It seems you are having the same trouble all of his descendants have. I have been hunting him and Charlotte Haithcock for about 15 years. I, too, have our liniage down to my immediate family. We are decendent from Reeves Washington Riggins, one of his sons. We located Charlotte's father, listed as "Scott Haithcock", but think this is in error. He was a "Scout" during the Revolution for one of the generals.
Charles Washington Riggins

My name is Cynthia Riggins Kackowski and I am looking for information about my GGGG Grandfather Charles Washington Riggins .I have come to a dead end after him.Though the rumor through my father is some how we are related to George Washington. How good question. The rumor was Charles mother was Jane Washington Riggins (first wife of Augustine Riggins) however she died in 1729.They did have a daughter Jane Washington but she died in 1735.The first would have been to old to be Charles mother since he wasn't born til 1775 and the other passed as a young girl.So here I am stumped. I have information from Charles up through my immediate family including dates ,names spouses and so forth. If any one has any information I would greatly appreciate the help and or information you have to share . Thank you in advance ...CRK

Hi Charley,

Amanda Clementine "Tine" "Tiney" (Moore) Riggins Vass was my grandmother Cameron's first cousin. Grandma's mother, Mary Ann "Polly" (Moore) Hollingsworth was a sister of Tine's father Joseph. I have a lot of information on the Moore family and have been researching the Riggins line recently. I would very much like to exchange information with you. I will try emailing you directly and I hope that your email address is still good.

I think that I found John Riggins and his parents in Arkansas. We have always heard that John died in Indian Territory before 1900 by which time Tine had moved with her family back to Missouri. I also have Henry Nelson Vass's Civil War pension file which has a lot of information on him and his earlier wives.

Ross Cameron
Re: Joe Riggins Family

Such a sorry legacy left to me by my father.

A BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY.
( as if I could give a damn )

My father, Charley Joe Riggins was a jack booted Nazi motorcycle cop, who would beat on any occasion that suited him for his own pleasure. As a legacy he left behind a collection of whipping material that ranged from a thin, ridged, metalic coated CHP uniform belt to an arms length of bailing wire that cut my flesh with a pain that can only be described as Hell. May HIS and only his soul rest in damnation forever and forever be removed from our lives.

He was a cruel man to say the least. Known to harm, humiliate and torment not only me but my mother as well. My sisters seemed to fair much better. Go figure.

My elder sister, Judith Elaine, who married earlyto a man named Henry Penrod tells me he was relieved of his duties as with the California Highway Patrol for soliciting college girls caught in traffic infractions to "work off there fines" in the back seat of his patrol car.

He deserted his family (ie; my mother Margie, Myself and my little sister Randi) in the mid 1960's and left us to fend for ourselves. My mother did what she could and I grew up quickly working whatever jobs I could until I graduated High school in 1974 and joined the Navy.

I married soon after to a woman by the name of Karen Armstrong. We had a daughter, Jennifer Lynn and devorced in 1984.

I returned to college soon after, earned my degree and pursued an honest and honorable career as a photographic equipment technologist.

George, I am replying 8 years after you wrote your post:

I have a William *P.* Riggins (possible misprint of the middle initial?) that was born in Kentucky (unknown town) in 1813 and l;ater moved to Cole Co., Missouri where he died in 1864.

One of his children was George Washington Riggins (born 1847 in Missouri).
Sara, I have sent a more lengthy message to your email address.

I am John N. Riggins, a descendant of James Wyatt Riggins and Lockie Watson Burnham. I have a considerable amount of information on my Riggins line (a decent amount before James Wyatt but quite a bit more regarding his descendants) and only a sparse amount of Col. Richard E. Burnham, his ancestors (actually I have nothing there) and some of his descendants.

I would welcome exchanging any information. I have always wanted to learn more about my Burnham line.

By the way, I have Richard E. Burnham being birn in TN but no precise location. I *do* have a letter in which a Burnham relative writing to Lockie mentions Viola, TN. Do you have any more on that?

Please help me extend my knowledge of my Burnham roots.

