I just came upon your post. I am researching "Rooks" in Ga, Alabama, and Florida. My great, great, grandfather was Christopher "Kit" Columbus Rooks and he traveled alot, mostly in the southern states, but some northern. He and his wife Mattie had 14 children. The oldest was my great grandfather Daniel Floyd Rooks.
I would be interested to know if the docs you describe pertain to Kit and Mattie or their children. We do not know much at all about him or Mattie.

Re: ROOKS, Harrison and family, Paris, TX 1890-1930s or later

The only things I have for the Rooks family are showing on the Ancestry and Rootsweb family trees.

Harrison Rooks' daughter, Helen, married my Grand Uncle, Patrick or P R (I think Patrick Robert) DeCourcy and I've been trying to get more information about him other than what city directories and census records show. I know that he was a railroader and an engineer at one time. He worked for a railroad that later became part of the Southern Pacific and he and his family lived in El Paso, TX. I did run into a relative, but he knew very little about his family ancestry.

I'm especially curious as to how Patrick and Helen met. None of the DeCourcy family seemed to be in the vacinity of Paris, TX when Helen and Patrick married. Patrick's brother, also a railroad engineer, and his family were living in Pittsburg, TX in 1906 according to their sister' obit of 1906.

There is a Rooks group on the Yahoo site but apparently it's not that active currently and I haven't been able to find anything that I could glean from the site.

Do you have the names of all of Harrison's children? All I have is what I've found in the various census records, 1910 through 1930.

If you reply, please use my new email address of
kin-hunter25@cox.net to get to me directly.

Thanks

Just started looking for Harrison Rooks family. His son, John Edgar Rooks had 2 wives. After the first wife died, I'm guessing in La. he sent his 3 daughters to his parents. They are listed in the 1920 census with Harrison Rooks and family. One of the daughters, Edwina, married my mother's brother, Lamar Whitten. Do you have any more info on this Rooks family?
H.McCarthy

I am looking for a Harriet Rooks born circa 1825, supposedly in Winton, Hertford County NC, but it could be a neighboring county or it could be Virginia. She married James Manning and had four kids, Starkey, William, Jane and Abner.

The records I have are confusing because I have found mostly records for a Harriet Rooks as a married name, not a maiden name, which would be a different woman. In temrs of neighboring area, there are so many places to look I don't know where to begin. Trying to figure out her parentage or where she came from.

ROOKS, ALBERT HAROLD - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

ROOKS, ALBERT HAROLD

Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Navy. Born: 29 December 1891, Colton, Wash. Appointed from: Washington. Citation: for extraordinary heroism, outstanding courage, gallantry in action and distinguished service in the line of his profession, as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Houston during the period 4 to 27 February 1942, while in action with superior Japanese enemy aerial and surface forces. While proceeding to attack an enemy amphibious expedition, as a unit in a mixed force, Houston was heavily attacked by bombers; after evading 4 attacks, she was heavily hit in a fifth attack, lost 60 killed and had 1 turret wholly disabled. Capt. Rooks made his ship again seaworthy and sailed within 3 days to escort an important reinforcing convoy from Darwin to Koepang, Timor, Netherlands East Indies. While so engaged, another powerful air attack developed which by Houston's marked efficiency was fought off without much damage to the convoy. The commanding general of all forces in the area thereupon canceled the movement and Capt. Rooks escorted the convoy back to Darwin. Later, while in a considerable American-British-Dutch force engaged with an overwhelming force of Japanese surface ships, Houston with H.M.S. Exeter carried the brunt of the battle, and her fire alone heavily damaged 1 and possibly 2 heavy cruisers. Although heavily damaged in the actions, Capt. Rooks succeeded in disengaging his ship when the flag officer commanding broke off the action and got her safely away from the vicinity, whereas one-half of the cruisers were ??lost.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Manila, The Philippine Islands

