I am writing an article on these Wheelers. I know that Samuel Wheeler was married to Elizabeth (Cooke) Ringold by 1674, if not in 1672- am working on that. They may have been parents of a daughter Elizabeth. And Samuel did marry later an Ann ____, but she was not Ann Nash (one of many errors I've found), by 1688. It is not yet clear if it was this Ann or his former wife Elizabeth who was the mother of his definitely proven daughter Susanna who was underage in 1694. Samuel married again for the third time later on, but had no issue.

Maryland Ringgolds

I'm looking for some definitive research on the Ringgolds from Kent County, Maryland. Starting with Thomas Ringgold, and down, I've found more than one source online that has various lines and generations mixed up (it would help if the Ringgolds would name their sons something other than Thomas, William, and Samuel, eh?).

Mildred Cook Schoch wrote a book entitled "Ringgold in the United States". Does anyone know of where I could find a copy of this online? I'm hoping to clarify a few connections, rather than rely on the faulty postings I've been working with to date.

Of particular interest to me is the line that follows:

James R Ringgold (1704-1740) m. (1) Carroll, m. (2) Mary Lowery (b.1715) 2 Dec 1726 in St. Paul's, Chestertown.

of marriage (2) there are 6 children, one is William Ringgold (1729-1790) who m. Rebecca Brown (1730-1790) 1741.

of that marriage, there are 8 children, one is Martha Ringgold, who m. (1) Edward Ringgold (1760-1854) and (2) William Ringgold.

of marriage (1) there are 6 children, one is Martha Elizabeth Ringgold (1814-1843), who m. John Holliday Cummins (1810-1884). Martha and John are both buried in Olivet Cemetery, Galena. When Martha died, John remarried to Rebecca B. Ringgold, who is mentioned further.

of the marriage of William Ringgold and Rebecca Brown, there was also a child named William Thomas Ringgold (1770-1816). He married (1) Martha Truman (1770-) 10 Jun 1797 in Kent County. He married (2) Sophia ? (1770-), and had 5 children by this marriage.

Of that marriage, one child was Thomas Ringgold (1799-). He married Rebecca Bolton, and had 3 children.

One of those children was Rebecca B. Ringgold (1818-1883), the second wife of John Holliday Cummins, and also buried in Olivet Cemetery in Galena.

As you may be able to tell, I'm a direct descendant of that Cummins/Ringgold connection. While I have a great deal of information on John Holliday Cummins and Rebecca B. Ringgold, I have very little verifiable information on the Ringgold parents from either marriage, or either lineage.

If you have any good sources, I would appreciate a link, or a little help with lookups, if you have some time.

Thank you.

Hi
I have a pdf copy of the book by Mrs Schoch but I know for a fact that there are errors in this book. She corresponded with my father a number of years ago and bascially said the information on our line of ringgolds was probably not correct but it was published anyway.
And you are absolutely right about the naming, James was a common one that really causes many problems.
Let me know if you want a copy.
Tom

Hi, I am doing research on the Ringgold family. My daughter-in-law is a direct desendent of Thomas Ringgold.
I have the family going from 1650 to 1854 when all the male Ringgolds on my line pass away. There are many Ringgolds all over Maryland, Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. General Samuel Ringgold of Frederick Co. was the brother of Tench Ringgold who is our or my D-I-L direct line.

If any of this makes sence or fits in or you need more info feel free to get in touch.

Ken Diepold
3816 Mt Olney Lane
Olney , Md 20832

301-774-2137

kcharles32@gmail.com

Hello,

I received your message. Considering your surname, I am assuming that you are Caucasian. I am a black american. My grandfather's father was a caucasian man, his mother a slave (so I've been told). My grandfather was born in Baltimore, MD and raised by his father's family in Lancaster PA. They are said to be PA Dutch. I have been unable to find much about them because there is no one left on that side of the family that knows anything about them. I have lost contact with my cousins who lived in Baltimore. They were considerably older than I and have most likely passed on by now. The last contact I had was in 1985. There are distant cousins liviing in the Princess Ann area of MD, but I have no way of contacting them. As I continue my research, I will keep in contact with you if you agree. Maybe I might find something helpful to you and you might find something helpfu to me.

