I was reading with interest your inquiry regarding the Riggans family. My Grandmother was Annie Garland Lindsay Riggans married to Mathew Hewitson. I have been to Dalmellington on a few occassions and have visited Bill and Sadie in Bellabank. My father Walter who would be your dads first cousin visited Dalmellington in the late 1980's and stayed with Tom and Margaret Riggans in Dalmellington. Sadly both Tom and my father have passed away in the last few years. I was in Dalmellington just 3 weeks ago and visited Margaret, who is recovering from a broken hip.I am busy doing a family tree at the moment and at present i am tracing the Riggans, any information would be appriciated.
Kindest Regards
Noel Hewitson Timaru New Zealand

DNA Project

Riggan/s, Riggin/s, Riggen/s, Ragain/s males from anywhere in the world are invited to contact the Riggins Family DNA project if they would be willing to submit a tiny sample of their cells taken from a painless cheek scraping in their own home.

The Riggins Family DNA project is ongoing at Family Tree DNA, a company primarily dedicated to helping genealogists find relationships beyond what is available in the written record. Family Tree DNA uses a lab associated with the University of Arizona, and results are private and confidential. This is not the stuff of paternity suits or CSI, and a person can never be personally identified by their sample.

The male Y chromosome is extracted from this simple mouth swab and is as unique as a fingerprint. Unlike a fingerprint, which differs from one person to another, the Y chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from father to son for many generations. DNA analysis can with scientific certainty say that your ancestors are or are not related to someone else’s ancestors. We are hoping to clarify many years of painstaking paper research by dedicated genealogists and formerly independent researchers by sorting out different Family Trees and therefore helping many of our Tribes by these means.

For more information, contact the project administrator of the Riggins Family DNA Project, George E. Riggins, Jr., at geriggins@verizon.net. For more information on DNA testing, or to join the project, contact Family Tree DNA at www.familytreedna.com.
Hi Laura

I am researching the RIGGANS family from Ayrshire. The first connection is Mat(t)hew RIGGANS/REGANS born 1798, Maybole who married Agnes ARTHUR born 1800, Auchinleck, on 1 March 1821 at Auchinleck. Known children were Janet born c1822, Ochiltree; Elizabeth chr 25 Dec 1823, St Quivox; John c1826, Cumnock; Matthew 28 Oct 1829, Auchinleck; Mary chr 21 Nov 1830, Old Cumnock & Agnes c1833, Cumnock.

I have further information on all of the children except Elizabeth & have found a baptism for a Matthew REGAN on 19 March 1798 at Maybole, son of Timothy REGAN & Mary McQUEER. Unfortunately, I have not found a death entry for Matthew although I know he was alive in 1870 when his wife died & I can't find him on the 1881 census

Any connection?

Hi Ainsley,
Yes, that's the correct connections. I asked my father and he said that your grandmother, annie riggans, is his aunt. He recalls they moved to New Zealand. Is that where you live?
He says our family has a photo of your grandmother and her sisters. He mentioned Dora, Nell and Peg??

My dad is John Riggans from pennyvenie, Dalmellington. He has 2 brothers, william and Alex, and a sister Margaret. His mother was Mary Riggans (nee Geddes) and father James Riggans. James' brother was William (Bill) who married Sadie. He recalls one of the Hewitsons staying with his uncle Bill when over from New Zealand on a couple of occassions. My dad and his family wrote to someone in New Zealand before who was a Riggans but I'm not sure if it was your family. He said to tell you that you could have his address if you wanted to write because he truly is a fountain of knowledge and can remember so many people from his childhood and family connections.

Please reply and let me know how much you know about Dalmellington, where I lived until a couple of years ago when I moved to Glasgow.
Take Care,
Laura
