Esther Allen's 2d husband was William Argeland Shirley. For more on the Shirley line of descent, see the following sites:

http://www.shirleyassociation.com/NewShirleySite/NonMembers/...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shirleys/d...

Argeland Shirley is individual #34 in the first reference. The children of William Roach and Esther Allen are listed as "Fielden, Sarah, Betsey, Anna, Lucinda and Peggy Roach."

I have a slip of paper that came from the pocket of an 1866 pocket diary belonging to Galen McGregor Goode (b. 07/04/1842). On this paper appears, in pencil, the following list:

Elizabeth Roach married Davis
Gracy Roach married Smith
Hety (Esther) Roach married Cobb
Annie Roach married Elijah Perry
Sarah Roach married Robt. Musick
Lucinda Roach married Holdbrooks
Margret Roach married Holdbrooks

On the reverse of this slip appear the words "Malinda Roach."

The other materials in the diary pocket date from the late 1860s, so there's some chance that this information was set down about the same time. The diary has been in storage at least since Rev. Goode's death in 1927.

I hope this helps you.

To all of you researching Miles and Two Quail. I have a photo of Martha "Patsy" aka Two Quail, a picture of Miles, and pictures of Miles' burial place. I can also provide a snail mail copy of Jeremiah's will. I have already sent these to Dayle and Diane. Anyone that wants copies should email me right away at bjrb at hotmail.com. Use subject line Miles Roach, or I might not open your request.

After next week, I am going to delete these photos from my computer.

I believe that Jeremiah was the son of Littleberry Roach that was in NC and moved to SC, and that Miles is of the Jeremiah Roach line. Until a couple of years ago, it was thought Littleberry was a brother to my 5th g-grandfather, but that does not appear to be the case.

Betty Roach Braune
Austin TX

Here is what I wrote on the other bulletin board in response to Mary's concerns that the George Roach who married Mary Ann Thompson was not the son of Isaac Brooks Roach:

Mary, I think you may be on to something here. I checked my records on George W. Roach, son of Isaac Roach. I have that his wife was Mary Ann Thompson. Clinch Co. Ga. marriage records say that George Roach married Mary Ann Thompson there, but as you say, there is nothing to connect that George with Isaac Brooks Roach of Floyd Co., Ga. I checked a map and Lowndes County is an awfully long way from Floyd County. I can think of no reason why Isaac's son might be there. I wondered if I could trace George and Mary in later censuses. No luck with them, but there was a George Roach in the 1900 census of Chatooga Co., Ga. Chatooga Co. is a lot closer to Floyd Co. than Lowndes County. This George had a wife named Martha J., but also two daughters named Florence and Sallie (and a son named Guilford, among other children). Isaac's son George W. Roach had sisters named Florence and Sallie (I am descended from Sallie). The census record said that George was born in Ga. and that his parents were born in Georgia and Illinois, but that does not match what I know about George's parents. I looked for George and Martha in an earlier census and found George W. Roach (note the W.) and Marth J. in the Cherokee Co. AL census of 1880. George W. and Martha had a son named Guilford (just like the ones that lived in Chatooga Co. Ga in 1900). Also, in this census it was stated that George W. was born in Georgia and that his father was born in Tennessee and his mother was born in NC. There is some debate about whether Isaac's son was born in GA or TN, but there is a census record that shows that Isaac was born in TN and I have evidence that Isaac's wife Lucinda was indeed born in NC. I can't find George and Martha in any 1870 census. If the 1900 census is correct, they were married in 1867 and they lived for some time in TN, then AL, then finally in GA. Martha J. was from Va., so maybe they were there in 1870.

This George who was married to Martha J. seems a better candidate to be Isaac's son than the one who married Mary Ann Thompson in Clinch Co. Ga, at least to me. More evidence is needed, but I am now leaning towards the idea that the George in Clinch co. is NOT the son of Isaac Brooks Roach. Who could he be? I don't know. Thomas Roach, whom we believe to be Isaac's brother, also had a son named George. This George was born about 1839, so he may be too old to be Clinch Co. George. Clinch Co. George could be someone altogether different. But I would like to see more evidence tying the George of Clinch Co. to Floyd County before accepting that they are one and the same.

