Hi...

I too have a copy of this document and was curious about John Roark.

From your post, I assume your ancestor is John Brown.

Are you referring to John Brown who was the son of Jacob "The Wagonmaker" Braun of Rowan County?

In regards to John Roark, all I've been able to determine is that there were two in Surry County as early as 1790...John Roark Sr. and John Roark Jr. In looking at the earliest deeds for a John Roark in Surry, it states that he came from the Bethabara Settlement in Winston Salem.

Chris

To be honest I have no clue if my roark line came from austria. I always heard that my great grandma, Willie Bell Roark said that the roarks came from austria. She was the daughter of Henry H. Roark and he was the son of Barney V. Roark. The major reason why i am skeptic about that idea is the fact that my grandma has said that willie bell roark always said crazy stories. So my family has been skeptic on what she said. Any info would be great.

Thank you Doug for your response. My grandmother was a Roark and I have worked many years trying to find out their migration into Kansas. Like I said, my Roarks are from Kansas. I know that the line started in Virginia. Your line was in Tennessee. I live in Clarksville, TN and I am the county genealogists. I have run across Roarks in Tennessee and always wondered if they were related. I had one ancestor Charles Roark who left Kansas and traveled to the Montgomery County, TN area and married into the Rudolph family. I am now trying to locate some info I recorded many graves in St. Mary's, KS that were O'Roark. That is what my grandmother always told me that they spelled it that way and later dropped the O. You can email me at rrubel@att.net. I will try and connect with you by email also.

I would be quite interested if you have found anymore concerning Capt. Patric O'Rourke and his daughter Carrie.
Have had a extremely hard time trying to connect one John Roark (b. 1774 NC or VA) and his four brothers. He may have had a sister named Frances (Fanny) somewhat suggested by letters written in 1835 and 1836 by John's daughter Lucinda.
In Franklin Co., TN, the Gilliams were close to the family of William Roark, the oldest of my ggg grandfather's brothers. There were three marriages involving William Roark's children and Gilliam children. Possibly all three couples moved to Texas after the Texas Revolution.
Interesting facts about Franklin County, TN:
Roark's Cove is/was located near a mountain in a beautiful setting. Some of the area is being developed where families have moved to take advantage of the geography.
Davy Crockett lived in Franklin Co. from abt. 1811-1813.
It is the home of entertainer Dinah Shore.
It is the home county of Phillip Fulmer, recent head football coach at the Univ. of Tennessee.
My ancestry search has stopped with my gggg grandparents, suggested as another John Roark and his will ? Russel.
Doug Roark - retired educator
dougroark@att.net

Randy -
I would be interested in what you've found to date concerning your Kansas Roarks.
Roark, once making an arrival as early as 1690, migrated from Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina in many directions. My Roark Line migrated from Tennessee to Texas in 1834. Some moved into Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and as your Roarks did, others moved into the mid-west. It was all about opportunity.
I would be interested in where your Roark Line in Kansas migrated from
Doug Roark - Retired Texas educator.
dougroark@att.net

Re: Barney Roark - Alabama, Mississippi

I'm responding to the 3 Jun 2009 note by barr1992.
It would be only a remote chance that any of the Roark Family, any branch, would have originated in Austria. However, when Cromwell and the English government was giving the Irish and Scots so much trouble in various ways (English were encouraged to migrate and colonize in Ireland and Scotland as well as the English forcing their will on these two countries to change their traditional Celtic and Gaelic spellings of their names to ones more "English like") Many Irish families left Ireland and settled in Austria, Poland, and Russia. One Rourke served as a colonel in the Polish Army in the fight against Napoleon. Some Rourkes changed their spellings from Rourke and O'Rourke to Roark, Roarke, and Rorke.
Barney, Barnabus, and Barnabas, were given names used by many Roark Families in North America. It might even suggest that most were related. Barney was a popular given name during the early 1800s into the later 1800s in families other than Roark.
I, too, have hit "the old brick wall" in my endeavor to trace my Roark Line before John Roark (b. 1774, NC or VA).
It is suggested that his father was also a John Roark and his mom was an unknown Russel. My gg grandfather was named in her honor, Russel Roark. In my research, I have found several Russel and Russell Roarks throughout the United States.
Someone once reported to the LDS that Roark originated in England, migrating to the area of the great wall (Hadrian's Wall) during the 800s. I don't know the source of this bit of information, but it would tear up a lot of Irish hearts if Roarks, and the several other spellings of the name, were to be accused as being English!
Would enjoy hearing from you.
Doug Roark - retired educator.
dougroark@att.net

