Wayne Thomas,

I have the same quandry that you had in your post of 1999. Was John or Lemuel the father of Micajah Riddick. Our family info shows Lemuel, many genealogists show John.

Did you ever resolve this question?

Much appreciated,
Martin

In the 2-11-1920 Census for Pleasant Grove, Norfolk County, VA, Cecil's wife is Mary E. born 1888 in VA. Children listed are Sarah F. age 10, Cecil age 11, and Evelyn age 7.
I suppose Sarah F. is Sarah Florence. What about Evelyn? I find no listing for a J. Do you have information on Joseph Riddick. I found a J. Joseph Riddick died 1-6-1908 in Norfolk County, VA. Do you know the name of the cemetery in Gates County, NC that Joseph and Florence Virginia Wilson Riddick are buried? Do you know their birth dates and death dates? Parents of Joseph Riddick ???.

The lands of Micajah Riddick in Gates County were on Middle Swamp, near Bennett's Creek, now known as Duke Swamp. The source for land records, as well as many slave records, is the Gates County Deed Books. Deed Book 2, pp. 11-12 shows a land grant to Micajah Riddick of 63 acres, on the west side of Middle Swamp, dated 20 July 1788, Reg. 15 July 1789.
Deed Book 2, pp. 169-170, shows a deed of gift from William Powell to Micajah Riddick, Jr., his friend and "kinsman," for 200 acres, tools, household and kitchen furniture, plus slaves named Sam, Jacob, Peter, Charles, Jeffrey and Betty, dated 16 August 1790. Gates County Estates records for Riddick family members will also provide some slave records. LDS has filmed these records.

Hi Scott! I am Geneen Johnson, the African-American Riddick descendant that originally posted this last will and testament of Micajah Riddick. I am descended from Micajah through his son, David Riddick to whom he left his plantation. The lands where this plantation once stood was owned by Smithfield Foods in Gates County, North Carolina back in 2000 when I first located the Riddick cemetery there. Since Smithfield is closing one of its plants in Smithfield, Virginia later on this year and its been 9 years since I last visited Gates County, I cannot be sure this land is still in the hands of Smithfield Foods. In old deeds and wills of the Riddicks I descend from, the land is referred to as the old David Riddick Place or next to the Wiley Riddick Plantation; the name seems to have changed as the land was devised to successive generations of male offspring throughout the years. The area of Gates County where this land is located is called Middle Swamp.

James Riddick (Born in England in 1630) married Mary Shepherd of Surry Co. Virginia. Mary was the daughter of Robert Shepherd, Burgess of James City, Virginia. James and Mary had a son also named James Riddick who married a Laura Mills. James and Mary had a son named Lemuel Riddick who served in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the mid 1700's. Lemuel married a woman with a surname of Perry. Lemuel and "Miss Perry" had a son named John Riddick. This John Riddick was Micajah's father. John was married to his second cousin, Jean Riddick. Together they lived at White Marsh, which was in Nansemond County Virginia, now Suffolk, Virginia. Micajah married Ruth Parker and their sons, Robert Moore and David is where you and I are connected. David Riddick is my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather, which makes you and I very distant cousins. I gathered the above Riddick family genealogy from posts from a Wayne Thomas and a book called "England to Virginia: Pioneers of the South" by June Runyan Riddick. Of course everything after Micajah's will I had to piece together on my own since I was in high school. North Carolina is one of the few states that have allowed old records to remain in the individual county clerk's offices, so since I used to live in Suffolk, which is right over the state line in Virginia from Gates County, driving down to look up something wasn't a problem. According to my family history, my closest Riddick relative was my Great-great grandfather, Thomas W Riddick (1858-1930). Feel free to email me directly at forneen@verizon.net if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Geneen N Johnson, Esq.
Hi William! I am the one that originally posted this will on this Riddick site. I am African-American and a descendant of the Riddicks (Thomas W Riddick 1858-1930) through my great-grandmother, Sarah Johnson, a servant of the Riddick family. I have been looking into this branch since I was 15, living in Buffalo, NY. My Riddicks came from the Middle Swamp and Drumhill area of Gates County North Carolina. You are absolutely correct that African-Americans made a tremendous contribution to the Riddick family and therefore, to their wealth. You can see from the bequeaths of slaves in this will, that they were very much a " Southern slave holding family." I suggest that you visit the Gates County Courthouse in Gatesville, NC and try looking through the birth and death registers. You may happen along information about other relatives from those sources. Certificates will list names of mothers and fathers, which will at least provide you with one more name to go back one generation further. Also, check the "black marriage register". This is also good for determining parentage and also the names of other family members and church associations. I think the Clerk's office has records documenting Black marriages from 1866 forward; anything prior to 1866 is not documented since Blacks were still slaves prior to 1865. If you know which white Riddick family owned your ancestors, you may be able to go further by locating wills of those slaveowners, which will give you a great deal of information on the names of their slaves and who they were bequeathed too upon the master's death (trust me there were hundreds in Gates County and narrowing it down without any oral family history may not be easy). There are also the federal census records that have been released up to 1930. From what I know, the Riddicks came to Virginia in 1630 and remained in the Tidewater region of Southeastern Virginia for decades. They acquired lands down in the Northeastern tip of North Carolina probably beginning in the late 1600-1750's and branched out all over North Carolina from there. I descend from John and Jean Riddick of White Marsh, Nansemond County Virginia which was right over the state line from Gates County. I spend my summers with my grandparents in Suffolk, Virginia and that is when I was told that the picture of the fair skinned man who looked Italian was really my great-grandfather, Harrison, a bi-racial man who was the son of a Riddick. You may email me directly at forneen@verizon.net if you would like to correspond on Riddick family research. It would be nice to arrange a Riddick Family Reunion in Gates where White and Black could meet and share information.

