Hi Sue
I am helping a lady trace her family tree and have come across a Mary RODD b.abt 1845 who married a Arscott CANN in Devon in the mid 1800's. He used the name Henry in his later life. Have you come across anyone by these names?
If so please reply and maybe we can swap info.
Be well stay well
David

Hello Sue

Just to let you know that I today came across the Baptismal entry for GEORGE RODD. It took place on 11 June 1820 at St George, Bloomsbury, in Camden, now London, which confirmed the father was JAMES RODD and the mother was PATIENCE RODD.

ELLEN RODD (RUDD) - I came across her marriage to Robert Summerbell on 25 December 1885 confirming her father as James Rodd, a carpenter. There were several marriages on that Christmas Day. I found them on the 1891 Census but could not find them on the 1901 Census. However they show up on the 1911 Census with two children living in St Pancras in London.

That's it for today.

Best wishes

Roland

Hello Sue

I've just started to read my mail today and was delighted to have your reply with useful information. I had one more shot this morning at trying to unearth Hilary/Henry Rodd born 1866 but couldn't come up with anything even though I thought he may have done a runner to the USA or Australia. Whatever the information doesn't appear to be there at the moment and I may have to visit the Camden Libraries or The Metropolitan Archives to see what they might hold. Its strange that May born 1894 seems to have disappeared with him.

I'm glad you think you have found Ellen, born 1869, because this one had been driving me crazy.

Today I came across the baptismal entries, all in London, for Alice Ellen, May Peace Humphries and Dorothy Sibyl (Sybil in the Register) which gave the latter's date of birth as 13.07.1899.

I will probably order the birth certificate for Ellen, born 1869, and double check for a baptismal entry as well.

Thanks again. If I find out any more I will be in touch.

Best wishes

Roland

Hello again Roland,
I think our last messages must have crossed as they were sent at about the same time. Thank you for the further information on this Rodd family, I will add it all to my database. I would love to link all the Rodd families in the database together one day but at present I seem to have about 50 distinct families.

I can add a little more to your information:
James Rodd (married to Patience Austin) buried 3 October 1835 Chard age 62

Further children of James Rodd and Patience Austin, all baptised in Chard:
SUSANNA AUSTIN RODD born 17 June 1805 baptised 2 January 1807 married Mark Brookman 8 October in Bristol.
JOHN AUSTIN RODD baptised 2 January 1807 married Elizabeth Steel in 1864 in the Bristol area, died 1872.
ANN RODD baptised 25 October 1809

Birth date for JAMES who married Susan Eyers 4 August 1813 and baptism date - 31 October 1813.

Also possibly one further son for James and Patience is GEORGE born around 1820 who was buried 7 April 1825 in Chard

John Austin Rodd and Elizabeth Steel had at least one child – AUSTIN PEARCE RODD born 1866 in Bristol area.

Like you, I hadn’t been able to find a birth for Ellen born 1869/70, but I think I have just found it on the GRO registered under Rudd:
ELLEN PATIENCE RUDD born 3rd quarter 1869 Pancras registration district.

I hope this information is of interest to you.
all the best
Sue

Further to my note of earlier today, I give the family tree as far as the Rodd side is involved, starting with JAMES RODD, a boot maker, born in 1777 in Chard in Somerset, England, who married PATIENCE AUSTIN in 1804 in Chard. They had at least two children, JAMES born about 1814 in Chard and Elizabeth christened 31.03.1816 in Chard.

JAMES (b 1814) married SUSAN EYERS on 17.03.1861 in Chard.
Susan was born in Portsmouth, the daughter of Samuel Eyers, a painter, about 1831. James died in 1885 and Susan I think died in 1892. They had 4 or 5 children and at least brought up 5.

The five were:
Patience Peace b 29.05.1856, died 14.12.1864
Austin George James b 18.06.1858, died 15.01.1865
Ellice Susan b 25.07.1861, possibly known as Alice and possibly died 12.08.1876.
HILARY AUSTIN MARK b 25.03.1866
Ellen born about 1869/70 but not yet confirmed.