Cemetery: A.B.M.C.
Re: Jan Albert Rooks

Garrit Willem Hesselink and Janna Geertruid (Gertrude)Rooks arrived in the U.S. early in 1847, after surviving a shipwreck. At that time they were not married to each other. Gertrude was a helper in the family of Garrit and his first wife, Hilleken Sieverdink. Garrit and Hilleken were the parents of four children, one of whom died enroute to the U.S. The ship was wrecked near Cuba, the passengers were rescued and taken to New Orleans. In March of 1847 Hilleken died in St. Louis, Missouri. At some time after this Garrit and Gertrude married. They became the parents of seven children. They settled in Chautauqua County, New York, living part of the time in Clymer and part of the time in Westfield, where Garrit was a textile worker. They are found in 1850, 1855, 1860, and 1865 census records in those locations. After Garrit died in 1867 in Westfield, Gertrude and most of the children moved to Albany, Albany County, New York. They were found there in the 1870 and 1880 census records.
I am interested in learning more about Janna Berendina Rooks, born 24 October 1828 in Winterswijk, the 8th child of Jan Aelbert Rooks and Janna Berendina Hesselink. Janna Berendina (the daughter) came to the U.S. on the "Edwina," which docked in New York City on 16 October 1850. I think that she was called Jane here and lived in Albany, New York. She may have married a Johan Valentin Goedbelet/Goedbolet and a Cornelis Tazelaar, but I have no proof of that. I am hoping that someone can tell me more about her or those possible husbands.

Today I opened a document folder and found genealogy documents that do not belong to any of the researchers in our family. ROOKS is one of the more common surnames in these documents. Most are copies, but some are originals. I have done genealogy off and on for 15 years, and I have no idea how long or how these documents came to be in my possession. I suppose it could have occurred in the last couple of weeks or any time in the last fifteen years. If you think they could be yours, please contact me at rootsinspector@aol.com and give me some details that will help me to determine that you are the rightful owner.

I am looking for parents of the two Taylors that married Lucy Jane Rooks. Lucy was born about 1816, daughter of John Rooks and Ann Jones. She first married Henry W. Taylor, about 1832, who died in the Civil War. She then married John Henry Taylor, Feb 3, 1869. Does anyone know if these two Taylors were related? The Taylor forum was no help.

Thank you,
Pam Herring Mashburn

If so, we met and talked and have exchanged some information. But if you are not who I think you are, I will tell you that you and my husband, Don Barhill, are cousins. He is the great grandson of Archibald Benjamin Rooks and Martha Melvina Mott. Don's mother was Mary Lois Rooks, d/o John Benjamin Rooks and Vashti Horrell.

I was delighted to find the will of James Madison Rooks which you had posted.

You mentioned Archibald Benjamin Rooks' Civil War service. I have a copy of his Civil War records. Do you have them and/or would you like copies. Will share whatever I have.

You can e-mail me directly at flossieb2@juno.com

Flossie Oakes Barnhill

I would really like to figure out how (if at all) my William H Rooks, son of John & Sarah Rooks, ties into the Dempsey Rooks family. I've actually got a lot of family in Haywood County on my Presley side, but would love to be able to tie the Rooks family together.

According to what I've been able to dig out of the 1860-1880 census, William's family looks something like this:

Father: John Rooks (b. abt 1833 in North Carolina, d. ?)
Mother: Sarah ? (b. abt 1838 in Tennessee, d. ?)

Children:
William H. Rooks (b. 5 Mar 1855 in TN, d. 21 Feb 1906 in Woodruff County, AR)
James Rooks (b. abt 1858 in TN, d. ?)

I see the family in Poinsett County in the 1860 census, but can't find them anywhere in 1870. Then William shows up again in the 1880 in Cross County (which was formed in 1862, partially out of Poinsett, so he's in pretty much the same place as 1860). No idea where John & Sarah or son James end up. There's always the chance John served and died in the war, but I just don't know.

I do know the junior Dempsie Rooks ended up in Woodruff County, AR as his grave is in Fakes Chapel Cemetery:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=97...

Also in the cemetery are the graves of William H Rooks and some of his family. William is where I get stuck in my research. According to the 1860 Ppoinsett County, Arkansas, census, his parents were John & Sarah Rooks and he was born in Tennessee, but I've not had much success tracking down the parents. Considering proximity I wouldn't be surprised if they tie in with the Dempsey Rooks family in Haywood, I just haven't got the braincells to work out how as yet.

