Ridgerley really Ridgley?

I have located a Jesse RidgERly whomw well be my g'g'father
Jesse RIDGLEY.

Ridgerley was sentenced to 7yrs Transportation Oct 1945 & went first to Bermuda, & then, in 1849,to VanDL (Tasmania).

I'm obviously trying to establish if they were one & the same,
& also any information as to his return to England because Jesse Ridgley had a son in Fulham,Middx in 1853 with many more to follow. He became quite a successful businessman & I wonder , cosidering his presumably poor record how he was able to fund his start in business.

Any able to help?

Thanks,

Peter

Thanks Barbara,
However, sorry tobe "Nitpicky", but do you have conclusive proof of Williams parentage?

I am aware that they all lived locally but a number of other trees show George, Absalom, & in some cases a Susannah as being children of George (Senior) & Sarah B. but none mention William as well. Hence my quandary.

If you are correct, a number of others will be greatly interested.

Do hope you have cracked it for me, once & for all!

Here's hoping!

Peter.

(PS - This would me as related to a plethora of Bucks Ridgley's shown in the various censuses).

Peter, I have been ferreting around for William,he was indeed son of George & brother to Absolom, from my late husband is descended.their mother was Sarah Buckingham.
now George had a brother William, they were recorded as living in "Princes Risborough Upper Hamlets" Speen, Loosely Row area that would be.have not been able to find where they were born.
The testing would be with Family Tree DNA.
http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1
You can read their FAQ which may answer a lot of questions.
Thank you. Your sons would be eligible, as they are surname Ridgley but not your nephew, as his yDNA would be whatever his surname is.

If they are interested in testing, let me know, and I will see about setting up a Ridgley/Ridgely DNA project, where testing prices would be less.

Hi Barbara,

Do you have any sons, or are there any male Ridgley relatives of your husband that might be interested in DNA testing? There are many Ridgley/Ridgely descendants of men that settled in the 1600s in Maryland, USA that would love to find a connection to England. DNA could show if they relate to your husband's line, or at least rule out that they are related.

Rick Saunders

Sorry, asumed that youwere familiar with the term, Posse
Commitus,1798, list of able bodied men 16-60,to be called into service in event of Bonepart invading, every county had one, but few survived, Bucks being fortunate. I have found it very useful, also listed, horses, waggons, water mills,& windmills, Regards Barbara

RIDGLEY: Ludlow or maybe Richard's Castle Shropshire, then Thorncombe Devon/Dorset

I wondered whether there was anybody who could help me please with my RIDGLEY family or who might share the interest.

My first sighting of Sarah is on the Devon/Dorset border in Thorncombe, so my branch of the RIDGLEY family moved a long way from home. I have Sarah's birthplace as being Ludlow from the 1851 census (searching for Sarah FARRANT b.c.1785,Ludlow,Shropshire) finds her in Lyme Regis.

The IGI draws a blank for Ludlow, but finds the following in Richards Castle - SARAH RIDGLEY - International Genealogical Index - Gender: Female Christening: 10 APR 1785 Richards Castle, Shropshire, England - daughter of Richard and Mary - so I am looking to see whether I can make a guestimation as to what the likelyhood is that it is her.

What I know on Sarah is listed below (the witnesses to the wedding are both known to be connected to her husband's FARRANT family)

Sarah RIDGLEY was born in 1785 (approx.) in Ludlow, Shropshire. She married Samuel FARRANT on 16 December 1806 in Thorncombe, Dorset. By banns, witnesses Joseph COOK, Elizabeth FARRANT. Sarah died after 30 August 1854.

Samuel FARRANT,(*1) son of Samuel FARRANT (1756?-1818) and Mary BOND (1758?-1814), was born on 27 March 1785 in Axminster, Devon. He was christened on 20 May 1785 in Charmouth, Dorset. The address was: Charmouth Independant/Congregational. Charmouth Non-Conformist Bapt. Samuel son of Samuel and Mary FARRANT of Axnt line (?) Society. Note from a transcript held at Dorset Records Office in Dorchester. Original document believed to be held at Kew. Samuel married Hannah HARRIS on 19 April 1804 in Thorncombe, Dorset.(*1) By banns, witnesses Mary PATRICK, Joseph COOK. Samuel died on 24 June 1854. He experienced Admon on 30 August 1854. The address was: Prebendal Court of Lyme Regis at Hadstock. Died intestate. Widow Sarah had to swear there was no will. Estate value declared to be under £100.

