Hi Susan,
my grandfather was from Josef Robers Südlohn, Germany. He is unfortunately died in 1989. His brother Bernhard has a daughter, Maria. I think that her father so my grandfather in 1985 has visited. Was your father a Cossin my grandfather? I would like more information on the Robers line in the United States.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Greetings from the Münsterland.
Manfred Robers

Two brothers and a sister named Robers came from Vreden, Germany during this time period. One brother stayed in Ohio and the brother and sister settled in southern Wisconsin. There are many Robers in southern Wisconsin still today. My grandfather was Bernard Robers. He and Regina Richter Robers had 5 children. My father Robert and his younger sister Margaret Robers Grulich have passed away. Two other siblings live in the Burlington, WI area and one sibling lives in Exeland, WI.

I have Robers family on my mother's side. Elizabeth Robers from Cincinnati married Bernard Augustus Bruns, my maternal great-grandfather. Elizabeth's sisters included Mary and Katherine (Kate) Robers, all of whom lived in Cincinnati and worked in part for the Robers furniture makers.

Do you know whether B.H. Robers is their father or uncle? I've been unable to locate Elizabeth (1858), Mary (1850) or Katherine (1860) in any census for this period.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
D.

Hi Wendy ~

Caught your note about information you have on Burlington, WI Robers. I have a Robers in my tree, details as follows, and I'm wondering if you happen to have her included in your information. Would love to add her parents, siblings, and any other ancestral info on her:

Mary Elizabeth Robers
b. July 2, 1867
d. July 13, 1893
married Peter Klein in Racine County, WI on Feb 16, 1886.

Since the town of Burlington is in Racine County, Wendy, Mary Elizabeth Robers Klein may well be a member of the family you've researched. Any info on her and her ancestry would be much appreciated.

Best,
Kathe C.

My gr.gr. grandfather was Bernard H. Robers. He,his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Hobing and his siblings arrived in New Orleans in 1846 from Germany. He and A.W.
Robers

Susan:
I have been browsing the Ancestry web sites and came across your message on the board.
My name is Maria Brand. I immigrated in 1956. My maiden name is Ahler. My sons, who are now 39 and 35 years of age, asked recently: mom, how did you happen to come to the United States. Well, as it turnes out, it is all John Henry Robers' and Hermina Hobing's fault, because their 3 sons started the trend of going to America, or so I believe. It could very well be that they already followed someone else from our town or even a relative.
I came in 1956.
My brother,Hermann Ahler, who lives in Wis. came in 1954.
My father, Gerhard Ahler, came in the 1920s.
His uncle, Gerhard Ahler, came in the 1880s
to his uncles mamely, Anthony B. Robers, Herman Robers and John Gerhard Robers.
who came in the 1840s.
My father went back to Germany to marry my mother, he stayed.
My ggmother, Christina, was a sister of the 3 brothers who emigrated. She remained in Germany.
I would like to learn if the 3 brothers were the first ones in our family to come to this country. A Mr. Claude Robers, in Burlington, Wis. wrote several stories down, as he remembered them. He states that a John Voelkering and Anthony had sponsored for Hermann. Therefore thy most have been citizens. Voelkering is a common name in Vreden, my and the Robers and Ahler's Hometown. Should you have any inf. regarding passenger lists, day of arrivel or anything else you would like to share, I would be very greatful and return a favour if I can.
Thank you
Sincerely Maria Brand