New Info Hardeman Rooks

In the interest of busting through this stone wall I have run into, I figured I would post this exciting new find of information on hardeman or hardiman Rooks here in hopes that it might cause an Ahh haa, moment in someone that might be able to help push on forward with this line.

For a very long time I believed that Hardeman and Daniel Rooks of the 1820 census were brothers, after finding a fascinating document, I am more inclined to believe they were in fact father and son. The Document was a 3 page court transcribed letter to help a mans widow apply for Rev soilder pension. It gives details of Hardimans life that helped create most of the time line I am placing here to research further. Here is what I have so far on this line.

Hardeman Rooks B 1748 Virginia? Nathaniel list virgina as fathers birth place on 1880 census
D aft 1846 De Kalb Ga Age verified by De Kalb Court Document for Rev pension statement for thomas williams

Married In Duplin NC

spouse
Sallie Hardin? Both daniel and Hardiman had a male child of that age on the 1820 census, then in 1830 james and nathaniel appear in it.. at the right ages... so deducting they are these two boys.. so not brothers. Then we are lucky enough for Nathaniel to live long enough to be on a census that ask for parents birth place, in which he states Virgina. With Daniel being over 30 years Hardimans junoir he was most likely born in NC where his parents were married and lived in duplin until moving to randolph. That only leaves Hardeman as being the possible parent of Nathaniel out of the 2 men.

Anyway, this information still has a long ways to go, but I think a lot can be done with it thanks to the pension letter. I'm hoping that this might rattle some memories of a hardy rooks out of NC or some possible rooks daughters that have not been connected with their parents yet in here and could fill in the blanks for the 1790 census. Any thoughts or ideas will be of help in following this further.

Thanks, Melissa Rooks Ferguson

update, in long long time it took to post all this information, I forgot to mention that on the childrens section of hardiman rooks the children they have are only possible children as listed by ancestry.com. They have not been researched or verified as of yet. They are simply the children listed in censuses ect.
At this point I have been focused on confirming hardimans children and researching them.
I will add an update though. I have found a possible daughter to fill in the gap of hardimans 2 unknown daughters. The name is Nancy Rooks born in NC. She married a John Taylor. I later find John Taylor living with an Isaac Rooks in screven county. This Isaac was born in SC according to the census. Any information on these people would be appreciated, so I can figure out if indeed this nancy does belong to Hardiman or not and further more if so, how they are connected to the isaac in screven that her husband would end up living with him at the end of their lives.
Thank, Melissa

There are about 10 words total in the document that we have struggled to identify while doing this transcription. One of them was Rebecca's last name that married the thomas Williams. It appears to be Sterd, but after researching a bit on the williams, I find it is most likely Rebecca Steed, daughter of nathaniel Steed found in Randolph county nc.

Hardemon Rooks Transcribed Affidavit

Below is the transcription of the deklab county affidavit that Hardiman rooks and Malcom Mcleod testified to. I thought some people might like to see a copy of it.