I'm trying to determine if "old" William (1760-1841)may have had a child with Mary Everly by the name of Isaac 1806-1857. Isaac Roark married Elizabeth Ellison. Failing this does anyone think Isaac may have been a grandson? I know Sarah Catherine 1799-1868 Williams daughter (Isaac's sister?)married Akies Ellison so I'm thinking Elizabeth and Akies may have been sister/brother or otherwise related. Not unusual back then for a brother/sister of one family to marry a sister/brother in a nearby family.

I would say it's a bad date. According to John J. Roark's excellent book, JOSEPH ROARK: HIS LIFE AND TIMES (Brown Books, 2001), Sarah Roark, the second child of John Roark and Margaret Gross, was born "ca. 1827, married Cleaver Shelton ca. 1846. Died January 3, 1897, buried in the Roark Cemetery."

According to the same book, John and Margaret's fifth child, Eliza Roark, was born 9 June 1833 (she married James A. Pendergrass ca. 1852). Perhaps your source mixed up the children.

Sarah Roark, m. Charles Clever Shelton - child bride or bad date?

Sara(h) / Sallie Roark, b. 1825 - 1833 is on the Mormon's Pedigree Resource File and about 10 Roots Web World Connect data bases as being born 8 June 1833 in James County, Tennessee. (James County was formed in 1871 from mostly Hamilton County, so that's wrong too.)

She is this age on these census entries, for a birth year of:

1850: 23 (1826/27)
1860: 30 (1829/30)
1870: 43 (1826/27)
1880: 55 (1824/25)

8 June 1833 would make her 13 and 1/2 when her first child, Margaret, was born in December 1846 and 12 or 13 when she married. That's possible, but could the 1833 date be a delayed chistening, not a birth date?

Does anyone have a source for the 1833 date?

Here are the census entries, spelled as indexed, not always as they should be spelled.

In 1850 the family is in Rhea County, Tennessee:
Clever Shelton 26, Tenn, farmer
Sarah Shelton 23, Tenn
Margaret Shelton 3, Tenn
William H Shelton 2, Tenn
Elizabeth Shelton 0, Tenn

In 1860 the family is in District 10, Hamilton, Tennessee, PO "Burchwood"
Clever Shilton, 38, Tenn, farmer
Sarah Shilton, 30, Tenn
William Shilton, 12, Tenn
Margaret Shilton, 14, Tenn
Elizabeth Shilton, 11, Tenn
Mary Shilton, 9, Tenn
John Shilton, 6, Tenn

In 1870 the family is in Hamilton Co., Tennessee (PO Long Savannah)
Cliver Shelton, 53, Tenn, farmer
Salley A Shelton, 43, Tenn
Margret Shelton, 25, Tenn
William Shelton, 22, Tenn
Elizabeth Shelton, 20, Tenn
Mary Ann Shelton, 18, Tenn
John Shelton, 17, Tenn
Eliza Shelton, 9, Tenn
Elias Shelton, 8, Tenn

In 1880, Clever uses Charles; they are in James County:

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation
Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace)

Charles Shelton, Self, M, Male, W, 60, Tn, Farmer, SC, Tn
Sarah Shelton, Wife, M, Female, W, 55, Tn, Keeping House, Tn, Tn
Margaret Shelton, Dau, S, Female, W, 33, Tn, At Home, Tn, Tn
John Shelton, Son, S, Male, W, 27, Tn, At Home, Tn, Tn
Eliza J.
Bill,

I found Frances's maiden name by searching Barney V. Roark. Another member listed as RRoark169 has an entry for Barney V. and Frances Bobo. I have also seen Mississippi census records from around 1860 listing Barney and a Frances Bobo. They were living in Western Division, Choctaw County surrounded by other Bobos.

