Re: African American - Francis Ridley - b.1864 - Southampton, VA

Gladys,
If you look at the 1860 slave census there are 3 Ridley owners of slaves in 1860. Thomas, Robert, and F.T. Ridley. You can pull those lists and even though there aren't names you may be able to pick your ancestor by the age and color (mulatto narrows the search). There are slave census records for 1850 and 1860 on ancestry.com.

I am following a Cornelius Ridley who by family history we know was the mulatto son of Thomas Ridley III. He was given his freedom by his master (and father) in 1861 and went to Media PA. His features were light skinned, red hair and green eyes. I knew from other records that he was born 1838 or 1839. When I look at the 1860 and 1850 slave census I find a 12 yr old mulatto in 1850 and a 22 yr old mulatto in 1860. I am as certain as I can be without names that this is Cornelius Ridley. Thomas Ridley had 215 slaves in 1850 and 171 in 1860. Only 4 male mulattos in 1850 and 2 male mulattos in 1860. He had a sister Rose who was sold to someone in New Orleans. I find a 15 yr old mulatto girl in 1850 but she isn't there on 1860. I would love to find a deed of sale or some such document.

Southampton Co Va has an ongoing project to digitize their Court records. You can access them at http://www.brantleyassociation.com/southampton_project/south...
The project is not complete but it is here that you may also find some clues. For instance wills often name some of the slaves and estate records may show sales of slaves by name. I just accessed a will of Thomas Ridley I who died in 1815. It mentions the following slaves that are left to his wife Amey: Laney (Lucy??), Dock?, Pomfrey (Pompey), Robin, Hannah, Maggie, Dinah and Cynthia.
[This can be found in will book 8 pg 434-436.]

If luck is with you accessing a will or estate record may help you locate a slave by name.

Years ago in 1978 when a court clerk was asked how we might find slave accountings we were told:
" You will have to look for accounts regarding the Ridley estates to find slave evaluations. These, if in existence, would be found by asking for the indices to "wills" and "fiduciary accounts" at the Circuit Court Clerk's office in Courtland, the county seat of Southampton Co. Bills of sale, it extant, to my knowledge, might appear among court suit papers, which are not open to the general public. Going through voluminous court papers might be a tedious, time-consuming matter, at any rate, and the best approach is to check the "order books" of the old Southampton county court for suits involving family members of the Ridley family."

Now that the Southampton county records are being digitized this might all become possible very soon!
Good Luck!
Blessings!
Susan
Ridley's Southampton Co/Isle of Wight VA & Slaves

There appears to be no information on this message board about the Ridley's of Southampton Co Va. This was previously Isle of Wight Co. VA. until 1749. Some wonderful volunteers are digitizing Southampton co court documents. It is a work in progress and they can be found at http://www.brantleyassociation.com/southampton_project/south...

I was looking at a will of Thomas Ridley (b abt 1750- died Feb 15, 1815)and it mentions the following Ridley slaves that are left to his wife Amey: Laney (Lucy??), Dock?, Pomfrey (Pompey), Robin, Hannah, Maggie, Dinah and Cynthia. (Will book 8, pg 434-436)

It is so difficult to trace slaves I was hoping this might help someone looking for Ridley's with slave heritage.
Hi Ray, sorry I have not replied sooner as I hav'nt been on site for some time.
There were two Ridley families that arrived in WA in about 1842 and both settled orriginaly in the Swan Valley area. Both families knew of each other but were not related. Both moved to the York area where the started quite larg families.
The family you are refering too is the other one and sorry we are not related, that is as far as any research has shown. Hope this helps you.
Sincerly yours Ron

I have been 'shuffling' some of my many papers and found that :-
A John Ridley died 19 January 1970 , aged 81 years.
His ashes were dispersed at Karrakatta Cemetery , Western Australia.
He may have been the next-of-kin mentioned below , in connection with Edward T. Ridley

John Ridley married Elizabeth M Yeomans at Leederville , Western Australia , in 1914. Elizabeth M was possibly known as 'May'.
The couple had two children:
Enid M Ridley , born Leedervile , W.A., 1915
Edward T.
African American - Francis Ridley - b.1864 - Southampton, VA

Francis Ridley
Surnames: Ridley, Thompson

Hello. I am trying to find infomation about my ggrandmother, Francis Ridley's, (b. abt.1864.) people.

Her father was Nat Ridley b. abt 1822, and her mother was Louisa, b. abt. 1824. I'm not sure whether Louisa's maiden name was Peet or possibly Blunt. AFAIK, they all were from Boykins Depot, Southampton Co., VA.