Hi Williams,

I'm a (white) descendant of Micajah, through his son Robert Moore Riddick. I've been researching my family tree for some time now, but haven't come across any info as to what plantation(s) the family may have owned, or where they might be located. I'd be all ears to hear if you've found anything like that.

I've seen the 1804 will of Micajah before, and was actually a bit disturbed to realize that my ancestors were directly involved in such a dark chapter of history. While it certainly doesn't mean the Riddick slaveowners were cruel people, it does give a chill to read such lines as "one negro boy Ben and one girl Letty and their increase to him and his heirs assigns forever." Heady stuff.

I unfortunately don't have any info, or experience, in researching slave records, but would be interested in anything you've found. I agree that while we may only be bound by a name, we're still in essence, family.

Regards,

Scott Riddick
Hello,
I'm Williams James Riddick- a 46 year old black male born in Elizabeth City N.C. on July 11th 1962. My mother is Annette Riddick (maiden name) and her Father- My Grandpa was named Clarence Riddick. He was born in Sunberry, N.C. I'll fore go the whole run down, you get the point.
I'm writing tonight because I find the thought of learning more of My ancestry very exciting. I had actually found this will and testament earlier tonight on another site- I'll send the link to all interested. So far, I've read as far back as Capt. James Riddick. And, eventhough, My ancestor were given the Riddick name as slaves; that Riddick Mansion\Plantation in Va. holds just as mush history for Me and My family then anyone else. I mean, I moved with My mother and stepfather to upstate NY in 1965 or 66 but I still feel a strong connection to that place. I'm absolutely sure that men and women of My bloodline sweat, bled, cried and prayed to aid "Master Riddick" (and all that came after him) in achieving what must have seemed like paradise in its finest days. I'm told that an old slave graveyard is located right on the premisses. Eventhough, they- My ancestors were left with nonthing but a name. A name symbolizing and meaning bravery (and something to do with the patch on a Robin's breast). I wonder how many of My ancestors worked themselves so hard that they dreamed of the rest, peace and freedom that only that place could have gave them at the time. Excuse Me, the anger of what My ancestors must have gone through sort of got to Me on that last line. The point is, I'm proud of them. I can only imagine the faith in God, the high pain threshold- mental and physical and the steadfast determination to survive those times they must have possessed. But for them, there would be no Me; or, you. Regardless of which side of the Riddick ancestory line one stands, We all hold hands. Connected by just a name (some may say) but I know its mush more than that. Its American History and we are locked in it for all times. A member of My family was mentioned in Micajah's Last Will and Testament. Maybe, someone out there can help Me put together which slave (s) they were. Or maybe, you could let Me know where- which apart of Africa the slaves where captured in. I'm all ears.

PS

I was born a "Williams James Riddick" and all My school records have Me as "James Williams Riddick. To make things worse, My S.S. Card came under My stepfathers last name (Green). I know it sounds crazy, but on top of all of that the N.C. Department of Vital Statisics can not locate My birth certificate Ive sent away for it many times over the years.. I would love to hear from anyone that could assist Me in this matter.

