name as Jacob, and most of them list him as dying in 1853/4, despite there being census evidence establishing him as alive in 1860. So I don't think that's the right set of parents —or at least something isn't quite right there.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can research this further? I'd really like to find some kind of evidence confirming who his parents were.

I have found at least seven members of this family that have suffered from mental illness, three of whom I knew personally. They were living in the Gasconade Valley area of Missouri in the 1840s thru the twentieth century.Thank you!

Not sure here but my grandfather was William Erwin Rhodes, from Malvern AR, my mother was his oldest daughter, he died 1992. And that was his mother and fathers name. His wife died in early 1960's in the Seattle area. There are still two of his daughters living here and his old house place has become a City Park along the Ouachita River. The only "brother" I knew about was Sam Rhodes and he died several years ago. The family is not very close and most were private type people who kept to themselves. Some still do...

I cannot believe I have found a connection with my family. I am also a gggrandaughter of Sarah and Michael through their son John and wife, Lavina. I grew up in Crescent. I have been researching this family for over 25 years and have not been able to go back beyond Michael until recently. But I do have gobs of information on Sarah's family tree I got from the Burrier family. I would be glad to share what I have and would like to know what you have on Michael Rhodes. Which of Michael and Sarah's children do you descend from? I have been to Sarah's grave in Marshall. Shirley Rhoads Clark

Hi Keri! I'm wondering if your John A Rhoads is my John A Roads from OH. He fathered 23 children. One being my gg grandfather, Isaac Arthur Roads/Rhoads. Do you know his wife's name? Or any more info like her birth/death dates? I"m very interested in your response.

Hope to hear from you soon!
Mary Ann Rhoads-Richardson
Melvern, Osage, KS

Hi Jake! Glad to find you again on the lists.

How have you been? How's the researching going? Here's my connection with you if you've forgotten.

Valentin>Jacob>John Adam Your Phillip's brother. Hey did you know that after John died your ancestor became the guardian of my gg grandfather, Isaac, and his 5 young half-siblings? (1841) I just ran across that online Friday night! YAY! And did your Phillip change his last name to RHOAD dropping the S completely & added the H? I've found tombstones with it spelled that way. AND I find it interesting that my Isaac changed his spelling to RHOADS. I wonder if he wanted to go back to his dad John's spelling but didn't want to lose the H from his uncle Phillip. Idk just speculation on my part but I find it very intriguing. Would you have any documentation about the name change?

Have you made it to the family reunion in OH yet? I'm seriously considering going this year if I can make things work out. I have a reunion in NE for my hubby's side in June. We're raising our two young granddaughters now so it will depend on my daughter in AR being able to help out with them while I run off for the reunion. :)

My email again is auntiem1961@yahoo.com I'd sure like to connect with you again. I have summers off so that's when I have the most time to dig my heels in to researching.

I hope to hear from you soon!
Hugs cousin!
Mary Ann Rhoads-Richardson
Melvern, Osage, KS

I had a breakthrough. I discovered a Census listing for Schuylkill County, PA from 1891 listing Charles O. Rhoades, age nine and his family. I previously had no info as the 1890 Census from Pennsylvania was destroyed in a fire.
I've found two more generations of my family. Charles (b 1882) was the sone of Oliver P. and Catherine Rhoads. Oliver was the son of Morgan and Levina Roads. The families moved around alot between, Schuylkill, Northumberland and Berks counties, PA.

Now I'm having trouble finding the parents of Morgan (b aout 1823), Levina (b about 1821), and Catherine (b about 1859). If anyone has any info, please let me know.

Familysearch.org has some documents on this family. For example, Ohio, County Marriages, 1790-1950 reports that Norman D. Rhoads m. Hazel Kumley on 31 Oct 1921 in Bucyrus, Crawford Co., OH. Norman;s birthdate is given as 19 Jun 1903 in Wabash, IN, and his parents are Richard Rhoads and Lena Lassond. Hazel's birthdate is 9 Oct 1904 in Lagro, IN, and her parents are William Kumley and Clara Wintroad. The image of the document is available for viewing there. It certainly is possible that Norman may have lied about his birth year to qualify as old enough to be married without his parents' permission.

The site also has information from the 1930 Census, listing Norman, Hazel, and their children in Wabash.

The 1920 census for Richard and Lena (in Wabash) indicate Richard was 49 years old and b. in IN; his parents both were b. in IN. Lena was 34 years old and b. in IN, father b. in Canada, and mother b. in NY. Their six children (Samuel, age 18; Norman, age 15; Myrtle, age 10; Carmen, age 5; Leonell, age 2y10m, and Willdene, age 0m) all were b. in IN

The site also has information from the 1930 Census, listing Richard, Lena, and their children in Wabash.

The 1900 Census for Wabash indicates Lena was b. in Feb 1885 and that her father was French Canadian. She had been married to Richard about 1 year. Richard's birthdate is given as Apr 1869.

I am not related to this family and have no additional information.

Benita,
I have found numerous posts by you on different sites, and I figured it was time to send you a message. I, too, am looking for information on Norman D. Rhoads. The reason I'm curious is because I found out by accident that my favorite author's maiden name was Rhoads. We got to digging in our family history, and I am almost positive that I'm one generation away from finding a link in our family ancestry, but due to the fact that I can't afford a subscription to ancestry right now, I'm semi-stumped. I have found obituaries for almost all of Norman's chidren and siblings (at least the ones who are dead), but what I'm trying to figure out is who Richard Irvin Rhoads' dad is.