John Riggins
I just found your message (July 2008) on the Ancestry.com site:

I am a descendant of Thomas B. Riggins - including James Wyatt Riggins who was my great grandfather. My whole Riggins line traces back to McLennan County Texas (and before that to MO, KY, TN and NC).

I have a *lot* of data from James Wyatt Riggins down to the present (for my line). I would be willing to share whatever would be helpful to you.

My direct descendants are as follows: James Joseph Riggins to Thomas B. Riggins to James Wyatt to Leslie Burnham Riggins to William H. Riggins then to me.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. My association is a little more complicated. Thomas B. Riggins daughter "Mollie", who my grandmother believes was named Mary Eleanor (Please correct me if you know another name)with her husband, Earl Bateman raised my great grandmother Stella Mildred James as their daughter. Earl Bateman's nephew Fred James (his sister Ara's son) and his wife Emma died young and left 5 young children to raise. Mollie Riggins Batement and Earl had no children and they took Stella and raised her. She also lived with Stella and her family until her death. They were referred to as "Little Mother" and "Daddy B" and much loved by my grandmother Elanor Whitlock Chafin, Stella's daughter. I actually have some Mollie's autograph book from the late 1800's from when she went from Texas back to Missouri to visit. I also have a piece of art (a drawing of a baby" that was done by a Riggins. Her name was different and i beleive it was Una? I believe she was Leslie Burnham Riggins Sister? Anyway, I have furniture in my home, etc. that belonged to Little Mother and Daddy B. Even though related by distant blood, they are considered the parents of my great grandmother. Would love some information about the riggins and you!! ok, I am going to list out my connection: ARA Bateman is sister of Earl Bateman who married Mollie Riggins. Ara's son, Fred James had Stella James Whitlock who was raised by Mollie and Earl. Stella and Jack Whitlock had Elanor Earle (named for Mollie and Earl Bateman), who married Louie Chafin and they had Cynthia Luanne Chafin who married Kenneth Conner who had me Dede Conner (now Henning!). See what I mean!

My grandmother Elanor Whilock Chafin spent a lot of her child hood in Ballinger, Runnels Co., TX where Mollie and Earl bateman lived. At one time, Earl owned a lumber yard there. My grandmother passed away this last april at 89 years old. I was always pumping her about information about the families. She mentioned this "Una" as a Riggins cousin or niece and she also mentioned a Bennie (female)Riggins. I know that Una married a Ridhard Helwig. Do not know about Bennie. Mollie married Earl Van Dorn bateman in Bosque Co., TX in 1884. I have seen the record in the Bosque Co., Historical Society. I know for sure part of her name was Eleanor as for Mary being the first name, my grandmother thought that it was Mary, but not sure. I may have some old photgraphs that are labeled in Missouri. I have a couple of families from Missouri. These are old, late 1800's photos in a book. They have been around the family as long as I remember. They were kept in the same box with Mollies autograph book. Either they are Riggins or they may be from my "James" Family. I will look to see if any were made in Cole Co., MO or Clinton, Henry Co., MO which is where the Riggins lived. The census shows Thomas B and family in Cole Co., MO in 1840, 1850, 1860. Then, 1870 in Clinton, Henry Co., MO. After Thomas dies. I found Nancy and some of the children living with Daughter Eliza in Clinton, Henry Co., MO. Eliza lists herself as a hotel keeper and all the others list themselves as Asst. in the Hotel. There is really no information to get until 1900. I believe that Earl and Mollie were in Globe, Gila Co. Arizona in 1900. I find a Earl V.D., and Mary E. everything looks correct except she apparently is lying about her age. Any way, after that, they are in Runnels Co. Any way, I will make copies of the autograph book, etc. and get them ready. I would love to her the story about James Wyatt. Yes, my grandmother told me about his role as Mayor of Waco. I also found a newsclip on the net from a funeral director: Here it is: Information from Fall & Puckett Funeral Directors 1896-1897 Undertakers
and Funeral Directors:
J. W. Riggins, Waco trading Co., 123-129 South 4th Street: Furniture,
carpets, stoves, crockery, glassware, undertaker. President Texas
Immigration and Industrial Association. He organized this association in
Dallas in July 1985. WACO TRADING CO.: J. W. RIGGINS, PRESIDENT &
MANAGER, W. W. SELEY, VP, M. A. SULLIVAN, TREASURER, N. B. RIGGINS,
SECRETARY.
My GGGGGrandfather was named James and was born in 1784 somewhere on the east coast. He came to Indiana around 1800's and by 1818 had land recorded on Lawrence Co., IN where he lived until his death in 1845. I have no idea if we are related in anyway but I have been up against a stone wall trying to go back any farther than my James. Any information you have would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you,
Rick Riggins