What do you think?

Charlene
My gg-grandfather was John Jean Roach, born 1832 in County Cork, Ireland. He came to America and died in Oconto County, Wisconsin on 17 Jan 1862 of sickness or wounds incurred after enlisting in the Army during the Civil War. John's parents were Frank Roach and Maria(?) John married Francis Brabzeon (sp?) and they had 3 daughters: Mary Ann, Sara and Helen. I don't know much more about them yet, as they are from my father's side of the family, which I have just recently found. Possibly my John is related to yours?

Brian Hetrick
cocheaptrick@yahoo.com

I am looking for information on my ggg-grandfather, John J. Roach who was born in County Cork, Ireland June 24, 1831 to Patrick Roach, mother unknown. He married Anna (Annie) Connelly and had 4 known children; Julia Anna born 1866 in Illinois, John born ca. 1868 in Illinois, Mary born ca. 1872 in Ohio, and James born ca. 1873 probably in Indiana. I am not sure when John came over to the United States but he lived in Allen County, Indiana for over 21 years. John died in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana March 16, 1906 and is buried in Monroeville, Allen County, Indiana. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Bill,
Just a few other notes that I have to add. While online posters report that Elizabeth, widow of Joshua Roach, later married Francis Thompson, that would not seem to be on target. Given that I suspect this couple did make move in to Alabama, that may be significant for you.
Francis N. Thompson did marry Mrs Elizabeth Roach, May 27, 1812 Charlotte VA. It would not seem that the widow of Joshua was married given her entry in the John Roach Will (1816).
Also, I did find evidence of another Elijah/Elisha Roach in Charlotte earlier. Unfortunately, no one named to have married a Prucilla. This Elisha Roach married Barbara Tenor in 1803 Charlotte VA. I've heard no one talk about this couple.
Robin

Bill,
I'm pasting notes I have from Pittsylvania VA in the evident that we might ultimately conclude that Burdett Price Roach is more likely the son Price.
Robin

Elijah Roach married Wilmoth Owen 31 Aug 1830. The 1830 census was by order to be transcribed in the summer of 1830, completed by August 1. Presuming that Elijah was still at home, the following Roach families appear on the 1830 Pittsylvania census:

James Roach
1 male 10 - 15
1 male 15 - 20
2 males 20 - 30
1 male 60 - 70
2 females 10 - 15
1 female 20 - 30
1 female 50 - 60

Burdett Roach
1 male 15 - 20
2 males 20 - 30
1 male 60 - 70
1 female 15 - 20
1 female 60 - 70

It is impossible at this time to compare the 1820 HHs of these two men as Burdett/Burdell Price Roach is located on the ‘missing pages’ index for 1820 Pittsylvania County. I am not sure how to obtain entries for those pages:

Pittsylvania County, Page 63 Adams, James Bennett, Stephen Botner, John Brumfield, William Camp, George Dalton, Joseph Dellum, Alexander Dodson, William E. Tally, Peyton Thurman, Nathan Walton, Thomas Watson, John, Jr.

Two other Roach families are present on 1820 Pittsylvania census:
James “Rosch” noted as Roach on inspection 211201/11101
Thos Roach 110100/00101

Both James and Burdett/Burdell/Burdatt Price Roach are noted on the rev war pension lists for Pittsylvania County VA. From indexes it is known that Burdett was dead by 1839; Elizabeth of Burdell P. by 1849. Mary of James continued to receive pension at least through 1862.

