Also did Elizabeth & Mr. Hizer have any children & did Philip & Mary have children?
Ollie
Hi Ollie, Did you get what you wanted on Grandpa Phillip? Philip's father was Jacob Rhoads, born about 1752, died before January 21, 1836, which is the date his daughter Elizabeth Hizer brought suit against her fathers estate, in Highland Co, Ohio. Jacob is believed to be buried at, Old Dutch Cemetery, Brush Creek Twp, Highland Co, Ohio. A head stone was suppose to be ericted by Jacob's grandson Joseph W. Rhoads, my 2nd great grandfather. I don't think he got to it.
My line goes from Jacob>Philip>Joseph W.>Levi>John C.>Berteen>Myself.
I am not the worlds leading authority on our Rhoades Family, but I know some & I do share.

Re: ROADS/RHODES in Marblehead, MA

I know this reply is about 10 years late, but I just saw the posting today. Samuel Roads Jr was born 20 March 1763 in Marblehead, and died 23 November 1836. His wife Eleanor Marion Story was born 8 October 1774 or 1775 in Marblehead, and died 9 August 1821. Their son John S. Roads was my great-great-great-grandfather. They also had a son Alfred (born 8 October 1810, Marblehead, died 25 February 1885). I don't know if this is the Alfred Roads who married Mary Charamell.
Samuel Roads Jr's parents were Samuel Roads (born 10 October 1731 in Marblehead, and died about 1803) and Sarah Mojey (born 1732/33 in Marblehead, and died about 1805).
Eleanor Marion Story's parents were Dr. Elisha Story, PhD (born 3 December, 1743, Boston, MA, and died 27 August 1805, Marblehead), and Ruth Ruddock (born 1745/46, Boston, and died 21 March 1778, Marblehead). Elisha Story was a member of The Sons of Liberty and a participant in The Boston Tea Party.
Eleanor Marion Story's half brother Joseph Story (son of Elisha Story and his 2nd wife Mehitable Stacey Pedrick) was a Justice of The Supreme Court of the United States.

My paternal grandmother was Eugenia (Jean) Rhoades or Rhodes Godfrey who lived in the Booneville or Magazine, AR area. I don't know the names of her parents or siblings, but there is a book about this family in the Huguenot Society library in Charleston, SC. I believe they moved to AR from TN and were from SC at one time. There were 15 children in my grandmother's family and they were taken in by the indians and allowed to live in the indian reservation due to hardship. My grandmother was 12 years old at this time and must have learned her medical skills from the indians since she was the only country nurse in her community and took care of people, treating them with herbs and all kinds of cures. She even saved pneumonia patients and delivered babies in the local hospital! My cousin, Don Godfrey, tells me we have indian ancestors, but I don't know anything about that part of the family history. However, there must have been some reason they were allowed to live on the indian reservation.
My father was born in 1912 and had 7 brothers and one sister. His first cousin was Garland Godfrey, but I don't know the names of any of his Rhodes relatives. The photo is of my father, Howard F. Godfrey around 1932.

I see that you are in Madisonville, TN. I graduated from Madisonville High School. You are talking about my line of Coles but have mistakes in it. Do not be offended. That's what researching is all about. My Great Grandmother Rogers was Alice Cole. If you would like to meet and discuss this I would be glad to meet you at the Madisonville Library. The reason I suggest this, is that my elderly parents live in Sequoia Estates behind the Library. If you don't want to meet, which in today's world I could understand, you can email me or call me if you want. I'll leave that up to you.

Re: Jacob Roads

I have studied much. And the lineage is quite interesting. If the names are correct from Europe, and it is beginning to come true. Our Name Came from Charlemange's mother
Roodtberg. His father was unknown. The Berg means from the mountain. If a Burg on the end of the name, they came from a Castle.
-Did your Philip M. Rhoads marry Mary M. Windle/Wendel. Now I have some records of Joseph W. Rhoads, who Married Lydia Roush. I will try to find.
-Philips Parents were Jacob Rhoads born 1754 and wife Maria Elizabeth Stultz Roads.
-I am the same Gramdparent, Jacob and Maria Stultz, but Jacob Roads Jr. who married Jane Williams. Your Phllip M. was Jacob's brother.
-My findings are from Europe.
Christian Roodt/Mid 1600 Bavaria Germany
Jacob/or Henry Roads/Roodt -Bavaria Germany -
Valentine Roodt - Germany on the boat Lydia 1743 - wife Cauble
Valentine Roodt, Jr. - Ameria - wife Rhineheart.
Jacob Sr. /Maria Shultz - married in VA
I am from his Son Jacob Jr. to his Son-Philip in Ohio.
Your GF was Philip M. Roads, son of Jacob SR, and I do show Joseph W. Rhoads as your Philip M.'s Son.
Both Valentines, Sr. and Jr. are buried in Hillsboro, Ohio.
If you study Valentine in America and Germany, you will get more info.
-I will look up your John Carey - I have seen info.
It is fun. The names can vary, roth, Roads, Rhoads, Rouse
Roodt- Europe name which connects to Mother Roodtberg of Charlemange. They were from the Meriadians, Jesuses group.
When on the boat to America, they were given a different name, American.
Please check Palatines to America and Colonial boats. You will find on the boat.
My # rhoads/mishef@aol.com

Mostly starting in Highland Co and mixing with the Roush Family. Then moving up to Benton Twp, Pike Co, OH. John Carey Rhoades moved to Warren Co, Iowa 1910ish, married Mead Roush & had my mother & family. My Rhoades & Roushes inter-marry for three generations. Levi's daughter Rebecca Roads marries John Roush & takes things into a fourth diminsion.

