Looking for info on David Roff who was married to Sarah Powers. They were parents of Hannah A. Roff, born 1818 in Peekskill, NY. Also parents of Charles Roff, born about 1821. Hannah A. Roff married Michael Start, Sr. They resided in Brooklyn, NY. They had 14 children. One of them was the baseball player for the Providence, Grays, Joseph Start. The Start Family burial plot is in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn.

Hi I saw you post and I am also kin to Fanny Bell Odom, who was my great great aunt, I am also looking for any information on Hershel and Harvey Roff who lived in Kirbyville, Texas. Hershel was married to Annie Gilley..They use to play music and mabe even had a small radio station there. I believe there is a connection to Joseph Madison Roff and Fanny Bell Odom. My father Dan Odom, son of Daniel Webster Odom, use to go to Kirbyville alot to visit them and play music with them so I am just interested in the connection if it is actually kin or not. Am researching my grandfather, Harry Otis Hall, born Hammondsport, NY, Sept. 1895. Mother was possibly Mary Burd. My aunt, Betty Dionne, tells me she has gotten cards from some Roff's who were good friends of the Hall's in Hammondsport. Do you know or have any info that could help in my search. My Grandmother is Leah Jo Roff, daughter of Charles Liptka Roff and Lizzie Pamelia Rader. Her brother Charles L Roff was a lawyer in OK and wrote a book called We Were Young Together and I recently found out there's a sequel: A BOOM TOWN LAWYER In the Osage 1919 - 1927. Has anyone seen this book?

looking for Roffs that may have married into the Rogers family.
In the 1700's in Westchester County N.Y. there was a
Henry Roff and Christopher Roff
Also a Daniel Rogers and Wm Rogers.
All served in the Westchester County , N.Y. 3rd militia.
We had a relative in the late 1800s with "Roff" as a middle name.
We have traced our Rogers back to New Jersey(New Brunswick) to 1802.
Just hoping there may be a connection.

I hope you are still online - I am researching Lake Co.,OH Civil War veterans - I have a Thomas Roff who was one of the 1st volunteers for the 7th Ohio Vol. Infantry in April 1861. Company records state he entered the service June 7th, 1861 for 3 yrs. He was wounded in the right leg, by grapeshot during the battle of Dumfries, Va., Dec. 27th, 1862; discharged for wounds at Wash. D.C. March 9th, 1863. Military records at ancestry.com state he was age 31 when he enlisted, which birth year would be about 1830. I just located your message and then checked 1860 census for Lake Co.,OH - whoohooo ROLF, Thomas age 30 b. New York, Melissa age 20 and Lilla age 1 living in Mentor, Lake Co.,OH. Is the CORRECT spelling Roff or Rolf ?

I think that I may be able to help with the parents' names. John Roffe (1811-1886) and Ann (1811-?) were the parents. The parents of John were Richard Roffe and Mary Bloodsworth of Kettering, UK. My great grandmother was Emma Roffe Coulter and is the sister. The family was originally from a town in England called Wittering. They were decendents of Huguenots from France and were shoemakers. It appears that at least part of the family returned to England after living in the US for decades.

I made a mistake, there are two Earnest Roff's in the family. I have a great uncle Earnest B. Roff and a great great uncle Earnest Roff. Earnest B. "Burt" Roff is the son of George Washington Roff.

I have information on Florence LeNeve Roff(Ingram)Cooley, B.3/14/1898 in NY, D.1992 in MD, and her descendants. I am her great-granddaughter by marriage(I am a descendant of her 2nd husband, Raymond J. Cooley, not Florence). I visited Florence frequently as a child and teen. Would be interested in any family history, especially "LeNeve," since that is my middle name.

My great-grandfather was Raymond Cooley. He had a daughter, Lillian, by his first wife, and married Florence after his first wife passed away. I am Lillian's granddaughter. Florence was born 3/14/1898 and died in 1992. She had 2 children by her first marriage, 2 boys named Kenneth & James Ingram. She and Raymond had a daughter, Florence Ramona Cooley (Sullivan) Harris, who is still living. I visited Florence often as a child and teen in Suitland, MD, but Raymond died before I was born. As I remember, Florence may have been born in NY, and lived most of her life in DC/MD. I have information about Florence & Raymond's descendants. Although I am not a direct descendant, I would love to have info on the Roff ancestors, and Cooley--if you have that, too.

