Re: Bertha Rorick Elmira NY Murdered 1934

I am not researching this Rorick family, but my notes show that Bertha was the daughter of Gilbert Rorick and Grace Bell Wheeler. Also, that she married Fay P. Scott. There is a monography on this Rorick family by Warren Marsh that is available on microfilm from your local Family History Center (LDS Church). To the best of my knowledge, it does not, however, mention the murder.

I just emailed him and the other Savannahs and he returned my email and told me about his Aunt Maddy who is Madeline Rorick. Joseph Kearns was Billie's mothers brother-Billie's Uncle. Billie is 79. They had a son, not named on the BC in Oct 1913. Can't find them after that. I found William & Cora with youngest son George Harold on the 1911 census in Red Deer Co, Alberta Canada. Can't find anything on them after that. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Louisa Rorick

There is a genealogy posted at www.familytreemaker.com that includes a Louisa Rorick who was born about 1832. It does not list a spouse for her. Much of this Rorick family lived in Ohio and Muskingum County, so this may be the branch of the Rorick family you're looking for.
Seeking additional information on Mrs. Elsa C. Rorick who is listed in the 1934 phone directory for Waterford/Groton/New London, CT. She is listed as the head of the household and working as a cost accountant. The reason I ask is that my great-grandfather's will, probated in 1932, identifies a grandson, Mark Duane Rorick, who lived in Groton, CT. I am wondering if this was his mother (his parents divorced). Any information would be much appreciated.
Dead Hermit was Her Brother -- William Rorick d. 1900

Dead Hermit Was Her Brother

Mrs. Elizabeth Ploof Discovers the Whereabouts of Long Lost Relative

Some weeks ago the body of William Rorick was discovered in a little shanty, in which he lived, near Ridgway, Elk county. Rorick was an eccentric man and none of his neighbors were very much acquainted with him. Upon his death the coroner held an inquest and among other things found was a time-worn letter signed Mrs. Elizabeth Ploof, Newbery, evidently a sister.

The G.A.R. veterans, who belonged to the same post as did Rorick, wrote to Mrs. Ploof, and their contained the first information on her brother that Mrs. Ploof had received in almost four years. He had for some unaccountable reason kept his whereabouts a secret from his relatives.

Mrs. Ploof requested that Rorick's personal effects be sent to her, which was accordingly done. Before the discovery of the dead hermit's relatives, his remains were buried in the G.A.R. lot, and it is likely that they will be allowed to remain where deposited by his soldier friends.

Source: Williamsport (PA) Daily Gazette and Bulletin, May 12, 1900.

William Rorick -- Wellsboro, PA 1887

Mr. William Rorick, of Ridgway, Elk county, an old hunter went out to shoot deer the other day, taking advantage of the late fall of snow by which to track them through the woods. On Sunday, somewhere in the Bear Creek region, he killed a deer and while in the act of cutting it up was shot by Philo Christler, who saw the head of the deer, but not Mr. Rorick, who was partly concealed by underbrush. It seems that Mr. Rorick was holding the head of the deer in his arms when the mistake was made by Mr. Christler, who, seeing the head, fired at a point where he supposed the body of the deer to be, not thinking that a human being was within a mile of the locality. The bullet went through the fleshy part of Mr. Rorick's thighs, causing a bad but not fatal wound.

The Wellsboro (PA) Agitator, November 29, 1887

Could her name have been spelled any of these ways? I'm a descendant of John O. Ruick, born in Va and migrated to Licking County, Ohio via Muskingum County circa 1827. I have been unable to find very many records concerning this family in Va or in Ohio. After about 1870 the name disappears from the area. And the court house in Licking County burned down in 1875! Just my luck-huh?! I did find a marriage record for a Thomas Ruick in Pa. His name is suppose to be spelled Ruick but on the record it has his last name as Rorick.

Mabel Rorick Romayne Rorick, the daughter of Peter and Ellen Berhardt Rorick was born in1907 in Scranton Pa. She married Frederick George Ransom September 7, 1927 in St John's Lutheran Church on Jefferson Ave in Scranton. The ceremony was performed the Rev John C Mattes. There attendants were Chester Ransom and Elsa Anderson. A wedding dinner followed at the home of the bride. The couple honeymooned in Atlantic City and Vineland NJ. They lived at 535 Alder St. Fred was the son of Frederick Ransom and Maria Morlang. Fred and Maria were married at Hickory St Presbyterian Church in Scranton by the Rev William Nordt.
My Great Great Grandparents were Johann Friedrich Fuess married to Maria Elisabethe Morlang.