It seems that you and my father are cousins since his grandfather, Francis Marion (Frank), appears to be Barney V.'s son. How are you related to Barney V. and Frances? Do you have any information on his parents? Or hers? I am stuck there.

I can trace my great-grandmother's Latham side a lot better than I can trace the Roark side which is driving me nuts.

Erica

I don't know if you have been able to find information since your original message in 2003, but here is what I can give you now.

Barney married a Frances Bobo (not exactly sure when). By 1870 they had 7 children living at home with them: Sarah E., William A., Francis M. (my great-grandfather), Tempa L., Versie, Alice L., and Barney R.

I also found a Henry H., Ruth J., and Louisiana listed in the 1860 census. I know that by the 1870 census Henry had gone out on his own, but I don't know what happened to Ruth or Louisiana.

William moved on to Texas with his family and Francis stayed in Mississippi until his death in 1928.

Unfortunately, this is all I have at the time. I hope it helps.

Erica

Michael Roark Land - Hawkins County,Tn.

When I was in Hawkins County, Tn. a couple years ago, I found a Roark 3 ringer binder in the library that had a photo of the Michael Roark cabin. Obviously someone found the exact location of his land at one time. Does anyone know where that land would be located, exactly, or directions for getting there? He bought the neighboring land of my Charles Campbell and I'd like to find his land.

Roberta Estes
restes@comcast.net

Hi -

There were a few Samuel Roark's in my line. One Samuel Roark lived in Franklin Co., TN during from around 1815-1835. He was not a brother to my 3 x g. grandfather and his brothers living in and around Roark's Cove, but was related. This Samuel Roark d. in 1835. My 3 x g. grandfather's brother, Barnet, moved into Samuel's old home after Samuel had died. I know of two of Samuel's sons, but that is all. Samuel had sons Samuel and Marquis who moved to Mississippi after old Samuel's death. Land in Alabama and Mississippi was becoming more and more available as the Chickasaw Indians continued to sale their land to the United States. In fact, when my Roark's were in the area, it was known as, for example, Alabama Area, Mississippi Territory, Chickasaw Nation.

Doug Roark
dougroark@att.net

I believe Page Roark had a brother, or so, named Reed Roark. Reed was said to have been born in Georgia, but the family had close SC ties. I have never connected Reed Roark, or Reed W. Roark, with my Texas Roark Line. Inerestingly enough, Reed Roark moved to Walker Co. East Texas probably before my 2 x g. grandfather, Russel Roark had arrived there. Reed Roark was a carpenter by trade. He did a lot of work for my 3 x g. grandfather, William Hardwick Palmer in Walker Co., Texas. In fact, he was listed on a U.S. Census in 1840 or 1850 as living with William Palmer and his family. In 1840, Russel Roark m. Sarah Ann Palmer, William Palmer's daughter. William moved to the Walker Co. area during the 1820s having received a grant from the Mexican Government. When my Roark Family moved to Texas (Coahuila y Tejas) in 1834, they registered in Nacogdoches. Several of them received grants of land.
According to books of registration that I have, a Washington Roark registered with John Roark, Jr. He wasn't a brother of John's but was related. John's daughter Lucinda, while living in MS, wrote her brother William in Nacogdoches and acknowledged the info of learning of Washington Roark's death in Texas in 1835 just months after Washington had received a large parcel of land in Ellis Co. and two other Texas counties. Washington had been a vet of the War of 1812. Lucinda mentioned that she dwas saddened by the news of Washington's death and wuld be even more remorseful had Washington Roark been closer kin to her. At a later date, Washington Roark's direct family claimed the land in Texas. From that point on, I have no info on his family.
John's wife was Nancy Chambliss Roark from SC. She died in 1837 in Texas. John's son, Napoleon B. Roark died in Texas in 1836. Other children who moved to Texas were: William M., Russel, John "A.J.", and Katherine "Kit." Francis Caroline and Lucinda remained in TN when John moved to Texas. Frances was married and Lucinda convinced her father to let her stay with Frances and her husband Whitnel S. Randolph and two children. They all moved to Holly Springs, MS in 1835 where Whitnel became wealthy and Lucinda got married. Lucinda moved to Madison Co., AL with her husband George Lewis and Frances (Fanny) helped Whitnel build a huge plantation in Panola Co., MS not far from Memphis and the Mississippi River.

