Ah, that wasn't my grandfather. He escaped to Peru and never went to jail. Some of my family did, but I believe that of my grandfather's five siblings, none of them did. The husband of his sister did go to jail but I am unclear as to why. I can ask him tomorrow and see if it's the same person. But if it is, he wasn't a Rivero, he was Sosa. Are you related to the Rivero-Hernandez, the owners of the newspaper??

Someone in a previous thread had referred to my grandfather's problems with Castro as a "slap in the face." I don't think it was actually my wording. But it just refers to the ongoing problems between Castro as the emerging dictator and my grandfather's daily opposition on the front page of the Diario de la Marina. He ended up being run out of the country by daily threats to his family.

What did your father mention to you?

I had two Grand uncles named del Rivero who went to California around 1840 for the gold rush. One stayed in California and the other went to Mexico. I would like to contact their descendants. My grandfather's name was Salvadore Matias del Rivero and my father's name was Jose Antonio Rivero.

The Department of Defense announced today that Cpl. John T. Rivero, 23, of Tampa, Fla., was killed April 17 in Kuwait. Rivero died from injuries sustained when his HMMWV turned over.

Rivero was assigned to C Company, 2nd Battalion, 124th Infantry Division, Eustis, Fla.

I am looking for any info on Ramon Rivero born in Santander Spain. His wife was Maria Bellido and they married in 1834 in Santander. Ramon's parents was Jose de Rivero and Josefa Garcia and they married in 1810 in Santander. Jose's parents were Ignacio Rivero and Vicenta Suballe/Suvalle again all from Santander Spain.

Her husband, Clemente Chavez was also born in Mexico.
Their children are:

3. Clemente Chavez born about 1927 in Calif.
4. Olaya Chavez born 1928 El Paso, TX
5. Arturo Chavez born 1930 El Paso, TX

Very cool! I am 37. So looks like we're some kind of cousins(?) Since my father had no siblings and my mother has one brother who had no kids, I don't know of any cousins. Very exciting!!Yeah I've scene pictures of Pepin and he was a hotty! I'd kill to have blue eyes in my line.. We got the boring brown eyes and black hair. Could be worse!! Was you're granfather called Bebito. My mom seems to remember that one of Pepins kids was called Bebito. My mother has probably met your grandfather. Did you say that your grandad use to visit Colin & Raquel when visiting DC? Weird! They lived in Georgetown. We all still live in the DC metro area which is really weird cause it seems like we should live in Miami (which I love to visit) I'm actually planning a girls trip to South Beach at the end of the month. Hope it will be nice weather.It's been super cold here. Yuk... Look forward to hearing from you!

Was your grandfather the son of Pepin Rivero? I think that would make us the same generation? My grandfather was the son of Nicolas II who was Pepin's brother. Have also heard from my mom that Pepin was suppose to be very good looking! Looks like you may be from the good looking line of the Riveros!! We weren't so blessed!!! I also sent another e-mail about a great photo that has the Conde with all his kids and his first grandkid. Will try to scan and send electronically.

I am realted by the Conde Rivero. He was my great great grandfather. My great grandfather was Nicolas the II who had 2 sons, Nicolas III (Colin) and Pedro. My father is Nicolas IV only child of Nicolas III and I am the youngest daughter of Nicolas IV who sadly had no sons.

Hello! I am Nicole Rivero (now married to a gringo so I go by Nicole Womach!!) I am the great great grandaughter of the Conde Rivero. Pepin was my great granfdather's brother. I have great photo of the Conde Rivero with his sons & daughters and at that point his only grandson Nicolas Rivero III (who was my grandfather). Very cool photo. I will try to get it on a disk and send it via e-mail. So my dad was Nicolas IV who had 3 girls and I am Nicole closest thing to Nicolas! Sounds like we may be related!

Hi. No I don't know who Josefinas ( my great grandmother) were, well I don;t have their names, but I also believe that Josefina and Pepin and Nicolas, were 1st cousins, ( children of 2 brothers) I understand my great grandmother was an only child. Her son Aquilino, nickname Nicki (my grandfather) was also and only child, his father (Suarez) died before he was born, Josefina never remarried, but her family, the Riveros, were the ones that helped her out, and she was definatly related to the person holding title of Conde, since I knew about this since I was little. Si we are definatly on the right track.

Hi. I don't recall reading your message from 2001, I think Ginny Pannier told me, but I forgot. My grandfather was a cousin of Pepin and Nicolas, and the others, although my father remembers him talking about only Pepin and Nicolas.

Always very interesting to see "updates" on the Rivero family. I am Nicole Rivero, the youngest daughter of Nicolas Rivero IV. My great great grandfather was Conde Nicolas Rivero. My father was never interested in the title so I have heard that another Rivero relative (not in the true line of Riveros) in Miami has had the title passed to him.
Be nice if we could go to Cuba someday!!

