She is my grandmother and I have been looking for information for over 10 years. The problem lies in the fact that that is the only information I have. Her name. Her name appeared on my mother's Social Security application and my mothers marriage in the catholic church in 1942.
I have looked on the census from 1880 to 1910. No one fits. My mother was born in 1910 (supposedly) and my grandmother was supposed to have died in 1913 in California. No info there either.
Can anyone help me break down this brick wall.
Thank you

I don't follow where Barton came from, but I have a 1st cousin twice removed: William G. Ripley who lived in Dumont, NJ. He was a tug boat captian and was born in Corning NY [18 miles west of Elmira] 17 Jun 1864. His wife was Emma C. Eldridge and her mother died in 1919.

Close but no cigar!

Mrs. W. Ripley, Dumont, New Jersey

I now own a 1909 post card addressed to Mrs. W. Ripley, Dumont New Jersey.

Re: Post card titled "Western Avenue, Aspinwall" (see white lettering in lower right of street.)
Back: green one-cent stamp with cancel: "SHARPSBURG PA. JUN 5 19 09 10- AM" and a line-drawn waving flag of 7 lines making 6 clear bars, and field with vertical stars: 3-2-3-2-3, for total of 13 stars.

On right half is handwritten address: "Mrs. W. Ripley, Dumont, New Jersey"; and on left half is message: "Dear Friend Just a line I rec Your postel telling me of the death of your dear Mother I can feel sorry for you for I have lost mine hope you are feeling better I am not feeling well at all I am going to Elmira the last of this month Will let you know love to all Barb"

In the 1910 census is found at #111 River Ave in Aspinwall: a family named BARTON, and living there is daughter-in-law Barbara, whose mother was born in New York. She is one of only two Barb*s in town in 1910.
Barton, Alexander J; Head; Male; White; 57; b. abt 1853; Married; b. PA; father b. PA; mother b. PA
Barton, Isabel F; Wife; Female; White; 53; abt 1857; Married; PA; Scotland; Scotland
Barton, Harry E; Son; Male; White; 24; abt 1886; Single; PA; PA; PA
Barton; Paul C; Son; Male; White; 28; abt 1882; Married; PA; PA; PA
Barton, Barbara E; Daughter-in-law; Female; White; 26; abt 1884; Married; PA; PA; New York

In an attempt to discover who sent the postcard, one must, first of all, remember that THE post office for Aspinwall WAS/IS in “Sharpsburg.” Does this mean “Barb” was from Aspinwall? Not necessarily, but it stands to reason few others would send a post card showing Western Avenue, though it’s possible this photo was taken because of the turreted, large home shown 3rd from right. This building, torn down in the [70s? 80s?] was replaced by an apartment building; but, as I understand it, originally that home was owned (built?) by the Pennsylvania Railroad; and at least in 1936 the “Pennsylvania State Highway Patrol” rented the portion that fronted on First Street. Their address was 103 First Street.

I have no interest in the RIPLEY family. My interest is the photograph, and the persons who lived on Western Avenue, as I did.

If you're interested in this, please contact Cari directly at western37-at-cox-dot-net PLEASE put 37 Western Ave in the subject line.

I am doing research for a friend who descends from Ambrose and Margaret's daughter, Margaret (married Joseph Barker). Is anyone certain that Margaret/Catherine are the same person? I was wondering if Margaret perhaps passed away, Ambrose married Catherine, then we he died, she took the children from his first marriage as well. Death certificates of a couple of the children indicate that Catherine's maiden name was Bailey - I have seen several postings online that say Margaret's name was Wilson, although no one has given a source for that.

I would be very interested in a copy of the Susannah Ripley Tice article if you would be willing to share!

I saw that on the confederate muster rolls the name was spelled sometimes with a "C" and sometimes with a "K". I surmise that most if not all of the family men were illiterate at that time as their signatures on various documents were reflected as "X"-his mark. That would leave it up to whoever was recording the information to spell the name out as to the best they could.

