I am looking for family members with the last name of Rice and possibly Zeugner (my father's sister - Lillian) who married Uncle Paul. I believe my cousins names were Paulette and Christine. They had a german shephered by the name of Prince and at one time used to live in Old Tappan. Please contact me by e-mail. clhjam53@aol.com

Daniel Rice (1813-?) Noble co., Indiana and son of Samuel Rice (1778-?)

I have a Daniel Rice who was born in New York around 1813. He married to a Lucina ? and had the following children:
Eliza, Harvey, Harley, Lovina and Martin. He later married Nancy ? and had several more children. They lived in or around Noble co., Indiana in Allen and Rome twnshps until the 1870's when they moved to Livingston co., Missouri.

In the 1840 census of Noble co., Indiana, Daniel lives next to (I presume) two brothers Orrin and Sofronus. They live next to Samuel Rice who is listed as between 60 & 70 years of age and I feel is probably his father.

I have read many posts on here about Orrin being Samuel's son along with Alvin but never any mention of a Daniel. Can anyone confirm that Daniel is also one of Samuel's sons? I am interested in proving this connection and finding out more information on Daniel's wife Lucina ?.

Pittsburgh Rice Family circa 1900-1920

My great-grandmother shows up on the US Census (along with her siblings) in 1920 -- all are adults. We can find no trace of her -- Jane Marie Rice Remly -- before that. No church records in spite of her lifelong claims to be Catholic, no record of her many, many cousins b/c there's no recollection of last names. There's also reason to consider that Jane's ancestry may include individuals who are not European -- Semitic, Arabic, Melungean, Roma, Black Dutch, etc.

Jane's siblings were John, Arthur and Margaret. No confirmed names for her parents -- father may be Charles or John. Mother perhaps Ursula aka Sallie.

As noted in the 1840 census.
one male age 20-30, one female 5-10, and one female 15-20.

Looking for some female named Margaret whom married the missing male 20-30 in age on the 1840 census.

They may be related to a John Frederick Holster, as a remarried mother named Margaret Rice.

Other possible last names for this Margaret was Hickman or Higgeson, or other spelling variations. This Margaret was married many times, I cannot find her. The John Rice Connection is my best chance of finding her.

John Frederick Holster, moved from Ohio to Guthrie Iowa, and Logan Rice (cousin) the son of Christopher Rice (uncle), went with him.

John William Rice revisited

One of my persistent brick walls is my maternal great grandfather, John William Rice. The only clues to his existence are the 1880 US census for Cleveland, OH, in which he's enumerated with wife Minia (Mina?) E. and two children, and the birth returns for those two children which I recently received from the Cuyahoga County archives. In the census, John's age is given as 30, which implies a year of birth of 1850, give or take, and his occupation shown as boot and shoe maker. He's reported as being born in Vermont, as are his parents. The birth returns for the children seem to confirm his birth in 1850 but offer no other clues. I do know that Minia/Mina and the children next appear in Denison, Grayson County, Texas, in the 1900 census, in which Minia reports herself as a widow. What happened between 1880 and 1900 is anybody's guess, tho' there are indications that John did NOT die in the interval (as the family were Catholics, divorce was probably out of the question, but ...). And that, dear hearts and gentle people, is what I know or think I know. There's no question that John is the father of my maternal grandfather, but he's otherwise something of an enigma.

I realize that John Rices are a dime a dozen on a good day, but I wonder if anybody here might have some sort of clue, hint, tidbit, dope slap, what-have-you that'd help me get past this roadblock.

Help?

Bob Melson

Pete passed on his love of adventure, the outdoors, photography and his quick sense of humor to his family.

Pete's recreational and leisure interests were tied to his love of the outdoors and the central Washington landscape. He was an avid hiker and he enjoyed kayaking and exploring the central Columbia Plateau. His keen interest in indigenous plants led him to hold classes on plant identification for the Forest Service Survival School.

After graduating from high school, Pete enrolled at Grays Harbor Community College and later enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Eretria in North Africa and worked in Army Intelligence for the Korean War effort.

