Re: William Richey - South Carolina 1804, Illinois 1832 to Texas 1837

The information, which was shared with my by a distant cousin, is that our Richey ancestors were in Lunenburg County, VA prior to the Revolutionary War. She has travelled extensively and has seen a document either at the courthouse or the genealogy library for the state of Virginia, a petition signed by our Thomas Jefferson which had a list of petitioners signatures, including our ancestor, which stated that all of the signors could not afford to pay the Church of England the tithe the Church was demanding and that they could hardly support their own church.
Rita and her husband have been researching the family for a number of years and have gone to Scotland where they did find more info on our ancestors. Unfortunately, Rita does not have her info on the computer, so can't check that. But the info we do have shows that our Richey ancestors moved to Tennessee, then Kentucky and the final destination of the original Richeys' to settle in what was Gallatin county Illinois (now split into a number of smaller counties.)
There is legend that I have heard of us descending from some one in Scotland who was involved in an important battle in Scotland, but I don't have that info.
I do know, that in the counties around Saline, Williamson and several others, all of the Richeys in this area are my relatives. The one collection of books compiled by one of my mother's cousins has numerous names and history of the family.
However, as we moved last summer from Pennsylvania back "home" to Illinois, I think all of those books are still packed in one of the many unopened boxes in our garage.
And I don't personally know of any Richeys who may have gone to Texas -- which does not mean that they didn't but just that among the original members of my Richey family, they were here prior to the Revolutionary war and after that moved westward to TN, Kentucky and lastly, Illinois.
And I do know that because of the number of Richey's one can find in Illinois from at least around the 1830's, I am one of the descendents of that group.
We have a rather interesting pattern of repeating first names in many generations which in turn lead to variously given names have the title of "Little" Grant (my grandfather), "Little" Lou or Louis - "Little" Louis was my mother's cousin. And I would say that it is more than likely that those who were named William often were known in the family as "Little" also --- just a way for prior generations to know which man they were speaking of.
So, I don't believe your William Richey is a member of my immediate predocessors. Which does not mean we are not related, just that my Richey group lived in Virginia prior to the date you have William Richey in South Carolina.
There are so many Richey's scattered all over it amazes me.
And since we have moved back to Illinois, I have seen more names mentioned than I was aware of previously. On the other hand, I have not lived in Southern Illinois since 1974 and for the 9 years prior to that, I was caught up in my studies at Southern Illinois University.
Mary Castle
Hi,

I'm one of your distant cousins (if you're a Richey). We've traced our family back to Scotland and the Battle of Colluden in Scotland; the losing side. At some point a large part of the family moved to Ireland, perhaps because of the above but I don't know. My understanding is that they were protestants. From there it seems that the whole family upped and left for North America (1847 famine). However, clearly there had been an ongoing exodus of Richeys to North America for many years before that.

My father's ancesters were mainly military men serving in the British Forces for at least the last four or five generations. We are pretty much the only Richey's in England. Hope this is helpful.
Louise Richey

Sadie (nee Richey) Williams obit March 1972 Hall Co., GA

Mrs. Williams

GAINESVILLE – Funeral services will be held tomorrow (March 30) at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Ward’s Funeral Home of Gainesville for Mrs. Sadie Ritchie Williams, 97, of Gainesville.

The Rev. Ford Skinner will officiate and interment will be in the Chestatee Baptist Church cemetery. The body is at the funeral home and will be placed in the chapel at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Mrs. Williams, a native of South Carolina who had lived in Hall County for the past 51 years, died today (March 29) at a private convalescent home following an extended illness. She was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Clarence Williams, Ralph Williams, both of Gainesville; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. W.T. Williams, Atlanta; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

29 July 1927

Williams Found Dead Pinned Under Auto

Mr. C. B. Williams, well-known traveling salesman of this city, was found pinned underneath his overturned car on the detour near Flowery Branch about midnight last Thursday by passersby, and was dead when found. The car had turned around after skidding and was headed in the opposite direction, lying on its side near the road, and with headlights still burning. It was lying across Mr. Williams’ chest, and life was extinct. Two strangers had been attracted by the position of the car, and after they had stopped and found the conditions, they hailed another car which contained Messrs. Clyde Thompson and C. V. Nalley of this city. The car was lifted off Mr. Williams and the body brought to the undertaking parlors of Stow, Bell & Co.