According to the 1870 Federal Census for Boykins Depot, Nat & Louisa's childrens names were Selvia, Dink, Sarah, Solomon, Nat, Alex, and Frances. There were 3 very young un-named children in Nat's household.

Frances married my ggrandfather, Junius Lee Thompson.
They had 3 children, sons... my grandfather, Herbert Ridley Thompson b. 1899, Junius Lee, and James H.

Frances' parents may have been been slaves on the Ridley plantation. I would like to find out which Ridley owned them.

Junius Lee Thompson's father, Junius Lee (the first Junius), may have been a slave of the Thompson family, from Woodville, Bertie Co., NC, or he may have been freeman. Junius Lee Thompson and Frances Ridley lived in Portsmouth, VA.

If anyone has any information about the Ridleys and their plantations, please e-mail me: chinque1@yahoo.com

I have some information on the Thompson family.

I appreciate any help that you give me.

Gladys M.
Deb, your ancestor is David Ridley who married Elizabeth Piety Cox. They had 7 children: John Shelby, Iverson L., Nancy Elizabeth, Jackson Mathias, Theophilis David, Amanda Beatrice, David Lee. Yes, David Ridley's father was the Robert Ridley we are talking about here. His mother was Nancy Mackey. I am also descended from David Ridley through his son Iverson L. I live in Worth Co., GA. Please contact me if you still need information.
I am a descendant of Robert Ridley through his son, David, and his son, Iverson. My mother who is 94 now has been researching him for 60 years. Would you please contact me and let me know what you know about John Ridley and the possibility that he is Robert's father? Any lead will help. Our family legend is that Robert was an orphan and came to Georgia with William Mackey...then married his daughter, Nancy Mackey. I haven't done research in a long time and therefore haven't kept up to date with new findings. Please contact me at sylviadinkel@bellsouth.net.

I too am descended from Robert Ridley and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Piety Cox. My line is through his son, David, and grandson, Iverson. So, hello cousins! Have any of you found any information on Robert's father? Our family legend is that he was orphaned and came to Georgia with William Mackey. Then he married his daughter, Nancy Mackey. Surely there are some probate records somewhere in Virginia to tell us who he was the orphaned child of... Also, do you have records showing Robert Ridley going to Alabama? I show that he died in 1856 in Wilkinson Co., GA. A marker has been placed in Clear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery where he attended church.

Ridley or Riddley of Lancashire, England - does anyone know about them?

Can anyone tell me anything about the following Riddley or Ridley family of Tatham, Lancashire Parish, England and how they were connected to a LAFOON as seen in an entry from the Parish Register in 1690? It would seem to me from a lack of parish entries after the 1640's except for burials and one marriage, and the "vague" and unique nature of the LAFOON entry itself that the family may have actually resided elsewhere and were just being buried in Tatham Parish??? Where did they actually reside?

NOTES ON THE RIDDLEY FAMILY OF TATHAM PARISH, LANCASHIRE COUNTY, ENGLAND AND THEIR CONNECTION TO A LAFOON in 1690.

TATHAM is a parish in Lancaster district, Lancashire. It is about 10 miles from Liverpoole, 1 mile southeast of Wennington railroad station, and 4½ East of Hornby. I ran across the name LAFOON while doing a Google book search in this parish. The name was indexed in the Lancashire Parish Register Society publications, Volume 59, which has been published in a CD. Tatham (St James the Less) Bap & Mar 1558-1812 Bur 1558-1811 Vol 59, MR59, CD59 Four other parishes were included on this CD which I also checked for Lafoon/Laffoon with no luck. These parishes were: Caton (St. Paul), Claughton (St. Chad), Gressingham(St. John), and Hornby(St. Margaret).
The only LAFOON entry I could find is the following:

The entry from the Tatham Church Register 1688-1693, p. 154 (St. James the Less) shows the following under “Tatham Church Burials”:
“JOHN LAFOON s. to one daughter of Riddley 03 Apr 1690”

From this entry and others regarding the Riddley family in Tatham Parish, I put together the following notes:

______RIDDLEY(RIDLEY) - Born probably by 1670 “dau of ____Riddley”; Either married _____LAFOON and had a son named JOHN LAFOON who died on 3 April 1690 and was buried in St. James the Less, Tatham, Lancashire County, England or else she had an illegitimate child named JOHN LAFOON by ___ LAFOON and who was buried on that date. She was possibly either the daughter of Hugh, John, or Thomas Riddley.

RIDDLEY, WILLIAM – Born _____; Buried 24 April 1636 son of Gulielmi Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire Co., England. Gulielmi is latin for "of William".

