George Rider of Pennsylvania and later of Indiana

Linda:

You may have long put this project behind you; however, if you still have records on hand, I would like to add one more fact to the Rider Family data. George Rider born 1786 in what seems to be Pennsylvania and died after 1860 where he is living with his son, George Henry Rider in Indiana was married to Christinia Tipps. Christinia was of German descent and her father was Elias Tippong / Tipps born in Philadelphia whose father was Lorenz Lawrence "Dibon" Tippong / Tipps who was born in Germany. Her mother, Mary Magdalene Nigh / Neigh was born in Germany as well.

According to records, they would have been Pennsylvania Dutch or Amish. Let me know if this rings any bells in you tree as well.

Leah

Names: Rider, Tipps, Anderson, Reeves, Walton

George Henry Rider I (Christiania Tipps / Tippong 1792 North Carolina - Oct 1850 Indiana)
Birth: 10 Aug 1786 Pennsylvania, USA
Death: aft 1860 Vernon, Jackson, Indiana, USA

Possible brother of George Rider:
John Rider
Birth: 1788 Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Apr 1850 Bedford, Pennsylvania

George Henry Rider II (Susannah A Anderson 25 Sep 1825 Indiana - 26 Aug 1888)
Birth: 14 Mar 1821 Vernon, Jackson, Indiana
Death: 02 May 1891 Patmos, Hempstead, Arkansas, USA

George Henry Rider III (Mary C “Mollie” Reeves 26 Jul 1860 AR - 23 Aug 1946 AR)
Born: 04 Dec 1853 Indiana, USA
Death: 22 Nov 1930 Hempstead, Arkansas, USA

Caledonia Ardella “Donie” Rider (John Henry “Jack” Walton 06 Nov 1880 Yell, AR – 25 Nov 1968 Hope, AR)
Born: 04 Dec 1880 Hempstead, Arkansas, USA
Death: 11 Oct 1967 Hope, Hempstead, Arkansas, USA
I'm not sure. My cousin, Larry Ryder in Florida may know. He has been researching longer than I have. (More diligently than me, too!) :>) I believe the "C" may stand for Clyde. Our great grandfather (William C's son) was William Herbert. My grandfather was also William Herbert (or Herbert William) and Larry's was Clyde. William C was born in, I believe, 1842 and married Amelia. Son, William Herbert was born about 1870, married Ida Strickland and died 1915 in a coal mining accident in St. Charles MI. My grandfather, Herb Rider was born in Wellston, OH,1898 married Ethel Marquis and farmed and was a coal miner in Oh, KY, and MI. He died in 1983 in Alma, MI.

no they are not related. There are 4-5 Smith surnames in this family and none are related that i know of. They came from different countries mostly . I am not sure Smith is their birth names or if they changed it when coming into America to have a easier name and one that blended into the society better.

This is incorrect, also. She is buried in same cemetery as Jacob, [he is buried between wife 2 [Caroline Braden] and 3 [Elisabeth [Aleshire]----, widow . Matilda is in a corner grave. I have pictures of these.
I have info on Smith going back to abt 1750....Mitchell to 1784.....
Jacob & Mitilda's daughter, Sarah Frances, in your post is my grandmother.
My branch of the Riders are from Virginia and Pennsylvania. George might have been born in PA. George's son was born in Wythe Co. Virginia.

I don't have a William or John Rider on my tree, but my tree isn't very complete so that doesn't mean much.

Hiya Sue

I'd start with what you do know and work backwards. Moses and Mary are in the 1841 and 1851 census for Exeter. They lived at St Mary Steps which is in the west of the city with a parish church. You could contact the Devon Records Office (http://www.devon.gov.uk/record_office) who offer a look-up service for a reasonable charge. It is possible that Moses and Mary married at St Mary Steps church.

Good luck!

Susan

I have him in the 1840 Greenbrier Census as Thomas Rider Wife: Sarah?..Children: Catherine, Nancy, Rosanna, Mary, William.
In the 1850 Census they show up in Mieigs County, Ohio.
Thomas Ryder M...45 yrs...Birth/PA
Sarah ? F...31 yrs...Birth VA
Catherine F...11 yrs...Birth VA
Nancy F...9 yrs...Birth VA
Rosanna F...7 yrs...Birth VA
Mary F...5 yrs...Birth VA
William M...2 yrs...Birth VA (my gggrandfather)
I think the spelling of Ryder may have been and error on the census report...Sarah also says later that she was born in Conn. not VA..