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I took some time off from my search becauyse I've hit a wall!! Anyway I don't think your James Riggins is related to me...my James stayed in Cumberland Co til his death in 1836. Some of his children moved, a daughter Elizabeth married a Murphy and lived in Kansas. Sorry wish I could help you.

the Mayor of Waco story:

Okay, I will tell you a little about the James Wyatt Riggins story that portrays some of our family's character.

But I need to point out that I need to paraphrase the story. It is from actual events and is recorded in a history book of McLellan County, Texas (of which I have a copy) but Ancestry.com does not want posters to quote from possibly copyrighted text so I need to re-phrase the story.

Okay, the story:

James Wyatt Riggins became Mayor of Waco and was a prominent businessman of the city (among many ventures, he built the Riggins hotel, an 11-story building that was still there when I last visited in 1996). While he was Mayor, Waco was rapidly growing and becoming concerned with their fresh water situation. They could remove water from the river but it sometimes barely flowed. The city also had a couple of wells but none provided enough water to suit future needs.

A couple of individuals bought some land on the edges of Waco and indicated that a well with lots of water was on the property. They proposed to sell the land to the city (for a healthy profit). James Wyatt Riggins, as an adept businessman, felt the price was too high and that there were no guarantees as to the continuing future of the well. He opposed the purchase. The rest of the citizens were desperate for an assured water supply and felt that James W. was being petty and stubborn and holding Waco back from its destiny. He continued to hold out and oppose the purchase. Finally, other elected officials and the citizenry rose up in anger and removed James Wyatt as Mayor. He was the first (and maybe only?) Mayor from Waco that was removed during his term. James was humiliated and reviled.

James was replaced by someone else and the deal to purchase the land was completed. Within a few years the well first turned brackish and then dried completely up. The citizens then realized that James had been right all along. At the next election, James was easily re-elected Mayor and served for the full term.

But James never forgot how the people of Waco had treated him. At the end of his term he announced that he and his family were moving to California where he hoped to "re-build his shattered fortunes."

By the way. I possess the gold watch that the city of Waco presented to James Wyatt Riggins when he finished his term as Mayor (I inheirited it from my father, William Howell Riggins, Sr.).

I have *lots* of other information about James W. Riggins - the names of companies he owned and operated, festivals and fairs that he chaired, community organizations that he headed, etc. Plus I have much info on his ventures in California (ranches, real estate deals, orange farms, etc.). And remember, I have a copy of the history book that gives the full account of Mayor Riggins' impasse with the entire citizenry of Waco.

John Riggins
Dede: Thanks for the quick response.

*YES* I would like information on your family lines. And I would be happy to share anything that I can from my records.

By the way, for some unknown reason I have 2 profiles in Ancestry.com: jnrigg1 which I accidently used to write my first message to you, and jnrigg, which is my original log-on to Ancestry.com I am replying now using the jnrigg sign-on.

I have nothing more on a name except for Mollie Riggins and a birth date of Dec. 1859 (I don't even have a day). I had no marriage information, no death date, no subsequent residency, etc. So any info on Mollie would be wonderful.

