Re: Franciscus "Frank" Romain born 1840 to IL to ID

After my visit to Illinois in February 2009 I've picked up some new knowledge:
I still don't know why Frank Romain ended up in Lively Grove, IL but at St Anthony's Catholic Church he married Maria "Mary" Buescher 24 Apr 1876 (about 5 years after he arrived via the Port of New York). From the church records, it shows his parents as Francisci Xaverii Romain and Margaretha PIERLOT. Witnesses were Elis Buescher and Bernard Pagenkemp.

Frank was a contributor to the Propagation of the Faith and sent his annual contributions to New York City.

Frank and Mary had 2 girls and a boy that died before they moved in late summer 1888 to Keuterville, Idaho as well as John, Dominic, Frederick and Anna (Annie). One of the girls was adopted.

Per the 1920 census, it says Frank was naturalized in 1890 (I presume in Idaho) but I can't find his naturalization record anywhere.

Mary died in late 1888. She was the daughter of Johannes Gerhard Buescher 1812-1888 of Wash/St Clair County IL and Maria Eliz Rickelmann Buescher 1817-1892, both originally from Hannover. I know there are Bueschers in Idaho County that originally came from Effingham County, IL. I don't know if they are related to the Bueschers of Wash/St Clair County.

At St Anthony's and St Liborius Churches at Lively Grove and St Libory IL I found more names that could be shared between, Oldenburg, the Effingham area, Washington/St Clair County area and Idaho/Washington/Oregon. It dawned on me as I was reading through the histories of the churches, in particular of the Catholic church at St Libory, that the Catholics must have sent the german Catholics out from Teutopolis, IL to start various communities within the area. I think that is why there were also Jansens and Bueschers and Bosses and Albers and Luechtefelds and Behrmanns that are in all of these communities. If my theory is correct, I would like to figure out the timing of it all.

Frank died in 1925 and spent much of his later years with his daughter Annie. Frank's son Frederick married Josepha Kaufmann in 1908 and they homesteaded to Montana in 1913.

Thank you,

Angela Romain in Phoenix, AZ

Franciscus "Frank" Romain born 1840 to IL to ID

Frank came via ship from LeHavre in 1871 and ended up in Lively Grove, Illinois. He married Mary Buescher and they had 6 children. The 1880 census shows Frank, John and adopted daughter Annie. Later in the 1880s they would have Dominic, Anna and Fred.

In 1888 they moved to Keuterville, Idaho with John, Dominic, Anna and Fred (we have a hand written birth certificate showing St Anthony's as the baptismal place for Fred - my grandpa). Mary died in 1888. Frank was a devout Catholic. But what happened to the chlidren Frank and Annie? Did they die?

I would like to know where Frank came from in Europe and/or where his parents and any siblings were. He lived with the German community (and as far as I can tell spoke German) though all of the censuses except one show France as his origin and one census said "german/french". Family lore said he came from Alsace-Lorraine and I've posted an inquiry to that board via another genealogy site as well as Hannover.

Why did Frank "Franciscus" come over here and did any other of his Romain relatives come or were already here, i.e. possiby Bopp Romain?

Also, I don't have any info about Mary Buescher's family either. She, along with Frank, is buried in the Keutervile, Idaho cemetery. He died in 1925.

I appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Yes, Isaac Romane was the brother of John Romane who died in Parke County, IN. I was in the courthouse researching the Romane family and read through the records regarding the settlement of John's estate. I descend through Isaac's line. Do you have information on the family back to their arrival in America?

Second response, yes this is the correct family. Charles W. Birnsteel is the name I should have entered. I am tracing Emma Prentice Watts Hurst who lived with her sister Mary and her husband Charles W. Birnsteel in the 1910, 20, and 30 census. She died in 1950. Again, my e-mail is bobwilson528@yahoo.com. Thanks,

As far as I know, there aren't any other Birnsteels in the United State except the Charles Birnsteel families. My husband's father was Charles Watts Birnsteel and he did die in 1998. His father, Charles W. (I think for William) Birnsteel died in 1969. Could you have their first names wrong? Senior worked for Avery Savings and Loan and my father-in-law worked for Traveler's Insurance. The name was originally spelled Birnstiel but was changed during WWI because of anti German sentiment, or so I was told.
Help?
Laurie Birnsteel

That is the pertinent census entry. However, the census taker erred in the spelling of the surname. Also, Margaret Howe Romain was actually b. in Schoharie Cty., NY in 1820. William Romain was b. in NY or NJ in 1817, his parents having been in NYC on the Lower East Side in the 1810 census. His father, Ralph, worked "for the Navy" & "in a shipyard" according to family papers. The Lower East Side was opposite the Brooklyn Navy Yard on the East R.