There is little info on Ludwell Elston Ringold in the Ringo Family History. It appears that he used only one G. Our records do reflect he married Lena Simpson, b. 7- -1878.
That You for the reply. That filled in a few blanks, although I'm getting a long way out on this family tree branch! Ha. Ha.
I talked with one person who, as a child, knew Ludwell when Ludwell was the night-marshall of the town of Macksville. Ludwell had a noticeable limp - must have had a wooden leg -he could be heard walking along the wooden-board sidewalks along the store fronts late at night due to the tap-tap of the leg.
On the tombstone his name is recorded as Ringgold (2 g's). Did William use just ones 'g'?

Ringo/Ringold/Ringgold

The Ringo Family History Series, in 14 volumes was published in 1984, with Vol 14 added in 2001. Most people with the Ringo name are descended from Philip Janszen Ringo who came to America in 1640 aboard his ship the LaGarce (The Wench) from Vlissengen, Zeeland, Netherlands and settled in New Amsterdam at the corner of what is now Broad and Exchange St in New York from 1650 to 1701. Some Ringo descendants changed their name to Ringold or Ringgold, not to be confused with the Ringgold family that settled in Virginia in the 1700's from England. I have a complete copy of the Ringo family History Series reflecting the history of the Ringo family in Europe back to 988 to the town of Ghent, Belgium and genealogy in America back to 1640, I would be happy to respond to anyone seeking information on the Ringo family

The press back in 1882 got it wrong. Johnny Ringo the gunfighter did die of self inflected gunshot. John Peters Ringo was born 5-3-1850 the son of Martin Ringo and Mary Peters. They had 5 children. Johnny's father was accidently killed near Deer Creek, Wy on 7-30-1864 on the Oregon Trail. Mary and the 5 children continued on to San Jose, Ca where their daughters, Fannyt, Mary and Mattie bacame school teachers. Johnny and his brother Martin Albert Ringo left home and went to Texas where they got involved in the Texas HooDoo cattle war. Johnny killed 3 men and had to leave Texas. Johnny ended up in Tombstone, Az, where he went into the cattle business.(sort of). He would steal cows in Mexico and bring them to Tomstone to sell meat to the minors. John Peters Ringo is in volume V, of the Ringo Family History Series.
a

There a lot of confusion on the Ringo/Ringold/Ringgold lines. What caused my attention was the Harrison name. John Ringo, b. 5-28-1761. m. Nancy Ann Harrison in Va. dau of George W. Harrison and ____ Cadwaller. Family tradition says that Nancy was of Scotch descent from the branch of the Harrison family, which produced the president of that name. to further confuse things, the Ringgold family from England were very successful in Va, where John Ringo and Nancy Ann were married. Due to the Ringgold family fame, many of us Ringo's ended up with the Ringold/Ringgold spelling of our name.

Thank you--different guy though. I had been relying on this name from a distant relatives family tree and was getting stumped. I suspect he may have the name wrong. The Harrison J Ringgold (found a number of records for him in Arkansas) I am looking for parents for may actually be Joseph Harrison. I found an awful lot of errors in family trees, ie grandchildren born before their grandparents etc.

Thank you for the reply. I asked my mother about the names that you mentioned. She said that she was not that familiar with the names that you gave. My grandfather was named James Levi Ringgold. He was born in Chestertown, MD. As far as I know, he had a brother named, John. His other siblings were named Brown. They all lived in MD with the exception of John. I believe that he lived in Lancaster, Pa. I am sorry that I have no other information for you. I hope that maybe we might be able to help one another.

Karen

Thanks to you.It was my grandfather that was born in Chestertown. He was born on July27, 1877. He left Chestertown at a very early age and moved to PA. His sister lived in Baltimore. I do believe that she was born in Chestertown, but moved to Baltimore. That is where she died. She died in the late 1960's.

Dear Mary Stewart,

Thankyou thankyou. I believe my William Henry is the one mentioned on page 101 of the book. Is the author's last name Shockley instead of what you mentioned?

