HAMMOND, “Queenie” Billie June (RICHEY) (ASHLEY) gently died June 15, 2009. Born June 14, 1922, Blanchard, McClain Co, OK, the only child of Thomas Alphus RICHEY & Jewell Dealva WYNN.
Moving to Texas in 1934, she was a 1939 graduate of Houston’s San Jacinto High School. Active in the Park Place Rainbow Girls, where social events with the Order of DeMolay introduced her to Jack Vickrey ASHLEY, a student at Milby High. They married June 4, 1939 at Park Place Baptist Church, ending after 38 years with Jack’s death in 1977. They were wonderful parents of Tom, Jackie, & Lyle whom they raised in South Houston & Pasadena. Queenie was Certified Medical Secretary for Drs Wallace & Herrera, Radiologists. She & Jack were very active in the Gulf Coast Airstream Club, traveling extensively, playing bridge along the way. They also owned and operated Mobile Hosts Trailer Park in Goodrich, TX.
Queenie was blessed again to marry Joseph William HAMMOND in 1978 at Club Lakeview, Waller Co, TX, ending after 20 years with his death in 1999. Most of those years they enjoyed their business of “Queenie’s Antiques And!” in Waller, until they retired to Panorama, TX shortly before his death. She was a member of Woodlands Community Church of the Nazarene, and also attended Conroe Presbyterian while a resident at Carriage Inn in Conroe.
She is survived by sons William Thomas & wife Glenda (TODD) ASHLEY, Palestine, TX and E.Lyle & wife Janet (McGAVIN) ASHLEY, Conroe, TX, and daughter Jacqueline June (ASHLEY) PACE & husband Jerry Burns PACE, The Woodlands, TX.
Also 7 Grandchildren & 19 Great Grand children: Andrew James ASHLEY & James, Palestine; Kimberly ASHLEY KANETZKY & John, children Ethan & Emma, Naples, Italy; Elise PACE EATON & Jeff, children Melissa & Chris WALKER, Michael & Jason EATON, The Woodlands; Jack Burns PACE & Mila, children Richard & Jaqueline, Palestine, TX; Billie ASHLEY GORRELL & Dennis, children Sarah & Madeline,Conroe; Jack Cooper ASHLEY & Bethany, children Alex, Jack, Cooper & Campbell, Conroe; Heather ASHLEY NELSON & Karl, children Gavin, Ava, & Grant, Austin, TX.
Queenie’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, June 20, 2009,2:00 PM, Woodlands Community Church of the Nazarene, 5417 Rush Haven, The Woodlands, TX. (www.wccnaz.org). Donations in her memory may be made to her church, and verbal memories can be shared at the service. “Gone of Heaven at 87”