There was an old forum message "we know his (Carl Rees) grandparents were William D. and Elizabeth Hart of Marion County" My husband is related to Ivy Rees out of Marion County Iowa. Carl was the son of Alfred E. Rees, brother of John Homer Rees. My husband's family came out of John Homer. Alfred was named after his father Alfred. The line for me ends with Thomas in 1780. And then this sad note-

"Fifteen Year Old Boy Instantly Killed When Gun Is Accidently[sic] Discharge

The people of the Garwood community were grieved to learn of the sad accident which occurred Monday afternoon in which Orvile[sic] Reese[sic], fifteen years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Reese[sic], who live about two miles from Garwood, was instantly killed by the accidental discharge of his gun while out hunting.

He, with his two younger brothers, Boyd and Melvin, was hunting frogs on the canal near the re-lift. In attempting to remove a board with the butt of his gun, while holding the barrel in his hand, the gun was discharged, the full load of bird shot striking him in the side of his head.

Orville[sic] was a splendid boy, a quite well-behaved and a splendid working lad was well liked by all who knew him.

The funeral was held at Rock Island [Myrtle Cemetery] Tuesday afternoon, services being conducted by Revs. Mr. Ryan and Mr. McLaughlin.

He is survived by his parents, his two brothers and two sisters, Misses Opal and Esther, to whom the people of the Garwood section, and all who know them, extend sincere sympathy in their hour of deep sorrow.

Later accounts received by the Headlight from Garwood concerning the sad accident, which was obtained by a Headlight reporter from the two smaller brothers who were with Orval at the time he was killed, is that he was punching the butt of the gun around in grann[sic] along the edge of the canal to make some frogs move. In doing so, the hammer of the gun struck a board that was sticking up in the side of the canal, causing the gun to explode. The load of shot struck the unfortunate lad near the right ear, tearing away part of his skull.

The funeral at Rock Island was largely attended, the pallbearers being Ed. Shaw, Jodie Kalina, T. B, and Crawford Jackson, Howard Harry and Richard Trafton, all of whom were Orval’s school mates.

A fellow researcher and I have found a Thomas Ruff born 1831 in Milo, Yates County, NY. His parents were Thomas Ruff (bn. 1787) and Lillis (bn. 1788). It is possible that he named a daughter after his mother. Hope this helps.

Update: Arvin Roff and his family were living in Milo, NY during the 1850 census and in Kalamazoo, MI during the 1870 census. Arvin had a brother named Sydney Roff who was married to a Ms. Tompkins and remained in the Milo, NY area. Their father and mother were born in NY and CT respectively.

I have an Arvin Roff (or Ruff) living in Milo, Yates County, NY in 1850. He was bn. Abt. 1812 and moved to MI with his wife Achsah and thier children Myron, James, and Mary.

I was just looking at your post. I too am trying to find more information on a Thomas Roff who was born abt 1836 in NY or Vermont. He had a son William Carlton Roff in 1864 in Hoosic Falls NY. I'm not sure who Williams mother was, but Thomas remarried a Mary Aska in 1868 in Lake County too. Maybe we are researching the same lines?

My grandmother's name was Margaret Zell who married William Bela Roff.
She died around 1952. Perhaps there was an older relative.

The marrage you've located is indeed that of William Bela Roff to Maude Elizabeth Zell. I believe Maude sied on 24 March 1952 in New York, so I can't match up the death dates you quote.

I think you might have the wrong Ernest Roff information in your tree because my great uncle Ernest Roff was not married and died in 1932. His grandfather was King Solomon Manes.

Trying to find information about her spouse Carl Alfred Rees parents. Carl was borned on 3/22/1878 and died on 4/1/1941.

Interesting stuff!

Bela came from Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, son of Thomas (b 30 Aug 1808) and Kitty Ashwin, b 1812 in Breforton, Worcestershire. Thomas and his father Charles (b
1775 in Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire), both lived in Chipping Norton.

The Gloucester connection continued back to Charles's father John, born Northleach in 1743. John appears to have been born a Roffe (with an "e" on his name), but dropped the final vowel during his life. John and his wife Elizabeth left wills which identified their children, so these connections are confirmed.

John's father Robert (b 1710) and grandfather Thomas (b 1689) both came from Northleach. These identities are based on matching birth dates and both parents, so are probably correct but not absolute. Before Thomas, the parish records are now in poor condition, so earlier ancestors are much harder to pin down.

I hope this helps. I can pad this out with more detail if required. I'd also be interested in knowing more about Bela's decendants in the USA, if you can trace his family forward.

Hi! I'm trying to find info on Ernest Berton Roff (b. 1893) in Illinois I believe. He married Mary Bernadine West (b. 1893).

To my knowledge, I only know of two of their children: Mary Claire Roff Wise and Emilie.