Seeking all info on African-American Robert ROADS (b.abt.1820) and wife Hannah (b.abt.1837) of Fairdealing, Marshall, KY. They and children Robert (1858), Bet (1860), and Ann (1862) are only African-American family in vicinity of former slaveowner Enos FAUGHN property. Faughn oral history states that after Emancipation Enos "gave" (rented?) land to family who had been his slaves. Is this the Roads family? Enos's great-granddaughter Nina married William Henry RHODES (white) of TN. Can't determine William's antecedents, can't figure out how their families knew each other. Did the Rhodes family sell Robert to Enos Faughn? Independent researcher very interested in contact with any Roads descendants.
NJ Rhodes/Rhoades to Indiana ca. 1835-1840

I am working on a theory about the Rhodes/Rhoades who moved from NJ to Indiana ca. 1835-1840 and wondered if someone might have some input....

My husband can trace his famly back through JAmes Rhodes, b. about 1794 in NJ, who was married to Hope, also from NJ. One of their children was Hiram, b. ca 1835 in NJ. By 1840, they were in Marion County, Indiana.

Now, here is my theory ...

I've been stuck on this family line for almost 2 years now, and I decided to go back to the 1840 census in Marion County, Indiana to see if I might be able to start piecing the puzzle together ... Here are the results of my investigation:

According to the 1840 Census in Marion County, James Roads Sr. (age 70-80) lived in the same area as James Roads Jr., (age 40-50); Joseph R. Roads (also age 40-50); Samuel B. Roads, Hiram Roads, and Charles S. Roads - all three of whom are listed as age 30-40.

Now, moving ahead to the 1850 census in Marion county, all of these individuals (save James Sr. who apparently had passed on by that time) indicated that they had been born in NJ, as well as a few children and spouses. I know from our side of the family that Hiram, son of James Jr., was born in 1835 in NJ, and that his younger brother John, b. 1840 in IN, so I am concluding that sometime between 1835 and 1840 they moved here.

So, based on these two censuses, I am concluding that all of these men/families are related. (It also helps that a number of them use the same names (ex. Hiram) in their lines, also supporting this theory!)

My question at this point is, can anyone else out there assist me in taking thins the next step back? Does anyone have information regarding James Sr.? What part of NJ he was from? The maiden names of any of the Roads' spouses? James Sr.'s wife's name/maiden name? Any information would be very helpful!

Thanks so much!
Marianne
Indianapolis

Hi Cousin
Just read your message on RootsWeb. You did not think that Richard and Diannah Rhodes were in the 1870 census.

They are! They are listed as Richard and Dianner Roads, living in Fulton County, Arkansas, with children: Malisey 16, John 14, Richard 7, Austin 6, and Susan 3.

I think both Richard and Diannah may have died shortly after this. They have a younger daughter named Louisa Angeline Rhoads, who did not know what year she was born but knew that her mother Diannah died about 3 weeks after her birth. Her father Richard died about 3 years after that. The children were then send to Moody, Missouri to live with their Uncle John Rhodes. (Rhoades is spelled all kinds of ways!)

My GGrandfather is the John age 14 listed above.

Sue Carvell, Jonesboro, Arkansas

I have Rodes/rhodes/roads/rhoads (my family spelling) that lived in the same area eventually Harford County Md then some of the family including my great great grandfather John Matlack Rhoads settled for a time in Oxford Pa just across the Maryland border in Chester County. My great grandfather and most of his siblings also lived there. My great grandfather was also John Matlack rhoads (Jr) John Matlack Rhoads (sr) was born in Maryland. His brother Charles Rhoads who also spent years in Oxford Pa was born in Havre de Grace. Their father was Alexander. I believe Andrew and Susannna Jones Rhoads were their parents. They were married in Baltimore and were Methodists. Andrew also according to a Census was born in Maryland. I do not know who his parents were but this family was here pre-revolutionary war period. The family eventually moved to Philadelphia. ak

Re: Help with Roads Rhodes Rhoads

Rebecca Rhodes married at St Johns Church, Baltimore Co, Joppa Md, in March 1741 to a Timothy News or Newes, more experienced researchers than myself believe this Timothy was our family patriarch.
Our Baltimore Co forefather and John Roads purchased in Baltimore Co in November 1754 one hundred acres of property West of Bear Cabin Branch.
. In 1758 Timothy Neve and John Rhods are entered 'division of land’ transaction.
In 1768 Md State Legislature 900 + names were presented in manuscript form protesting the proposed removal of County Seat from Joppa to Baltimore Town. Therein is listed John Rhoads junr (his mark) appearing across the page was Timothy Neve (his mark).
January 1772 another division of land is listed, 35 acres is sold and undetermined acreage is leased for 50 Pounds .