RIDDLEY, MR. MATTHEW - Born ____ ; Buried 19 Oct 1638, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England. P. 49 A “Mr” in front of his name meant that he was a man of some importance. Very few men in the register were given the form of address “Mr”. So he may have possibly been a member of the gentry, a squire, lord, esquire, etc.

RIDDLEY, JANE - Born ___; Buried on 7 Oct 1642 St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire Co., England p 52. Was she a wife or widow?

RIDDLEY, THOMAS – Born ____; Burial 12 Nov 1662 St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England, p. 68. Was he the son of Matthew or William above?

--------------------------2 RIDDLEY, HUGH – Christened 15 Jan 1632 son of Thomae Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England. P. 44
Married Alice____. See below.

Lancashire Record Office, UK National Archives, A2A.
Lancashire County Quarter Sessions Petitions [QSP 216-287]:
Tatham -- relief for Alice wife of Hugh Ridley, from Ireland. QSP/229/1 c1662
Does the above mean that Alice was from Ireland or Hugh Ridley was from Ireland?

--------------------------2 RIDDLEY, JOHN – Christened 10 July 1642 son of Thomae Ridley, St James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England. P. 52

---------------------------2 RIDDLEY, THOMAS – Christened 8 May 1646 son of Thomas Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England, p 54.

---------------------------2 RIDDLEY, JANE – Christened 16 April 1646 dau of Thomas Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England, p 56; Married John Ingman 27 Jan 1671 St. James the Less, Tatham Parish ( p 76), Lancashire County, England. John Walker either bondsman or performed the wedding. The name “John Walker” was just written behind the name of the groom John Ingman.
-------------------------------+3 INGMAN, JOHN

RIDDLEY, SELFFALLAH – Born ___; buried on 1 Oct 1681 in St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire Co., England, p 83. Was she a wife or widow?

In the parish register, “s” stood for “son”. “fa stood for father”. “de” meant “of”. “uxor” meant “wife of”.

In going through the Tatham Church Registers, this entry for JOHN LAFOON is very unique. First of all, it would appear to me that when a child was buried, the clerk wrote the first name of the child (only) or then added the last name of the child, then wrote either “s. of” (son of) and the father’s first name or “fa.” (father) and then the full name of the father, i.e.,: “William s. of Richard Whitehead” or “William Whitehead, fa. Richard”.
If an adult was buried, the full name of the adult was given only. Sometimes a title or place of residence would be added, i.e., “Mr. Matthew Riddley” or “William Edmondson de Hill House” or “William Edmonson de Longbank”.
If the burial was a wife an entry might be: “Jennet Talbot uxor Richd”. No ages were given of any of the adults or children that were buried.
If an illegitimate child was listed in the christenings, it was written in the following way: “John bastard of John Ellershaw the younger of Moreland and of Anne Ward” or “William bastard of Margret Howson” . There was even one that was written “supposed child of”. But I did not see any burials for an illegitimate child to compare our JOHN LAFOON entry to.

Just based on what I found in the register, I have drawn a few conclusions. First, I think the child’s name was “John Lafoon”, NOT “John Lafoon Riddley”. It was indexed as “John Lafoon Riddley”, but this is the ONLY circumstance that I found in the entire register where two names were listed for a child burial or a baptism unless the last name of the parent was not given and only the surname. For example, a child burial would be written in one of two ways: “John son of Wiliam Smith” or “John Smith son of William.”
In this instance, the child is given two names, first and last. I don’t believe “Lafoon” is a middle name as nowhere else in the register is a middle name given for anyone. However, I could be incorrect in my deduction.

Second, I am not convinced that the child was illegitimate. He could have been as a father is not listed only a mother. However, it is strange the way it was written “to one daughter of Riddley”. This makes me think that the clerk felt it important to make note that the child’s mother was the daughter “of Riddley”. Was “Riddley” a squire or lord that he would be referred to just as “Riddley”. Since there appears to have been several Riddley’s in the area, why was “Riddley”’s first name not given. And why was the mother’s name not given? Did the Clerk not know the mother’s name? Was she living in another parish and they had decided to bury the child at Tatham instead of where the parents lived?

There were no other references to a LAFOON in the Tatham Church Registers prior to 1690 (or afterwards), nor in any of the other parish registers on the CD that I received. The other parishes were all within a couple miles of each other. Tatham Parish was about 10 miles from Liverpool. There was no baptismal/christening record for this child in Tatham Parish. I saw no more references to the Riddley/Ridley family after the 1690’s. Where did they go?

Hi, Jan,
Yes the bells are ringing! My mother goes to the local hospital Day Centre and sees May (Eric's wife) every week - she is marvellous, bless her. Her son, Neville, is in hospital just now so I will go up there on Tuesday and see what I can come up with.