Pete returned from his military service and enrolled at Washington State University in 1958. At the time, the WSU anthropology department was among the leading multidisciplinary paleoenvironmental research institutions in the nation, and Pete often spoke fondly of his early years there. Dr. Richard "Dick" Daugherty was his mentor and a guiding influence on Pete's development both personally and professionally.

In order to broaden his research experience, in 1959, he attended field-based training in Alaska and at the University of Oregon. On returning to complete his Master's Thesis Pete conducted research that would help change our understanding of the antiquity of humans in the Pacific Northwest. Completed in 1965, his thesis provides details of the earliest artifacts from the deepest levels at the Windust Caves, including the Windust-type stemmed biface.

While at WSU, Pete took part in many important field research projects, including the excavation and analysis of Washington sites such as at Marmes Rockshelter (1962-69) and at Ozette (1966-67 and 1970-81), where for several years he served as assistant director. Additionally, he was present on a research expedition to Valsequillo in Mexico. In 1962, as Egypt's Aswan Dam project was getting under way, he helped survey the reservoir area along the west bank of the Nile River in northern Sudan. His discoveries there included lithic hand axes 500,000 years old.

In 1967, Pete took the staff position of highway archaeologist. One of his first projects was located in the Moses Coulee, near Wenatchee. During the course of work he invited first-term Spokane Congressman Thomas Foley out to see the site and its findings. Congressman Foley later became speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and never forgot about archaeology because of Pete.

In the late 1970s Pete played an active role in the formation and field activities of the Washington Archaeological Research Center (WARC), established at WSU as an independent agency to maintain a site record system for archaeological sites in Eastern Washington.

When WARC's charter changed in fall of 1980 Pete moved to Eastern Washington University where he established Archaeological and Historic Services (AHS). AHS/EWU became one of the most long-lived and successful archaeological programs in the Pacific Northwest, accomplishing major field projects and studies for Bonneville Power Association, Washington State Department of Transportation, and the Middle Columbia Public Utility Districts throughout the 1980s and 90s.

In 1984 Pete completed his PhD dissertation in the Department of Anthropology at WSU. Titled, "Native American Dwellings and Attendant Structures of the Southern Plateau," it is a historical collection of archival photos of Plateau Indian housing which stands as the only comprehensive work on the subject. Always willing to provide practical help, his expertise on native structures contributed to the development of a full-sized reproduction of a Wanapum longhouse that was open to the public several times between 2000-2004.

In 1992 Pete retired from AHS and in the summer of 1995 he moved on to work as the Colville Tribal Archaeologist under Adeline Fredin at the Colville offices in Nespelem. In 2000 he was hired as cultural resources coordinator at Grant County PUD, where he led the Cultural Resources department as they began the process of obtaining a new license for the Wanapum and Priest Rapids dams. At Grant PUD he played a critical role in leading the largest and most intensive cultural resources inventory effort at a hydroelectric project in Washington state. During his years at the PUD he developed strong friendships with the Wanapum people and he enjoyed his dual role as researcher and advocate for Wanapum cultural resources issues and concerns. Through this work with the Colville and Wanapum people Pete was successful in helping to craft a model for Tribal participation in the regional scope of cultural resources programs across the Columbia River system. Pete was employed as senior archaeologist at Grant PUD until his untimely death.

A prolific writer, Pete authored and co-authored many professional archaeological and cultural resource research reports in Washington state. He directly influenced the course of cultural resources management as one of the first "contract" archaeologists in the state - most practicing archaeologists in the Pacific Northwest have worked for and/or with Pete at one time or another over the past 40 years.

One of Pete's favorite pastimes was also a central part of his professional expertise - his photographic skill. Pete provided state-of-the-art assistance to archaeological staff in preparing report covers and in artifact photography. Where most people record two-dimensional photos of objects and things, Pete was able to capture depth, warmth and context. Whether it was a single artifact or a landscape, Pete could convey the essence of the total scene in his photos. His photographic contributions to Washington archaeology are especially notable in the published works of Ruth Kirk and Dr. Richard Daugherty. He was a noted HABS/HAER large-format photographer and used his skill to contribute to the historic record. He also worked in the area of portrait and wedding photography by running a successful studio as Pete Rice - The Photographer in his hometown of Colfax, Wash.