As to a sister of Leslie Burnham Riggins named "Una" - I do not have that. I have the following brothers and sisters: 1)Annie Robbie Riggins, b. 13 Sep 1880, d. 21 Apr 1944; 2) Eddie Mai Riggins, b. 4 Feb 1884, d. 19 Jul 1960; 3) Jimmie Green Riggins (female), b. 2 Mar 1887, d. Jan 1964; 4) Paul Wyatt Riggins, b. 17 Mar 1891, d. Feb 1967, and 5) Edith Lyle Riggins, b. 21 May 1893, d. 29 Jun 1899.

I knew each of my great-Aunts, Eddie Mai, Robbie and Jimmie as they all at one time lived in Hemet, California (I was born in Alhambra, CA) as we visited them frequently.

If you want it, I have all kinds of information on all of the above (husbands names, etc. - although I have children of none of the three Great-Aunts and I believe at least 2 of them never had any children). I also have a lot of information on Leslie Burnham Riggins (he is my grandfather).

By the way, I would love to have a copy of Mollie's autograph book and the drawing you mentioned. I would be more then happy to pay duplication costs and postage.

Also, please let me know if you would like details on any of the information I have.

By the way. I am John N. Riggins. My father was William H. Riggins, Sr., my grandfather was Leslie Burnham Riggins and my Great Grandfather was James Wyatt Riggins.

I have lots of info on James Wyatt Riggins (Leslie Burnham's father). Did you know he was Mayor of Waco, McLellan County, Texas and also a prominent businessman there (he built the Riggins Hotel which was then the tallest building in Texas)? Also, there is a (Verified) story about James Wyatt Riggins that gives you some insight into the Riggins character. It is actually quite interesting and controversial for the day.

I am going to give you a round-about way to reach me (for privacy and Internet identity theft reasons): You can contact me at jnrigg@juno.com That is pretty much a "throw-away" address I use to divert spam and I only check it sporadically. Once I hear from you (and you are safe to send to that address), I will supply a more direct email address as well as mailing address and phone number.

It is nice to meet another relative (and despite your story, I consider you "family").

John Riggins

Theres a good chance that James Riggins came from Cumberland County New Jersey. My ancestor, Thamas Ragains, died in Cumberland County in 1751. He had several sons, some of them spelled their name RIGGIN. My Cousin (Ragains') DNA matches a (Riggins')DNA 25-25. I have a strong feeling that we are of the same line.

DNA Project

Riggin/s, Riggen/s, Riggan/s, Ragain/s males from anywhere in the world are invited to contact the Riggins Family DNA project if they would be willing to submit a tiny sample of their cells taken from a painless cheek scraping in their own home.

The Riggins Family DNA project is ongoing at Family Tree DNA, a company primarily dedicated to helping genealogists find relationships beyond what is available in the written record. Family Tree DNA uses a lab associated with the University of Arizona, and results are private and confidential. This is not the stuff of paternity suits or CSI, and a person can never be personally identified by their sample.

The male Y chromosome is extracted from this simple mouth swab and is as unique as a fingerprint. Unlike a fingerprint, which differs from one person to another, the Y chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from father to son for many generations. DNA analysis can with scientific certainty say that your ancestors are or are not related to someone else’s ancestors. We are hoping to clarify many years of painstaking paper research by dedicated genealogists and formerly independent researchers by sorting out different Family Trees and therefore helping many of our Tribes by these means.

For more information, contact the project administrator of the Riggins Family DNA Project, George E. Riggins, Jr., at geriggins@verizon.net. For more information on DNA testing, or to join the project, contact Family Tree DNA at www.familytreedna.com.
This is my direct line and I am stuck with Priscilla. Is Riggan her maiden name or is it another spelling of Riggins? I know it is a variation of the last name in a lot of records. I would love to exchange information with you.

Hester Riggins (Born 1895 ? - Died (unknown)

Hello,

I am looking for information on a Hester Riggins. He was my grandfather's father and we have very little information on him. According to the 1930' federal census he was born in Alabama and died in Smithville, Monroe County Mississippi(I believe he may have been born there also). I believe he was born around 1895. I am not sure if he had any siblings. Later he went on to marry Bessie Patrick and together they had 5 kids. Also, he may have spelled his surname - Riggans. If anyone has any information on a Hester Riggins, please reply.

Thanks!
