Hi relative!
Matti and Fredericka were my gg grand parents..from what I know, 5 boys and two girls came over her, their americanized names were Jacob, Matt, and Andrew(antti) rinell, charles rinnell, and joseph riippa. the girls were sophia pentilla and rosa mattson. I am a little lost on the maria koskela, but I would have to look at my aunts papers. Joseph is buried here near astoria in greenwood cemetery. Jacob drowned in 1888 and is buried in oceanview cemetery near here. Jacobs widow then married Matt...which made things more complicated relatedness wise. Many of the rest are buried across the river in the deep river cemetery. I think rose mattson is buried in grays river cemetery...or rosburg.(washington). Adolf Riippa (minister), cousin of jacob, is buried in deep river as well.
my mother was from near hancock, where joseph was killed by lightening in 1896

re isaacson, I found out in one place it said my grandfather John gustav adolf isaacson was born in norway, although he was half finnish and half swedish. I guess Isaac must have been a miner in norway before going to america in 1887 or so...I am not sure when..my grandfather was small..his sister lizzie liianki was born in finland or norway as well

Hello,
I happened on your question about Adolf RIIPPA and Suomi College. I recently bought the above Jubilee book which has a little info on Adolf.
p. 13
"In 1895, Mr. Adolf Riippa was ordained to the ministry and called to be missionary pastor and field agent for the College, but funds were slow in coming."

This book is written in both English and Finnish? There are wonderful pictures in it also. There is no index, so I cannot tell if there is more info on Adolf Riippa in the book.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Kathy@familywesearch.com

JMattila,

I would like to know who was your father or mother, that Theodore Rinell was your great grandfather? The reason that I ask is that my grandfather was Theodore Rinell who lived in northern MN. My father Roland (Abe) Rinell was Theodore's youngest son.

George

I am trying to find my children's great great grandfather's family in Kalvia. He came to the United States through New York City. His passenger listing was Theodor Rita, but whoever wrote down his name may have misinterpreted the spelling. He may have said Riippa, but it sounded like Rita. When he filed for his naturalization papers in the U.S., he took the name of Theodore Rinell and was born around 1878 in Kalvia, Finland. Do this sound familiar to you? I have info from his family in Minnesota if this is a relation to you.
Thanks. Jodie

Well, I don't think those two are him. I don't have my info in front of me now, but I think Isaac died in 1937 in michigan and was about 80 years old. only his son john and a daughter elizabeth were born in finland(or norway) before they came to america. his second wife was amelia kauppi/coppari who was born in america. the first wife was swedish and I think her name was emma/emily?? nelson???(maybe emma or emily nelson is another isaac's wife) the first wife is buried in the eagle river cemetary, while the rest are buried in liminga/redridge, except maybe a few elsewhere. isaac had a lot of kids. john gustav adolf, elizabeth(lizzie) liianki, bill , allie(aliena)wellems, nina ciabatteri, sophie strieter, mae moilanen(living?), lillian illikainen, selma(johnson?), edna, and another son who disappeared about 1935 after going to vermont(peter or matt??)I did not realize until recently that my grandpa john was possibly born in norway, but some death records of his children say he was born in norway, but one says finland.john was born about feb 21, 1871/72 and died in oregon in 1964 but is buried in michigan. It would be nice if this was the norwegian/finnish family you were already looking for! but isaac was probably definitely from jepua as ilmonen's book and my aunt's notes say jepua or jepualta. but when they went to norway, I don't know. I just think my grandpa was about 5 when they came to america. thanks so much for looking!

Hi, I did find a Juho Riipa in my line. He was born before 1823, in Kalvia, I believe. He was a little older than my great great grandfather Matti Riipa. And it seems he was the second Juho (usually changed to John) in the family, so I suspect the first died and they named the next boy the same name(a fairly common occurance from what I have seen).I think the oldest was Antti, whose son was Adolph Riipa , who became a pastor here in oregon and in michigan. He was at Suomi College(when it was just beginning) in some position, also. He might have been at Augustana in Illinois, also? Do you think this could be the line of your John Jacob Riipa? There were other siblings, one was named Jaako which is usually changed to Jacob. He was born after 1823. My aunt might know more if you have more info on when your John was born and where?

Hi, I don't have the info right in front of me, but they came from the Kalvia area of Finland, also Kokkola or Kaustinen(all in western/southern Finland. I don't remember a John(was it Johan or Juho in Finland?), but I will have to check. Jacob Riipa came to Oregon via Pennsylvania in 1872-73. His father was Matti Riipa. sometimes it is Riippa. I understand it means snowbird in swedish. I will have to check farther back, but I don't know of any who went to Ohio. But they were a large family. I will look it up and get back to you.

I do not have anything in regard to your Riippa's, but have some of my own and believe that there is probably a tie between our families. My great-grandmother was Sofia Erkkisdtr Riippa (pronounced Reepa, the r being rolled and the p sounding almost like a hard b). She was born in Kalvia, Vaasa, Finland, where most of the Riippa's lived. I have her family back to the late 1500's, thanks to the Finnish Genealogical Society there in Finland. Most of the Riippa's have Americanized their name to Ripa or Rippa, as most couldn't pronounce it correctly, or the spelling was changed and they left it that way. As I have been doing genealogy research for years, the best avenue to try to find them would either be through Naturalization and Citizenship records for Michigan, or through census and church records. Most Finns are/were Lutheran. Hope this helps in your search.

I am also descended from the Riippa's of kalvia. my branch is from Matti Riippa. he and five of his sons, as well as two daughters, came to america in the 1870's and 1880's. they came to the west, near the mouth of the columbia river, rather than finland(although jacob did stop in pennyslvania for a year or so). four of the sons, jacob, matt, andrew, and charles, changed their name to rinell (rinnell in charles's case).one daughter married a pentilla(bengtila) and another married a mattson. a few stayed behind in finland. joseph kept the riippa name. he studied to be a minister and was killed when lightening struck the church steeple in hancock, michigan (about 1896). another cousin, adolph riippa, was a minister. he was in the hancock/atlantic mine area around 1907 as he performed the marriage ceremony for my mother's parents. he is buried near deep river, washington.
have you heard that riippa means snowbird? we are probably distant cousins. i do have more info as my aunt researched the riippa family tree.