In 1773 Harford County, Md was formed, carved from North North Eastern Baltimore Co.
In Harford Co today, Bear Cabin Branch is West of Bel Air Md. Bel Air was near to the center of the Bush River Lower Hundred of 233 yrs ago.

One Peden text shows our Timothy was listed on said Bush River Lower Hundred in 1774 then lined out. Timothy Neave is entered in same ‘ hundred ’ for 1776 according to 'the premier' edition of Pedens Early Harford Countians.
Benjamin Rhodes* was listed as a taxable in John Rhodes (spelling?*) in the 1774 Bush River Lower Hundred. It was a head of household (John Rhodes) census and enumerated only males 16 yrs plus (Benjamin) as taxables and any slaves (none there). My source was a Peden s book in The Harford County Historical Society in Bel Air on a trip to Harford County in 2001.

I did not locate a John R* in the same 'Hundred ' in 1776 in Early Harford Countians by Peden. Mr Peden has since published two more volumes updating-supplementing the original those are as yet unread by myself .
Benjamin is still there In 1782 he is mentioned (British Property which was confiscated) : 'Evaluation of Harford confiscated proprietary reserve lands.’
In the 1783 Bush River Lower Hundred (Harford Co) assessment Benjamin Rhoades & Mary Rhoads shared portions of a tract, he 50 acres. she 17 acres. The tract was Pleasant Hill.
However Mary Rhoads did get assessment for additional acreage: Mary Rhoads. Good Neighbour, 14 acres Harford Bush River Lower Hundred .
A 1760 John Rhodes leasing a ’Good Neighbourhood’? Then a Mary Rhodes is assessed for ‘Good Neighbour’ in 1783? And a connection point between Mary Rhodes and Benjamin Rhoades in ‘Pleasant Hill’ .. almost a family connection .

The heads of families Census of the United States taken in the year 1790 for the State of Maryland a transcription concerning Harford County , Maryland :
Rhodes Benjamin , 1 free white male 16 up , 1 female
(seperate-another-household listing) Roads Mary , 1 free white male to 16, 5 females

Several members of the Abraham & Anna Maria Roads and Jacob & Jane Roads families from Highland County, Ohio went west in the 1800's. Know quite a bit about the ones who went to Oklahoma Territory in 1890's-1900. Currently tracking Brice & Jane Roads family who went to NW Missouri (Nodaway County, Burlington Twp, and Burlington Jct.) in early 1890's. Brice died in 1895, after moving to Nodaway Co. to take charge of a ranch in 1892. He left a wife (Eliza Jane) and 8 kids, 1 of whom died between 1895 and 1900. Also want to know more about the Roads families in Wichita, KS, Tulsa, OK, Tucson, AZ, and of course Highland County, OH. Does anyone know of any of these family descendents who may be still living in these areas of the country? Thanks very much for any and all information.

Hi, could this be John Q Rhoads from Hillsboro, OH? If so my friend now live in the house that he once lived in. I have the family tree for them.

John Q Roads b. He was married to 1st to Rachel Elizabeth Berry (1855 - 1899) on March March 3, 1878. 2nd Carrie Katherine McMullen (1867 - 1957) Johns parents were Daniel S.
Hello, My friends now live in your grandfathers house in Hillsboro and was wondering if you recall if there was a dairy farm there? I know that John Q. sold or donated some land to the Hillsboro Elks. I have scans of the bible also, I found them here on another message. I am also a decendant from the Valentine Roads. Thank you

The birth records, names, and ages appear to match up pretty closely with those ROADS and VANZANT members of birth and death in the Bible records who are living in several households of close proximity in the census records for Washington, Ohio.
As a side note: I believe there was a reference to Hillsboro and think that there exists a Hillsborough Ohio in this region. There is a Hillsboro, Oregon the Hillsboro Oregon being named I think (like many many other places in Oregon) after the locale 'back home' by the settlers who came west.

ROADS married VANZANT

This is a correction to some prior postings and includes a photo from the same bible. Originally I was told Vangent was the surname and in one portion that appeared to be correct, however, with no records by that surname and a NEW photo added with clearly the correct spelling of VANZANT we can now assume that 1- nobody spelled well 2-Vanzant is likely much more correct and 3-even though it technically could or perhaps should have been the more common spelling of both surnames such as Rhodes, Rhoades, etc. and Vanzandt or VanZandt the facts are we have to leave these as ROADS and VANZANT for the present. See one new photo below.