Re: Romain's in Canada? Where does the name derive from?

There were and still are a great many people of the name Romain around the Fort Coulonge, Quebec, Canada and Lapasse, Ontario, Canada (which are just across the Ottawa River from each other). Again many of these people eventually moved to the Pembroke area. (Pembroke being one of the bigger centres drew many people as workers). Some of the Romain family were also known as Baron and even Pellerin. The family dates back to Port Royal (Acadia) and thence to France according to what I have read.

Thomas Romain(e)(s), Inquest 1862 CA (from MO)

Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
24-31 March 1862; pt. 1 of 2
*************************

>>Monday, 24 Mar 1862<<

MAN SHOT -- A man by name of ROMAINE was shot yesterday morning by J.C. SHEPPARD, on the Hogan road, about 13 miles from French Camp. The prime causes which led to the shooting date back some 6 months, ROMAINE having been employed on the ranch of Mr. SHEPPARD, and for some time enjoyed the confidence and respect of his family.

He commenced a course of slander and abuse of the family, about 6 months since, after being discharged from the employ of Mr. SHEPPARD and has continued it up to the present time in all places and upon all occasions, until, having been frequently warned of the consequences if he persisted, he was shot by Mr. SHEPPARD yesterday morning, while prowling around his house. ROMAINE was in the road at the time of the shooting and the weapon used was a Colt’s revolver.

Mr. SHEPPARD, who came into town yesterday and delivered himself into custody states that the ball probably entered his (ROMAINE’s) head, while ROMAINE was running from him. The last he saw of him he had fallen face down, in the road, and presumes the shot must have proved fatal.

According to the statement of Mr. SHEPPARD, ROMAINE has followed him with threats, even to that of his life and the life of his family, for a long time past, slandering his wife openly and making himself obnoxious in every manner which could have a tendency to end in a desperate means of putting a stop to it.

ROMAINE came to SHEPPARD’s house about a year ago and engaged in the work of digging a ditch, after which he was employed as a laborer on the ranch, was treated with every mark of respect, being illiterate and unable to read or write, was taught to master both by Mrs. SHEPPARD, and occupied a place in the household circle until his slanders and abuse necessitated his discharge from house and employ, since which time he has continued his unmanly course. On one occasion he made a threat to take the life of Mrs. SHEPPARD, and pursued her from the house with an open razor, and subsequently threatened to murder her and her family if she exposed his conduct.
ROMAINE is said to be from Missouri, and a man of about 30 years of age. Whether, or not, the shooting proved fatal we have not been able to ascertain.

-------------------------------------------------
>>Tuesday, 25 Mar 1862<<

INQUEST -- An inquest was held by Justice Noble on Sunday upon the body of ROMAINE, who was shot by J.C. SHEPPARD near his ranch, on Sunday morning. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that the deceased came to his death by a ball discharged from a pistol by SHEPPARD. The latter, against whom no complaint has yet been entered, is in this city and ready to answer for the deed when called upon.

>>Wednesday, 26 Mar 1862<<

CORONER’S INQUEST -- An inquest upon the body of Thomas ROMAINES was held at the New Hope School House, on Sunday, March 23d, by R.W. NOBLE, Justice of the Peace for Castoria Township. The jurors in the case were as follows:
W.A. FOLEY
William WHITE
Frederick RINGLOY
John GELABERT
Charles W. ALLEN
J.M. RUSSELL
W.D. McCLENDON
Geo. SIMES
Jos. B. KERRICK
Wm. W. McKIERNAN
John GAU
R.H. YORK, Foreman

The following is the evidence:

MRS. ELIZABETH McKERNON, sworn -- I first heard of the death of the deceased this morning, upon hearing a man cry “O! Lord!” when, upon going to the window I saw ROMAINES in the road with his arm lifted up, and a person behind him with a pistol in his hand pointed at him. The person with the pistol, whom I recognized as Mr. J.C.
SHEPPARD, fired at the deceased 3 times.

