Kim, I am a descendant of Charles Edward Rickard. My line:
Linda Potter Whitt> Lucy Ellen Taylor> Mary Bagwell Taylor>
Laura Rickard Bagwell. Laura Rickard Bagwell is my great grand mother. I noticed on her death certificate she list her mother's maiden name as Beer. How was this name spelled on her marriage certificate? Laura Rickard's line through the Burns>
Charles Edward and Susan Beher/Beer
David Rickard and Elizabeth Burns
Edward H. Burnes and Mary Jane Campbell>
Edward Burns, Sr. and Elizabeth Boon
Elizabeth Boon was the daughter of Jesse Boon and Kizah Bivens and the sister of Ratliff Boon, Gov. and congressman from Indiana.
I noticed that Charles Edward died very young leaving Susan with young children to care for. She did this by doing laundry for other people.
I hope that we can share information.
Linda Potter Whitt

Re: Rickard family info

I am a mining geologist who works extensively in Mexico. T.A. Rickard is one of my heroes and I was delighted recently to obtain a copy of his classic "Journeys of Observation". However, I was surprised to find the name Leontine Rickard Watts with an address in Berkeley in ink script and June Watts written in pencil. Leontine appears to be TA Rickard's daughter and I would guess this was her copy of the book, given to her by her father. Given how I love books, I cannot imagine parting with something written by a forebear, so perhaps this book wandered from the family library and needs to come home? I would be happy to sell it back for what I paid for it. If it was deliberately sold I would be interested to know if other TA Rickard books or files regarding Mexico or Colorado are for sale.

There is a Marriage Cert. in it for Absalom and Nancy Pickard and a Family Register for them. They had 7 children. Julia Ann, Mary Jane, Henry Harrison, Simeon Jefferson, Nancy Maria, Emma Adella, Ida Ansalia. This has their dates of birth, marriage and death. Also on the register there is a very nice picture of Absalom and Nancy. The earliest date on these papers is 1815. the Bible it self is dated 1869 If anyone is interested in it Please email me at msslaton4556@yahoo.com Thank you
Priscilla registered Susan's death in 1907. Can anyone tell me what happened to the family?
I have full details of Hezekiah's brother's Moses and William Bazaleel if it is of interest to any researcher.

Rickard: Jacob, Cynthia, Lorenzo Henry, Catharine, Decatur, Albert Jasper. Augusta, Helen, Lorenzo, Rudolpho

I posted this to the "Rickards" forum by mistake so my apologies for the duplication.

I have a Jacob Rickard, born in VT abt. 1793 to a Cynthia born in NY also abt. 1793. They had Lorenzo Henry Rickard born in either NY or Penn. He married Catherine DePue (her father was of French descent) born in Canada, and they had the following children: Decatur, Albert Jasper, Augusta, Helen (all born in Ohio), Rudolpho and Lorenzo (both born in Wisconsin). I believe the tale of Augusta, WI being named after "the prettiest little girl in town" was indeed true and named after this daughter Augusta. They lived in Oak Grove in 1855 a year before Augusta was named in 1856. It was said she was visiting from Oak Grove. There were other Rickards in Bridge Creek/Augusta who they may have been visiting.

The family later settled in MI. Pipestone, Berrien, first and then Hope, Barry, later. Albert Jasper married Amanda Smith in Carlton, Barry. Lorenzo and Rudolpho later lived with Albert's daughter Geneva Rickard Glockzin and her husband Lewis Glockzin in Pine Township, Montcalm in 1920. Geneva's sister Rosa is living with them also. Rosa was first married to Frank Sholes and then to Michael Kirsten. Albert and Amanda are both buried in Stanton, Montcalm as is Decatur. Lorenzo Rickard is buried in Brush Ridge Cemetery in Hope Township, Barry.

There were other Rickards in these townships - a John, Henry and Charles who I think might be relations. Lorenzo Henry and Catharine lived "next door" to Charles Rickard in 1880 in Hope Township. He was young enough to be a son or nephew to Lorenzo.

Re: Rickard family

I have come across some information about my ancestors and the Rickard name is among them with a long screed about various members from the 19th century. I am the great granddaughter of Annie Humphries and John Rees who I believe is somehow closely related to the Rickards. I am trying to work out exactly how at this point. I was born in England but live in the San Francisco area these days, and am tickled to find out about Reuben, Thomas and Edgar's involvement in Berkeley - which is just an hour from me, and that I may have relatives nearby! So in doing a Google search I came across your name and entry - it seems it is one of the latest entries, hence I am writing to you first in case you know anything about current Rickards in the San Francisco area. I have a lot of other information and a large family tree but it is incomplete especially lacking Rickard names, so it would be wonderful to be able to fill in some empty spaces. By the way my sister is named Leontine which I believe was also the name of Thomas Rickard's daughter.
Best wishes
Jo Darius
David

I am not in a position to help directly as it relates to the names you mentioned however Professor Philip Payton of Exeter University has written an excellent book on Cornish immigration but internally and overseas. It does give a very good insight into migration patterns of the Cornish. Importantly, with the tin mining decline in Cornwall, the skills of these miners were required around the world - hence the mass migration to USA, Australia and South Africa. There was also consideration internal migration to mining district with the UK. Although it is unlikely that you will find reference to your particular family it does provide an excellent insight into the economic and social problems faced by our families and why they may have moved.