My name is James Lee Riddick and have a lot of information on the Riddick/Reddick lines. My direct lineage is from the Riddick's that resided in the Suffolk, VA area going back to the American Revolution and beyond. I would love to help in determining the Father of your husband. I have in my data base a William Henry Riddick who was born 1-20-1926 in Hamlet, Richmond County, NC. I would like to obtain a little more information on your husband's family. Please contact me directly at riddick11@verizon.net

Riddick, Reddick, Redick Information

I am looking for information on a Henry Reddick or Riddick born around 1776 (if the 1850 Census is correct). Henry married Jerusha Skinner in 1819 in Chowan County NC. They had two children before moving to Ohio, where they had a third child Seth Thomas Reddick.

I believe that Henry had at least one other marriage, possibly two. One to a Sara Burk in Mar 1807 and one to a Sarah Topping in Nov 1800. I could be wrong with these other marriages, but it would explain the marriage bonds and weddings as well as the 1920 census numbers.

I was wondering if anyone could tie Henry with a father and mother in the area? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

I am a Hollowell researcher, but I do not find a Sarah Hollowell married to Charles Riddick. I have a Sarah (Sally) Hollowell born about 1799 to Joel and Rachel Forehand Hollowell who married Robert Riddick 8 Feb 1813 in Perquimans Co., NC. Also, a Sarah Hollowell born about 1754 in Perquimans Co., NC, daughter of John and Christian Stallings Hollowell, who married Jacob Riddick about 1775. Some people say she was married to Christopher Riddick, but the following deed disputes this claim. "27 Jul 1785. Jacob & Sarah Riddick for 100 lbs paid by John White, both of Perquimans, sold 150a, on North Side of Perquimans River, adjacent Isaac Wilson, which Robert Riddick bought of Stephen Thomas, formerly Joseph Jessops. Test: Phillip Perry, Benjamin Perry, Jr. (Deed Book I, 481, History of Perquimans Co., NC, Winslow, p. 280)."

I am very interested in hearing who the parents of this Sarah Hollowell might be if known.
We have the same variant spellings of Hollowell too. It is often confused with Holloway (a totally different line). When checking records in a particular area, I try to check all variant spellings because I have found many that were incorrectly spelled, especially when I couldn't find them from one census to another.

I found in the 10-3-1850 Federal Census for Madison County, TN the following: Mills G. Riddick born about 1820 in NC and his wife Candis A. born about 1825 in NC. They had two children: Martha A. Elizabeth Riddick born 1842 in TN and James Alexander Riddick born 1844 in TN. This family appears in the 6-6-1860 Federal Census for Washington County, TX. In 1860 the surname is listed as Reddick. Mills G. Reddick appears in the 6-25-1870 Federal Census for Brenham, Washington County, TX as a widower and saloon keeper. Mills G. and his wife do not appear in any NC records such as births or marriages. Can anyone help me with this family?

Drayton H. Riddick, born 10-6-1890 in Noble, Sabine Parish, LA, died 2-21-1947 in Shreveport LA and Vera Vesta Coplen born 4-5-1895 in Benton, DeSoto Parish LA dies 11-6-1980 in Shrevepost LA were parents of Charles Eddie Riddick, born 1-18-36 Benton LA, died 1-16-1992 Anchorage AK. Chas E. Riddick had 3 children by his first wife Wanda Harris and one by his second wife Janice Roberts. Drayton Riddick was a son of Lamartine Riddick, born 12-22-1851 Gates County NC, died 12-29-1890 in Noble, Sabine Parish LA. Lamartine moved to Sabine Parish LA as a young man. His ancestry is documented on RootsWeb. Lamartine was a great grandson of Christopher Riddick, born 1750 in Nansemond County VA, but who lived most of his life in the adjacent Gates County NC. Christopher's wife was Sarah Riddick (Sally) daughter of Capt Joseph Riddick and granddaughter of Lemuel Riddick, sometime clergyman and member of the Virginia House of Burgesses representing Nansemond County in Colonial Virginia. Lamartine Riddick's father and grandfather were also named Lemuel Riddick. Suggest you access data on Drayton or Lamartine on RootsWeb and trace backwards, or forwards, although there will be limited information on descendents who are presumed to be still living. Happy hunting.

