Obituary: Daily Signal, Zanesville, Ohio Friday Oct 1, 1869

GEORGE ROOTS, an old colored man, well-known in this city, having been a resident for perhaps, more than forty years died Thursday afternoon from paralysis. For many years he resided on the National road opposite the city cemetery, where he kept a little grocery and dispensed small beer of a peculiar quality to all thirsty mortals who favored George with theit patronage. Who does not remember the quaint sign that indicated his place of business with the horsecake, the commom cake, and the glass filled with foamy beer painted thereon.
In the center of the sign was the following verse:

"The Rock Spring so very clear
Is soon made into beer.
Stop traveler if you think fit,
And quench your thirst for a fip an a bit."

The 1870 census states he is from E. Virginia.

I am looking for any and all information on Harold and Frank who were twins born 4/18/1887. Their parents were Frederick and Elizabeth (Connelly) Roots.
They most worked for Cook County Illinois postal services in the early part of the 19th century, 1918-1930's. They may have been born in Marseilles, LaSalle Co., IL and both died in Chicago, Cook Co., IL.

Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Moorehead, 78, of 850 Jackson street, Zanesville, Ohio died at 6:30 a.m. today following an illness of two years. She was a lifelong resident of this city and was a member of St. Paul A. M. E. church and the Ladies Aid Society of the church.
Surviving are her husband Ernest R. Moorehead; one daughter, Mrs. Beulah Viney of the home; one sister, Miss Violet Roots of Dayton; two brothers, William Roots of Cleveland, Ohio and Frederick Roots of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren Miss Lee Estes Knight and Mrs. Martha Taylor; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Baker funeral home with Rev. Alonzo Ware officiating assisted by Rev. G. W. Morse. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home.

I am also related to woodbury, ober, and herrick. They were either related or married to my grandmother's family. She was a Baker from Manchester, Ma. Her parents were Eben and Lucinda (McGregor) Baker. They were my g-grandparents. They were financially well to do, and was one of the original families of Manchester. They did first came from England. They were here though in the 1600's.

Hi I was wondering if anyone has any connection to the Meckiff family.

My dad is Colin Meckiff born in London 1945, His dad is Roy Meckiff. I think he was born in 1910 and died in 1960's
His wife was Winnifred Nelson Meckiff. She was born in Sept 1910 and died Dec 1976, Maiden name Edwards.
I think Roy's dad's name was James
That as far back as I have and really would like to know more. If anyone has any information please let me know.

Her father did disown her although he and her mother Mabel Root were in the family way before they married. Little May's grandmother Mary Ann Kent however helped her through the pregnancy. Richard Roots & Mary Biggs - Kent area

Have been trying to find the marriage cert for the above with no success.

Richard married x2 but I can only find his 2nd marriage cert.

Richard & Mary are married on the 1851 UK Census. He's born 1811 HIgh Halden, Kent and she is 1816 Smarden, Kent. Mary died 1873.

Can anyone suggest how else I can try and find this certificate? Thanks for takingthe time to read this.

Does anybody have any information on the Roots from either Hadlow or Maidstone, Kent? I'm currently stuck on Mary Roots (1816-1888 at either Hadlow or Maidstone).

She married Thomas Davenport between 1832 and 1839. If anybody has seen a marriage entry for them, please let me know!

My branch of Roots family has been based in and around Aston, Birmingham since 1840s It is likely that for at least for 120 years we were the main or only Roots family in Birmingham. (Most Roots seem to in SE around London / Kent) However I can,t trace the exact origins of this branch other than it was Henry Roots (b.c1820) and Mary Ross who married in around 1844, she was from Redditch but he was from Oxfordshire ?

My great aunt Lucy was born in May 1880 in Cornell, Livingston Co., IL and married Edward Roots in LaSalle Co, IL 1898. They had 4 children that I know of. Lucy, I believe, passed away on Dec 27, 1916 in Cook Co., IL.

Is anyone able to get a copy of the obit from the paper for me? I would pay for copy, postage and reasonable gas for the trouble.

My grandad ALFRED ROOTS went to Canada in the 1930's met and married HELEN HAY IRONSIDE GRANT, moved back to Newington in kent near sittingbourne and stayed there.
Helen had already emigrated to Canada from Aberdeen in the 1920's along with a few of her brothers and sisters.

I would like to know if you have any further info on Eliza Lydia McCook's family line?

I am researching the McCook line that she is connected to and would like to find more on her. It is very hard to find info on the Ladies of the family lines, so if you have any other info that you could share, I would appreciate it very much.