On a complete other level, I'm trying to figure out who Frank Leroy Rhoads' father is. I am ALMOST certain that Richard and Frank are brothers or first cousins, but I know NOTHING about their parents. I suspect that Frank's father's name is Elisha Pierce Rhoads, but that's just speculation. If you could shed ANY light on the subject, PLEASE let me know. If you'd like a complete listing of Norman's siblings and children (and a few grandchildren I know about), please email me at missdaphnetoon@gmail.com.
Thanks!
Katie Rhoads

Looking for Rhoads Family Info

Hello!
As mentioned above, I'm looking for some information on the Rhoads family. Our genealogy is as follows:

Elisha Pierce Rhoads (unsure)
Frank Leroy Rhoads (9 Children - Emmett, Lena, Edith, Okla, Earl, Kenneth, Esther, Leroy, and Florence)
Kenneth Kemp Rhoads
Melvin Glen Rhoads
Barry Melvin Rhoads
and then myself.

I have been told that our family comes from Oklahoma (three of my grandfather's siblings were born elsewhere, and then they moved to Oklahoma. Okla was the first of 6 children born there. ), but moved to DeRidder, LA, and settled there.
In the early 1900s (probably the 20s), a family feud took place between the siblings and their father (over religious belief differences), and my great grandfather, Kenneth, his twin brother, Earl, and ? of the other siblings moved to north LA. Emmett and, I believe, one sister, (Florence, maybe?) moved elsewhere. We are curious to know what happened to Emmett. We do know that he had a good many children, and he was living in Arizona. We'd like to know how many children he had, what their names were... etc.. I believe his full name was Harold Emmett Rhoads.

On another note, we have found some friends with very similar names in their Rhoads family genealogy, and are curious to know if anyone can find a connection there. The ancestry of their family as far back as we know is:

Richard Irvin Rhoads (Helen Lena LaSonde Rhoads, 8 children)
Norman D. Rhoads (Hazel Kumley, Maudie I. Gaines, 16 children)
George Irvin Rhoads
Colleen Rhoads Coble

The reason we are so interested in finding out if there is a connection is because of the "Lena" mentioned above. The great aunt I mentioned in the first ancestry is named Lena Helen.. and this one here is Helen Lena. I know for a fact that they are not the same person, though. Another odd coincidence is that Richard and Helen had a child named Emmett (whose obituary I can't find - died as infant, maybe?) - another not-so-common name... Leading me to believe that my great grandfather's siblings, Emmett and Lena, were named after these two people?

I'm looking for the parents of Richard Irvin Rhoads and Frank Leroy Rhoads. Curious to know if they may be brothers? Please help!

Looking for information relating to this person and his family, children, in-laws, etc.

Edward was the son of Thomas Early Rhoads and Susan Mabel White. Edward's wife was Clara Elkin, married in 1905 in Keokuk, IA.

I found an Edward E. Rhoads on findagrave.com buried in Watson Cemetery in Prairie Creek, Vigo County, IN, but I'm not sure if this would be the correct person. The date of birth on the grave marker is correct, but that's all I have to go on. The other person on the grave marker, Hettie C. Rhoads, I'm not sure about. The year of her birth looks about right, but I'm not familiar with the first name of Hettie. The "C" may have been her middle name for Clara. Neither one, Edward or his wife, are listed in the SSDI.

I appreciate any and all help and information.

Larry Gyger
Lsgyger@atlanticbb.net

She died in the Elgin State Hospital, Elgin, IL on Jun 29, 1931.
Thomas Died Nov 9, 1913 in Pasadena, CA. Last known address was 18 Pico Street in Pasadena.
Siblings include William 1839-1920, Priscilla Rhodes Gyger 1845-1915, Elizabeth Rhodes Akers 1846-? and Catharine Rhodes 1849-?.
I have ancestors that spell the surname both ways - RHOADS and RHODES. However, Thomas' death certificate is RHOADS.

Any and all information pertaining to Thomas and his descendants are greatly appreciated.

Larry Gyger
Lsgyger@atlanticbb.net

Re: Jacob Rhoads

Could you give more information on your Jacob? Because the Henry b. 1739 you mention sounds like a son of Henry and Catharine (Rheinhardt) Rhoads (alias Roth/Rhodt), and they also had a son named Jacob. Conflicts in birth location probably results from uncertainty... although if he was indeed born in the 1740's, I can't imagine him to have been born in Germany if his parents were indeed Henry and Catharine. Henry and Catharine are usually identified as having come over on a ship that arrived in 1737 (some have also said 1733... I haven't looked at those primary records myself). He probably settled first in Trappe, Pennsylvania, then moved to the Ephrata Cloister when he converted to Conrad Beissel's denomination.

There is a lot of confusion about this family pre-Ephrata, including mixups between the Henry (Heinrich) b. 1712 and his father with the same name b. ca. 1686... I've even seen it argued that Catharine Rheinhardt was the mother, not the wife, of Henry b. 1712. But we are at least fairly confident in knowing that they came from the Electoral Palatinate, and that they became followers of Conrad Beissel in America.

There is a lot of good reading on the Internet on the topic. I read an excellent biography of Henry b. 1712 but can't seem to find it again. Here is some additional reading:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/y/e/Ron-C-Myers...
http://www.kimmelfamily.net/Spec-Stonycreek.htm
http://genforum.genealogy.com/rhoads/messages/248.html
