Hi,

According to the University of Montreal, there are about 50,000 Robert living in the province of Quebec these days. All descendants of Louis Robert dit Lafontaine and dit Lapommeraie of the Carignan Salieres Regiment (Loubias company).
Regards
Michel Robert

Since some of the godparents for the children of Israel Ledoux and Edmire Robert are:
Camille Robert & Philomène St Denis,
Edouard Marchand & Petronille Robert,
Camille Robert & Catherine Dupuis,
Narcisse Marchand & Philomène Robert;
The first two Robert are children of Pierre Robert and Flavie Denault, while the last two are children of Camille Robert & Philomène St Denis, I suspect some relationship there. I suspect it is Elmire Robert who was born 31 mar 1843 Napierville.

Catherin ROBERT almost married Donald DOUGLASS aka Barton CRUIKSHANK

I found this and thought you might enjoy it - some of the spelling errors are their's - like Puerto Rico, lol - and I'm sure some are mine.

The Evening Observer (Dunkirk, Chautauqua county, NY) Jan 18, 1912 Page 1,
column 1

BIG INSURANCE WAS COLLECTED
Capt. CRUIKSHANK, Supposed to Have Been Drowned in St. Lawrence River, Has
Reappeared.
UNDER ASSUMED NAME COURTED ANOTHER GIRL
Just Before the Wedding He Was Recognized By Adjt. Gen. Verbeck of N.Y.
National Guard and Has Again Disappeared.
(by United Press.)

New York, Jan. 18 – Vanishing into the night after crushing his canoe so that it would be believed that he was dead – a plot that worked so well that his wife collected $20,000 life insurance – Captain Barton
CRUIKSHANK, of Potsdam, this state, soldier, athlete and educator, wandered about the country for several months and then came to New York as “Donald DOUGLASS”.
Under that name it developed today, he courted Miss Catherine ROBERT of Centre Moriche Long Island, and their engagement was to have been announced shortly. But just when it seemed that he succeeded in assuming a new personality, CRUIKSHANK was recognized by former associates in the State National Guard and he is now once more a fugitive while the girl he leaves is congratulating herself on her narrow escape.
At her home today Miss ROBERT told the story of her engagement to the dashing former guardsman. She was introduced to him by her brother who had met him in a business way and was charmed with his frank and engaging manner. Last Saturday Miss ROBERT accompanied “DOUGLASS” to the Porto Rican steamer and he sailed for Nuguabo, Porto Rico, on business connected with the engineering and contracting establishment he had begun here. Whether he is actually on board the steamer is not known but many here think that he did not sail. They believe he took some other route knowing that he had been recognized and that his DOUGLASS disguise had become known.
CRUIKSHANK told Lowen E. GINN, a New York lawyer, who went to see him after his identity had been established by Adjutant General Verbeck of the State National Guard that he had sunk all of his money trying to establish a military school and decided to disappear and make people think him dead. So in June, 1910 he went canoeing on the St. Lawrence and stove in the side of the canoe so it would be believed he had been run down by a steamer and drowned. Then he made his way to Cleveland and secured a job as solicitor of the National Guard magazine. In this position he attended the various National Guard encampments and finally came to this city where under the name of DOUGLASS he got a contract to do some engineering work for the State National Guard. General VERBECK met him under the name of DOUGLASS and, despite the fact that he had shaved off his long beard and mustache and his hair had turned snow white recognized him as the former officer with whom he had been associated. VERBECK sent word to Mrs. CRUIKSHANK’s attorney. According to GINN, CRUIKSHANK declared he had never been so happy as since he abandoned his family and former friends and he also said that he had been sending money to his wife under an assumed name telling her that he was a friend of her husband.
It is said that arrangements will be made at once to refund the insurance money sold on CRUIKSHANK’s policy.