Doug Roark

Hi Erica -

There were several Barnabas (Barnabus, Barnet's, and Barneys in my Roark Line. My 3 x g. grandfather, John Roark, Jr. (b. 1773) had brothers Barnabus (ca 1775 d. in Henderson Co., TN before 1840, and Barnet (ca 1776 who d. before 1840 in Franklin Co., TN. One of Barnabas' sons, Charles, moved from Henderson Co., TN to Jackson Co., AL around 1830. John Roark, Jr. moved his family from Henderson Co., TN to Texas in 1834.
I don't have very much about the families of Barnabas, Barrnet, and John, Jr.'s another brother named James who stayed in Macon Co., TN when his four brothers moved south. I do have a couple of generations of the oldest brother, William, who was b. in 1766 and d. 1832 in Roark's Cove, Franklin Co., TN. William had several children to move to Texas and Arkansas.
Some Roark's also moved to Louisiana around 1840. I haven't connected these various Roark's. I do have a heap of info on my Roark's who moved to Texas. They apparently all lived in NC and SC prior to the move to northern TN, then southern TN. There were many Roark's in northern TN and N.W. NC from about 1795-1850. Haven't connected with any of them. I have had DNA but haven't yet matched up with any other Roark. I'm a retired high school teacher/coach. I've been at this for 4-5 years. Will helpo you if I can.

Doug Roark (Monahans, Texas)
dougroark@att.net
William Roark's property in Monongalia WVA

I purchased a map from Ancestry, "Johnson's Virginia, Delaware, Maryland & West Virginia 1864" to locate Indian Creek and Buffalo Creek where William Roark (b 1760) owned property. Indian Creek is located in the SE corner of today's Monroe County WV, across from Craig and Giles Counties VA. Buffalo Creek is located in today's Clay County WV and appears to possibly be an offshoot of Elk River. I hope this is helpful.

Roork/Roark Bible

I'm searching for the family Bible that was in possession of my grandmother, Oma Elizabeth Roark York Wiles, in the 1930's. When my grandmother passed, her step-children raided the house before Oma's own children got there. Oma passed away in 1938 in South Gate, California. This Bible had no meaning to Henry Wiles' children and the family would like to have it back. Members of our family spell the last name either ROORK or ROARK.

Erica

Barney V and Frances were married prior to the 1850 census. Probably around 1844.

I am descended from Temperence (Tempie) Roark one of Barney's daughters.

The Roark's are difficult to trace. My theory, which is just a theory is that they originated from Barnabus Roark in SC. There was a Barney Roark in the Alabama census of 1820. There is also a Jesse Roark in Dallas county Alabama but he and his relationsseemed to stay there. There was a migration of some Roarks from Alabama to Mississippi anywhere from 1840 to 1845. I have never been able to pin down Barney's father or mother. Your message was the first hint I have ever recieved for a maiden name for Frances.

Sincerely

Bill

I am not the person you are asking, but do a web search on a "Primative Baptist Association". There is a website that lists the beginning of the puncheon camp church. William was the first Pastor, but there were other roarks that were first members.
