Rodgers family in Champaign County, Illinois

I am looking for information and other researchers interested in the Rodgers family in Champaign County, Ill. Wilson Rodgers and his wife Massey settled in Champaign County between 1870 and 1880. They originated in Fayette/Madison counties in Ohio. Wilson and Massey are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Urbana. One son, Simeon, served in the Civil War with the 113th Ohio regiment then moved with his parents to Illinois. He and his wife Clara are buried in the GAR cemetery in Homer. Wilson and Massey had several children, including a daughter Lydia Ann who remained in Ohio where she married. This is my wife's ancesteral line.

Frances was born in 1812 in Wake Co., NC., family moved to Monroe Co., KY in 1814 then to Carroll Co., TN in 1823. Some say she died in 1874- I haven't seen that proof. She was the daughter of Amos C. Joyner and Easter Jent. She was two years younger than my G grandfather William. She had 10 siblings. I may be reached at hdjoyer@windstream.net for further discussion if you wish.
Harold Joyner
Hugh's mother Ellen was living with them and they survived the 1908 earthquake, however, cannot find any info beyond that. No children were listed in the 1900 census. Are there any?

Tammy,

While I have no information on who you were looking for, you have mentioned a few names that are familiar to me and are unique.

My husband's grandfather was a Willie Lee Rodgers (born Texas/died Texas in 1926). He was married to Cordie Lewellen Rodgers and they had 5 children. One was a Zella.
I'm wondering if these families were related in some way. Our Zella was born 1919 in Oklahoma.
Census records show that our Willie Lee's father (unknown name) was born in Alabama.
Based upon your records - could there be a family link somewhere? Zella is an unusual name!

Thanks - Bobbi
juviemom@bellsouth.net

George Rodgers-PA

The following appeared in my research from PA:
The "Plaingrove: History of its Early Settlement" by Rev. R. McCaslin says in part that George Rodgers came from county Armagh, Ireland, about the year 1790, and settled first in Washington county. Thence, he came, about 1798 and settled on lands now owned by....... I don't have copy of the next page (40).
There was also a Wlm Rodgers who was the brother of Betsy Rodgers whose husband Alex. McCracken died on his return home from Alabama: she died soon after (1801-1802) from shock and was one of the first to be buried on the old Denniston farm, Springfield Twp but very near to Washington and Plaingroce Twp. (Lawrence County History).

Wlm Rodgers was a sponsor (listed in the Crawford county Naturalization Abstracts) for my Adam McCracken, a native of Ireland and was cert. 17 Oct 1802. Adam's daughter,
Jane McCracken (b. 1779 Ireland) married a George Rodgers.
On the Taxables Table List for Mercer County 1800 the following Rodgers are listed:
Rodgers, John, Irwin 1800
Rogers, George Jr Coolspring 1801
Roders, George Sr. Coolspring 1801
Rogers, John Salem 1801
I hope this helps.

Re: Ro(d)gers of Cub Creek, Lunenburg Co., VA

Since my last post on this family, I have been in touch with Clarke Rodgers who has followed it for years. He believes that the line he and I descend from traces back to a Thomas Rodgers, born ca. 1700 (my estimate). His son, Andrew, appears to be the father of (1) William and (2) Thomas Rodgers who are found in the Cub Creek Settlement Area on Turnip Creek, Charlotte Co., VA in 1748.

(1) William married Margaret Caldwell, the daughter of "Cub Creek John" Caldwell. Their children were Ann, Margaret, Robert, Andrew and John.

(2) Thomas married, we think, Elizabeth Jane Carr (Kerr) and had Andrew, Benjamin, Thomas, Samuel, John, James, and Nathaniel.

These names were much used in the line.

From Cub Creek I see places like Halifax Co., VA; Laurens Co., SC; Bourbon Co., KY; Maury Co., TN figure in with the next few generations. After that, I have not tried to research. I would not be surprised to find them in the states you mentioned.

I can't say whether any went to Weakely Co., TN.

These early settlers were part of the Presbyterian Scotch immigration from Northern Ireland, and there appear to be several families of Rodgers (Rogers) in this general area of Virginia making tracing a challenge. I think some of the later Rodgers men are found in the rolls of the western Virginia militia companies that were called out for Lord Dunsmore's War (1774) but I haven't established a proven link.

