We'd need a little more information, such as names, dates, and places, to pursue this. Was Nancy the one you mentioned who died a few years ago? Did you have any other names?
You mention a relative named "Bunny." Would this be Bunnie McKenzie, who has posted queries before regarding a David W. Rockwell in 19th century Colorado? Feel free to contact me at my e-mail address, kwrockwell@yahoo.com

Thomas Rockwell of Arena, Wisconsin

There is a current discussion on this Forum about David William Rockwell, who married Jane Ingram and later settled in Colorado. Mark Rockwell and I are brainstorming on possible leads. Since Jane's sister Catharine married a Thomas Rockwell, he is surely a kinsman of David, though not necessarily a brother. Some of his children went to Colorado as well. Any descendants of Thomas and Catharine who may be online these days, please weigh in with your documentation on Thomas and family, as it may contribute to a solution. Besides this Forum, you may also contact me directly.

Regarding Jane and Catherine (Ingram) being sisters, I have a photocopy of a page from the Ingram bible, and I believe that is the source of my information. Unfortunatly I'm not where the bulk of my documentation is, so I can't check. Also, the Death Notice I have for Elizabeth Van Meter/Ingram D.W. Rockwell is identified as her (Elizabeth) son-in-law. David's Obit does not list his age.

That's good information - thanks. Ken Rockwell and I are planning on publishing an upcoming article in the Rockwell Family Foundation Newsletter on some theories on the possible identity of your David William Rockwell. In the meantime, if you can locate the source of the information for his exact date of birth (possibly an exact age at death from a cemetery record, or a Bible record?), that would be helpful. Also, if you have evidence that the wife of David William's supposed brother Thomas was indeed the sister of Elizabeth Jane Ingram, I'd be interested in that.
Thanks.
Mark

Hi Mark, this is Julie Cornell, we've talked about this line in the past. Wish I had more information. My mother was my original source of his name and date of birth.

You may remember that I had DNA testing done on a male relative who carries the Rockwell name. I am told that based on that DNA test that he does NOT relate to the CN Rockwells. It's very frustrating to me that so many people assume that David and Thomas Rockwell are bothers since they married Ingrum sisters (David - Jane and Thomas - Catherine). Either they were not related or the ancestral information on Thomas is not correct.

The first time I am sure I have correct information is after he surfaced in Central City, Gilpin Co., CO in the 1870 Federal Census. He is referred to as David, David W. or DW on different sources. Even his state of birth is inconsistent, Ohio, Iowa, NY have been used.

If you have any ideas on where I can look I would be happy to have them.

Can you tell me the source of your information that his full name was David William Rockwell, or is that simply an assumption based on the name of a descendant? Also, can you tell me the source record for his exact date of birth being 5 Nov 1833 as claimed by some descendants?
Thanks.
Mark Rockwell

Re: Rockwell's in Iowa, from New York

Assuming you agree that your great-great-grandparents are the ones in Ponca, Nebraska, I encourage you to follow Mark Rockwell's advice. It may cost a few bucks for copies of the record, but the potential payoof is great. Depending on how much the informant knew about the decedant, such records may yield exact birth and death dates, location of each, and parents' names. If you know the exact date of death, provide it during your request, as it will surely help in locating the record. If you don't have it, at least give the year. I managed to find transcripts for their headstones in Ponca Cemetery; Albert's vital years are 1862-1936; his wife Elizabeth M's: 1868-1961.
A good match for Albert (who was 38 in 1900) is found in the 1880 census (free online at familysearch.org): an 18-year-old farm laborer of that name in Kane Township, Benton Co., Iowa, working for an elderly couple, Sylvanus and Theodosia Burton. I don't see any Yount families in the county, but this was only a snapshot of one point in time, and Albert may have moved on, eventually to encounter the Younts.
Best match I see in 1870 is an Albert, called 9 yrs old, son of a William and Adeline Rockwell in Hanover, Chautauqua Co., NY. I'll be quite interested to hear if the death record supports this identification. This family is in a genealogy I have compiled on the Rockwells descending from John Rockwell, a settler of Stamford, CT, in 1641. Let me know when you find out; my e-mail address is: kwrockwell@yahoo.com

Your Albert Rockwell is found in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses in Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska. I'd guess he probably died there, so have you searched for a death certificate, which likely names his parents?
Go to:
http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/ced/decert.htm
to order Nebraska death certificates.

Mark Rockwell

I'm familiar with your Rockwell line which goes back to Josiah Rockwell who died in 1676. Although DNA testing has proven that Josiah is very closely related to William Rockwell and the Rockwells who lived in Fitzhead, England in the 1500s, no records have been found to make the exact connection. My book only covers the descendants of William Rockwell (1591-1640), but you're still welcome to it just the same, just let me know.
Mark Rockwell

No, I don't have a copy. I don't know anything about the family, were they somehow related to Norma Rockwell? I imagine Elizabeth named her daughter after her mother Suannah (Fleak) Lease. What other children did they have? Was Horace a minister and of what religion? Where did they live all their lives? You can email me at dott114029@aol.com and off list and I will send you my address, what is the cost of the book?

