Hi Patt,

There was a Sandy Duke in Orange NC...not sure yet which were his parents:

Orange NC May 1823 – the state vs. Sandy Duke – defendant guilty as charged in bill of indictment

Some of the Cate(s) family in Orange NC went to TN near where the Carrington - Ashley - Duke families went. Robert Cates was bondsman in 1816 Orange for my ancestor John E. Carrington and first wife Jenny Smith. The Cates intermarried with Ashley and Rhue in-laws and connect with Carrington and Duke families in various ways.

I noticed some other surnames in your family tree (Darnell, Chastain, Parker):

Thomas A. Carrington married Nancy Darnell in 1849 Carroll TN.

Catherine Carson and Virginia Jane Carson married Elijah Chastain and James Lafayette Chastain 1817-1819 Haywood NC.

Esther Jane Carson married Samuel J. Parker 1864 Jackson NC.

My family tree is on Rootsweb titled Carson-Nunn. It has most of the Orange NC families included.

Gary

We appreciate the land info. Its adds to our NC Ricketts notes. We think this Reason Ricketts sold his land and moved to Anson County NC.

Do you know anything about Sandy Duke? He is found in Maury County in 1840. He married Susan Cate. The Cate family is connected to the Ricketts in Maury County.

Sarah Cates brother William married Polly Bowers in Orange County. After William's death Polly "Mary" married William Ricketts (as his 3rd wife)

Patt

I wish I knew how!

It is interesting you have had you've had your DNA tested as we are part of the Ricketts DNA project that was recently started.

We do have other Ricketts info, but the web site shows ones we've connected to.

Patt

Hi again Jack,

I just noticed in my notes this Reason Richets/Ricketts name connected to a an entry adjacent to John Duke in Orange NC.
Hi Jack,

I have Hardeman Duke marrying Elizabeth Ricketts 01 Jan 1794 Orange NC.....can't recall where that date originated. It was possibly from a Duke researcher.

As you mentioned, Hardeman Duke received a pension in Orange NC until he died there in 1839. The pension records of Nashville TN list Elizabeth Duke, widow of Hardeman Duke, private. She is shown to receive a half yearly allowance $40, commences 19 Oct 1839, then on the table it lists March and Sept each year, and for her it shows a 1 mark starting March 1840 and continuing through Sept 1848 where there is a 2 (apparently when she died). In hindsight, I don't know that Elizabeth Ricketts Duke was actually living in Nashville during that period as that was a pension record for Nashville TN. I can send a JPG of that pension list if you'd like me to (need your email).

It seems that Elizabeth Ricketts may be related to Nancy Ricketts who married Berry Duke in Maury TN. I hadn't started researching Ricketts until recently, after finding the Duke connection.

As I mentioned, my ancestor Polly Ashley born 1800 (married John E. Carrington 1818 Orange NC) was actually a Duke biologically, based on the YDNA of descendants of her brother Squire Stagg Ashley born 1806. The YDNA match is with the Duke line that in Orange/Durham NC of which Hardeman was a sibling. Court records show that several Duke males fathered children out of wedlock in Orange NC 1800-1820 though I've not found Polly and Squire listed as children of an of these Dukes. Squire Ashley married Elizabeth Kutch in 25 Feb 1826 in Maury Co TN....so it seems there was some type of Maury TN Connection for them as well as the Rickets and Dukes with which they seem to connect.

I'll keep an eye open for Ricketts families back in NC. I was thinking that the Maury TN location might be a hint as to their Duke connection. There were so many Duke connections back in Orange NC, I can't sort them out.

Gary

Gary,

I wish we could tell you more about the family. We hadn't been able to find Elizabeth and Hardeman's marriage in Orange County. Although we have looked!

We are interested in all the early Ricketts of Maury & Lewis County TN as we think they must be related somehow.

