In 1846 or 47 at the age of 3 or 4, William Nelson Riddle moved to Texas from his home near Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee. He traveled with his family and a large group of Riddles and other families from Kentucky and Tennessee. These families traveled down the Cumberland, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers and up the Red River on flatboats which they had built themselves.
At Shreveport,Louisiana, they embarked on wagons and traveled the rest of the way into Titus County in east Texas.
They established farms in and around Titus County. William moved to Rock Creek in Johnson County with his father between 1853 and 1860 after the death of his mother in March, 1853.
Just before the Civil War began the family moved to DeWitt County and farmed there until William was old enough to enlist.
-----
During part of the Civil War he served in the TMV (Texas Mounted Volunteers) or Texas Ranger Frontier Regiment. At the age of 19 he enlisted in Company H (or K), commanded by Captain John J. Dix, along with his older brother, Thomas E. Riddle on March 8,1862.
They re-enlisted or were transferred on January 9,1863, to the Mounted Regiment of the Texas State Troops commanded by Colonel J. E. McCord. Their enlistment was for 3 years or the duration of the War. William had just turned 20. Texas State Troops were involved in several battles in New Mexico and on the Texas frontier. The two brothers may have participated in some of these battles but this is not known.
----
After the War, he returned to Johnson County married Tennessee Ellen Couch and resumed farming along Rock Creek just south of the Johnson County - Tarrant County line, 5 miles west of Crowley, Tarrant County, Texas.
----
In the early 1890's he is thought to have witnessed a stagecoach holdup near his farm and saw where the outlaws hid the strongbox. It is supposed to have contained thousands of dollars in gold coins. He uncovered it and hid it on his property.
One night some time later he had a shoot out with two men who were probably the same outlaws coming to look for their stolen gold. William woke his family in the middle of the night, herded them to the cellar and told them not to come out until he came back for them. Minutes later they heard the shooting. The only injury sustained was to the horse of one of the men.
The two men escaped. No one knows what became of the gold. Stories in the family suggest that it is still buried on his property west of Crowley, Texas. In 1939 a great search was undertaken by his descendants to uncover the gold shortly before his property was sold. Dynamite and a metal detector were used but no treasure was ever found.
This search was written up in the San Diego Union on May 7,1939 on page 3-C.
----
William was an inventor as well as a farmer.
William invented an airship (which was written up in Scientific American in May, 1892), a type of telescope, a scurry plow, a type of well pump, a dishwasher, a device to boost the sounds coming out of the early telephones, and a device to raise sunken ships("the Marine Giant").
---
William even had a book published about 1898 was titled "The Book of Suppositions".
It was a compilation of his religious beliefs written in the form of suppositions.
Each sentence began with "I suppose . . . . .".
---
He is buried in the Crowley Cemetery but without a marker as does his wife, Tennessee Ellen, who lies next to him. Their graves are supposedly just to the right of the entrance, next to the road on the west side of the cemetery. The entrance to the cemetery has been moved since they were buried however, and a new road was built alongside the cemetery.
Their graves may be underneath the new road. Albert Miller once said that he thought someone else is buried on top of them. He said that he thought the graves were those of the Armstrong family.

Notes for TENNESSEE ELLEN COUCH:
*************
Tennessee Ellen Couch may have been married to someone else during the Civil War.
A granddaughter, Ruth Johnson, related a story that her grandmother was sitting on the porch of her home near Rock Creek one day when she saw a man walking up the road.
When the man got close enough to recognize she fainted dead away.
When she came to, she said that the man looked like her first husband who she thought was dead