You are so correct. I have pictures of Addie's and Edith's grave in Lowell. When I go back by Hope Cem in the Fall I will get a picture of Herberts grave. Funny that my great grandfather is buried in Hope cem. too.

You said Calvin and Sarah are buried in Walpole MA. Are you sure about that as I have some letters saying she is in Walpole NH. If you know the Cem. they are buried in I would go by and get pictures there too. Thanks for all the info.

Did you ever know about the Ripley CD that use to be available? I would be interested in a copy.

I descend from William RIPLEY of West Bridgewater, MA, through his son Jonathan and then Perez. I believe Mom told me that Perez' Bible made its way to her mother's 1st cousin, Hilda HEMPL, wife (for a while) of naturalist Edmund HELLER. I suspect this Bible may have ended up with Hilda's nephew Russell HILL. I have a related RIPLEY Bible and am happy to share.

Joshua Ripley Johnson, 1830-1902

I have finally broken through a brickwall that has plagued our family for over 60 years. I found the proof that Joshua Ripley Johnson was my g-grandmothers father. We were in Chetopa, Labette, KS this weekend to try and find him and to get that proof and we certainly did!!

Chetopa Advance
Thu 10 Apr 1903, pg col

Joshua Ripley Johnson was born in Gallia county, Ohio, May 7 1830, and and died in Chetopa, April 4, 1903, at the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Shultz. He was raised in Ohio, and at the age of twenty, moved to Cedar county, Iowa, where, shortly afterwards, he married Miss Lucinda Kelly. To this union was born six children, two only surviving Mr. Johnson--Steve Johnson, living in Chetopa and Mrs. Mary Tally, of Chitwood, Mo., his wife dying when the children were small. He came to Chetopa in 1879, where he married Mrs. Sarah Seals, a widow with four daughters and one son-- S. B. Seals, Parsons; Mrs. D. P. Boon, Mrs. Susie Lancaster, Mrs. Lizzie Ventel and Mrs. Shultz. With the exception of four years in Baxter Springs, Mr. Johnson has lived in Chetopa. During his last sickness, which lasted over six months, he gave his heart to God, and passed quietly away, trusting fully in Jesus Christ, the savior of all mankind; and Sunday afternoon he was intered in Oakhill cemetery, Rev. Jas. H. Harvey conducting the services.

A precious one from us is gone.
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.

We loved him,
Yes we loved him,
But angels loved him more,
And they have sweetly called him
to yonder shining shore.

We desire to thank the friends and neighbors for their kindness and assistance during the sickness and death of our beloved husband and father.
Mrs. J. R. Johnson
And Children
Herbert had a brother Edward Everett Ripley and he is my great grandfather who had Philip Sidney Ripley, my grand father on my mothers side. This is great! I have pictures of the graves of some of the ripleys and am always looking for more. My brother lives in East Longmeadow MA and I go back a couple times a year and do genealogy research and take pictures. Edward E Ripley is buried in Hope Cem. in Worcester MA. Joseph Bellows is in Lowell MA in School St. Cem. I have death cards on him. Do you know where Calvin is buried? I would like Herberts info on birth, marriage, death and where he is buried too. Philip Sidney Ripley had two children, my mother, Ruth Ripley and Philip Clinton Ripley. Both are now deceased. Ruth had 3 children, Veronica, LeRoy, Philip Butler. Philip had 5 children 4 girls and one boy. Thanks so much for getting back to me.

Veronica Wood
My grandmother (Ethel Ripley Tyrrell) is buried in Westford Cemetery just outside Lowell.
Her mother (Addie Manahan Ripley) is buried in Lowell Cemetery in the Manahan plot. Also buried there is her maiden daughter, Edith Ripley.
Addie's husband, Herbert Bellows Ripley, is buried in Hope Cemetery in Worcester. Its is with his father that our lines may intersect as that was Joseph Bellows Ripley, son of Calvin Ripley who was the son of Charles Ripley, who was the son of Jeremiah Ripley who was the son of John Ripley.
