Hi,
My Great Grandfather Isaac Irving Rhome b.1890 emigrated to America in between 1910 -1920 and resided in Brooklyn NY until his death in 1971 in Brooklyn NY. He spelled his name "Rome" when he came to America. I have no idea if anymore Rhome's are still living in England. He was born in England, but his father Morris, and mother Katey are from Russia. Do you have any info that can help me?

Thanks,

Howard Golden
Hudson, FL

Welcome to the Message Board! Yours is the first message I have received giving an indication that any Rhomes had come from Russia. Do you or your relatives maintain the Rhome spelling? Are these Rhomes still residing in England? Do you know if any have emigrated to America? It will be interesting to see if any other Rhomes with Russian roots reply to this message.

Well, Interesting enough, I have cousins in Greene county PA. My Dad's name was George, and he passed away in 1992. His dad was Charles, and I don't remember his Mother's name. He had a bunch of brothers and sisters and one that I know is from Greene county, which is Walter Rhome. I stayed with them for a couple of months back after my dad passed away, but haven't had any contact since.

The main thing I am trying to figure out, is where the name Rhome originated from. My dad used to tell me that we came from the Vikings, and I can't find anything online that confirms anything either way.

Hi--Let me know a little bit about your family. My Rhome
family is from the Greene County region of Pennsylvania, the very southwestern most corner of the state. There are other Rhome families in and around Monessen, PA who I have not connected with, and in Westmoreland County, PA. There is also a large contingent of Rhomes in Texas.

Give me some names and locations so I have something to go on. Where are you from. What were the names of your father and grandfather or anyone else you might know who share our surname.

Hi Rebecca,

I am cleaning up my e-mail files and I came upon your message. I'm sorry that I did not see it originally, but my inbox is always loaded. In reviewing my tree, I see that I do not have your fiance's grandfather in my tree. Could you let me know more about his parents, so I can figure out the connection? As for a gedcome file, I have started working exclusively online in Ancestry. I have had trouble trying to update my Family Tree software file from Ancestry. I will look into this again, and send you something if I can figure it out. Meanwhile, if you would send me your e-mail address I will communicate more. My own e-mail is milota@jcu.edu.

When is the wedding? Congratulations in advance on joining the family!

Marcy

BTW - his Rhome family was originally from Moundville, but his grandfather Donald E. Rhome lived/died in Litchfield, OH.

Thanks for any help you can offer - it would be greatly appreciated!

If you have a current subscription to Ancestry, you should be able to connect to my information by searching one of the Rhome names in your family tree. If you are not a current subscriber, contact me and I can send you my info over the internet.

Launching Rhome Surname message board

My Rhome family has its origins in Greene County, PA.
My great great grandfather is enumerated in the 1850
Census in Franklin Township as Henry Rom, age 27.
Cited with him are Mary, age 24, William, age 6, Jonas E.,
age 5, Jacob, age 3, Melissa J., age 1, and MarY Hanna, age
71. In the 1860 Census for Aleppo Township, he is enumerated
alongside a Jacob Rum, age 67, who I believe may be his father.
My great grandfather, Henry Harrison, was born ca. 1860 and
appears in the 1870 Census as a 9 year old. His son Melvin,
b ca. 1880 is my grandfather. There are many questions, but I'll
start with this one. In the 1860 Census, Jacob is listed with an
Eliza, age 45, and 2 children, William, age 6 and Delila,
no age cited. Is Eliza, Jacob's wife or a daughter?? Any
information on this family would be useful.

Hi Marcy,
With lots of help from others, I have managed to find information on this family line, I am interested in particular, because Melissa Rhome grew up to marry John W. Coutz (my great great grandfather) and they had TONS of kids. Possibly to answer *your* question, I found a pedigree on Ancestry.com, done by scoul48@msn.com, who lists the following as siblings of Melissa - John Rhome
William Rhome
Jonas Ely Rhome
Jacob Rhome
Kate Rhome
Othol Rhome
Harrison Rhome
James Rhome
Elizabeth Rhome
AND Henry Rom as the father / Mary Craig as the mother.
I am working on typing up the current information of Melissa Rhome...so if you are interested, I'll put you on my list of ones to send to when I am finished...
AND

Ida,
As far as I know, that name isn't in my line (at least as far as I've found so far). Could be a cousin or sister of my Henry Rom, who married married Mary Craig, then fathered Mary Rhome, who in turn married Leonitis Coutz, who parented my great-great grandfather. (Whew!) I haven't had much time to do much research in the Moundsville Court House yet, although I *really* need to do so. First I've got to get some kind of organization going with the information I have now (right now it's stuffed in an oversized shoe box!!). I will keep your name in mind though should I come across her I'll let you know.

Patty

The names of my Melissa (Malissa) Rhome's brothers and sisters were:

John Rhome
William Rhome
Jonas Ely Rhome
Jacob Rhome
Kate Rhome
Othol Rhome
Harrison Rhome
James Rhome
Elizabeth Rhome

I have been looking for my grandmothers line for quite a while, but with no luck. All I know is her name was Ida Ellen Rhome, she married John Thomas Hill. Among thier children were: Oak, Harry,Gayola & Guyola- twins born 7-12-1911. There are more children unknown to me. Gayola married a Dolin and lived in Moundsville. My mother married William Henry Brown whose family was prominent across the river at Powhatan Point. They moved "upriver" to the Wellsville, Ohio area.