HILARY sometimes known as Henry married EMILY SUSAN HUMPHRIES who was born in Bath, in 17.07.1862. The marriage took place on 08.05.1887. This was Emily's second marriage, the first one being to J H Trusson on 30.09.1883 by whom she had one child, Emily Mary Trusson born 12.05.1882, before they actually married.

HILARY and Emily had 6 children:
Alice Ellen, b 12.04.1892, m 16.08.1913, d 21.11.1981
May Peace Humphries b 26.01.1894, who is thought to have died young but so far no evidence.
Austin James b 31.10.1895, d 25.07.1987 - not known whether he married
Violet Gertrude b 06.02.1898 and married Albert H Sitch in 1938
Dorothy Sibyl b abt 1899, m H J A Chartenet and remarried about 1948 William R Gaskin
ROSE MILLICENT, the one you are interested in was born 11.07.1900 in London, and married 3 times:
in 1939 to Alfred George Hayday
in 1944 to William J Connor
in 1957 to Eric R Trollope
Rose died in 1991.

Emily Susan above was my Great Grandmother and therefore her daughter Emily Mary was my Grandmother.

I hope this is all helpful in your research.

If I can find out any more about HILARY/HENRY I will let you know. If you have any useful information then I would like to know too.

Best wishes

Roland

Hi

Although I am not the original poster of the message, I have been compiling a database of Rodds for many years. I now have approximately 4000 names on it, mostly Rodds born in the UK.

I would be interested in information on Rose Millicent Rodd to add to my database. I know her parents were Hilary Austin M Rodd and Emily (I would love to know her surname as I cannot find it on FreeBMD) and also what happened to Hilary Rodd after 1901 as Emily appears to be without him in the 1911 census and the children scattered.

I would be very grateful if you would share this information with me if you have it. Thankyou.
regards
Sue

Yes, I believe this is the same couple. The Rodd and Pelky families were listed next to each other in the Maumee census. Timothy was living with David Rodd and am trying to connect him as a brother of David but French Families does not list Timothy as a son of Charles Rhodes, father of David Rodd.

I do not know of a John Rodd and Sarah, nor of any William Rodd of that date.

The Trebartha family has

Vice-Adm John Tremayne Rodd (1769-1838) who married Jane Rennell in 1809;
Adm John Rashleigh Rodd (1816-1892) who married his cousin Wilhelmina Rodd in 1852.

Also William Edward Rodd died an infant in 1734;
William Rodd another infant died in 1780.

There are no other Johns or Williams that I know of in the 18th or 19th centuries. So, in spite of the proximity of Liskeard, etc to North Hill, there seems to be no connection, I’m sorry to say.

These landed families tended not to mix with the rest of the population, except when having affairs ! My great-grandmother was the result of such an affair in 1861 at Trebartha between the squire’s son home from university at Easter, and a kitchen maid !
I am looking for Rodd relatives to Granny or Old Mother Rodd, who was an Indian woman who lived on the Sarnia Reservation in Sarnia, Ontario in the 1800's, but traveled to Port Huron, Michigan and was a well known herbalist in the area. She married a half-breed, by the name of, I believe, Alexander Rodd, who was killed during the War of 1812, by Indians at the Black River bridge in Port Huron, Michigan. My husband is a direct descendant of hers, but we are having trouble locating her actual name and lthe names of her descendants. Please help!

Sue....
The only information I have gathered is Elizabeth Rodd.....b. abt 1769...and possibly in Va.?? She married William Smith in Surry Co., N.C....and they had a son named Catlett Smith. Although, very old info. I had obtained from a family tree yrs., ago...states that Catlett Smith was born in Scotland around 1785. Wish there was some way to confirm where my Elizabeth came from. Thank you so much for getting right back to me. doodlesattheboo@yahoo.com

Hi Sue....

Thanks for getting back to me, so quickly. The names of Wm. Smith and Eliz. Rodd's children are as follows....Kelly, Selah, James, John, Peyton, Catlett, Milly and Mary. The line for Wm. Smith has been traced back to the mid 1600's, but I have nothing but a possible b.d. of "abt. 1769", for Eliz. Rodd. Thanks for your interest...I really appreciate it. Will be spending this afternoon, working on my "tree"....so, I will be at the computer, until later, today...in case you have any additional info..