Bernard Robert - Detroit/Alpena area

I'm trying to find a couple links...see below

Pierre Robert (b. 19 Aug 1671) m. Angelique Ptolomee
son Antoine Robert (b. 19 Mar 1713) m. Marie Louise Becquemont
son Bernard Francois Robert (b. 9 Aug 1756) m. Marie Louise Campeau
son Bernard Robert (b. 18 Jul 1798)

I'm trying to figure out if this is the same Bernard Robert that married Therese Petit (marriage listed as 1844 in Macomb Co. Dibean marriage index) and had a son Bernard born on 2 Apr 1842 (Ste. Anne Detroit Parish records).

I'm also trying to figure out if Bernard (b. 1842) is the same Bernard/Barney that married Sarah Hebert around 1860 and relocated to Alpena, MI (St. Bernard/Ste. Ann Parish records, Alpena).

The dates all fit together so well, but I have been unable to find any documents or sources that would complete the links. There is a Barney Roberts on the Genesee Co. death index (5/9/1929) and also a Sarah Roberts (12/1/1937), and possibly obituaries in the local newspapers. However, I am currently in California and am unable to access either.

Are you seeking info on Pierre's ascendants?
You may wish to consider joining the Robert dit Laf. family history society-they were fundraising to go to France to do more research about 6 months ago. Could be worthwhile!
Hi Shannon!
I appreciate your reply. The Rosalie Arbour that I have in my ancestry shows that she was married to Jean Baptiste Robert (son of Jean Baptiste Chartier and Leocadie Payment dit Lariviere) on October 3, 1864 in St-Alphonse-Rodriguez, Joliette, Qc. Together, Jean Baptiste Robert and Rosalie Arbour have 15 children on record and I have listed them below in order of birth.
1. Octave Robert 1863
2. Paul Robert 10/11/1866
3. Celina Robert 1868
4. Napolean Robert 12/14/1868
5. Rosanna Robert 1869
6. Georgine Robert 1870
7. Emilie Robert 1/6/1870
8. Alcide Robert dit Chartier 1871
9. Sinai Robert 1875
10. Marie Robert 1877
11. Delvia Robert 1879
12. Leonard Robert 1880
13. Arvin Robert dit Chartier 1883
14. Evelina Robert 1885
15. Arthur Robert 1888
The information came from Canadian Census records of 1881 and from the book: Guillaume Chartier sa Famille et ses Descendants by Jean Chartier Robert. That is what I have for them.
Thank you,
Shelley

I do not know a Jules Henri Robert, but my great grandfather, Numa Robert, was born in Switzerland. He was born circa 1848, moved, probably with his parents, to New Orleans, LA. He was a ship's carpenter, served in the Civil War in Wingfield's Third Louisiana Cavalry ( I have photo), and sometime between 1865 and 1868, married Elisa Wildt. Numa and Elisa were divorced, and he married Clementine Clavarie in 1881. Could it be that Jules Henri was Numa's father? Numa had a daughter Henrietta, and a son Henri, who could have been named after his father.

Please respond - I would like to know my cousins

Jo Yates

Robert in Gap, France

I'm looking for my husband's great-grandmother's family. Alice Robert left Gap, France in 1909 with her sister Lea and their cousin Marguerite Ramband (or possibly Rambaud) from Sigoyer. The sisters had a brother named Louis back home and were to meet their sister (married name Sambain) in Antioch, California. I can't find any of the three women in the 1910 US census. I suspect there's a transcription problem since I can find Alice and Lea in 1920.

Any leads would be appreciated, or if you're related and just want to say hello!

There seem to be two Laurents. One born July 30, 1723, and a brother born in 1735. Possibly, the older one died shortly after birth. I cannot see any twins in the family even though there are quite a few in the Robert line. I have the birth of Roland as Dec. 5, 1731. Prudent's birth was in 1732 in my records. I have not followed up on this family so there could be some changes if I looked into it more closely. If you have more information at all regarding the Robert family, I would be happy to receive it. Have you seen David Robert's webpage?

