ROCCO, LOUIS RICHARD - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient VIETNAM

ROCCO, LOUIS R.

Rank and organization: Warrant Officer (then Sergeant First Class), U.S. Army, Advisory Team 162, U.S. Military Assistance Command. Place and date: Northeast of Katum, Republic of Vietnam, 24 May 1970. Entered service at: Los Angeles, Calif. Born: 19 November 1938, Albuquerque, N. Mex. Citation: WO Rocco distinguished himself when he volunteered to accompany a medical evacuation team on an urgent mission to evacuate 8 critically wounded Army of the Republic of Vietnam personnel. As the helicopter approached the landing zone, it became the target for intense enemy automatic weapons fire. Disregarding his own safety, WO Rocco identified and placed accurate suppressive fire on the enemy positions as the aircraft descended toward the landing zone. Sustaining major damage from the enemy fire, the aircraft was forced to crash land, causing WO Rocco to sustain a fractured wrist and hip and a severely bruised back. Ignoring his injuries, he extracted the survivors from the burning wreckage, sustaining burns to his own body. Despite intense enemy fire, WO Rocco carried each unconscious man across approximately 20 meters of exposed terrain to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam perimeter. On each trip, his severely burned hands and broken wrist caused excruciating pain, but the lives of the unconscious crash survivors were more important than his personal discomfort, and he continued his rescue efforts. Once inside the friendly position, WO Rocco helped administer first aid to his wounded comrades until his wounds and burns caused him to collapse and lose consciousness. His bravery under fire and intense devotion to duty were directly responsible for saving 3 of his fellow soldiers from certain death. His unparalleled bravery in the face of enemy fire, his complete disregard for his own pain and injuries, and his performance were far above and beyond the call of duty and were in keeping with the highest traditions of self-sacrifice and courage of the military service.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: San Antonio, Texas
Cemetery: Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

Born: 1938 at Albuquerque, NM

Died: 2002

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/rocco...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_R._Rocco

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Hi, The Rocco family that I am looking for did have a son named, Giuseppe (Joseph) -born 9/01/1896 according to the town records in COLLIANO , ITALY (NEAR SALERNO.) I do not know what happen to that family. I do know that Giuseppe's (Joseph) parents were Maria Rosa and Benedetto Rocco. Do you have a Rocco contact person that I can communicate with to find out if your Giuseppe (Joseph) Rocco had roots in COLLIANO? I am trying to find out what happen to that family who was related to my grandfather. I believe there are a number of ROCCO'S throughout the U.S. and the only way to connect them is from the town or region they came from. Thanks, Lee Canevari thedoodles6@comcast.net

Thanks for your reply. Were you able to determine if your Rocco family came from COLLIANO...near
SALERNO? Also, is there any way of finding out if your Giuseppe Rocco who was suppose to be born around September 1, 1896, had siblings by the name of, Angela, Maria, Andida and Gelsomina? Giuseppe Rocco's parents were MARIA ROSA and BENEDETTO ROCCO. Thanks for your interest....Hope to hear from you. Lee Canevari

Thanks for your reply. It is very possible that your Rocco's are related because I do remember my father, Joseph Pecoraro mentioning that he had cousins, etc. that lived in Pennsylvania. If your ROCCO'S are not actually the Bennedetto Rocco who married Maria Rosa Pecoraro than it could be one of his brothers, etc. because I found out that there were other Rocco's from COLLIANO who moved to Pennsylvania.

It is possible that Joseph Rocco could have been the son of Benedetto and Maria Rosa (Pecoraro) Rocco ....especially if they originally came from Colliano and than settled in Pennsylvania. They did have a son named, Giuseppe Rocco. It is also possible that your particular line of ROCCO'S could have very well been from Benedetto Rocco's brother, etc. (I do not know his brother's name.) If you would like, I can give your E.Mail address to Cathy Caprio who runs the COLLIANO & VALVA web site because she tries to help link together the original descendants from COLLIANO AND VALVA. Please let me know if you would like me to connect you to her.
Maria Rosa (Pecoraro) Rocco was the sister to my grandfather, Filomeno Pecoraro from Colliano. It would be nice to have your Joseph Rocco's children's names, etc. For it would certainly help put together some of the history to all our families. Thanks, Lee Pecoraro Canevari

Hi Deborah, I went to www.gens.labo.net to do a surname search for v. anthony's mother. The name Schinva does not show up anywhere in Italy. But the name SCHIAVO does. There are 20 listed in Salerno and 1 listed in Magliano Vetere. There are 7 Rocco's listed in Magliano Vetere. Two of these Rocco's live on the same street (Via Roma) as 3 of my potential Caroccia relatives. Good luck to us all. Regards, Laura

Hi Deborah, I looked up your Rocco at Ellis to find out where in Salerno he was from. The manifest says Magliano and that his destination was his uncle Michele (Michael) Rocco at 13 Park Ave Brooklyn. The information at Ellis on some of my family members indicate the same name/address. My father's cousin, as a young girl, remembers Michele's son Henry and Henry's wife Cecilia and their 2 daughters Ida and Mary.(This would be sometime in the 30's/early 40's if her memory is right). I've really only started to research my family, and I'm not quite certain how this all ties together, but if there is anything I can share with you, ask away.

This is pretty amazing as we have been searching for Uncle Carl's descendants.

We have extensive information regarding the "Ruocco" lineage - the name was changed from Ruocco to Rocco.

I was born in Corning, NY as well as my mother. Please e-mail me back at my personal e-mail and we can exchange information. I am most happy to meet you Michelle.
Looking at my Olimpia's immigration record, she was already married to a Rocco and came from Tuoro. So I am guessing that they lived in Tuoro.

Chris
