Forward from the Roden list with permission....

Sue et al,

I am happy to contribute my 2 cents to the Roden saga, and see if we can't
provide a bit of input to the Roden list.

John Roden is my 3rd great-grandfather. He married Mary E. Mills 22 December
1857
Lawrence Co. Alabama. The marriage certificate shows his name spelled:
Rhoden. He had two children, Clarissa and Lee (more details below). It
appears that he went to the Civil war in the 16th Alabama Regiment (see
below), but whether or not he returned is a mystery. I have a marriage
certificate of James M. Randolph to Mary Elizabeth Mills, Lawrence Co.
Alabama 26 March 1865. The 1870 Federal census shows:

(living in the house of J.M. & Mary E. Randolf)

Roden,Clarissa 10 F AL

Lee A. 9 M AL

What is unclear to me is whether or not John came home from the war, was
killed, or moved somewhere else. In either case his Mary re-married. I would
also of course like to know who his parents were, because that will probably
tie me in to the rest of the Roden clan in Lawrence Co. at this time which
has already been extensively researched. From the below Federal records it
appears to me that there may have been 2 John Roden's in the 16th Alabama
regiment: a John W and a John M. We have sent off for Alabama state records
and are awaiting the results.

Gory Details:
------------
Children:
Clarissa J. Roden b. 1860. m. John L. Canup 02 September 1883. Lawrence Co.
Alabama

My 2nd. great-grandfather - Lee Anderson Roden b. 1861 m. Sarah M. Kerby 30
September 1881 Lawrence Co. Alabama.J. H. McDonald was judge of probate. W.
A. Agee was the minister for marriage. Lee A. is buried at Jones Chapel
Cemetery, Moulton, Lawrence Co. Alabama. The tombstone says: Lee A. Roden,
Born 1860. The name Anderson comes from the obituary in Moulton Advertiser -
Thursday, March 16 1939 which says he was 78 years old making the birth date
1861. The 1870 census records also show him to be 9 years old.

Even more Gory Details