It would be great to share info. Actually, I am going to call my
great aunt Beatrice today or tommorow for more info. Have you gotten a hold of John. The info he has on John Paneto's
date of death is wrong as of a couple of days ago. I have a picture of his grave stone and it say Dec 26 1975. The date John has is Dec 21 1967. But I am sure that is the reason you were trying to get a hold of him. If you haven't already you may want to look at the HIbbard family tree, but some of the dates on it from my side of the family are incorrect based on pictures of gravestones that I have.

I do have a couple of pictures that Jeova had sent me.
One is of her Dad Ovid and her Mom sitting with a grandchild the other of her as a young lady.

4. I'd like to verify what you wrote in the posting where you were discussing the Silvia who purchased the title.
Your grandfather's sister Silvia (Silvitica) Rivero Hernandez married Eugenio Sosa Chabau. Their child Silvia de Sosa Rivero (deceased) married Alberto Jorge. The Jorges bought the title. Their child would be Silvia Jorge de Sosa but you have her listed as Silvia Jorge Rivero. Did she change her name or do I have too many Silvia's? Silvia Jorge Rivero/Silvia Jorge de Sosa and her father Alberto Jorge currently own the tiltle.

From postings by others, I'd like to verify this information about your branch of the family.
5. Are your grandfather's siblings Silvia (discussed above), Oscar, Nicolas and Alberto Rivero Hernandez? I believe you said they were all deceased.

6. Do you know if Oscar Rivero Hernandez had a son named Oscar, who hsd a son named Nicolas from Miami who went to study in Boston a couple of years ago? I think I may have one extra Oscar?

7. Does Nicolas Rivero Hernandez have a daughter named Silvie?

The earliest ancesters that I have on your tree are:
Francisco del Rivero (b.1790 d.?) married Josefa Fernandez and had the following children:
Felipe (descendants unknown), Tomas (descendants unknown), Nicolas (priest) and Jose del Rivero Fernandez.

Jose del Rivero Fernandez married Teresa Muñiz Cueli and had the following children:
Nicolas (the first el conde), Celestino (priest), Elias (descendants unknown), Lucia (nun), Maria (nun) and Ignacia Rivero Muñiz (descendants unknown).

El conde Nicolas del Rivero Muñiz married Herminia Alonso Aguilar after his frist wife Teresa Garcia Ciaño Canto died, I believe childless. Nicolas and Herminia had the following 9 children:
Herminia (b. abt 1886- d.?, descendants unknown), Maria Teresa (b. abt 1887 d.?, descendants unknown), Maria Luisa (b.abt 1888 d.?), Duce Maria (b. abt 1889 d.?, descendants unknown), Carlos (b. abt 1890 d.1966), Ignacio (b. abt 1891 d. 1966), Felipe (b. abt 1892 d.?), Nicolas II (b. abt 1894 d.?), and Jose Ignacio (Pepin, b. 1894 d. 1944) Rivero Alonso.

1. In a posting you stated that Nicolas II and Pepin Rivero Alonso were the oldest male children. Do you or your grandfather know their exact bith and death dates for the 9 siblings? I've always thought it odd that Nicolas and Pepin aren't listed as the oldest sons.
2. Does you or your grandfather know which of his aunts was named Chi-Chi? I'm just curious.
3. In a posting you stated you thought Jose Maria Rivero (whose son was Jesus Rivero Saavedra) was one of Nicolas's sons. Could Nicolas I have had 10 children? If so Jose Maria Rivero would have been your grandfather's uncle. Or does this Jose Maria Rivero fit in somewhere else?

I have been tracing the family tree of el conde Nicolas del Rivero Muñiz for several years and have recently updated my web based on your postings. The site is at http://homepage.mac.com/pannier/rivero/index.html . I strive not to post information on living relatives and to include sources of my information. My information primarily comes from "Historia de las Familias Cubanas" (http://homepage.mac.com/pannier/rivero/historia1.html ), LDS Church records that were submitted by church members, and ancestry.com message boards.

My family history is that one of my ancestors was the first el conde's second cousin. My great great grandmother was Ramona Rivero who married Manuel Menendez. Ramona had a sister Placida Rivero who married Francisco Garcia. Do you or your grandfather know how Ramona and Placida link to el conde's tree? Graciela Suarez-Rivero is trying to link her great grandmother Josefina Rivero Orrio (married to Aquilino Suarez-Ablanedo) to the second conde Nicolas and Jose Ignacio {Pepin) Rivero Alonso. It is believed they were Josefina's cousins. Do you or your grandfather know how Josefina links to Nicolas II and Pepin?
