Leonard Roan and Elizabeth Moore

I found a marriage cert. for Elizabeth Moore and Leonard Roan. They were married 19 Nov 1808 in Wake, NC. I am trying to find out if this was my Leonard Roan that was married to I THINK Mary Elizabeth "Polly" . Leonard had acquired land in Butts County, Georgia in the 1827 Land Lottery. From there I have traced them to Henry County, Georgia. From the 1830 census I figured Leonard was born between 1780 and 1790 and that his wife was born between 1790 and 1800. Leonard is the father of Benjamin Thomas Roan born 27 Aug 1835 in Butts County, GA and died 17 Jul 1914 in Pike County, GA. I can not find any record of Leonard past the 1840 census. So I figured he died between 1840 and 1850. The family has always that Leonard was born in Virginia and that he stayed in North Carolina for a while before he moved to Georgia. They also said that Benjamin's mother was "Polly" (a form of Mary)and that she was from North Carolina. I found her living with Benjamin on the 1880 census as Mary. It states that Mary was Born about 1791 in North Carolina. Benjamin had a sister named Lizzie Roan that married "Big" John Brooks. Since everyone back then named everyone after family members I thought that "Polly" may have been Mary Elizabeth or Elizabeth Mary. Benjamin also had a daughter that he named Lizzie also. When I was seaching for Benjamin's sister I found her in the 1850 census in Henry County, Georgia. As I looked at the family above Lizzie's I find an Elizabeth Roan with a son and a daughter and that she was a widow, and she was born in 1791 in North Carolina. Benjamin married Martha Susan Chandler in Georgia. Martha was born 10 Aug 1840 in Georgia and died 12 Jun 1917 in Georgia. Their children were John David Roan, Mary Hayes Roan, Sarah Frances Roan, Martha Roan, Minnie Roan, Vada Roan, Robert Reid Roan, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Roan and William Mitchell Roan. I know this is a lot but I'm needing some feed back. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me.
Merrill Hannah Roan
mhroan@windstream.net

Archebald Roan

I have been going through all my mother in law's family tree documents that she has collected all these years. She is no longer alive so I can't ask her.

I found a photo copy of an old deed or deed transfer. It's hard to read. It is from Tennessess. I can't read the county. It looks like it might be Carley County, but I can't find one. Either Archebald Roan was selling land to Thomas Johnston or her was buying it from him. It has one date of September 1809, but at the top it looks like there is a date of 26th March 1876 or 1816. The strange thing is we don't have a Archebald Roan in our tree.

Does this sound familiar or does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Merrill Roan

I am researching my husband's family. My husband's name is William Chalres Roan. His father was James Mitchell Roan that married Martha Kate Oxford, his father was William Mitchell that married Lena Carden, his father was Benjamin Thomas that married Martha Susan Chandler and his father was Leonard Roan that married "Polly". All of these are from Georgia but Leonard was born we think either NC or Virginia.
This too is a shot in the dark. We are looking for any information on the Roan's from Georgia. My husband's GG grandfather was Benjamin Thomas Roan that married Martha Susan Chandler. Benjamin was born in Butts County, Georgia and died in Pike County, Georgia. His parents were Leonard Roan that married "Polly" or Mary. I found Leonard on a 1830 census in Butts County and maybe a 1840 census in Henry County. I also have Benjamin Thomas and Martha on 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 census stating that they lived in Pike County, Georgia. Benjamin and Martha's children were John David, Mary Hayes, Sarah F., Martha, Vada, Robert, Elizabeth and William Mitchell (husband's line). If any of this sounds familiar please contact me at mhroan@windstream.net.
Thanks,
Merrill Hannah Roan

Searching for any information on the ancestry of Eva Catherine Roan. If my information is correct, she was the wife of Charles L. Bush who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1792. I'm not certain how long he stayed in Philadelphia, but in 1814 he and his family located in Mt. Pleasant Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. Catherine would have married Charles in the 1792-1814 time frame, probably in Pennsylvania, but where specifically? Thanks for any help.

ROAN, CHARLES HOWARD - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

ROAN, CHARLES HOWARD

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Born: 16 August 1923, Claude, Tex. Accredited to. Texas. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 18 September 1944. Shortly after his leader ordered a withdrawal upon discovering that the squad was partly cut off from their company as a result of the rapid advance along an exposed ridge during an aggressive attack on the strongly entrenched enemy, Pfc. Roan and his companions were suddenly engaged in a furious exchange of handgrenades by Japanese forces emplaced in a cave on higher ground and to the rear of the squad. Seeking protection with 4 other marines in a depression in the rocky, broken terrain, Pfc. Roan was wounded by an enemy grenade which fell close to their position and, immediately realizing the eminent peril to his comrades when another grenade landed in the midst of the group, unhesitatingly flung himself upon it, covering it with his body and absorbing the full impact of the explosion. By his prompt action and selfless conduct in the face of almost certain death, he saved the lives of 4 men. His great personal valor reflects the highest credit upon himself and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his comrades.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Claude, Texas
Cemetery: Claude Cemetery (Memorial Marker)

Also Remembered at ABMC Ardennes - Belgium

Born: 1923 Claude, TX

Died: 1944 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/roan_...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_H._Roan

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Dear Claude,

To my knowledge, my ROANE / RUANE ancestors are of Irish descent. I am aware of a theory that the surname may have developed in Ireland from people with origins in the French city of Roen. In the absence of any real evidence, I must stick with the Irish origin.

If you have searched on the name in the United States, you know there are many ROANE families in the southern states. Some arrived as early as the 1600s (Virginia) and came from England. I have no reason to believe my 19th century Irish forebears are related to them.

If you post your query again -and include a birth date, death date, or other range of years, that will make it easier for other researchers to help you. I wish you the very best of luck in your search for your Jacques ROUANNE in Louisiana!

Christine

I am also interested in a TAYLOR-ROAN marriage, and also interested in Taylors and Roans in Maury Co., TN. My son-in-law's gg-grandparents, Emma B. ROAN and John Wesley TAYLOR, married Jan 1880 in Hunt Co., TX. They were both from TN, but I don't know where. There was a John W. Taylor who is the right age to be John Wesley Taylor in the 1860 Maury Co., TN census, son of Martha and John W. Taylor. Also, some ROANs from Maury Co., TN ended up in Hunt Co., TX, so perhaps Emma and John Wesley were from Maury Co. Please contact me here or at clarksha@swbell.net. Thanks.

Rone / Roan family in Missouri

Trying to find out more about a Roan / Rone family found in Conway Co. AR in the 1870 census and in Butler, Pemiscott MO in the 1880 census:

1870
Jonathan Roan 45 TN
Juliana 40 ILL
George 19 ILL
Parlle 12 AR
Jane 6 AR
Mary 3 AR
Franklin 1 AR
Margaret Williams 75 SC

1880
John T. Rone 53 TN NC TN
Juliney Rone 45 IL NC NC
Jane Rone 15 AR RN IL
Mary Rone AR TN IL
Charlie Rone 18 TN TN TN
John Smith 25 TN TN TN
George W. Smith 25 TN TN TN
Charles P. Cook 20 IN IN IL

I have reason to believe that Julina may have been the sister of Elizabeth Williams of Franklin Co. ILL (both daughters of Brazilla Williams). Elizabeth married Andrew Perrine in Illinois and is found almost next door to Julina and John in the 1870 Conway Co. AR census. I believe Margaret Williams shown on the census to be the mother of Julina and Elizabeth.