In 1840 Pittsylvania VA census, James Roach is still present and is also noted on that census as a veteran. Two Roach families are present on the 1840 census:
James Roach
2 males 20 - 30
1 male 30 - 40
1 male 70 - 80
1 female 20 - 30
1 female 30 - 40
1 female 60 - 70

Henry Roach
2 males 5 - 10
2 males 30 - 40
1 male 40 - 50
1 female 70 - 80
Based on the rev war pensions this would appear to be survivors of the Burdett Price Roach family.

James Roach married Mary Berrot 30 Jul 1792 Pittsylvania; Berdat Roach married Elizabeth Mitchell in this same time period in Pittsylvania County.

1850 Pittsylvania County VA Roach Entries (everyone recorded born VA):

ROACH, Joshua, 30
Polly, 86
Talitha/Salitha Mays, 30

ROACH, William, 48
Gabriel, 35
TAYLOR, Mary, 38
William, 4
Gabriel, 3
Sarah, 1
Mary, 2

ROACH, Henry, 47
Sophia, 43
Mary, 5
Elizabeth, 3
MITSHELL, Reuben (best interpretation), 75

ROACH, Joshua P, 42
Catherine, 26
Calhoun, 6
Houston, 4
Gerard, 2
HINDS, Sally, 7
ROACH, Mary, 1/12
GOSNEY, Thomas, 19
1860 Pittsylvania entries reveal William Roach, 55, in HH with Mary, 88...next door to Gabriel who has now married Sarah and their family…followed by Mary Taylor and her family (this grouping demonstrates that this family is most likely those so related).

The following have been located in other Pittsylvania County records:

Roach, Joshua, 50, widowed, son of James and Mary Roach married to Mary E. Barret, age 25, single, daughter of George and Polly Barrett 21 Sept 1867 (making it clear that the younger Joshua present in Pittsylvania County was, in fact, a son of James).

Roach, William, age 60, single, son of James and Mary Roach to Anna Colbert, age 35, single, daughter of William and Winifred Colbert 15 April 1869.

Joshua P. Roach and his wife, Catherine, are named in a land dispute in 1854 along with Mitchell and Parrish family members noted to be living in Weakly County, TN. I think Joshua P. and Henry are likely the sons of Burdett Price Roach.

Based on the evidence located to date, sons of James and Mary Roach that can be confirmed are:
William, born about 1805
Gabriel, born about 1815
Joshua, born about 1820
It is possible that Elijah is also a son based on the 1830 census if he were born about 1810. I think this is possible as the estimated age of Wilmoth Owen is 1808-1810. The naming pattern for his children is consistent with this family. Nevertheless, without further evidence, Elijah can not be ruled out as a son of Burdett Price Roach who also shows 3 sons in 1830 and only Joshua P. and Henry appearing accounted for.

OTHER NOTES

An Intimate History of the American Revolution in Pittsylvania County by Frances Hurt:
ROACH, James: born in Charlotte County VA; soldier Infantry; Bounty Land Warrant not received; Drafted in Charlotte County March 1781 at age 16 years under Captain Davenport; Marched to Racoon Ford joining Lafayette; Guarded magazine at Luisa while company marched to Jamestown; Discharged June 1781; Drafted July 1781 to Yorktown; At surrender.

Pittsylvania County Virginia Marriages 1700 - 1799 by Cecil D. McDonald Jr.:
30 Jul 1792 ROACH, James and BARROT, Mary
1795 (no day/month reported) ROACH, Burdet and MITCHELL, Elizabeth

Pittsylvania County VA Mixed Probate Records Index:
ROACH, James; Book 15, 1845 - 1847
ROACH, James; Book 16
(I will venture that James died without will and this is for estate settlement; noted as worthwhile to see if entries of these are available)

U.S. Pension List (Rev War):
ROACH, Berdat Price
Pittsylvania County
Dragoon
1st Regiment VA Cavalry
Pension started Dec 29, 1828
$100 allowance

ROACH, James
Pittsylvania County
Private
VA Militia
Pension started June 20, 1833
$20 allowance

Many report the Price Roach (married Gaines) who went into KY as the son of John Roach...I wonder if he were not a grandson rather than son. He was clearly of the Charlotte group as evidenced by marriage in 1810 but I don't know what other evidence there is to prove him a son.