I see Henry appears in this family line, but as far as I can tell, it was used as a middle name.

Certainly, I don't think I am on top of the Rodgers/Rogers genealogy. Not by a long shot. Connie Willis was very good, but she has not posted for maybe five years, a bad sign I am afraid.

If you think there is something I can help with, let me know.

Robert Jadwin Ballantyne
Hi, there, I'm on a fishing expedition. Seems I had relatives from TN and I'm wondering if you have information regarding Thursey's family before she married? (parents, siblings?) My gg-grandfather was John David Rodgers and on some of the census sheets, he was born in TN and on some he was born in VA, but I do know that one of his sons died in Kingsport, TN and that there is a Rogersville, TN which we may (long shot probably) be related to the founder. I'm looking for John David's parents, John L. and Elizabeth. They would have been born in early 1800. Hope someone can help.

Thanks for the reply. One in my DNA group (that I have an exact 34/34 match to) has an ancestor, Joseph Rogers b. 1788 prob. in Laurens, SC. The book I mentioned, William Cleveland Rodgers, "A History of the Rodgers Family",Tulsa, OK 1968 follows the line of William's son, John b.1746 Lunenburg, VA. There is a list of descendants(living in 1968) at the end of the book, but I have not tried to reach them.

I would like to also contact Clarke Rodgers. Would you give him my email address: lrodgers63@hughes.net.

One in our group has a paper trail back to 1635 Jamestown to a John Rogers b. 1617 England. She traces the line to Surry, VA then to NC and GA-MS. Our DNA appears to be Scotts-Irish, so we haven't reconciled this. How do you relate to the Ro(d)gers?

I found a book about this family. Did any of the descendants move to NC and Weakley, TN? None of the Henry, TN Rodgers match my line. I'm in a group of 30 Ro(d)gers with closely matching Y-DNA. Most have ancestors from VA-NC-TN/AL/MS/GA.

Might be useful to exchange info.

Larry Rodgers, g-g-grandson of Jacob C. Rodgers b. 1805 NC, moved to Weakley bef. 1827.

Hi,

I read your message and the messages that were sent to you by Mickey and Christy. Not sure but I am searching for a John Rodgers b. abt. 1775, NC and don't have a wife's name but believe she was also born about 1775 in Rockingham, NC. It is told they had about 10-12 children, my gggrand-father Houston (Hugh) Rodgers was born 10/30/1822 in Dade Co., GA and he married Elizabeth Rebecca (Becky) Amos. It is told he traveled west with 1 or 2 of his brothers and camped for the night somewhere in AR at a river. The brothers, wives, and children got into an argument as to not saying they were indians but mexicans. If any of this or these names sound familiar please E-mail me at chrokecat@aol.com and put in the subject line "Rodgers History". Thanks, Carol .... I look forward to hearing

Irish Origins of Joseph ROGERS (1764-1833), founder of Rogersville, TN (State of Franklin, western N. Carolina)

Can anyone point me to a good history or genealogy of Joseph Rogers (1764-1833), founder of Rogersville (now Tennessee - previously in State of Franklin, western North Carolina)?

I am particularly interested in his Irish origins. Some sources state he was "from near Cook's town" in County Tyrone (historical province of Ulster, Ireland (currently Northern Ireland).

Rogersville was originally settled by grandparents (or great-grandparents?) of David "Davy" Crockett. They apparently were from Ulster as well - Co. Derry/Londonderry or Tyrone.*

It is my understanding from a historian in the Tyrone area that when in Ireland, Joseph and his forebears were known by their original Irish Gaelic surname Mac Ruaidhrí, ‘son of Ruaidhrí’ (McCRORY, McRORY). ROGERS is the Anglicized form of this Gaelic surname.

I look forward to your replies.

- - -
Footnote
*County Londonderry was formed in 1613 and was composed of the County of Coleraine and the barony of Loughinsholin which was then part of Co. Tyrone.