I feel quite certain that my grandfather was born in Liverpool because I have a photo of an infant in what seems like a christening dress. The photo was taken in Liverpool and the child looks like other pics of my grandfather.

i have not yet written social security for my fathers application so i don't know anything else, not even my grandmothers name for sure. i believe her last name was Soderholm.

For the short term, I'm going to guess at WHR birth and death dates based on my memory.Lets try death at around 1950 and birth at around 1870.

Do you own this Ringgold book? Is it available in a library? What is your connection to the Ringgold? I live in Maryland. Thanks

In a will supposedly by him dated/proved in 1776 he leaves items to his mother and wife (unnamed) and 3 sons Thomas, Samuel, and Benjamin, and to his daughter Anna Maria. Others in his will include Thomas Ringgold Tilghman, JOhn Calloway, Wm. Hamsley Jr., some cousins and brother and sister-in-law Benja. and Anne Calloway/Galloway. It is witnedssed by a Jos.
The Illinois Sec't of State has on his website several helpful databases for researchers, including an index of death certificates for 1916 to 1950. I found eight (8) RINGGOLDs listed at this link:

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrc...

RINGGOLD EDDIE M/N UNK 0038677 1947-12-26 COOK CHICAGO - -

RINGGOLD EMMA F/N UNK 6004212 1935-02-10 COOK CHICAGO 35-02-11

RINGGOLD GEORGIANA F F/W UNK 0810041 1926-01-16 ROCK ISLAND MILAN 26-01-17

RINGGOLD HAWORTH B M/W UNK 6007556 1936-03-10 COOK CHICAGO 36-03-11

RINGGOLD JAMES M/N Y-52 0008655 1941-03-22 COOK CHICAGO - -

RINGGOLD JULIAN F/N UNK 0001535 1945-01-18 JACKSON CARBONDALE - -

RINGGOLD MARTHA F/N UNK 6000825 1924-01-09 COOK CHICAGO 24-01-11

RINGGOLD OTHLIA J F/N UNK 6013179 1934-05-07 COOK CHICAGO 34-05-09

If you find websites with RINGGOLD data, please share it here to help other family historians.

All my info comes from the Ringo Family History series, the SS Death Index, and from chasing these folks around the country through census records. According to those sources, Lena SIMPSON was born 7/1878 in KS. Their daughter Merna was born 10/1899 in OK. Effie M. O'DELL was born 9/22/1886 in MO and died 2/15/1967 in Stafford Co. KS; her first husband was Dale L. SOWERS b. 12/1885 in MO, m. ca. 1909 in MO, d. between 1910-1920.

Thank You for your response. If I might, I can give you a little more information:
A. Effie's first husband's name was Elmer. He deserted Effie when their only child, Wayne, was only about 6 years of age. I finally located him in southern Texas where he was working as a guide on a deep sea fishing boat.
B. Merna married a man by the name of Henry Greenwood. They moved to California.
C. Lena, Ludwig and Effie are buried in adjacent graves in the Macksville cemtery. Ludwig purchased a real nice tombstone for Lena. Effie purchased a real nice tombstone for Ludwig. When Effie died, all family had moved away. Her estate showed she was nearly destitute. She lies in an un-marked grave. Effie died on February 23, 1967.
Thank you so much for your response.
We do have a little difference of records.
There first child you note as Franklin. I have Francis. This also agrees with the census records, which sometimes is not too accurate.
Della was definitely older than Ludwell. She was born in the early part of 1877. She is noted to be 4 years of age on the 1880 census while Ludwell was noted to be 1 year of age. They were living in Nebraska at that time.
Albert must have had an itchy foot!
Thanks again for the response.
Incidently, Ludwell is buried in the cemetery at Macksville, Kansas.
Looking for information on L. E. Ringgold, dob Aug 02, 1878 - dod July 16, 1960. I believe he was born in Nebraska, although his burial memorial indicates that he was born in Cooks Station, Missouri.
His first wife was Lena. What was her maiden name?
L. E. and Lena had one child, a daughter. What was her name? Whom did she marry?
Following Lena's death, L. E. married Effie O'Dell Sowers. L. E., Lena and Effie are all buried in Macksville, Kansas.