ROBERT KELLER, sworn -- Saw Mr. SHEPPARD pursuing ROMAINES and shortly after returning, stated that ROMAINES was in h--l, and would trouble him no more.

MRS. MARY JONES, sworn -- Saw Mr. SHEPPARD in pursuit of ROMAINES. On his return I asked him if he had done anything and he replied that he had, and that ROMAINES would trouble no person any more.

JAMES ALLEN, sworn -- Saw Mr. SHEPPARD shoot the deceased with a pistol 3 or 4 times; saw ROMAINES fall; am not acquainted with Mr. SHEPPARD, but learn that he is the party whom I saw shoot.

LAWRENCE McKERNON, sworn -- Saw Thomas ROMAINES running and Mr. SHEPPARD after him with a pistol in his hand; fired the pistol 3 or 4 times; saw ROMAINES fall; Mr. SHEPPARD said when he left, “Boys, attend to this man.”

THE VERDICT of the jury was as follows: We, the jurors, summoned to investigate the cause of the death of Mr. Thomas ROMAINES, do find that the same was caused by 3 shots fired from a pistol in the hands of one Jules C. SHEPPARD, on Sunday, 23d of March, 1862, at or near John W. McKERNON’s residence, said deceased supposed to be about 23 years of age.

EXAMINATION for MURDER -- The examination of J.C.
SHEPPARD, charged with the murder of Thomas ROMAINS, was commenced at 2 o’clock yesterday before Justice Brush, in the County Court room.
The prisoner appeared, attended by his counsel, S.A. BOOKER, Esq., the District Attorney, H.B.
UNDERHILL, Esq., appearing on behalf of the State. In the absence of several witnesses who had failed to reach the city at the hour summoned, the Court took a recess until 4 o’clock p.m., at which time the examination was commenced by the reading of the complaint and the affidavit upon which it was based. The District Attorney then introduced the following testimony:

JAMES ALCORN -- Am 17 years of age and reside in San Joaquin county; at Mr. McKERNON’s, first saw ROMAINS passing along the road as if following something, and next, saw Mr. SHEPPARD after him on a bay horse, ROMAINS being on foot; SHEPPARD came up with him, jumped off his horse and commenced shooting; at the 1st shot ROMAINS seemed to be wounded; think he shot twice; at the 2nd shot ROMAINS fell, and supposed him to be shot in the back of the head; saw him fall and think the last shot killed him; he did not rise after the fall; ROMAINS had no weapon and made no demonstrations toward SHEPPARD; they were some 60 yards apart when I first saw them; ROMAINS running to get away from SHEPPARD; the shooting occurred on Sunday, the day of the month, do not know; the shooting occurred near Mr. McKERNON’s house.

LAWRENCE McKERNON -- Saw ROMAINS running and Mr.
SHEPPARD after him on a bay horse; saw the firing by SHEPPARD, of 4 or 5 shots; heard SHEPPARD tell ROMAINS to stop; ROMAINS was running with great speed and begging SHEPPARD not to kill him; SHEPPARD kept firing at ROMAINS after he
(ROMAINS) had begged him not to shoot him; saw no weapon in ROMAINS’ hands; he made no resistance in any way; the shooting took place on Sunday last, at McKERNON’s; 3 bullets took effect -- 1 in the arm, 1 under the arm and 1 in the back of the head, all fired from behind; Mr. SHEPPARD, as he came by, told us to “attend to that matter.”

ROBERT KELLER -- Live at JONES’ ranch on the French Camp road; saw defendant mount his horse and start in pursuit of ROMAINS; ROMAINS was about a mile distant when SHEPPARD started after him; ROMAINS at the time was walking away from JONES’ house, in a NE direction, and towards the school house; SHEPPARD went right for ROMAINS, putting his horse on a trot; saw him keep on towards ROMAINS until he got into the timber, when ROMAINS turned from the direction in which he was going, towards McKERNON’s house; saw ROMAINS start in to run at the time he changed his direction, SHEPPARD keeping on after him; they went a short distance and then passed out of my sight; saw no more of them; SHEPPARD said when he came back, “he’s in h--l, and will not bother any one any more;” did not see any of the shooting; ROMAINS was in a ditch when I first saw him; they were nearly a quarter of a mile apart when I saw ROMAINS come out of the ditch; was about 10 yards nearer ROMAINS than SHEPPARD, looking across from where SHEPPARD was coming.