Pete's adventurous nature is demonstrated by the period of time he spent in the 1980s as a law enforcement officer. He began as a reserve officer for the Whitman County Sheriff department and went on to work in the jail control room. He eventually earned a position on the Whitman County/Pullman Police Department Swat Team as a counter-sniper and was a relief officer for Colfax Police Department as well as a volunteer firefighter.

As an archaeologist, Pete's interest in prehistory was balanced by his awareness and concern for modern Native American people. His work with the Colville, Wanapum and other Columbia Plateau Tribes was based on his fundamental respect for Native American issues. Pete believed above all in the critical importance of incorporating Native American concerns into the process and outcome of archaeological research and cultural resources management. Pete recognized that archaeological relics of the past still play an important role in the lives of Indian people. This direct link to people played a primary role in Pete's work and his lifestyle and he considered this connection as more significant than just simple academic studies of "prehistory." His many deep friendships with Indian people across the Plateau are testament to this commitment.

In keeping with Pete's love of the outdoors, his family suggests that memorials should be made to Conservation Northwest.

A graveside service for Pete will be held Saturday, June 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home, Colfax, WA is caring for the family, online condolences may be left at bruningfuneralhome.com.
In researching my family, I came across a tombstone at the Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, TN.
All it had on the headstone was:
Son
Michael Rice
Mar 21 1949
Jan 20 1965

My great grandfather was George Washington Rice (1915-1990). Does anyone know if Michael is part of my family? I have not found who his father nor mother was so I can't verify any relations. It was a row in front of my great grandparents and besides a Rhonda Ellen Dyer tombstone, which had mother on it.

Thanks!

I would like to contact descendants of Sallie and Carrie Rice who were daughters of Andrew Rice, a Baptist preacher, and Keziah N. Gilreath Donald Rice. They were born in Bartow County GA, Sallie about 1878 and Carrie about 1881. They also had a brother Jim who may have died young. I do not know who these girls married and cannot find the family after the 1900 Bartow Co. Census. Can anyone help? Any information greatly appreciated.

Gladys Rice Chissom family from New York

Rice Family, If you get the Royce Quarterly you will see the obituary of Nancy Farmsworth submitted by Beva Chissom Meagher, her cousin. Nancy corresponded with us back when we were all digging up Rice family. Her mother was Gladys L. Rice. Well, here is the obituary from the Royce Quarterly.

Nancy passed away Feb. 7, 2008 of cancer. She contacted me about forwarding some of her Rice & Chissom family research to me. A box was sent to me containing your 2007 Royce Quarterly. I thought you might like to add to your next newsletter Nancy's obituary.

Nancy Elaine Chissom Farnsworth born 16 Feb. 1941, Waterloo, NY to Gladys L. Rice (b 18 Jan 1921-d 1 Dec 2000) & Clarence W. Chissom (b 29 Dec 1911-d 28 Oct 1987). Nancy died of cancer Feb. 7, 2008 in Tucson, AZ She was a member of the Mormon Church and assisted in research at the Family History Center in Tucson. She had one daughter, Elaine, who died shortly after birth. She had one brother, David, who is also deceased.

I am in contact with Emery Rice (phone # 585-786-5724) a cousin of Nancy and will be forwarding on to him any information I have sent to me from Arizona and Nancy's collection of research. We are currently in the process of identifying what photos have been sent to me. One being a Photo of John Rice (Nancy's maternal grandfather) born in 1885.

Next to the photo it says: This is a photo of John Rice born 5/24/1885 died 1/9/1964. Married Beatrice May LaBarron born 5/10/1893 Hammond, PA died 1/11/1944 Bath, NY. They had several children (my note - 2 girls Gladys and Myrtle) including Gladys L. Rice born 1/18/1920-died 12/1/2000; daughter (my note - not daughter but son) of Levy Rice (my note - David Levi Rice) 1858-1912 & Sarah VanSile 1865-?