Frank A. Riddick Jr MD

my husband Benjamin Franklin Riddick met his father at age of 8 and can not remember him. His father birthday according to my husband birth certificate is 1924. And when my husband was born he was 29 and worked at the Naval Station in Norfolk Virginia. His mom birthday was 1933. And she had one other son name William Riddick So as you can see we have no other relatives to turn to for help. I believe he is here in Virginia, and all the Riddicks here are related to him somehow. But most say they don't know my husband, which I think was from a second family. His mother name was Florence Elisabeth Tharpe. My husband live on Mahone Ave in Norfolk Virginia.

Hello. In 2006, I purchased the old Lassiter Riddick home located in Gates County. I am researching the family and property in order to restore the plantation as much as possible to it's original condition. I would very much like to find any information you may have regarding the family and the family's property. From a bit of research already conducted, I understand that Micajah was possibly the grandfather of Lassiter Riddick.

Glad to hear you made it through Katrina. I have a photocopy of a book by William T. Cross provided to me by Dee (Anna) Croft -- a distant cousin. I'll have to dig that out of my files and reread it. I also have Pioneers of the South, and it provides a good history moving back into the early 1700s and 1600s.

Another good series is Cavaliers and Pioneers with plenty of material transcribed from colonial records -- these are mostly my other lines like Tatum.

Thanks for the info. I have some pages from what we believe to be Solon Riddick's family Bible with entries for the births of Lemuel Riddick's children in North Carolina beginning with P.H. Riddick, first son and Lamartine, their second son. It is just scraps of the pages, and not all is legible, but I can send copies to you if you wish. Appears to be secondary source, maybe Solon writing down what they could remember for the future generations. My father got it from his sister, who must have inherited it as the oldest surviving child of Drayton Riddick.

Hi Frank,

It's been a long time since we corresponded. I haven't been checking the Boards for a long time, but I saw your response re: Charles Riddick. Charles was my uncle. I was very interested in your lineage for Christopher Riddick of Gates County. I have never been able to get past Christopher to confidently determine his spouse and his parents. I have his spouse as either Sarah Hollowell or Sarah Riddick. I've not been able to determine which was his wife -- maybe he was married twice. However, that still leaves open the lineage for Charles.

I'd be very interested in learning the source for determining that Sarah Riddick was his wife and, thus in the line of Charles Riddick.

- Christopher J.
Naturally, there were two Lassiter Riddick's. The elder of the two was dead by 1810 and the younger, a son of Edward Riddick, died ca. 1872. A search of the Gates County Deed Books' Cross Index should help distinguish between their land holdings. The published Court Minutes can be found in the library and the Wills may be there also. Estates records on microfilm are available to you, as a NC resident, on interlibrary loan from the State Library. They are a real treasure trove of information on the Riddick families. Good luck in your search.

Most questions aren't this easy to answer. :) There are pictures of the various outbuildings on the Lassiter Riddick farm on pp. 16 and 100-101, of the book Forgotten Gates The Historical Architecture of a Rural North Carolina County, by Thomas R. Butchko. It was published by The Gates County Historical Society in 1991 and should be found in the library. If the buildings are no longer standing, a search with a metal-detector may help locate them. Your farm is from Lassiter Riddick the younger, who was son of Edward

Hi,

OK, it was just an honest attempt to confirm something that I've suspected.

Oh, I entered one error into my account. Jacob Reddick of Burke and Screven Counties, GA was the -brother- (not the son) of my gggg-grandfather Nicholas Reddick.

The variability in the recording of r320 surnames is a maddening thing! Was the surname spelling Riddick or Reddick for the r320s of Virginia and adjacent portions of North Carolina? In my bunch we find spellings of Radick, Raddick, Readick, Readdick, Redick, Reddick, Rettig, Rettige, and I won't even mention the spelling variants that introduce a 'w' into the mix!

Well, the DNA testing program that we've been pursuing is beginning to separate out some of the lines. Of course, we now have three different genetic lines containing Riddicks and one of those particular lines also contains Ruddocks, while other Ruddocks match with Ruddicks who aren't genetically related to any Riddicks or Reddicks.

Dale
Hi,

Could this Jacob Riddick of Perquimans County (who married Sarah Hollowell circa 1775 and was involved in that 1785 deed dispute) have been the Jacob 'Reddick' of the 1790 federal census of Perquimans County?