Bill,
Yes, so, back to my original message on this thread. Is Burdett/Burdell Price Roach, RW veteran, the same as the so named Price Roach, son of John? If yes, he appears in both Charlotte and Pittsylvania County records.
Robin

Hello Bill,
I have not looked at Amherst County for Roach information at all. But then please note that at least a portion of the family you identify as associated with your William Davidson of Charlotte appear listed in the census transcriptions within the link I have provided on the family of Elijah White Roach.
ROACH, Prucilla, 54, VA
CODY, Mildred, 36, VA
CODY, Virginia, 11, VA
ROACH, Elisha T, 34, VA Tailor
BRIGHTWELL, Robert, 14, VA
Herein looks like the possible Elijah (Elisha) you could be seeking given his listing along with Mildred Cody.
So who was Prucilla herein listed?
Robin

Records demonstrate him as most definately an Elijah White Roach. Was there an older/other Elijah in this fold? I don't know.
Robin

Bill,
Perhaps there is some connection. I just don't see it at this point based on the evidence I have on hand.
If I am correctly reading your account, then your William Davidson stepped in when an Elijah Roach died (before 1821)?
Elijah White Roach would not seem to be one and the same. He died later.
Again, I think that the Roach family appearing in this area are likely all connected...but their recording appears to me to jump generations in some instances. I think that sons carrying some of the same names as fathers may account for some of this.
In the case of Elijah Roach who married Wilmoth Owen, his age was definately underestimated on the 1860 census (wherein he lists being born in 1820). His 1850 and 1870 entries suggest he was born at least 6-7 years earlier than this. So his time line would make him a possible candidate to be an Elijah mentioned in the records you have.
Robin

Re: Roach Family Charlotte and Pittsylvania, VA

Bill,
My research on Elijah Roach has taken me many years. I finally had a break when I realized that he had been incorrectly entered on the 1850 TN census as a NORRIS (please see my message "Is this Elijah Roach married Willette/Wilmoth Owen/s?" on this board; the family immediately before Elijah on census was a Norris and I think his entry as such was simply a transcription error). Nonetheless, I now have the records to prove that this was, in fact, Elijah Roach married Wiletta Owen/s.
I can now place all of Elijah's children and therein have found via his eldest daughter's death records that she was the daughter of "Eliga" Roach and "Wiletta" "Owens" born in VA. His son James also left a death record as the son of Elijah and Miss Owens, born VA.
Based on information provided to me, Wilmoth/Willette Owen was the daughter of Pleasant Owen and Sarah Jolly. Pleasant Owen and Sarah are said to be parents of Epaphroditis (aka Epp and Eppie), Wilmoth, and William B. Pleasant Owen. Pleasant Owen then married Elizabeth Moore and parented Pleasant James, Mary, and Lucy. I have not dug hard on the Owen information but from what I have looked up so far it seems on target.
I can't say I find an association with this particular Owen line with my Elijah Roach after his leaving the Pittsylvania
area.
Eppie Owen spent time in the Cabell area (VA/WV) as I note did Roach and Barret families; Pleasant James Owen moved out west (Saline).
In fact, the only immediately associated family I believe traveled with Elijah Roach when he went to TN (White County) would be what I believe was his sister, Milly, who married George Yates. If my research is correct then Milly would die rather young and George Yates would then continue on in the White/Overton/Putnam County, TN area. This is the same general area where Elijah's daughter, Martha (married Lorenzo Dow McCormick and John Smith) lived throughout her life.
I believe Elijah Roach made the move to TN for work. He was a blacksmith. George McCormick, father of LD, owned and operated a stand in Fentress County, TN for several years ('on the road to White County'). I thought this might give explanation as to how the two families became acquainted.
I also mention Fentress County TN as there appears to be some connection to that and Overton County TN for several of the closely alighned families who would come to Cumberland County KY in the same time frame as Elijah Roach. Among them were Davidson families.
Of the Charlotte County VA Roach group I can not confirm any of the Roaches moving to AL. However, Elizabeth Johnston, widow of Joshua Roach, would marry Francis Thompson. I believe they moved to AL. According to reports on this family, Joshua and Elizabeth Johnston Roach's son, Joshua intermarried with the Cherokee (descending from Nancy Ward), and he lived out his life in Oklahoma. Whether or not these reports are on target I can not say only that I know the Joshua Roach in Oklahoma was of appropriate age to be the same and he was born in VA. Regardless, I do believe that Francis and Elizabeth Thompson made move to AL.
If I have correctly identified Elijah's siblings in Pittsylvania (if he is of the James Roach line), then it looks like he and Milly left but others stayed behind in the area.
I'm not sure any of this is particularly helpful to you. As for Davidson connections to this particular line I can only speak of those noted for Elijah. There was one marriage with these Roach and Davidsons in Cumberland County KY that I am aware of. They also did appear to have some business connections (Fentress, Overton, Clay TN and Cumberland KY) and they did intermarry between aligned families.
I do not know the origins of this group Davidsons before they came to TN. To be honest, I have not wanted to confuse myself entirely by trying to move them back further. As you know, I am struggling with the Joseph Davidson line out of Pittsylvania region to Dickson TN and I can not close the gap from his selling his land in that area before 1790 to the Terry family and his appearance by 1800 in Montgomery County TN. The Joseph Davidson line represents my paternal line while the Elijah Roach line represents my husband's maternal line.
Robin