CHRISTOPHER VAN GLAN was called, but his testimony was brief and unimportant; after which the District Attorney rested the cause on the part of the State, reserving the privilege of introducing rebutting testimony. The defense then called:

T.B. CHALMERS -- Am acquainted with defendant and deceased -- the latter we usually called “Tom;”
have known SHEPPARD 5 months and lived within 2 ½ miles of him; met him but seldom; have heard ROMAINS speak of Mr. SHEPPARD and his family.

AT THIS POINT in the proceedings the District Attorney objected to the introduction of testimony not directly bearing upon the case, and denied the admissibility of evidence to show remote provocation. The question was argued at length and submitted to the Court -- the decision being reserved until this morning at 9 o’clock, to which time the examination was continued.

-------------------------------------------------
Transcribed by Dee Sardoch
To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php
I'm looking for any information on the Romain families... The families of Frank & Emma Romain and Lester and Eva Romain. If I'm not mistaken, Emma and Eva were sisters, but I'm not positive. Any information would be of great help. They lived in Pompton Lakes from 1910 until 1930. Except for Frank and Emma, who I have lost track of.

Thank you!

Message for John Chassie:

I have been searching for Adam/Romain and Marguerite Picard for years. Could you please tell me where you found the info that they were married 03 Feb 1800 in Notre Dame de la Jeune Lorette,Qu and Marguerite Picard was born 27 March 1785. Do you have a birth/baptismal record for August Romain who married Adelaide Picard? If so, where did you find it. I am trying to find proof of August's parents. If these are his parents, maybe we can go beyond and find out if there is Indian Blood in this line.

We love newbies! Welcome to the board.

First of all, in your subject line always post as much information as you can especially put the name and location or at least a date in the subject line of all your posts, you'll get more people looking at it. Example:

Looking for Dad William A Romain b Ballard Co. KY

Then try to put dates, full names, city, state, etc, siblings, parents etc. The more info you can give the better chance someone may recognize the name, live in the area, or know one of the other relatives.

With that said,

Try doing a search for the name and variations. If you live in or near Ballard County, KY, I would start with the local library there. Do a search for the local City Directory for that time period and you may find him or a family member.

Search online here for the Social security death index as he may have died there or somewhere else.

Hey David sorry I didn't read this posting before I read the last one. But I was joking around with you anyway I new you new Who your greatgrandmothers name was.

Although you got to say that being related to Romain Gervais seems easy to mix up that you are also related to Romains

K didn't want you to get mad at me. Still would like to see what you have on the Romain's I have nothing and what I did have on the Gervais has been wiped out after a computer crash. So if you would really like to help me out you could always email me what you have. And I'd be forever in debted to you.

Thanks
Cousin Judi

What David seem to have forgotten that his father's mother's name was Theresa Romain.
And my grandfather was also Light hair (only remember the gray hehe) and blue eyes.

Hey cousin do you have any info on the Romain's I've been told that you got your Metis card not from the Gervais as I thought but from the Romain's and his name was Augustin Romain.
Anyone else have a connection

Judi

Re: Romain's in Canada? Maybe fr Gauvin

I have been tracing a Gauvin who may have used the name Romain. I have found that a branch of the Gauvin family (pronounced Go-vin, where vin is pronounced like the french word for wine, rhymes with Romain.)
A third generation Gauvin in New France, Romain Gauvin, spawned a sept that likely listed the surname as "Gauvin, dit Romain". Unusual, I have seen this happen before (e.g. Julien, LeTartre families). After that, either name would have been used. By 1900, the unused name could very well have been dropped. The same is true for many Canadian families from Québec (e.g. Lapointe). French Canadians frequently emigrated to Ontario and the NE US for work. Not a surprise to find Gauvin's in Pembroke.

I can't be sure you're the right Mike, but was directed to find "Mike Romain" in researching LOTT in Tioga & Chemung Co, NY. Nettie/Nancy Romain 1852-1926 married Isaac Shepard Lott.

Isaac was son of George William Lott & Anna RICHAR, grandson of Abraham G Lott & Mary CHILSON. My research question had been to learn who were the parents of Abram G Lott. It seems a stretch to ask you, but hey, I'll follow up any clue!