Dottie

No, I don't have a copy. I don't know anything about the family, were they somehow related to Norma Rockwell? I imagine Elizabeth named her daughter after her mother Suannah (Fleak) Lease. What other children did they have? Was Horace a minister and of what religion? Where did they live all their lives? You can email me at dott114029@aol.com and off list and I will send you my address, what is the cost of the book?

Dottie
Yes, we have more information on James Bird Rockwell's ancestors and much of it is laid out in the 2005 genealogy by Kenneth W. Rockwell, The Rockwell Family of Fairfield County, Connecticut, and Beyond (kwrockwell@yahoo.com). James Bird's grandfather was James Rockwell who went to Ohio from Connecticut in 1817. His great grandfather was Joseph Rockwell (1740-1825), a cousin of Joseph Rockwell (1739?-1823) who went to Milton. Both Josephs were born and grew up in Wilton, married (within a week of each other) had children baptised there, and participated in the revolution. This has caused some confusion but during this period my Joseph was identified as Jr. and yours Sr. in the Wilton land records and some military records. After the revolution, Joesph Sr. moved on to New York state; he died in 1823 "in the 85th year of his life." Joesph Jr (aka Lt. Joseph) stayed in Wilton and died at 85 in 1825. Remarkable parallels!

According to DNA testing of a male cousin who carries the Rockwell surname, David W. Rockwell b. 1833 d. 1891 does not go back to the CN Rockwells, therefore he cannot be the son of Thomas and Polly Rockwell who I believe does go back the CN Rockwells.

Numerous people have said that David W. Rockwell and Thomas were brothers and it seems to be taken as a given now. If anyone can show me how this can be, please let me know, because I have been trying to find the parents of David W. Rockwell for 20 years.

Hi Ken,

I do have the obit, which is below:

"David W. Rockwell, one of the pioneers of Colorado, died at Denver on Wednesday. Mr. Rockwell had been sick for a year or more and was taken to Denver some weeks ago to see if the lower elevation would not benefit him. He came to Colorado in 1863, and lived at Central (city) until 1872 when he removed to Georgetown. He leaves a wife and nine children nearly all of whom are grown.

Georgetown Courier Saturday April 19, 1891, p. 3, col. 3."

My David Rockwell is not the David Rockwell is who the Judge. I have not found anything that would indicate that they were from the same family, although they were in the same local at the same time.

Please let me know if you find out anything about this line of the Rockwell Family.

Thanks,

Julie Cornell

If you ever find a male Rockwell descendant of Thomas, maybe he'd be willing to do the test. Then maybe it will show Thomas and David to be the same, albeit different from the Connecticut families. There could have been a later immigrant or a name change.
Have you ever found an obituary for either Thomas or David? It might give birthplace, relatives, even parental names?
By any chance do you live anywhere near Denver? When I was there for a conference last October, I was in the Denver Public Library for a short while, and they have a massive every-name card file for names in the major papers. Among the entries were several for Rockwells, including in Georgetown, where Thomas and David lived. Did either of them serve as a judge? There are several entries for "Judge Rockwell." If a prominent person like that, the obit ought to be full of data. I wish I'd had the time to follow through on this.
--Ken Rockwell

Thomas and Nancy Rockwell lived in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn, N.Y., in the late 19th century. They came from Norwalk, CT, where they had two children baptized at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He may have married (2) Mary Grummond. I have heard rumors of Bible records for this family, but have been unable to find where they may have been published. I'd be interested in copies of this genealogical data for my book on the Rockwells. Only a few copies left, and it would be nice to get this data in before the next printing. I'd of course give credit to the contributor in the footnote for these records.
--Ken Rockwell

Connection between Orrin Porter Rockwell and Abraham Lincoln

I found an article that says Orrin Porter Rockwell born in 1813 is a distant cousin of President Abraham Lincoln through his grandmother, Irene Porter that meets to the Gilman line. Does anyone know where that connection is? I'm curious to know how their lines meet.

Willianm Rockwell (b. ca 1838) and wife Catherine (Mack)

I have been tracking another branch of my Mack family: Catherine (Kate) Mack born about 1840 to Charles Garrison Mack and wife Zillah Baker. Catherine married, about 1865, William Rockwell born ca. 1838 in Pennsylvania. Both of them apparently d. after the 1910 census & before 1920 census.

Can anyone fill me in on when they died and when/where they were married? I am thinking it is possible they were married in Geauga County, Ohio?