I don't think there is a connection, His name was "Norvin"
Roach, born in 1892 in Peru, Indiana. I'm the granddaughter
of his oldest brother Charles.
Re: Roach Family Charlotte and Pittsylvania, VA

Robin, a branch of my overall Davidson family was VERY closely associated with the Roach family in Charlotte Co., VA in the early-1800s. In that regard, I now have a recent "DNA match" in my "Family 10" at www.davidsongenes.org who "traces back" to a John Davidson who was born in 1822 in VA (per the 1870 Simpson Co., TN census). In 1860, this John Davidson lived in Jackson Co., AL (in a hotel), but two of his children lived in a couple of nearby Roach households....and a third child lived in a nearby Owen household. A couple of the Roach family members are shown on the 1860 Jackson Co., AL census as having been born in VA, and these are Eliza Walker Roach (age 35 in 1860...had there been a Walker/Roach marriage?) and a Susan Roach (age 24 in 1860).

Note: The 1860 AL census, unlike the 1870 KY census, showed that the referenced John Davidson was born in GA versus VA...but that appears to be an error.

William W. Davidson from my "Family 10" died in Charlotte Co., VA by 1839, and the 1830 Charlotte census showed that he and his wife had one apparent son age 0-5 and two apparent sons age 5-10. I would not be surprised if one of the two sons age 5-10 was the above-referenced John Davidson in AL in 1860 and then in KY in 1870.

Note: You can read more about the "connection" between this William W. Davidson and the Roach family in Charlotte Co., VA in an old post that I left on the Roach message board over on the GenForum website.

Can you "connect" these Roach and/or Owen family members in Jackson Co., AL in 1860 to the same overall families back in Charlotte Co., VA in the early-1800s? Until I found the above information, I was really "drawing a blank" on just how/where this John Davidson "connected" to my overall Davidson family. Thanks. Bill Davidson

Robin, I don't know if you looked at my old GenForum post on their Roach message board or not, but "my" William W. Davidson is mentioned in the "guardian account" records in Charlotte Co., VA with Millory (Milly?...maybe this is Elijah's sister that you mentioned) Roach, Elijah Roach (is this perhaps the one who married Miss W. Owen?), Mrs. P. Roach, Martha Roach (maybe this was another sister of Elijah's, and maybe Elijah named one of his own daughters in her honor) and Catherine Roach. In addition, Edmund Cody married Mildred Roach, and Mildred had been a ward of William W. Davidson's. William W. Davidson also provided surety for the marriages of both Thomas East to Mary Roach (in 1827) and Robert D. Moore (was he related to the Elizabeth Moore who married Pleasant Owen?) to Catherine Roach (in 1821).