A coroner’s jury empaneled Friday rendered a verdict that Mr. Williams came to his death accidentally.

Funeral services were held from Chestatee church Sunday at 10:30 o’clock, and interment was there.

Mr. Williams lived six miles from the city in the Fork district, and had been a traveling salesman for a number of years, traveling this territory for the Brunswick-Balke-Collander Co. He was 50 years of age, and had made a host of friends in this section who sincerely regretted to learn of his tragic death.

He is survived by his second wife and three sons, William, Clarence and Ralph Williams, of this county, and one daughter, Miss Irene Williams of Texas. One brother, H. T. Williams of California, also survives him.

Note: This is Oran B. Williams, son of Thomas J. Williams and grandson of John Graham Williams and Sarah Baker.
Sadie Richey is the daughter of Harvey Alonzo Richey and Nancy Isabelle Williams.

I'm related to the Updikes - who emigrated to Tompkins County, NY from NJ in 1810 along with Richey family groups. So I was photographing the cemetery at the Log Meetinghouse. The deteriorating headstones of Robert & Caty Richey got my sympathy. Nature is reclaiming them! Here's a link to a good survey (not by me) and a couple pics (by me).
http://nytompki.org/cemeteries/tcem062.htm

Enjoy, Bill Jones

Alex:
Is Ralph Karl RICHEY one of your relatives? He is my first cousin! I remember him well even though I was 16 before I even knew about him. His father, Norman Earl RICHEY, was my mother's half brother!
I remember them well! If you are a relative, I would love to correspond with you.
If not, maybe there is someone else out there who is a relative or remembers Karl. He was a wonderful person!
bpadgitt@comcast.net
Would love to hear from anyone who is/was a relative of Karl or his family.
Barbara

JIM: I am presently involved with the genealogy of a RICHEY family as a gift for a friend. The friend knows the name of his father..MARK DANIEL RITCHEY who left when he was a small child. As far as he can obtain information from his mother who was previously married to MARK DANIEL RITCHEY, she believes MARK's father was a DANIEL RITCHEY and mother HELEN CAREY d/o HARRY CAREY. Also the father of DANIEL may be LAWRENCE RITCHEY who was married to a HELEN ( ). My friends immediate family is situated in Berkely Co. WV but he was born in Virginia. Could you please check to see if you could get me started backwards. I don't usually have this much trouble in doing genealogy but I am "stuck". Thanks in advance.
Bill

Yes, I do apologize and should have given some dates. My friend was born in 1975 and therefore based on "generations" would speculate his father MARK DANIEL RITCHEY would be born about 1951 and his father LAWRENCE RITCHEY probably in the 1920's...thus, you can see, I cannot find any concrete dates. The RITCHEY family connects directly with the CATROW family in Berkeley County and I have found a wealth of information on that family. Thanks again for your attempt. Bill

Hellow board members,

I am looking for information on my gr-grandfather, Lorenzo Dow Richey. I know most of his descendents, but no documented information on his ancestry. There is undocumentaed information, but I'm not sure if its reliability. Let me know if anyone can help. I have some of his information below.

Thank you,
Tom Richey

Lorenzo Dow Richey

b. August 1858, St. Joseph, Missouri

m. Susie Garrett, September 28 1881, Center Township, Buchannan County, Missouri

d. abt. 1937?, Hillsboro, Oregon

1900 Census

Potter Township, Polk County, Arkansas

L.D. Ohio

LD Richey- Age 1

Lorenzo Dow Richey spent some time between 1900 and 1929 in Iowa and Kansas. He then showed up in Oregon in 1929 with his surviving children.

I believe I have located the father of Lorenzo Dow Richey as Thomas Richey, b. 1825 in Ohio, his father Samuel Richey. I have found several sources for these names, but they are all undocumented, so I hesitate to use them.
Bill, with the data you provided, I really do not know how to respond. I need some dates. If you have gotten back past 1930, the census records should be able to help you.
Birth/death records and obits can help. If you can provide additional info, I will see what I can find.
contact me at terealtor@aol.com

Regards,

Jim Richey
