Thank you so much. I've been so fortunate to be able to "borrow" names & research from the other branches of the family. 2 of the 3 branches go back to early colonial times....early-to mid 1600's. The McCreary branch came a little bit later, but still in colonial times. Guess I'll have to learn to do actual geneological research to climb up the Ronning branch. If I gain any more info than you have, I'll definitely share.
Thanks again.
Phyllis

Matt,

There is a Ronning family that owned hardware stores in Glenwood and Starbuck, Minnesota. I am a shirt-tail relative of Ole Ivar Ronning (b. 1858 in Norway, d. 1931 in Columbus, North Dakota). Ole married my relative Inger Marie Skindelien, also born in Vest Torpa, Nordre Land, Oppland, Norway. Ole came with his family, so there are more of them in the Glenwood area. Don't know if any of this rings a bell.

just came across this message,Hilda and Ambjorg were sisters to my grandmother,Mary (Marit).I have a copy of my grandparents Marriage Record,S.Haugland was the witness. You may get a copy of this record by inquiring from the Woodbury County Iowa court house under Marriage Record "R" for Edwin Johme and Mary Ronning. I have very little other info on them except I believe their name in Norway was Rodningen.Their father Ivor Rodningen and mother was Barbro Runshagen.

My grandmother was born near the farm of Ronningen (and perhaps a few more letters), near Orkdal, in northern Norway. Orkdal is close to Trondheim.
-
My grandmother came to the US, to South Dakota, where she died in 1952. A sister, Oline, died there too, in 1961. A brother, Helmer (Jelmer/Hjelmer) died in Alaska in 1970 and two brothers, Anders and Andreas, died in Mora, Minnesota in 1905.
-
All were born in the "Orkadalen" valley and there are other "Ronnings" in southeastern South Dakota who are from Orkdal, but supposedly no relation to my grandmother.
-
I still have the Ellis Island/Ronning page going in the background on my computer. It lists 300 Ronning's and the address is: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/search/matchMore.asp?kind=... .
-
Hope this helps.
-
PS: Locally (in South Dakota) there is a farm/general retail store chain by the name of Running's. I have always assumed that this was started by someone with the last name of Ronning, just spelled the way it was pronounced in Norway, Rewning, or something similar, eventually to be spelled Running. Another possibility.
Hayfield is in Dodge County, Minnesota.
In the 1920 US census Minnie J. Wright is listed as 39 yrs old, born in Minnesota and both parents born in Minnesota.
In 1910 the family lives in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Minnie J. Wright is listed as 28 yrs old, born in Minnesota and both parents born in Norway.

In the 1900 US census for Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota there is a Julia Ronning, a 50 yr old widow, born in Norway who has in her household a daughter named Minnie (a slight difference in listed age for Minnie but women have been known to allow this to happen) AND in Julia's household are boarders by the surname Wright (an interesting coincidence?). I've heard of a number of Norwegian women named Gunhild or Gunhilda who were called Julia in the US. This woman in Minneapolis lists that she came to the US in 1857 - so she would have been a young child when she emigrated.

Searching for descendants of Ole Iver Ronning. He married my relative, Inger Marie (Christiansen) Skindelien. Ole was born in 1858 in Waupaca, Wisconsin; his family was from Sondre Fron in Oppland, Norway (from the Strandrodning farm). Ole and Inger had a number of children: Iver, Rudolph, Clarence and Joe.

Iver had a daughter Marianne Buzbee from Canada who corresponded with my great-aunt for many years trying to put together a family history. Joe had a son named Norman and a daughter named Joey. They also had a sister named Huldah Bradley who had three daughters. That same great-aunt Clara went out to California to visit Huldah several times.

Am most anxious to correspond with descendants of Inger Marie Ronning. I have been trying to work on a family history. I do have a very nice family portrait of the Ronning family taken in Columbus, North Dakota.

PR,

Thanks for the interesting insights.

The Americanization (sp?) of names does make things confusing. There are some standard names chosen to replace original native names. I didn't know that Julia was used for Gunhilda. That's very helpful. My mother has an aunt whose name originally was Helga, but she has always gone by Helen.

Thanks again for your help.

Matt

I am wondering if you have a Mary Ronning that lived in Duluth Mn. around 1942. I am researching her Mother Mary Lane that passed away around that time in Duluth, I believe that Mary Ronning’s maiden name was not Lane because her mother was re-married, it may be Robertson but I am not sure yet. I think Mary Ronning had three brothers at that time and their names were James, Elmer, and Roy.

If any of this connects with your info please let me know.

Thanks so much.