Where did you find Elizabeth in Nashville? According to "Maury County History & Families"

"Berry was the child of Hardeman and Elizabeth (Ricketts) Duke. Hardeman (b. 1760 in North Carolina) died in Orange County in 1839, Elizabeth (b. 1767 in North Carolina) died in Lewis County, TN before 1849"

A Hardiman Duke was on a road crew in Orange County, NC in Feb 1797.

A Hardeman Duke was a NC Pensioner from 1831-1848. This might be him if Elizabeth got the pension after his death.

There is a Hardeman Duke in the 1800 census at Hillsborough NC in 1800. The age is a bit old for him. And there is a Hardeman Duke in the 1820 at Laurens County, SC. The age is too young for him.

I'm afraid that's about all we know.

Any additional info you have would be appreciated! Thanks for posting.

We'll let you know if we come across anything further.

Jack Ricketts

Jack,
I'm researching the Duke - Ricketts families in Orange NC. Hardeman Duke born 1760s died 1839 married Elizabeth Ricketts 1794 Orange NC. A son, Berry Duke, married Nancy Rickets 1818 in Maury TN. Elizabeth moved to Davidson/Nashville TN 1839 after Hardeman died. I'm trying to determine how they connect to families in TN.

Any hints on why Elizabeth might have moved to Nashville?

Gary
gkcarson@aol.com

Marion died in 1897.
John must have been alive until at least 1896, if his son was born in that year.
I have Shadrach's parents as William (1766) & Lucinda Nash (1774).
I didn't think about a railway porter. So all in all, it would be helpful if you could let me have your info. Thanks a lot. Madeleine Berks

No problem!

Percy William Ricketts was born in Coclester in 1892; son of Harry Thomas Ricketts and Jane Letitia Wenden. Harry was in the army (11 Hussars) until ~1889 and died in 1905. Jane's family came from Lexden in Essex.

Harry's father was Henry Ricketts, who was born in Gloucestershire (possibly Somerford Keynes but I don't have concrete evidence yet) and was a warehouseman and porter at various stages according to birth/death certificates from his children. For some reason he and his wife (Lucy Featherstone) spent part of the 1840s in France, where Harry was born.

Percy married Elsie Girvan in 1919 but died in 1920. Shortly after his death his son, Edgar AW Ricketts, was born but I have yet to establish what happened to him. He could even still be alive.

Edward Ricketts

I am posting an Update on Edward Ricketts. I have been lookimg for Edward Ricketts and his Mother Ada for some time. Ada is my husband's grandfather's second wife, and she shot and killed him in 1914 in St Louis, MO, and I wondered where she came from, and what happened to her.

1. Newspaper clips from the Indianapolis Star indicated she had lived in Madison, IN. Some emails there indicated she had, but it was not where she started from. It is a lovely old town on the Ohio river

2. I pulled her marriage certifcate to my husband's Grandfather in Jeffersonville, IN (before the fire). It Indicated she was Ada Brown, and that she had come from the Sugar Branch area in Switzerland, Co. Vevay is the county seat. (Another beautiful area on the Ohio river, and Stayed in Rising Sun on the river in a B & B, it was lovely)

3. I could see them before and after the shooting in the 1910 and 1920 census in St Louis, MO where the event took place. (By the way she was tried for this, and there was a hung jury. She had shot him in the back).

4. The big break through was finding the WWII military record for Edward Ricketts. I could find neither in the 1930 or 1900 census, but found her with the Brown family in Switzerland Co in 1880. Although I saw an Edward Ricketts across the river from St Louis, but his birth was a little off, he was a little older. , but he was born in Vevay, IN. I had not checked WWII records before, as I thought him too old. However, there he is, and his mother had remarried which I suspected, and she is now Ada Smart. I guess it was Smart as this was her 4th marriage and it stuck. This brith date matches the older one I had seen that died across from St Louis.

