Did you ever have any luck in tracing the parentage of Lane Posey Rigg?

I've been able to find documentation of his move within Virginia before moving to Montgomery County, MO about 1830, but have not been able to pin down anything about his parents. I have encountered some family members who are beginning to question whether the name "Remlitz" is accurate, or is one of those names that has been altered as it was passed down from generation to generation.

Would appreciate hearing whatever you have learned in the past three years about these questions.

Bill Fox, Scottsburg, IN

Abner Clark Rigg of Brown County, Illinois was the son of William Travis Rigg and Purlina Clark.
William Travis Rigg was the son of Richard Watson Rigg and Elizabeth George.
Richard Watson Rigg was the son of Peter Rigg.
At least four of Peter's children were born in Virginia (John, Richard Watson, Elizabeth and David. I am not sure of Constantine's birthplace). Peter was in Franklin Co., KY for the 1810 & 1820 census. He was in Shelby Co., KY for the 1830 census. An inventory of his estate was conducted Jan 1831 in Shelby Co., KY.

John RIGG, 1768-1832

Barbara,
The information I have on John and his wife, Margaret Bruce is from the research of Duncan and Eve Adamson that was commissioned by Mr. Rich. Gilman. TO WIT: John was buried at Troqueer Parish, monument #320 and his dau. Isobel, 1806, monument #321, (infant dau. of John) who died in Gibbonhill, [North Yorkshire, England]. While at Dumfries Family History Center, I tried to get a copy of the monument inscriptions at Troqueer and they were out of stock. I have seen many references of the Riggs in England and would not doubt that John was born in Yorkshire. Sorry, wish I could be more help. John

Re: Rigg reunion Putnam Co OH

Paula,

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. This Rigg gathering is of the descendants of Mahlon and Mary [Cox] Rigg of Palmer Twp, Putnam Co. Mahlon was the son of John & Mary Anna [Fissell?] Rigg, of Harrison and Crawford counties, OH, but both born in PA. It is possible that John and Mary Anna had 12 children. I only have some information on six of them. All but one of the six stay connected to Putnam Co., OH. Jonas died at his son Phillip's in DeKalb Co, IN.
John was the son of Ahijah and Hannah [Pennell] Rigg of Washington Co, PA.
Ahijah was the 10th child of Clement Rigg, who had 17 children and probably three wives. Clement died [1808] in Pike Run Twp, Wash. Co , PA. Clement was the first child of Robert and Elizabeth [Richison] Rigg of Chester Co, PA.
Other Ohio areas known to have some Rigg links are: Warren Co, home of Eleazer Rigg, also a son of Clement; two of Clement's daughters, Pricilla and Miriam were born in what is now Columbiana Co; Abigail, another of his daughters is known to have died in Stark Co. Clement's son, Jesse was born in 1778 in Jefferson Co., OH.

Most of this info comes from the book : Who's Where in the John Rigg Family by Steven M. Briggs of AZ.

I don't know if this has been of much help to you. The index of this book does not have a listing for Addie Rigg or any Henderson, but the book does not go into the details of the family lines of the siblings of the above. It is possible one of them is your link. I wish you the best of luck in your search...

Townleys in Maryland

Check the will of John Townley in Maryland in about 1740. He had one daughter named Mary who was the coexecutor of his estate. He did not have sons, but I think his wife was Elizabeth. She was the daughter of John Smith, also of Maryland whose will mentions her as his daughter, but he specifically forbids John Townley to have anything further from the estate. This document will take you back to about 1700 in Maryland. Good luck,

There are many Roberts' I believe his wifes' name was Richardson, and the son was Ebenezer.a Vet
I have done quite a bit of research, and I'm going to Salt Lake City, the largest arquive of names in ancestry history. If you'd like I will let you know what I find. My
daughter lives 2 hrs. away from there. my regards.

Riggs die in fire

I know this is Rigg no s board but I was a Rigg, yet my cousins all went by Riggs, so I am posting this here.

Mo. house fire kills 6 family members
By CARL MANNING, Associated Press WriterSat Aug 11, 8:07 PM ET (2007)
A fire broke out in a home without smoke detectors early Saturday, killing six members of a family, officials said. The father escaped by leaping out a second-story window and was being treated for injuries.
Autopsies were scheduled on the four children and two adults who died.
"I guarantee the family would have got out alive if they'd just had one working smoke alarm," said Steve Henrichson, an inspector with the St. Joseph Fire Department.
The father who jumped thought his wife and children were out of the four-bedroom, two-story home, relative Anthony Lopez said.
"Lisa was ahead of him, he didn't see her, he thought she had made it out," Lopez said.
Bryan P. Riggs, 39, was hospitalized with minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The victims were identified as Lisa L. Riggs, 38; her mother, Patricia A. Duryee, 61; brothers Kealan V. Riggs, 8; Tristan J. Riggs, 11; and Sean Patrick Fox, 16; and a cousin, Brandon Lee Updegraff, 10, who was staying at the house for the night, said Sgt. Fritz Adams of the St. Joseph Police Department.
The fire was devastating to the relatives of the blended family, said Lopez, Duryee's nephew.
"Right now I'm trying to hold it together the best I can," he said. "Dad (Patricia Duryee's brother) and I have had crying sessions throughout the day. Blood didn't matter in this family, love mattered."
Six animals, including two large dogs, also died in the fire.
Fire Department investigators were searching for a cause for the slow-burning fire that was reported at 5:32 a.m. and was largely contained on the first floor. Henrichson said it appeared to have started in a first-floor room, near an electrical outlet where a window air conditioning unit was plugged in.
All six victims were found on the second floor, said Capt. Kevin Castle, a spokesman for the St. Joseph Police Department.
Emergency personnel said they thought the oldest boy, 17-year-old Brandon Fox, had also died in the fire, until he arrived at the charred house at about 9 a.m.
A fire department chaplain drove the boy to Heartland Regional Medical Center to be with family members

Alice E. Rigg, Marble Cutter, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada

The following article is from “Some Women Marble Cutters,” in “The Monumental News” Magazine, the date of the original publication is unknown, although it was published some years after 1885, pp. 120 (?). This article was included as one of the past articles of the magazine in the December, 1939 issue of “The Monumental News” Magazine. (Scroll down to Alice Riggs’ section of the article below. Attached is an image of the article which includes the subjects’ photographs.)