Regards
Peter
Death of "Emigrant" RIDGLEY in NV in 1858

Not related but may of interest to someone who is.

Vern D
////////////////////////
Transcribed by Dee Sardoch <deesar@frontiernet.net>
////////////////////////////////////
Weekly Stockton Democrat
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
Sunday, 14 March 1858

A MAN SHOT at GOLD HILL -- The following particulars of a shooting affair at Gold Hill recently, which resulted fatally, are given by the Nevada
'Democrat' of March 10th:

A man named RIDGLEY, alias "Emigrant," was shot and killed yesterday afternoon at Gold Hill by a man named TERRY. RIGELY [spelled 2 ways] left Nevada yesterday morning in the stage for Gold Hill with the intention of shooting TERRY.

A friend of TERRY having heard of RIDGELY's intention, got on a horse and started for Gold Hill to put TERRY on his guard, who armed himself with a double barreled shot gun loaded with buck shot. RIDGELY shot first at TERRY with a revolver, when TERRY discharged both barrels of his gun at RIDGELY, the shot taking effect in his neck, breast and arms, killing him instantly.

We learned last evening that TERRY was on his way to Nevada to give himself up to the authorities. The difficulty originated some weeks ago in a quarrel between the 2 women who have been kept by RIDGELY and TERRY.

The above are all the particulars we could get last evening, and, if correct, TERRY was certainly justifiable. RIDGELY has been regarded here as a desperado, and no one will mourn his loss. It was reported in town yesterday that RIDGELY had gone to Gold Hill for the purpose of killing TERRY, but those who hear the report did not credit it.
Ridgley's of Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, & Neb.

I am looking for information on Samuel Ridgley (and decendants) he is the oldest son of Andrew and Rebecca (Heaton) Ridgley. Samuel was b. Abt. 1828, Crawford Co., Ohio. He married Syble A. Freyer September 09, 1852, Crawford Co., Ohio. Their children
Andrew P. b. Abt. 1852, Crawford Co., Ohio,
Olive R. b. Abt. 1854, Iowa,
Arabella b. Abt. 1856 Iowa and
Permelia J. b. Abt. 1859, Iowa (Listed on the 1860 census in Iowa (Sp Rigley)). The 1860 census is the last census I can locate Samuel and his wife Syble on. The 1870 census show Andrew P. as a farmhand under his uncle's household (Martin Wolf). The Samuel Ridgley listed in the 1870 census in Iowa looks to be his father Andrew. I don't know if his father's middle name was possible Samuel. It list the wife as Rebecca and their children (Andrew and Rebecca's) James and Harriet. It also list Samuel and Syble's children (Arabell and Permelia) under the same household
Andrew P. Ridgley m. Mary E. Dollahite and moved to Atchinson, Nodaway Co., Missouri and later to Gage Co., Nebraska. Their daughter Laura Matildabell (Ridgley) Vandegriftt was my greatgrand mother. I would appriciate and additional information on this line family.

I am interested in any info on both Samuel Stricker and Wm Stricker who were shown in the household of Wm R Ridgley in the above census. Samuel is age 25 and is listed as a farmhand. Wm is listed as age 15 and is listed as a servant. The census shows that he is a mulatto. Is there any indication who his parents were. There is a large family of Strickers in Urbana in Fred. Co. MD in that same year, was he a son they farmed out. Please advise of any info.

Thanks for your interest=sorry I'm late in responding.

First of all,my apologies for ignorance but "Posse Commitus,1978?

I've noticed that there are some varieties of offspring attributed to G & S, on people's trees. I was therefore trying to get an authenticated link up with William & George if it exists. Failing that I don't know how to go about finding William's M&D plus siblings.

I was originally given the George>William link by someone that I can no longer contact, some years ago when I first got started on Gen.

Any help, suggestions, hints & tips would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards,
Peter
