Yes, they came from Gottschee area of Austria. Josef arrived in 1899 and Jacob came over in 1901. A couple years later, in 1903, Josef's wife Mary (Lanahner) and their son, Joseph P, arrived. Josef and Jacob worked as miners in Michigan before moving to Idaho where they farmed.

I'm August Henigman's granddaughter. My middle name is Elizabeth after Aunt Betty. Aunt Mary left me a ton of information and photos. Search August Henigman and it should take you to the family tree. If you'd like to add information, please let me know. I haven't had much time to work on it lately.

Best,

Erin

I grew up hearing stories about Mat and Justina. I'm fairly sure they lived in Jenny Lind, Arkansas as well as Clinton, Indiana, and may have finally settled in Oklahoma.

They were apparently cousins of my great grandmother Aloisa Rom, who emigrated from Tschermoschnitz, a tiny town in Gottschee. Aloisa married John Henigman, (originally Honigman)who also came from the same area. My grandpa was August Henigman, their son. There is a great deal of information online about the Gottschee area.

Hope this helps!

Hello, Just started doing some digging here. I am not exactly sure where my Great-Great Grandparents are from. I do know Slovenia/Yugoslavia and their names are Josjeph and Mary A Rom. Could we be talking about the same people? I have them living in Clinton, Indiana. Their daughter, Justina is my Great Grandmother and her Daughter, Zella (though on the census is listed as Gizella) is my Grandma.

I Received this email on Jan 14,2010
I hope this will add more info.
Susan

"I came across your entry for Josef Grahek and Katharina Geshel, parents of John D. Grahek (b. 7/24/1862 in Lokve #2) in Rootsweb.com. John's parents married in Tschernembl/Crnomelj parish, Krain, Austria on 2/18/1852. Josef Grahek was born abt. 1819 and was from Lokve #2 and his parents were Johann Grahek and Katharina Kocevar. Katharina Geshel/Göstl (also Göstel), but pronounced Geschtel in German (I believe meaning "little Gus" or "Gus' son" - what it turned into in Slovenish would be something similar like Geshel) was born abt. 1830 in Döblitsch/Doblice #10, Tschernembl parish, Krain, Austria. Her parents were Peter Göstl and Katharina Vertin. Tschernembl borders on the German-speaking region formerly known as Gottschee (now Kocevje) and the GHGA (Gottscheer Heritage and Genealogy Association) has transcribed the Tschernembl marriage records and are for sale on their website - Gottschee.org (under "Publications" and then under "Marriages").
By the way, John's wife's name, Rom, is also a German name from the old German Rahm, meaning "blackbird".
Barry Deutschmann
Lake George, N.Y."

Re: Roms of Pinczow

I know of two different possible meanings of the name Rom. In the Gottscheerisch dialect "Rom" ("Rabe" in hochdeutsch) means "crow." Another meaning is a Hebrew contraction for "Rosh Metitva," which means "head of the yeshiva."

Gottschee, Austria was an ethnic German community located in what is now Slovenia. Due to events having to do with WWII, most of the Germans are gone, and the town is now known as Kocevje, Slovenia -- in Slovenian, it's always had that name. The Slovenian word for "German," incidentally, is "Kocevar."

I myself grew up in Ely, Minnesota, thinking I was of Slovenian descent (on my father's side). When I was 49 I found out that the Gottscheers in Ely were just pretending to be Slovenian, because of the anti-Hun hysteria of 1917.

I suspect, but can't conclusively prove, that my ancestors were previously Jews pretending to be Germans.

I didn't know there were any Polish Roms. I hope my information is of help.

Roms of Pinczow

I'm researching the surname Rom. The Rom I am beginning with, Marion Rom (Maryan?), came from Pinczow near Warsaw in Poland. We think the name Rom was shortened from a lengthier, more Polish sounding surname, but this is all I have to go on right now. My Marion Rom was born in Pinczow in 1887 and came to America in 1914 and settled in Chicago, Illinois, as a furniture reupholsterer, working first for John Colby & Sons and then owning his own furniture upholstery business. He went on to have one daughter with his first wife (Rybicka), who continued her life in Downers Grove. I am, again, quite sure that Rom was a shortened version of his name but cannot find the name on any ships' manifests. Thank you for any further information you can give me.

Her father's name is listes as Johannes Rom. She was 72 when she died on 7-19-1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was married when she died and her husband's name was Gustaf Adolph Gustafson.