Hi Larry,

I think your Riders are fascinating, since until now I thought all the Riders of the Greenbrier area were descendants of Wm Rider, who died in Bath Co, Virginia, about 1818-19.

Who was the wife of your Thomas and what were their children's names?

Michael

Hi Larry,

Thanks so much for the response.

I'm looking at a "Thomas Ryder" in Letart Township, Meigs Co, Ohio, 1850, that appears to be your Thomas. However, this fellow is claimed to be born in Virginia - "Va" - not Pennsylvania. Everything else seems to match what you have there.

In the census of 1840, Greenbrier Co, Virginia, I am seeing only one Thomas Rider, said to be born between 1810 and 1820. He is enumerated near men I assume to be his father - "Richd" - and brother - "John". He is not enumerated in Greenbrier in 1850. If this really is the same Thomas that shows up in Meigs Co, a decade later, I think he's a grandson of William Rider of Bath Co.

I have a bunch of George Riders in my tree but not the dates you have. They lived in Sumner, Co.,Tenn and right across the border in Kentucky. My William moved to Missouri right before the Civil War. His father John Rider died in Florida. He was in the Seminole Indian Wars. I too can't get back from there. I think they may have come from Virginia. That may be a wild guess.

Hi Syd. Paul was born about 1787 somewhere. His wife was Sarah Bradford and she was born in Langley Essex 1794. They were married in HArlow 1817 and daughter Harriet was baptist at Harlow 1817. Paul was a publican, abode Harlow Town. The family had moved to St Leonard Shoreditch by 1818 with more children being baptised at St John Horsley down [Paul & Sarah has moved fro St Leonards to `The ships in Distress pub cnr Thomas & Gainsford street Bermondsey and later st The Rose and Crown, Long lane, Bermondsey. Paul , Sarah and son Henry Bradford moved to Stockton Durham in 1841 and Paul died about 1843. No trace of Harriet has been found since her baptism [no burial at Harlow or Bermondsey]. No trace of son Henry Braford Rider since the 1841 census. Your George b 1778 would be the right age to be a brother but I have no idea of Pauls parents or if he had siblings. Such a frustrating family.
Cheers Pam

1) The Rider's are from PA and VA are fairly well documented. A search of the rootsweb, ancestry, and LDS websites should turn over a few stones. I know when I began my search, I had contact with some of the folk researching them.

2)kansas1933-good to hear from you. I'm from that George W. Rider Warren,KY/Sumner,TN line. Specifically the William you mentioned. I'll drop an email, maybe we can trade some info.

I show Matilda Jane Mitchell's parents as John Mitchell and Tabitha Elizabeth Smith. Do you know if Tabitha Elizabeth Smith is related to Robert Smith, father of Jacob Rider Smith, who was married to Matilda Jane Mitchell?

My Great Great Grandfather was Jacob Rider Smith. He had 4 sons and 4 daughters that I know of. William Charles (who I am desended from), James H., Robert Houston, David Arthur, Sarah Frances, Mary Alice, Martha E., and Tabitha Elizabeth. I don't show any William Arthur. Are the names that I have wrong. I know William Charles is correct, because he is my great grandfather and him and his wife Esobel McHaffie are buried at the McHaffie Cemetery in Bruner (Christian) Missouri. Also Jacob's daughter Mary Alice and her husband William Henry Johns are also buried in the McHaffie Cemetery.

Maola Rider Family Bible

I am searching for family members of Maola Rider (deceased in 2006) in order to find the family bible that was used to prepare family group sheets on Mahershalalhashbaz Lyle. Maola's mother, Sivilla Henderson, had the Maher family sealed at Salt Lake temple in 1968. I received copies of the family group sheets in 1985 and would like to see the documentation, if any, for the information on the sheets. The source is referenced as a family bible in possession of Maola Rider. I don't believe Mrs. Rider had any children so presumably any information she had might have gone to cousins or nieces or nephews. If anyone can help me please post a reply.