5. It also told me his middle name was Vrlie or Urlie (they wrote it V he signed it U). So I searched for a V and Urlie Ricketts in the 1900 census. He and his Mother Ada Ricketts are across the River from the Vevay area in Carroll, KY. His father, John is living across the River in Switzerland Co, IN with a lady with the last name Brown, and she shows John as her brother. I think he died shortly after that. Bingo, this shows birth year and month, and it matches the man who died across from St Louis, so now I know that the years shown in the 1910 and 1920 census were probably wrong and this is my person. There are too many pluses not to be.

6. Then I started looking for Ada Smart. Could not find a death record, but found on Ancestry, newspapers from the area Across the river from St Louis, a bunch of property transfers, and a notice that her son, Edward Ricketts was appointed head of her estate.

7. A call to probate and all three wills were obtained (her's her husbands and Edwards). I knew when he died but not where (SS gave month year, no date, and not location for death benefits). Turns out he died across the river in St Louis. It also shows that they are from the Vevay Area of IN.

Edward is shown with a Wife Mae in the 1930 census. But according to the records I have, they never married, and she inherited everything he had, which was a pretty nice sum, not rich but OK. She ran Mae's Tavern in town, and I think she had a husband, and she never divorced him. She was listed as his special friend in the obit. I guess his mother married enough for both of them.

He had no issues, so he is the end of the Ricketts line. I knew his father's name, John but have not pursued the name farther back. However, if you have a data base on the Ricketts, I wanted to fill out this portion.

If you need more information, contact me.

Does anyone have a John Ricketts in their file from Indiana, Switzerland, Ohio Co area? He died young I think before 1900. They had one son.

I have traced my elusive Ada (Brown) Ricketts/Schneider/Owsley to this area East of Jeffersonville, IN. John Ricketts was her first husband, and the only one I think she had any children with.

Unfortunately, I have and found nothing. I think when I looked at the 1920 census it did not indicate he had servied in the War. It would have been nice if he had. He was living with her in 1920 also, Both of the Census (10 and 20)in St Louis. I found an Edward married to a May in the 1930 census across the state line, but north of St Louis, hiS age a little off. But as I remember when I further investigated that Edward it turned out not to be him. Darn. As we know the death certificate should give Mother's name also.

Rising Sun is right in the area I am looking at. These Browns were in Switzerland Co, but right up near the border of the Co, West of Rising Sun. Ada (Brown) had one child, Edward Ricketts, and John Ricketts was supposedly his father. Ada (Brown)Schneider Owsley married my husband great grandfather, and shot him to death in St Louis in the early 1900s. In an Indianapolis newspaper it says that she was married to John Ricketts first, by which she had Edward (1896 appromixately), then she married Schneider whom she divorced, and the Ben Owsley. I see her in St Louis with census in 1910 living with Ben Owsley (spelled Ousley), and her son Edward Ricketts, then in St Louis again in 1920 after the killing. I lose track of them after that. I was trying to find her family, which I have, and her marriage information in Jeffersonville tells me that she came from this area. Do you know when he died.

I might be in a cemetery book there, which is not online. I don't live there, and trying to piece this together has been an inch at a time. I tried to find obits on Ada's parents, but rising sun library found very little. I can tell when her one brother died, but cannot find the other's death. I keep thinking if I could find an obit on at least that one brother, it might say something about her, like if she married again. If I had that I might find out what happened to Edward. There are a number of Edward Ricketts I keep looking at, but I cannot prove a connect to Ada.

I am trying to find any information on Sarah "Sallie Weatherford, d/o Abel W Weatherford (b:1782 Chatham, Pittsylvania, VA, d:1840 Kentucky. He was married to Mary or Polly Shannon, and was the son of John W Weatherford and Hannah Overstreet. Sarah was born around 1806 in Kentucky. I believe that Sarah was born in Lincoln Co., KY, but can't prove it. She married D. C. Ricketts. I don't have any birth, marriage or death dates. One source on rootsweb has her marriage to D. C. Ricketts as 13 Feb 1832 in Washington Co., KY. Thank you to anyone who might have some info.