William Davidson's first wife was apparently Miss Mary Kemp (who had also been a ward of William's), but I don't know who her parents were (I wonder if her mother was a Roach or Roach descendant)? Since DNA proves that the John Davidson in Jackson Co., AL was a member of my Davidson family, I STRONGLY suspect that the Roach and Owen families in Jackson County...with the children of John Davidson in their homes...were part of "your" overall Roach and Owen families.
It seems certain that one of the two Roach households in Jackson Co., AL in 1860...each with a "Davidson child" in the home..."traces back" to the Henry B. Roach and his son Charles Lewis Roach (died 1856 in Jackson Co., AL) who were in Amherst Co., VA. How was that "Amherst Co., VA Roach family" related to thr "Charlotte Co., VA Roach family?" The Margaret W. Roach (age 43) in Jackson Co., AL in 1860 was almost certainly the Mrs. Margaret W. (Higgins) Roach, who was the third wife of the above-referenced Charles Lewis Roach (per RootsWeb World Connect). Several of their known sons (John, Luther, Milton and William Wallace) were still living in Margaret's home in 1860, per the census.

If John Davidson was truly out of Charlotte Co., VA, as I suspect, then it would appear that there was probably some close connection between the Roach family in Charlotte Co., VA and the Roach family in Amherst Co., VA.

Note: My "Family 10" also had a branch in Amherst Co., VA by the early-1800s (Giles Davidson, who married Jeminia Pendleton). I am not aware of a John Davidson in that branch of my family...but such a man from there would certainly not be impossible. I still suspect, however, that this John Davidson in AL was a son of the William W. Davidson (died about 1839) of Charlotte Co., VA, since William was so involved with the Roach family there.

I note the following records in Charlotte Co., VA:

William Kemp married Catey Roach on 5 Jan 1797; John Roach was the father of the bride.

Catherine Kemp married Thomas Elam on 29 Apr 1809; Price Roach was surety.

These marriages show a "connection" between the Roach and Kemp families, and the first wife of "my" William W. Davidson was a Mary Kemp. As such, it makes even more sense that William W. and Mary (Kemp) Davidson's apparent son John Davidson would be associated with the Roach family in Alabama in 1860. Per the census, William W. Davidson's wife (presumably Mary Kemp) was age 26-45 in 1820 (and she was probably closer to 26 than to 45).

It is interesting that the oldest Elisha T. Roach on the Charlotte Co., VA census in 1850 (age 34) was a "tailor." That was also the occupation of the John Davidson down in AL in 1860 (John would have been about the age of 28-30 in 1850). I would ASSUME that Prucilla Roach was the widowed wife of an APPARENTLY unknown/unproven Mr. Roach...and that William W. Davidson "stepped-in" to help when THAT Mr. Roach died (whoever he was).

I have no "real proof" that William W. Davidson was the father of John Davidson. In that regard, I was hoping to find a "link" between the "Charlotte Co., VA Roach family" and the Roach family members who were in Jackson Co., AL in 1860 (with some of John Davidson's children in their homes). So far, however, I can only link the Roach family in AL to the Roach family in Amherst Co., VA (though I suspect that both of those Roach families were/are PROBABLY "blood related").

First let me ask, who your George was married too? I to am a descendant of George Washington Roach that was married to Mary Ann Thompson. I have been trying for years to prove to my satisfaction, whether Isaac Roach was my ggg grandfather. Right now I am on the fence, leaning toward him not being a son of Isaac.
Either way I would love to compare what we have on the Roaches that came to GA.