Karen

Sue...Sorry I have taken soo long in replying to your query. I really have no idea if one of your Elizabeth Rodd's may be the one in my lineage. I am wondering if your Elizabeth's ( baptised in 1768)....might be who I am trying to find. It's strange that I can not move past her....in the RODD line. This makes me think that quite possibly...they (the Rodd's) migrated prior to 1769. I do know that she married my ggggg grandfather...Wm. Smith...in 1790, in Pittsylvania Co., Va.. They had at least eight children (Catlett Smith...my line). I am struggling to keep this family line moving...with very little direction. I would appreciate any info you can give. Thanks.........Karen Smith Corridori

Hi

If you have already, it might be worth sending for George and Sarah Ann's marriage certificate, 1st quarter 1897 Fulham registration district reference 1a 313. This will give his father's name.

I have a large database of Rodds (almost 4000), although I am not directly related to your George. Like you I have found no trace of him before his marriage and in the 1901 census.

I don't have any record of a Herbert Rodd having children in England or Wales before 1885.

I you do make any progress, I would love to know, and might then be able to help further.

Sue

Karen

Some unusual forenames, aren't there, quite modern sounding.

Mary is the only parents name that matches in the four Elizabeth Rodds that I have born around 1769, which doesn't help much, does it. You say you can trace William Smith's line back to the mid 1600's, did any of the children's names occur in his tree? Do you have the full details of William Smith and Elizabeth Rodd's marriage. Were there witnesses names mentioned?

Sorry I can't be of more help, I admit I'm stumped.
Sue

Karen

What were the names of the children of William Smith and Elizabeth Rodd, this may give a clue to her parents names as children were very often named after their grandparents.
Sue

Hello

Do you think that your Elizabeth Rodd came from England.

I have a large database of Rodds, 90 per cent from England,
and have the following Elizabeth Rodds born around 1769 on it:

Elizabeth Rodd baptised 28 February 1765 in Bideford, North Devon, father Thomas Rodd, mother Mary (Langdon, I think).

Elizabeth Rod baptised 15 May 1768 in Portland, Dorset, father Robert Rod, mother Elizabeth Wallis.

Elizabeth Rodd/Radd baptised 15 August 1768 in Holsworthy, North Devon, father William Rodd/Radd, mother Mary.

Elizabeth Rodd, baptised 8 September 1771 in Menheniot, Cornwall, father George Rodd, mother Elizabeth Burly.

I don't know what happened to any of these ladies, they might have emigrated abroad, or died in childhood. I know a little more of the families of the second and fourth Elizabeths in the list and the Rodds from the Bideford area in North Devon were mariners and had connections with the US.

Sorry I can't be of more use, but this might give you something to go on.
best wishes
Sue

George Rodd 1873 Brentford Middlesex

Can anyone help me out? I'm looking for any information on George Rodd, born in 1873, Brentford, Middlesex. I can't find any records until 1901. I know he married Sarah Ann Richmond in about 1897 and was rumoured to be a valet for Lord Tennyson, but i can't find any details whatsoever for any other period, nor can i find any details on his parents, i think his father was called Herbert and was a 'traveller' apparently, any help would be most gracefully recieved.

Hi Sue,
I managed to get a copy of his marriage certificate, which listed his father as 'Herbert DEC'd' and an occupation of traveller. I have records of where he lived, worked, died etc but nothing in the way of birth details, i did source 2 census records from 1871 (Brentford Union Workhouse) & 1881 (Kidderminster Union Workhouse) which showed the same George Rodd, but when i contacted the records office in Kidderminster they had no record of him apparently, i have been unable to find any contact details for the Brentford workhouse. I know he was born about 1867/8, but despite employing a professional, i have been unable to find any birth records or any other details on his parents. I'm somewhat perplexed now as i seem unable to persue this any further :-(
