Hi there! I need some help. I'm looking for my GGrandparents marriage certificate. Edward Roane b. may 27, 1868 in Black River Falls, Wisconsin d. January 14, 1939 in Billings, Montana. m. Sarah Jane Thomas b. November 26, 1876 in Lincoln Township, Smith County, Kansas d. December 5, 1958 in Lewistown, Montana. From a Newspaper account of Sarah Jane Thomas Roane's death it states that Edward and Sarah married on August 15, 1891 in Nebraska and that Sarah had attended school there but it doesn't state where in Nebraska. Edward Roanes parents are: Alexander Roane b. Pennsylvania and Celestia Davey b. Illinois or Pennsylvania. Sarah Jane Thomas's parents were: Henry C. Thomas b. Ohio and Sarah maiden name unknown b. Ohio. I would dearly appreciate any help you can give me in this matter...would love copies of certificates or newspaper clippings or death certificates. Just let me know if you can help! Sincerely, Lynette

I have an African American ROANE family in Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia. They married into the THOMPSON clan. Both families were free persons of color since colonial times.

Anyone out there with connections to this family or county?

Hi Brian,
Leonard Roane is the son of Patrick and Susan Roane. From what I see, I believe Patrick Roane's father's name was George Roane. They are on the 1870 census records for Henrico County. They had six sons and one Daughter. The names are as follows: George, Patrick, William, Wyat, Bacchus, Edmonia and Leonard. Patrick, Wyatt, Bacchus and Leonard moved to Newport News Va. George and Edmonia (my gg grandmother) stayed in Henrico County. I've reviewed records in Henrico County and saw that George and Patrick were born into slavery and the slave owner was John D. Warren. My gg grandmother born after slavery was born on a farm owned by John D. Warren. That makes me think that he may have been a good man (just a thought though). Please send me an email and I can give you my phone number. My email address is junace4play@verizon.net. I look forward to speaking with you soon cousin!!!

Thank you so much for this information. There has been a small debate within in my family about whether our the name given in the 1900 and 1910 census was correct. Susan Roane's father was listed as Lemuel Roane. However, there was confusion as many on our side thought his name was Leonard. So that mystery is solved. We are indeed speaking about the same person. Which would make us cousins.

I've emailed you a photo of Leonard/Lemuel. I also have one for Julia Bates if you wold like to have it.

Do you have any infrmation about Leonard W's parents? Siblings? you can email on anamericanincornwall@googlemail.com if you prefer.

thanks again!

My Roane family was in Varina, Henrico County VA. My Leonard W. Roane married a Julia Bates and they relocated to Newport News VA. I know he married Julia because I saw it listed on the Henrico County Marriages. When I looked at the names on the census bureau, I saw that Leonard had two daughters named Susan and Ella. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

I have been researching this massive family as well.

By any chance did your Roanes move to Newport News or were they all born there?

I ask because my G-G-Grandfather had three brothers whose offspring we have yet to locate.
Thank you for your message. I wish I could be of more help. I'm afraid I know very little about the Roane side of the family. The only Roane ancestor my family know of is my grandmother's father, Lemuel Roane. We know nothing of his parents or if he had any siblings. My grandmother named her first child Leonard. So I'm wondering if this is a family name amongst the Roanes?

Spencer ROANE ancestor of Annie Neville MAYS?

I am researching Annie Neville MAYS (1866-1943) of Petersburg, Virginia. In various documents, she consistently made a point of using her full middle name: NEVILLE. Her obituary (below) points to connections with the ROANE, MERIWETHER, LEWIS, and HENRY families. Any ideas on the Neville she is pointing to or the ROANE connection would be most appreciated. Census information suggests a connection to a Harriet Roane and the TALIAFERRO surname. Thanks, Carl.

Annie married 1st: Abraham Demarest WOOL (1861-1886) of Petersburg, VA,
and 2nd: Dr. Samuel Alexander HINTON (1844-1912) of Petersburg, VA.

Petersburg Progress - Index, July 29, 1943 - Obituaries: "Mrs. Samuel Alexander Hinton - Mrs. Samuel Alexander Hinton died yesterday morning in Richmond after a long period of ill health. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Mays, of Amherst, was a descendant of Judge Spencer Roane, J. Meriwether Lewis and Patrick Henry. Mrs. Hinton is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Oscar Harrison West, of Richmond, and two sons, Erasmus Gill Hinton, of Richmond, and Harley Ross Hinton, of Afton...."
1825 Obituary for Elizabeth Hoskins Roane wife of Spencer

Richmond Enquirer, 22 November 1825, p3c6.

Obituary of Elizabeth Hoskins Roane

“We have the melancholy office of announcing the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Roane, wife of Judge Spencer Roane, Esq., late Judge of the Court of Appeals. She breathed her last in the county of King and Queen on Friday, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Hoskins. No lady had a more numerous circle of acquaintances. The society of none was more sought after. So much animation of spirit; such kindness of manners, such gentleness of feeling marked her every act. She carries with her to the grave the sincerest respects of all her acquaintances. She has survived but three years her respected husband – This double deprivation to her only child will be most deeply felt.

“The family of Mrs. Roane’s mother has been severely visited by the hand of death. A few weeks since, Mrs. R. lost her eldest sister, Miss Polly Hoskins. But a week before her own dissolution, her mother Mrs. Hoskins was torn from her. Her brother, Mr. Thomas Hoskins, has lost within a few days two of his children – and her own dissolution was destined to add to this melancholy mortality.”

I'm afraid I don't know any of the names you mention.

I have no solid evidence that my Roane family was in Massachusetts before 1859. John P. Roane was born in Ireland in 1831.

Since I posted, I discovered John had a brother, Patrick, who was born the same year (twin?) and married a Mary Hanrahan in Lowell, MA and then disappears. Also, I found a sister, Hannah, a few years older, who never married, worked in the Lowell mills and died there of tuberculosis in the mid 1860s.
Sarah,
Can you tell me if Melissa Didlake aged 20 during the 1850 census is any relation to James or Verlinda. Some people read it as aged 70 but it was aged 20. Velrinda later is shown on a census as Melinda. Which is correct? The reason I ask about Melissa Didlake is she was my great, great grandmother.
Thanks Janet

Re: any info on Roane

There was an article in the Westmoreland News dated August 27, 1992. A Joseph Roane provided a oral history of the Roane family during a family reunion. I have the article scanned in my computer (a couple files) which I can send to you if you are interested.

I am looking for information on William Morris Roane, my grandfather. I was always told that he immigrated to the US as a young boy along with two brothers (orphans?). He was adopted by "old man Roane" and given the Roane name.

You can find more information about the VA & PA Roane's by going to http://www.user.shentel.net/pifox/index.html click on the first link.
Love letters

I am looking for Richard S. Roane and Suzanne Fletcher. I have a collection of love letters dating 1967-1968. They were found in a desk that the drawer had been nailed shut. I would like to return the letters to the family. Apparently Richard served in the Vietnam War. Would love to hear from them.