Now, Thomas - could this be Thomas William Richardson who was born about 1915. Did he marry Annie Walton? There is a War Grave for him in Alston Cemetery - he died 18.5.1946.
He had children - Ann, Neil, Terence, Rhona, Sandra. But I don't know if he was married before he married Annie. I thought he might be the son of James Ernest Richardson because I was told he was Eric Richardson's cousin! So no real proof of that yet.

Regards, Vera

Hi, Jan,
I don't recall being in touch with you on Genes but I may be suffering memory failure!!

I didn't get a direct connection between your Richardson family and mine. My Richardsons were Mary Ann and Jane who married Jonathan and William Cousin. The girls were daughters of Jacob Richardson and Jane(Hewitson) and their brother, Jacob, married Anne Doyle.

I will ask about to try and find more info about Thomas.

Regards, Vera

Hi, I'm afraid I can't give you any information about the branch you are researching, I just noted the extraordinary coincidence that my sister is also of the name Eleanor (Claire) Elizabeth Ridley). If it would interest you, I could give you more background of the history of the name, including many notables?

Hi Vera,
I've just looked on my contact list of Genes and if your surname starts with Be (I don't like to put your full surname on here) we were in touch briefly in 2006. We were talking about Eva Richardson and her brother Eric Richardson from Nenthead etc.
Does that ring any bells?

I don't know your Richardson family, so don't know if they are connected to mine or not.

I would be greatful if you could find anything about Thomas Richardson, as the info is for my Mam's cousin, who is trying to find out more about his grandparents. He doesnt know his grandparents names, but we think his grandfather is Thomas Richardson - we have no idea who Thomas married.
But we do know that Thomas's wife left him, and that Thomas was in WW1 and either died in the war, or after the war, from war injuries. Can't find a death for him on the War Graves site, so he may have died after the war.

Also, we have a photo of the Roll Of Honour which was at Nenthead Church. On it is someone called J.E. Richardson.
Do you know who he was, and which Richardson family he belonged to?

Thanks,
Jan

Hi Vera,
Thanks for your reply.
Please could you email me on markandjanboyes@ntlworld.com,
and we can continue on there.

The Thomas Richardson I am talking about was born in Nenthead in 1881, and his parents were James Richardson and Agnes Doyle. In the 1881 census they were living at
Overwater, which I think is Nenthead, Alston.

I'm going to talk to Mam about it, to see if I can find any more information.

Best wishes,
Jan

Hi Steven,
I am sorry but I do not any of those surnames in my family tree.
The only connection I have is through my Nana's sister, Dorothy, who married Robert Ridley in 1905 at Gareshead, Co Durham.
There were quite a few Ridley families in Durham, and Northumberland at that time
normaninz
Hi Lucy
The only connection I have with the Ridley family is through a great aunt and was only interested in possible contact with my cousins or descendants. So the family history has little relevance to my search.
However thank you for your offer
Norman

Hi Vera,
I have been browsing the internet when I came across this old message of mine dated in 2001 about Ada Jane Ridley.
I see that you replied twice to me in 2006, and because I hadnt checked the site again, I havent seen your replies till now. However, I think you and me have been in touch with each other through Genes reunited, have we?

I noticed that you live in Alston and have Richardson ancestors. I'm wondering if you know anything about this Richardson family who lived in Nenthead? They are my Mam's side of the family.

This is the family below, taken from the 1881 Census. They were all born and lived in Nenthead, near Alston, Cumberland. I have some info about the family, about who some of them married, families etc!

James RICHARDSON, head of family, age 38 Lead Miner

Agnes RICHARDSON, (maiden name DOYLE) Wife, age 38

Robert W. RICHARDSON, Son, age 18, Lead Miner - married ?

John RICHARDSON, Son, age 13, - (married Mary Jane WHITFIELD.)
and moved to Crook, Co Durham)

Hannah RICHARDSON, Dgt, age 8, (married John (Jack) SCOTT,
And stayed in Nenthead.

Joseph RICHARDSON, Son, age 6. (married Ada Jane RIDLEY)**
This couple are my great grandparents on my mother's side, and stayed in Nenthead. Have info on them!

Ellen RICHARDSON, dgt, age 4. (married Charles MARTIN)
And lived in Overwater, Nenthead.

Thomas RICHARDSON, Son, age 1 month? He was born in Sept qtr 1880, Married????

Then they had another child born after the census;-
James Frederick RICHARDSON born in 1884. Might have married someone called Jane ??? and lived in Hillersden Tce, Nenthead.

It is Thomas RICHARDSON born in 1880, that I am really wanting to know about.
Trying to find out who he married, when he died etc.

Just wondering if you are related to them?

Best wishes,
Jan Boyes