Robers, Vreden

Kathy
I hope you too had a nice trip.
I did get a reply from Robers, Vreden. Bernhard Robers wrote the following and I try to translate as good as I can. He writes: The Puttman family lived in Vreden as early as 1749. They were carpenders and blacksmiths. As far as Bernhard could determin, there were about 15 family members who emigrated between 1844-1852 to the USA. It would be good for him to know, who of the Robers and Putman were actually in Cincinnati and surroundings. Would it be possible to have some copies of the documents you have mailed to Bernhard, Vreden?
Of the countless Robers in Vreden and the county of Borken, of which Vreden belongs, he could only find:Bernhard Robers,b. Sept.23.1838;Parents:Robers-Tenbus, emigrated to the U.S.A. 1846. Bernhards mother was married a second time to a Hoebing from Suedlohn, county Borken.
As far as Bernhard (Letter writer) could find out, all the men of the Puttman family emigrated to the United States. A Anna Franziska married a Nuenning. They had several children, but they too emigrated to the United States in 1852.
Kathy, this is what he wrote in regard to the Robers.
I had sent the same information to Robers and Ahler in Wisconsin. I have not heard from them.
I looked at your Message board with all the names on it. I can tell you that Strotman and Kuhlman are still well known names in Vreden.
Also, I know of a young man, who has done extensive research of his anchestors, also from Vreden. I believe, that many of Vreden's young men emigrated about at the same time. I will contact him per E-mail and ask him If it is O.K.to give you his address. He lives in the Cincinnati area.
That is all for today.
Maria

Hi Kathy:
Received your message. We will be leaving for Europe tomorrow morning. When I come back in the middle of September I will contact you again. I will also try to get in touch with the Robers family in Vreden. One of them especially is very much interested in his ancestors. I have plenty of pictures of Vreden before it was bombed. This is how I remember it mostly. The town is very pretty but seems almost foreign to me. There are still books or calendars being published of the old town. Stay in touch, or I will contact you in the future.
Maria

Hi again, Please let me know what other things you need me to explain from my original message. Also, please ask your friend in Vreden if he/she knows ANY Puttmann that might wish to correspond w/me!
I tried to write a letter to the Parish priest (in German) asking for any Puttmanns in the town, but I received no reply. I would truly love to get to know someone there!!!!
Bernard H Robers his wife Margaret had at least 8 children: Adeline b abt 1868
Ignatius George B abt 1870
Richard b abt 1872
Edward b abt 1874
John b abt 1876
Emma b abt 1878
Charles b abt 1881
Cecilia b abt Jan 1884
They were all b in Cincinnati. I have a picture of the monument in Cincinnati at the cemetery which is shared by the Robers Puttmann families.

I am still worried about losing all that I have typed in.
Puttmanns Robers in Vreden

Hi Maria, I will make this short, because the computer has hung up on me twice while I typed in tons of notes to you!!! I hope you get this before your trip!!
I have lots of church info for the Puttmanns in Vreden. My parents were in Germany stopped by Vreden to take pictures for me. They told me that the church town had been bombed in WWII. Do you have any pre-WWII pictures of the town?? I would love to see them!!!

B.H. is the way his name appears on the business census records, but I know Bernard is the 1st name, I am guessing that Heinrich or Herman would be the 2nd name.

I can help you w/the arrival dates for the Robers, too. More later!!

Robers, Vreden, Germany

Kathy:
Look under the name Ahler in this program. You will find several messages there under that name. An Ahler, married a Robers in Vreden, Germany. In the 1880s their son Gerhard immigrated to Wisconsin, where 3 of his uncles had immigrated to in in the 1880s?where 3of his uncles had immigrated to about 1848-151. I am in contact with a Robers in Vreden, who is very much interested in Robers's families in the US.
I do not understand some of the abreviations, w/(B. H.??)
Please, give me an answer and I will try to translate the letter and mail it to Robers in Vreden, my hometown. Robers is a very common name in that area, located in north-west Germany, near the Dutch boarder. Let me known soon, because we are leaving for Germany on the 16th of this month. We will not go to Vreden, but we will meet our son and his family in southern Germany.
Have a good day, Maria Brand

Robers Puttmann families- Vreden, Germany Cincinnati, Ohio

My grgr grandfather was Anthony Nicholas Puttmann b Aug 17, 1827 in Vreden, Germany. He immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio abt 1846 for a time had a furniture/lumber business w/(B.H.??) Robers there. I also believe the families knew each other in Germany. Anthony's stepdaughter married a Robers (the partner??). I think the business was in existence 1890-1900 (Anthony died in 1900, but the partner could have cont'd w/out him). I visited the cemetery in Cinti where the Puttmanns Robers have a shared monument. Please be in touch if anything looks familiar!!! Thx in advance!!