Some Women Marble Cutters

“When Tennyson wrote, ‘Man for the field, and woman for the hearth; man for the sword and for the needle she,’ he could not have foreseen how soon this statement would need revision. Man has well nigh deserted the sword; woman’s needle is now driven by machinery, and in her search for new fields of action, she has invaded many trades and professions that were formerly regarded as the sole prerogative of man. Women in mercantile establishments and business offices no longer excite comment. Chicago has some women bank tellers, and every one of the professions has its women representatives, and the census strenuously announces that there are some women blacksmiths.

“‘Monumental News’ has recently been trying to discover how many women are identified with the arts and crafts tributary to the marble and granite industries, and while the returns have not been by any means complete, we present on this page some evidence of the fact that woman is deserting the needle and taking up the chisel. It is well-known that there are a number of women sculptors who have achieved national prominence in their art, and one of whom is a member of the National Sculpture Society. Consequently our efforts were directed toward discovering some women marble cutters and carvers, and we have thus far succeeded in finding only three. This leads us to believe that the women connected with the trade are either scarce, or are of a more retiring disposition than their sisters in other walks of life, and we urge the timid ones to send along their photographs at once.

“The young ladies introduced on this page are all experienced and reliable in the work of ornamental carving, lettering, and tracing, and express themselves as well satisfied with their work.

“Miss Lucy J. Daniel, of Executor, Mo., was born in Carter county, Ky.; and learned the marble business with her father, who was in business in Charleston, Ark., and at Springdale, Ark., before moving to Exeter, Mo. she has had a long experience in the trade, having taken full charge of the shop in 1885, when she also began lettering. She does all of the lettering and some of the cutting and rubbing, and reports a good and growing business. She has recently been investigating homestead claims in western Kansas, and contemplates retiring from business and moving out there.

“Miss Alice E. Rigg is a Canadian girl, and acquired her first experience in the shop of her father, Geo. Rigg, at Windsor, Ontario. She cut her first inscription seven years ago, and has since become a valued assistant in her father’s business, and it is sufficient testimony to her skill to say that customers continue to be pleased with her work. She does not do stone cutting or the heavier work of the shop, but is an adept at carving, tracing, lettering and all ornamental work on granite and marble. Miss Rigg does much of her carving from original designs of her own, and become so skilled in this line that her drawings for carved work are in demand by out of town workers, and she is reputed to be the most skillful marble carver in Windsor, where her work is in great demand. Our illustration shows an excellent likeness of her in working costume.

“Miss Pearl Sams, of Great Bend, Kansas, also learned to handle the mallet and chisel under the instruction of her father, W. J. Sams who is a veteran monument man of thirty years’ experience. She writes that she began at the age of seventeen, and has been at the trade over seven years, thereby revealing what is commonly supposed to be one of the secrets of the sex. She received a thorough training in the craft, beginning with frosting, lettering footstones and small slabs and proceeded gradually to the better class of work. For the past three years she has been doing the best of lettering and tracing, and can cut an inscription as quickly and as thoroughly as the average man in the trade. She does not do heavy cutting or polishing, but considers herself master of the other branches of marble cutting. She says: ‘I love my trade and expect to follow it as long as my name is Miss Pearl Sams.’

“There are a number of women who are successfully managing businesses formerly conducted by their husbands, but very few of them do the actual work of cutting.”

Photo captions: (1) Miss L. J. Daniel; (2) Miss Alice E. Rigg; and (3) Miss Pearl Sams.

Peggy B.
Hi, I was reading a post by Steve Rigg of No. Carolina and discovered the following informationa about a sugar planter born in Westmoreland by name of Henry Rigg.. not sure if there is any connection with your Great Uncle Henry?
My father was born in Jamaica and is called Trevor Rigg, he's in his sixties now and is of mixed parentage.
As a Rigg, who's born and brought up in the Midlands, of Jamaica origin, I'm really curious to know if this Henry Rigg was a distant relation to my father.

http://www.jnht.com/heritage_site.php?id=73

Happy researching!
This might be if interest, if you ever check these pages again!!

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Retreat, St. Mary, is a very beautiful historic Georgian building erected on land donated by Henry Rigg in 1828. Henry Rigg was a rich sugar planter born in Bowness, Westmoreland, England in 1791.

He resided in Retreat St. Mary for a period of thirty-five (35) years where he died in 1869. The Church is constructed of brick, cut stone, concrete, and wood. It is built on the site of an old sugar estate.

My father Trevor Anthony Rigg was born in Jamaica of Caribbean/British mixed decent and I've always wondered where my unusual surname hailed from...
Best,

Suzy

Hi, ive just come across your message. My family on my dads side are Riggs. Im trying to trace my dads father and siblings. Seems easier said than done without getting the birth certificates etc. What i do know is that they came from around the manchester area, prestwich for sure. i hope that helps a bit.

liz