John was a rail inspector and suffered a tragic accident in that his legs were cut off below the knee when pinned between two rail cars. He then went on to farm in Addison, NY.

Information per handwritten records of Nancy Elaine Farnsworth.

Funeral Announcement
Gladys L. Chissom

Bath -- Gladys L. Chissom, 79 of 9230 County Route 7, Avoca, died Friday, December 1, 2000, at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath. A former resident of Addison, where she attended school, Gladys has resided in the Avoca area since 1947.
She was a homemaker and a former member of the Wallace Wesleyan Church.
Martin L. Rice (abt. 1844 - ?)

I'm trying to get some more information on Martin L. Rice. The first definite information I have on him is in 1870 when he is living in Berlin, Clinton Iowa and married to Amanda V. Smith. Two other possibly brothers names Justice b. 1841 and Peter b. 1845 are living with him. In 1880, Martin and Amanda are living in Ashton, Monona, Iowa. In both the 1870 and 1880 censuses, Martin's birth place is listed as Ohio. However, in the 1885 Iowa Census his birth place is listed as Indiana. I can find his wife in the 1905, 1910, 1915 & 1920 but none contain Martin so I'm assuming he died between 1885 & 1900.

I can find a Martin Rice in the 1860 Census born in Ohio and living with parents Daniel and Nancy living in Indiana. I suspect this is him since one sister Lovina is listed in the confirmed 1870 census as well as this one. They are found again in the 1850 census with parents Daniel and this time Lucina Rice.

Anybody have this line of Rice family in their records and can you shed some light as to whether Daniel & Nancy or Daniel & Lucina are Martin L. Rice's parents?

RICE FAMILY IN MISSISSIPPI

my grandmother referred to herself as "Louise Rice", however the name listed on my grandfather's (Prentiss Ray Wheat) death certificate is "Louise Rattler".

My understanding is that her and her mother were abandoned by the "Rattler" man while she was still a baby, and she was raised by her step father who was a "Rice".

The only other info I have is that my grandmothers children were born in Mississippi.

Does anyone have any ideas who this stepfather could be?

thanks,

terri
Stuart Rice of Elgin IL.

Seeking relatives of Stuart Lee Rice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rice, of the Elgin, IL area. I recently attended an estate sale and purchased a scrapbook that contained a clipping on Stuart Rice enlisting in the Navy for WWII. Clipping contains his school history, address at the time, employment, and a photo. Would be happy to reunite this clip with the right family. Please email me at tamburrino@comcast.net or reply to this post. Thanks!

Rice Family book

My family had a Rice Family book that we received quite a few years ago. My maiden name is McDonnell and my family is descended from Patrick McDonald who married into the Rice family. I think the book was white, with a family shield and the name Rice in green. Our copy of the book is lost and I am hoping that someone can give me information as to how I can go about getting another copy. There are quite a few family members that would like the information from the book. I would really appreciate any help.

JAMES RICE - GA

James Rice (b. abt. 1850, GA) was married to Luthemia (may have been Mary Luthemia and may have been called "Mollie") Turner who was b. abt. 1852/54, TN or GA. I'm told they had a daughter named Jessie Manetta who married a man named Rogers. I have a copy of a photo taken at a Turner family reunion abt. 1910 in Huntsville, AL where Luthemia's older brother Houston lived at that time. Those attending were descendants of George W. and Elizabeth Alexander Turner of Hamilton Co., TN and Catoosa Co., GA. I'm descended from one of Luthemia's younger brothers. I can't identify anyone in this photo other than the ones that I'm directly descended from. If there are any other descendants who might have a copy of this photo and can identify any of the people in it, please contact me.

I am still searching for the descendents of Riley Rice (prob. born in late 1800's) and Margaret Scott Rice (b. 1895). They were married on 19 Jun 1913 in Noble Co., IN. Riley was the son of James W. Rice ande Rebecca A. Randall. Margaret was the daughter of Andrew Scott and Anna "Agnes" Flanery/Flannery.