State of Georgia
Dekalb County

Be known that in this 26th day of January 1846 before me Merrill Collier a Justice of the Peace in and for said county formally appeared Hardamon Rook a resident of said county and state ages 96 years past—who being duly sworn according to the law doth in his oath make the following statements. That he is called upon to state if he knew Thomas Williams and Rebecca Williams formerly Rebecca Sterd in Randolph County North Carolina and if he knew the said Thomas to be a soldier in the War of the Revolution. The said deponent states that he was married in Duplin County North Carolina and moved to Randolph county about the 1778 or 1779 and resided in what was then called Captain Knights District and was well acquainted with Thomas Williams of the same place and knew him to be a faithful soldier and done service with him as a minute man in Capt Knights Company. But at this late period he cannot with accuracy give a narrative of the minute service as the tours were frequent and short – that – a few months before the Battle at Guilford Courthouse the said Thomas Williams *raind a company of which he was a member) in Randolph County volunteers he believes for the term of __ months and placed himself commander and marched to Litnels Barracks in Chatham County where stationed awaiting orders. Where they remained some seven or eight – weeks when they received a intelgram that Corn Wallice with his army was expected through North Carolina. Col Litnel received orders to march south with his whole forces for the purpose. That this deponent – was taken sick and returned home leaving the said Williams in service and he understood that Col Litnels right marched south with the view of combating with Corn Wallice *crofeed Akin higher than was expected and was attacked by general Green at Guildford Courthouse in a few weeks there after and Col Litnels right continues in service until their term of service expired and the said Thomas Williams returned home that the said Williams afterward done service in Capt. Knights Company of Calvary and done the rank of lieutenant that he does not recollect the particulars but knows that he was engaged in a skirmish at Needhams Plantation in Randolph County with Fannins Company of Torys where Thomas Lattum and one other was taken as spies and Col Belford ordered them blindfolded and shot – which order was carried into effect – that he can state nothing more of his own knowledge of the services of the said Thomas Williams but has always understood and believes that the said Williams done service from the commencement of said War from the fact of his being of full age and subjected by the laws of his country and his brother Edward Williams being a distinguished Captain in the American Cause for liberty – that about the close of the war of the Revolution the said Thomas Williams wife died and in the course of two or three years there after he was legally married to Sterd by Rich Shackleford a clergyman in Randolph County North Carolina and that he the deponent witnessed the marriage ceremony. That he afterwards knew the said Thomas and Rebecca Williams in Jackson County Ga. Where they had a large family of children and he is informed the said Rebecca Williams is still living, now a resident of Carroll county Ga that he heard of the death of the said Thomas Williams several years since.
his
Hardemon X Rooks
Mark

Sworn to and substantiated on the day and year first mentioned before me a justice of the peace in and for the county of Dekalb state of Georgia I further certify that Hardamon Rook has been formally known to me for fifteen years past_that he is illiterate but a man of undoubtable *ranuty? And knows the obligations he has taken upon himself in testifying to the truth of and signing the foregoing affidavit I further certify that I carefully read the affidavit-over to him completely before his signing the same and he states that it was cometty written as stated by him according to his best recollection which statements as made he cannot be mistaken in the truth here of in testimony here of I have unto set my hand this 26th day of January 1846

Merrill Collier
Malcom Mcleod
J.P

State of Georgia
Dekalb County

Be it known that on the 26th day of January 1846 before me Merrill Collier a Justice of the peace in and for said county formally appeared Malcom Mcleod a resident of said county and state ages seventy-one years first who being duly sworn saith he became acquainted with Hardemon Rooks in the year eighteen hundred and seven and married his daughter the year 1810 from which time he has been intimate in the family circle with the said Rooks that he has frequently heard him state that Thomas Williams was a faithful soldier in the American cause during the Revolutionary that the said Rooks is from old age and consequent lapse of memory unable to state with the same accuracy (in his opinion) that he could have done on his first acquaintance with him and does not in the foregoing affidavit- state particulars that he has heard him relate but what is stated he has many years ago heard him relate and has no doubt of the truth of his statements that he was acquainted with Thomas Williams and Rebecca his wife in Jackson County Georgia himself and has frequently heard the said Williams speak of his services and relate circumstances confirming in his deponents mind that the said Williams and Rooks done service in the same company and were intimate acquaintances in Randolph County North Carolina. Deponent further states that he became acquaints with the said Thomas Williams and Rebecca Williams.

End

This is a complete transcription of the affidavit without any sections or words being left out. All words with a * were clear, but what they looked to spell did not make sense but were left as found. Most sentences run into each other and can be confusing at times, but it is a true and accurate transcription.
Hi Al,

I have not been doing any genealogy for several years.

Emma Rooks was married to Belfred Roe WILSON, and had four sons. I have been in contact with all of them down in Harriet, Ark.

Roe WIlson was my maternal grandmother's brother. He was first married to Cleo Bryant and they had a daughter Mary and a son Ethan or Etham Edward Wilson, he is my brick wall.
I have his birth certificate and the 1920 Hamilton Co Ohio census. Cleo died when the children were small, Mary went with her grandmother Susan Rebecca Floyd WILSON, but have never found where Etham Edward went, when Roe married Emma.

The only thing that Emma & Roe's son know about Etham Edward WILSON, is that one of them thought he was killed or shot in a railroad accident somewhere, but they were not sure of this.

Thanks, Barb
