Roades/Roads/Rhodes from Jamaica LI

Looking to ID my gr x 3 Grandmother. The family Bible lists my Gr x3 Grandfather, John Bennett marrying Mary Roades. John's parents and siblings are listed in the bible, but none of Mary's family history is written there.

John and his father Isaac are listed right before a John Roades in the 1810 Census (45 and over) and after him two more Roades are listed - William and John. Both seem to be 26 to 44, and I am thinking that John Roades could very well be Mary's father, and William and John brothers.

I am hoping to find anyone who connects to these Jamaica LI Roades.

Could you help me with my Rhoades linage? I have info from the old family bible showing my great-grandfather John Roads (Rhoades) b. 19 oct 1853, d. 26 jul 1880. He married Letita M. Jackson on 07 oct 1873. She was b. 02 oct 1853, d.24 jun 1901. Their son, my grandfather was Otto David Rhaodes b. 12 may 1880, in Adams Co, OHIO, d. 20 may 1954. I haven't been able to locate any parents or siblings. My dad was Vernon Wesley Rhaodes, B. 06 dec 1906 in Cols. OH. From family stories, the family originated in Germany, to PA, to VA or WVA, then to MI and OH. I also know that some of his family lived in the southern part of IN at one time. That is where my grandfather retired to, his farm was in Orange Co,IN and DuBois Co. IN. I would like to have any list of names that might match up. I vaguely remember some talk of a Sylvester and Casper, but don't know thier connection. Thanks

Two women named Elizabeth Brock married in Cass Co.,MO, so took a while to decide that one who married J.Patton was the daughter of my Perry Green Brock. At the time that your Elizabeth married Fields Bledsoe, as far as we have found there were no other Brocks in the county. Ourslived in the area between Pleasant Hill and Harrisonville. Within a few years another group of Brocks came and settled near Strasburg, Cass Co. Know at least one of that family born in IL. Now am curious about a possible tie between your Elizabeth's first husband and my Brocks. If you find her first marriage, please let me know who, when, and where. Thank you.
shelbadavis@digitex.net

NJ Rhodes/Rhoades to Indiana ca. 1835-1840

I am working on a theory about the Rhodes/Rhoades who moved from NJ to Indiana ca. 1835-1840 and wondered if someone might have some input....

My husband can trace his famly back through JAmes Rhodes, b. about 1794 in NJ, who was married to Hope, also from NJ. One of their children was Hiram, b. ca 1835 in NJ. By 1840, they were in Marion County, Indiana.

Now, here is my theory ...

I've been stuck on this family line for almost 2 years now, and I decided to go back to the 1840 census in Marion County, Indiana to see if I might be able to start piecing the puzzle together ... Here are the results of my investigation:

According to the 1840 Census in Marion County, James Roads Sr. (age 70-80) lived in the same area as James Roads Jr., (age 40-50); Joseph R. Roads (also age 40-50); Samuel B. Roads, Hiram Roads, and Charles S. Roads - all three of whom are listed as age 30-40.

Now, moving ahead to the 1850 census in Marion county, all of these individuals (save James Sr. who apparently had passed on by that time) indicated that they had been born in NJ, as well as a few children and spouses. I know from our side of the family that Hiram, son of James Jr., was born in 1835 in NJ, and that his younger brother John, b. 1840 in IN, so I am concluding that sometime between 1835 and 1840 they moved here.

So, based on these two censuses, I am concluding that all of these men/families are related. (It also helps that a number of them use the same names (ex. Hiram) in their lines, also supporting this theory!)

My question at this point is, can anyone else out there assist me in taking thins the next step back? Does anyone have information regarding James Sr.? What part of NJ he was from? The maiden names of any of the Roads' spouses? James Sr.'s wife's name/maiden name? Any information would be very helpful!

Thanks so much!
Marianne
Indianapolis

Hi Shelba,

I'm sure that they probablly are related. I stumbled onto her first marriage by accident. Her marriage to Fields Bledsoe is the only one listed in the family bible. I was looking for information on him and his family, when I found information on their marriage it listed her last name as Brock. The birthdate is exactly the same so I'm sure that it is her. I'll let you know if I find anything. Thanks. Cynthia