I ask because in the past that Jacob Reddick of Perquimans County was confused with Jacob Reddick of Burke County, Georgia. This GA Jacob Reddick was the son of my gggg-grandfather Nicholas Reddick. Jacob appeared in multiple court cases and deeds during the 1780s & '90s in Burke and Screven Counties, along Brier Creek (a large riverine tributary of the Savannah River) near Paris' Mill (modern Millhaven), approximately halfway between Savannah and Augusta.

It would simply be nice to be able to identify that Jacob Riddick of 1775 & '85 Perquimans County as the same fellow as Jacob 'Reddick' from the 1790 federal census of Perquimans County.

Sincerely,

Dale E. Reddick

Another, new result from Reddick / r320 DNA testing.

Hi Folks,

We got the first results of DNA testing for a new member of our DNA testing program earlier today.

He is J. L. Reddick, whose great-grandfather settled near Pierre, South Dakota in the late 1800s. His grandfather was born there soon after. Later, his grandfather lived in the Denver, Colorado area.

12 Marker Analysis - Comparisons for J. L. Reddick

Kit - - - - - Name - - - - - Genetic Distance
23515 - - J. R. Reddick - - - - 0
28201 - - R. R. Reddick - - - - 0
55124 - - J. C. Riddick - - - - 0

----------

25 Marker Analysis - Comparisons for J. L. Reddick

Kit - - - - - Name - - - - - Genetic Distance
28201 - - R. R. Reddick - - - - 1

So, this means that J. L. Reddick is part of the third largest set of participants we've found, who form a separate lineage of their own. Thus, he is not part of either the Scots-Irish r320s or the Georgia r320s.

J. L. Reddick's results provide us with additional evidence of a SECOND lineage that shares both the REDDICK and the RIDDICK surname spellings.

R. R. Reddick of this group has the best known & recorded genealogy (to the best of my knowledge).

I hope that these new testing results are of some assistance to someone.

Sincerely,

Dale E. Reddick

First result of DNA testing for Ruddock - he matches with some Riddicks.
Hi Folks,

Yesterday we received the results of a DNA test for a Ruddock from County Down in Ireland (N.I.). Unfortunately, this Ruddock does not match to our previously tested Ruddick participant.

Instead, his results match with those of a much larger group of Scots-Irish r320s having the surnames Reddick, Redick, Riddick, and Wallace (his grandfather was born a Riddick, but that man changed his surname).

You can see our testing results at this webpage:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Reddick-r320/index.aspx?...

Scroll down to the fifth group - Scots-Irish. The new result for the Ruddock participant is #20, or the second member of the Scots-Irish group.

Dale E. Reddick
Riddick DNA testing project at Relative Genetics.

Hi Folks,

I seem to be unable to contact the project coordinator for the Riddick DNA project hosted by the testing company Relative Genetics.

The project coordinator is Jesse Riddick. Does anyone know him and / or have his e-mail address? I have been unable to contact him.

The Riddick project at Relative Genetics appears to have three members. Given that there are several Riddicks in the Reddick / r320 project hosted by Family Tree DNA, then it would be desirable for us to be able to compare the results of the two projects.

Dale E.
Hi Chris- After Hurricane Katrina we moved toa high rise condo and all my source materials on geneaology are in storage. As best as I can remember, my listing of Sarah (Sally) Riddick as Christopher Riddick's wife comes from my cousin Ruth Armstrong Ross, who wrote 1986 a book on our branch of the Riddicks, from her correspondence in the 1950s qnd 60s with Edwin Bowles of Gates County NC who was a descendent of the Riddicks who stayed in NC rather than emigrating to Mississippi as did my forebears or to Louisiana, as did yours. one of them or perhaps both cite materials collected and collated in the 1930s and 1940s bu one William T. Cross, long time Registrar of Gates County NC and also a Riddick descendent. The one thing not in storage is my copy of Pioneers of the South published in the 1990s by June Runyan Riddick of Little Rock Arkansas, whose data generally agrees with mine and augments it considerable. June lists Sarah Hollowell as Christopher Riddick's first wife and the mother of a daughter, Mary, she lists Sarah Riddick, daughter of James Riddick, as Christopher Riddick's second wife and the mother of sons William Wright, Mills, Henry (from whom I am descended) and Lemuel (grandfather of Lamartine Riddick, who is your ancestor). My data show that Sarah Riddick was the daughter of Capt Joseph Riddick rather than his brother James Riddick. Whichever is correct and I see no way to find out after nearly 300 years, Sarah was the granddaughter of Lemuel Riddick of Nansemond County Virginia and a man of local importance in Colonial Virginia.

Frank Riddick