regards
Peter Rickard
Melbourne Australia

Re: Origins

The origin of the Rickard name is according to my research Norweigan or Viking in origin. There are many variations and spellings of this name. Remember at the time of invading northern Germany and the coastal areas of Scotland and Ireland, there was a strong oral language but a poor or rudimentary written language. Hence the way in which the Anglo-Saxons heard the name meant one spelling and a slightly different spelling depending on the German tribe elsewhere - let us say further inland from Saxony. There is much conjecture as to whether it is an Anglo-Saxon name however in Cornwall where my family comes from the ancient Britons fought to prevent a takeover by the Anglo-Saxons ensuring that the Viking presence from ireland, Wales and Scotland remained largely untouched.

This is a very brief summary of my work and would welcome comments from those interested in this matter.

regards
Peter Rickard
Melbourne Australia

Good Afternoon Stan

Most of the individuals mentioned in your message are on my family tree. I do not have the records with me at present but if memory serves me correct Ellen, Cecil and Ena were brother and sisters. I received an email from a Sohia Bellars from I think Devon last year. She was a descendant of Ena. Unfortunately I lost contact with her but will check my records on the others mentioned. Where do you fit into the picture.

Regards
Peter Rickard
Melbourne Australia

Hello Craig

Thank you for responding. I have managed to take the Rickard tree back to a marriage in 1691 in Devon. Slowly but surely I am creeping backwards. I am also trying to lin as many branches as possible for family members living in and around St. Columb Minor.

Thomas Pascoe Rickard and his descendants caused some interesting moments as they kept interchanging names with each new generation. I have found three "Enoders" which I now believe could be grandfather, father and son but still need time to confirm links.

I am based in Melbourne Australia and have a near complete record of the descendants here. I am now trying to track family members who stayed on in Cornwall. I also have one link into the USA where I have been able to pick up some details from there.

Given that official record keeping commenced in the british isles around 1540, I have set myself a task of trying to find where the family name came from and when. This is an extraordinary task and about as interesting as an Agatha Christie mystery.

How is your research proceeding? yes I would be interested in seeing where you have gone with your searching. My direct email address is peter.rickard8@bigpond.com is you want to correspond direct.

Regards and best Wishes
Peter Rickard
Melbourne Australia

For the past 15 years I have just about turned every stones in Scotland, Wales Ieland and Cornwall look for a marriage about 1690-2 for a John Rickard (then spelt Richards) and a Dorothy (surname unknown). By accident I have found one at Barnstaple in Devon.

Children of my John and Dorothy were christend at St. Columb Minor in Cornwall commencing 1693. Although I am fairly certain that I have found the right marriage I was just wondering if anyone has these individuals on their family tree and would like to communicate with me.

Regards
Peter Rickard
Melbourne Australia

I know this message is really old now, but thought I'd see if anyone was still around.
My name is Oliver Rickard, and I am also a descendant of Capt. James Rickard through Thomas, then Thomas Arthur, then John Forbes, then my father, Paul Patrick Rickard. Our family tree ends with Captain James, and we were hoping to get some information on him and his family.
Also, it appears that my great grandfather, Thomas Arthur (TA) Rickard married a woman named Marguerite Lydia Rickard (maiden name). Might any of you know that name?
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Oliver

William Conrad Rickard (b. 1785, Hagerstown, MD, d. 1870, Latrobe, PA) was married to Sarah Strauss (b. 1795, Reading, PA, d. Abt. 1891, Latrobe, PA). According to my records, they are both buried in Stone Church Cemetery, Latrobe, PA. Somewhere I found William C. Rickard's father's name as Jacob, but I don't have confirmation on that. Sarah Strauss was the daughter of David Strauss and Elizabeth Weiss. No sibling names are known for either William or Sarah.

Julia Ann, Mary Jane, Henry Harrison, Simeon Jefferson, Nancy Maria, Emma Adella, Ida Ansalia. This has their dates of birth, marriage and death.

I have come to a dead end trying to trace Harriet's home, birth place & parents back to Cornwall. She married James (shown Jas) Purcell at Stepney, St Dunstans in 1825. Marriot's on line marriage record only shows the names but no details of any witnesses. I cannot find how to get a copy of the full entry, which may give a father's name. James died in 1838 (c35)in the workhouse at St Albans, Harriet lived on with daughters until dying herself, in the same workhouse in 1882 (c73). Their Daughter, Emily b 1838 in St Albans, married Samuel Henry Varney (my great grand parents). Anyone help with Harriet's early years or the certificate, please?
many thanks

I am looking for any ancestors or desendants to Maude Rickard who would have been my gramdmothers biological mother. Maude was probably born in the late 1800's and could have lived in Pennsylvania. She put my grandmother in a Pittsburg orphanage apparently because my gramdmother was the 13th child and they could not care for her. My grandmother was born as Mable Rickard on Sept. 17,1921 I believe in Harrisburg, PA. Could any of your relatives be siblings, or children of Maude?