No I have not seen David's page yet-thanks for the tip! I hope to have access to the parish records next week and I will confirm BMD of all of Prudent's children which I will pass on to you. There were two Suzannes, two Laurents (I think the one that lived was Laurent Roland but I will have to sort that out! There were two Marie Françoises as well! The one born in 1711 was known as Marie and the one born in 1724 was known as Françoise! I am so glad those naming practices no longer exist!
Nathalie
Salut! I am interested in the Robert line as one of my Girardins married Hélène Robert in 1903, daughter of Pierre III. I have been able to verify most of the line- save for three of Prudent's (Fourth Generation) sons Laurent, Prudent and Roland. Between the PRDH and LDS, nothing seems to match up. I figured out there were two Laurents, one dying at an early age. The other two boys have conflicting birth dates in Chambly as well as conflicting burial dates. I don't have access to Drouin, so I am hoping someone can untangle these dates for me. Much appreciated. Nathalie

Hi Pat,
No worries I have all the Pierres figured out! It's just the correct birth dates for both Laurents, Prudent jr. and Roland.
Roland I believe was born in 1731.
First Laurent b. 1723. d. 1723
Second Laurent MAY be 1735. M. 1761
Prudent jr.also b. 1735 died in 1735.
Prudent & Laurent may have been twins...
How does that compare with your findings?
Cheers!
Nathalie
PS Renée's second name was actually Isabelle, the french version of Elisabeth.

Re: Robert dit Lafontaine

Fourth Generation Pierre Robert dit La Ponnerai* dit La Pierre* was the first-born son of 11 children born to Louis II & Marie Bourgery of Trois-Rivières in La Mauricie. He was born on the 19th of August in 1671 and baptised at Ste-Famille in Boucherville, Chambly, Québec on the 21st. He tied the knot with Angelique Ptolomée on January 27th, 1698 in Lachine, near Montréal.
He passed away on the 16th of August in 1716 and was buried the next day at Ste-Anne's in (now get ready for this!)
Fort-Pontchartrain d'Etroit,Pays-en-Haut,Nouvelle France. You can put Detroit, Michigan in parentheses if you wish to include the modern day name.

* Some of his siblings used dit Lafontaine others dit La Ponnerai, inluding my ancestor Prudent. You will often see "La Pommeray" which is what La Ponnerai evolved to over the years.

Hope that helps!

Re: Robert

To clarify for others, your question pertains to the Robert dit Lafontaine line. I cannot speak to the accuracy of Pierre's parents, as this is the first time I have heard of their existance. What is your source of this information? That can give me an idea as to the likelihood of its accuracy. Was 'dit la Ponnerai' used for him? Was he born near Breulaufa?
According to Adolphe Robert, Louis (who was a dit-Lafontaine dit-Lapierre), was a Carrignan-Salières soldier, in the Loubias Company when he arrived in Trois Rivières and met the widow Mme. Bourgery (Marie Gendre)whom he became friends with.Louis met Marie jr. and it was love at first sight. But alas she had been promised to another by her mother. Marie snr called Notaire Sévérin Ameau on February 17th 1664 to dissolve said marriage contract to Nicolas Leblanc dit Labrie citing her daughter's youth as just cause. She was about 10 at the time. Now one has to assume Marie snr. was aware of her daughter's youth when she first promised her hand in marriage to Mr. Leblanc, thus that leads me to believe she may preferred the young dashing soldier/artist/shoemaker as her son-in-law!) Again, a new marriage contract was drawn up with Notaire Ameau on Jan 12th 1666 promising Marie to Louis, citing that a wedding would have to wait until Marie was of child-bearing age. Louis much in love had no difficulties with those terms! The marriage was celebrated finally in late 1666-on November 25th. They were blessed with 9 sons and 3 daughters.
NB Louis had been a witness to the marriage of Marie's mother to her second husband on November 12th of 1665.

Re: Modeste Robert Fontaine/Louis Cote

Louis married an Elizabeth Belanger at St. Hyacinthe on Jan. 28, 1845 and had a son Paul. She is the daughter of Pierre Belanger and Appoline Delphine Tetreau. Can you tell me where you found that Louis was born to Louis and Modeste Robert-Fontaine? Is Michel a male or female? Where did you find out when Modeste died? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Dave