Rodgers in Illinois & Tennessee

Hello. I'm looking for information about some Rodgers' that moved from Tennessee to Crawford County, Illinois. The trail runs cold with Jonathon J. Rodgers est birth date: 1814 in Tennessee. He was married to a "Nancy" est. birth date: 1818 in Kentucky. They had 7 children; Charles A. (1837), Sally M. (1840), Marley W (1843), Rebbecca E. (1844), Jackson L. (1846), Jonathon J. (1848), William (1849). It appears that the family moved to Illinois after the children were born as they were present in Crawford County for the 1850 Census. If there is anyone who has any additional information on this family and where they came from I would greatly appreciate it! I suspect that this line immigrated to the States from Scotland, but I have no idea when or from which part.

That was Francis Pruitt Tribble Sr. There have been many places in the Tribble family trees that have attached F P Sr's marriage to F P Jr because she was very young. Francis Pruitt Tribble Jr. was the one that was married to Maggie Rodgers in 1884. Francis Jr died June 9, 1891 and then she married Blalock in 1893. I am puzzled because I know that she was married to Tribble, Blaylock and Dickey but I am not sure about This W E Denham but it could be possible because the date on that marriage was 1897. In the 1900 Census she was in Texas and was listed as Maggie Tribble with her five children. From this I assume that she married Dave Dickey in Texas after 1900 but I have not verified this. So far, I have not found her in any census since 1900. I am sure that she moved to Oklahoma before 1910 because her youngest child Major Blaylock died in Frederick OK in Jan of 1912. Thank you for the address and telephone number to Tallahatchie Co. My dad had told me about Mr. Dickey (as he referred to him). This leads to family stories that are not what is important to finding Maggie Rodgers. As a matter of fact. thinking about it my dad had bought his first car when she was married to Dickey and my dad was born in 1910. So I think she married Dickey much later than I was thinking about. Now that I thought about this, I will have to go back and research this more. Again, thank you for the information and also jogging my memory. Nelda

I am researching to find information on my ggrandmother Maggie E Rodgers or Margaret Elizabeth Rodgers. I just found the 1870 Census for Lake, Scott County with a Rodgers family. Father J M, Mother D W, Children William 15, M 9 F 11, Elaine 7, and Charles 2. Does anyone have any information about this family? The girl M age 9 would be about the right age for the Maggie that I am trying to find. I would appreciate any information that might help me find out if this family could be the one that I am looking for. Thank you in advance for any info that you might have.

Nelda, I found something interesting in the marriage records for Tallahatchie Co. - F.P. Tribble married Elizabeth Carthage 3/17/1889. Do you suppose he and Maggie were divorced? And as you say, there is the record of M.E. Tribble marrying F.R. Blalock 7/21/1893.

I saw the other Tribble lady's marriage, but it was written "N.E. Tribble" in the records I saw. I thought maybe she was related to F.P.

The county clerk's office in Tallahatchie Co. may be able to provide copies of the marriage licenses. Their address is P.O. Box 350, Charleston, MS 38921-0350. Phone # is 662-647-5551. I think I would call first to check availability and cost, etc.

Good luck!!

Sandra

Re: Irish Origins of Joseph ROGERS (1764-1833), founder of Rogersville, TN (State of Franklin, western N. Carolina)

Hi There,

I'm interested in anything you find on the parents and grandparents of Joseph Rogers as well.

My Rodgers line lived in Greene County, TN from the 1770's to the 1810's. They originally came from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and before that from PA.

Reading Joseph Rogers's biography, this is the same way of travel that mine and his family took.. going from PA>VA>TN. Same time periods too.

I believe the progenitor of my line to be a James Rodgers who came over from Tyrone county in 1718. Cousins have told me he was married to a Mary McPherson and later an Ann Simm, but I have no documented proof of that. Anyway.. he came from Tyrone county and settled somewhere in PA. He eventually married and later moved to the Augusta Co, VA area and died there in the 1760's. I do know of three sons of his: James "Sr" (whom I descend from), Thomas and also a John. James "Sr" and Thomas migrated from Augusta/Botetourt counties in VA to Greene and Washington counties in TN together between 1772 and 1774.

Nick M. Gombash
nickmgombash@yahoo.com
