Hello Regi, I saw your post in Ancestry.com regarding Alma Rinear. According to my research, I have a great-aunt, Alma Rineair, daughter of Arthur Rineair. You will notice that my family spells the surname as Rineair but I have found early records where the name appeared without the 'i" and even several of spellings on the census records depending on how it was pronouced such as Rhineer. I have had difficulty tracing the Rineair family due to family problems, moving, multiple marriages, religion, etc. My family has been in the Cincinnati area. There are also a number of Rinear's who also live in the same part of town which makes me think that there is a connection somewhere. I haven't been able to get past my 2nd great grandfather. David Rineair

Hi David,
My step-father was Norbert C. Rineair, son of Clifford J. Rineair and Lena Schmuelling. Born in Cincinnati, OH on April 18, 1919.
He passed away January 28, 1978 in Clark County, OH (during the blizzard of 1978).
I'm sure you must be related somehow. I would love to know more about his family.
Please contact me at Sch3111@aol.com
Sue Hasty

My surname is "Rineair" but I have found several misspellings in records of the late 1800's with "Rinear". My Rineair ancestors have been in Cincinnati for several decades. Had anyone else found this same situation to where I can get past my great great grandfather? I would consider myself an amateur at this geneaology research and would appreciate your assistance. Thank you. David

Hi Susan

I think we may be distantly related. Elwood Rineare (how he spelled the name) was married to Sarah last unknown. We know that from a series of letters he wrote to Sarah during his service in the Civil War. My aunt has 19 letters written by Elwood from about 1862 to 1865. They include the places where he was camped while serving with the 5th New Jersey Infantry in Joseph Hooker's Division.

We think he was shot in the arm at one point. And that he did not return to the army when he was on Veteran's furlough. That was a common thing for soldiers at that time.

Please contact me as I have very little information about that side of my family. My grandmother's maiden name was McGough, and she was born around the turn of the century.

Thanks

David Breidenbach

I have an ancestor, don't know how far back, but his name also was Elwood Rineare (his spelling). His wife's name was Sarah Laughlin (or possibly Loughlin). According to the National Park Service in Petersburg, he served in the 5th New Jersey Infantry, in Joseph Hooker's Division. I have proof that he was with Hooker, and about 19 letters he sent home to his wife. The addresses on the letter include battle sites such as Brandy Station and Culpepper.

Hi, Josie -

Thanks for the reply. Do you know anything about Elwood's relatives? I seem to find scattered individuals named Rhinear, Rhineer, etc., in New Jersey and in Pennsylvania, but no documentation of the family - assuming it is one family. I suspect that many of the individuals are in fact related, as many of the same given names recur, even as the spelling of the surname varies.

Know what you mean about the information you turn up about your ancestors. I keep telling myself it has to be understood in context...don't judge someone if you haven't walked in their shoes.

For example I have found Emmeline Rhinear and her daughter Miriam in several census records, but never a husband and father. Did the father die early on? Or was Miriam illegitimate, perhaps? I do not know.

I have copies of 19 letters Elwood Rineare (military has it Rinear) sent to his wife during at least two years of his service during the Civil War. Elwood would have been a very distant relative of mine, through the McGough family line.

Somehow, he is related to my grandmother, Alice McGough Breidenbach. My aunt has the original letters, and I have copies. I would not be too upset about Elwood's desertion. It seems he deserted while on veteran's furlow, a common thing to do. After all, being part of Hooker's Division (Co G, 5th New Jersey Infantry), he would have been involved in some of the bloodiest fighting during Grant's Potomoc Campaign.

Hi, Robert

Thanks for replying to my message. You could be right. I could never figure out what my ggrandfather was doing in Philadelphia, as all his family was in NY, Connecticut, or Michigan.

He married Marion (Miriam) Rhineer (Rinear, Rhinear, Rhyneer)
in Philadelphia in 1881. Shortly thereafter they moved to Connecticut, but returned in about 1908. presumably they still had relatives there at the time. His name was Maynard Smith, and she was later variously known as Marion or Mary Smith.

I would be glad to check the census, but could you tell me a bit more about what you are looking for? Which year? Which state, PA? What names?

You say the Rhineers came from Michigan to PA, you believe, and before that they came up the Mississippi - from where?

And what is the name of your gg-grandfather, the one who married Miss Rinear?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Susan

Rinear? Rhinear? Rhyneer?

Don't know. My gggrandmother was Miriam Rhinear (spelling not yet standardized, it appears) who was born July 19, 1856. Her mother was Emeline____, father's name unknown so far. Sister Sarah probably born circa 1850. I need to do more primary source research on this line - obviously.
All the above lived in Philadelphia as adults. However, I have come across traces of two other Miriam Rhinears - one a baby born 1854 to Alexander Rhinear and his wife Mary (I believe) then living in Princeton Township, Mercer Co., NJ. The other was a generation earlier, a Miriam Rhinear who married and had children in Trenton, NJ. Given that Miriam is an unusual name, I think it is likely that my gggram and the first were cousins, the second may have been an aunt, sister to Alexander. However, this hypothesis is unproven todate.

What was the timeframe for your Elwood and Sarah? circa 1900?

Rinear

I know what you mean. I got up the initiative to go to the National Archives yesterday and try to find Emeline and Miriam in the Pennsylvania census. I had gotten a hold of Miriam's death certificate recently, and it listed her mother as "Emeline Rinear" and her father as "not known." Well the information was given by one of Miriam's sons when she died at 87, so it could mean HE didn't know her father's name. However, it could also mean she didn't know herself, perhaps she was illegimate.

So anyway I trooped off to the Archives, and I found Emeline, age 27, and her daughter "Marriam", 5, in the 1860 census...living in a boarding house in Philadelphia. In 1870, they lived in a dwelling together by themselves, with Emeline, 36, "keeping house". No spouse, no visible means of support. Hmm...

This information has given me an approximate birthdate of 1833-4 for Emeline, although whether her name at birth was Emeline Rinear or Emeline ________ who married _____Rinear I don't know.

Also, FYI, no daughter Sarah for her. I had thought Sarah must be another daughter of Emeline's, as Em purchased a burial plot circa 1870 at Fernwood Cemetary outside Philadelphia. No one in the family was buried in the plot there for another 40 some years; the plot appears to have been purchased by Emeline for the express purpose of burying Sarah. It seems likely Sarah was a close relation, but specifically what remains unclear.

I'm not sure quite where to go from hear, but I may try to get Sarah's death certificate.
